In the latter part of the

seventeenth century, a Christian poet and hymn writer penned these inspiring words. He is calling out to each and all of us to do something that is essential to spiritual growth and stamina.

O worship the King, all glorious above.

And gratefully sing His wonderful love; Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

Worship pleases our Lord.

When a believer meditates on the greatness and goodness of God, he is giving proper worth to Him. Another form of the act and experience of worship comes from an ancient word— “worth ship.” He is worthy of our adoration, love, and life.

We are all familiar with what we call “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Think for a moment about the phrase: “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” How many trillions of times has that request been repeated over the centuries? Do

you know what we are asking of our Lord? In Heaven every angel, every believer – including our loved ones who have preceded us to Glory – is praising, thanking, and exalting God. In short, they are giving perfect and passive worship to our Lord Jesus and to His Heavenly Father.

Yes, we want that down here – in my heart and in yours – privately and publically. Just like the four living creatures and the elders at His throne:

Blessing and honor and glory and dominion to the One seated on the throne and to the Lamb, forever and ever!

And the four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Revelation 5:13-14

Let us give much time and attention to the worship of our Lord.

Before time began as we know it, there was a fellowship we could never qualify to join.

You see, this “team” is 3 yet one. They are perfectly unified, they execute with exact precision and they always win. There is no need for our human abilities because they know ALL things.

Our voices are not needed; for when they speak, galaxies are created. Would we dare exercise our puny strengths when thunder, wind, and lightning are at their fingertips! Their fellowship is perfect. Who are these personalities? God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

So here’s the big question: What can we as humans bring to this divine gathering? NOTHING! Think about this. The God who doesn’t need anything desires “worshipers!” Amazingly, God seeks those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. He actually invites weak, limited and frail humans to come and worship Him. So what does God do while we worship? He already knows everything, so our worship does not surprise Him. He owns everything, so our gifts don’t enrich Him, but yet God delights in His people and He responds to their worship and obedience. He is our Father and it pleases Him when He is thought of, praised and worshiped!

LIVING IN WORSHIP God places a high premium on “relationships.” This is why a personal relationship through Jesus is necessary between God and man. God loves “FAMILY!” My mother is a full-time worshiper. You might say, “Sure she is because she is in heaven.”

Right. But my mom was a fulltime worshiper while living on earth! This is why her funeral service was actually a worship service of celebration, music, testimony and praise. Mom believed, like the early Jews, that all of life and every activity was to be approached as an act of worship. Mom showed God’s worth (worship) by her relationship to my dad, her duties as a mother, a friend to others and her service as a master musician. Let me explain.

Mom did not go to worship, she lived in worship. Very rarely did my two brothers and myself awaken in the morning without Christian music being played downstairs. We knew Mom was reading her devotion, praying and worshiping before breakfast. There was already an “atmosphere” of worship in the house. No television or video games intruded on 6

this meaningful beginning to the day. Mom provided scripture cards that we read at the breakfast table and as we were eating, she would read from her Bible.

And then it would happen...

Mom would start praying over her boys.

Oh my goodness. The prayers were so sincere, so intense and powerful.

Yes, she would pray for safety and guidance but she also prayed for godliness, character, and strong convictions. Then she would start praying SPECIFICS! “Lord, give Rick self control. He lost his temper yesterday. Oh God, let Randy be careful with those friends at school who do not truly love You. And Father, show Rodney that the girl he is dating cannot help him spiritually.” SILENCE permeated the room. Mom would leave the room and in whispers we would look at each other and say, “How did she know that?”

Mom was teaching us that

worship is a family privilege, it is intimate, worship is personal, worship is daily, worship is relational, worship is honest and worship means you are CONNECTED! You really don’t worship until you’re connected to God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. How do we stay connected?

Obedience! A person cannot worship and live in disobedience to God. Believe me...

Mom was connected.

Isn’t that a huge part of worship? And it’s hard to “live” in worship when you only attempt to “connect” one day a week. This is why we are encouraged to bring our worship to the gathering of God’s people on Sunday!

In closing, Mom taught us what kind of “heart” a worshiper possesses:

Mom, I sure miss you and I miss worshiping with you. But in the meantime, you continue to worship face to face with Jesus in glory, and I will continue to worship in the Spirit with my brothers and sisters at Whitesburg Baptist until we join you and others around the throne! Thanks for teaching me, by example, to appreciate and love worship. I hope my worship of the Lord is a lot like the definition the six-year-old boy gave his Sunday School teacher, “Worship is when you give God goosebumps!”

Rick Stone recently celebrated 40 years of marriage to Rosemary, is a father to 3 grown children and a grandfather of 4. Rick desires to live in worship and firmly believes that praise is not noise, and reverence is not silence. An individual who influenced his understanding of praise and reverence was his dear mother, Angie.

For as long as I can remember, worship has been an important part of my life.

At church, my dad led the singing while mom played the organ. We were taught to worship with lips, our minds and our hearts.

We were also taught from an early age how to sit quietly in church so as not to disturb the other worshippers. Because of my parents’ responsibilities, my sister was given to job of keeping me in line during church. (I’m sure she could tell you a tale or two about how much I DIDN’T behave, but that’s another story altogether.) Because of this heritage, it has always been important to my husband and me that we teach our girls how to behave during worship services.

My sweet husband, David, took on the job of sitting with our three girls in church so that I could sing in the choir every Sunday. Tending to three little girls in church presented quite a few challenges, many of which I observed from the back row of the choir.

I remember one Sunday morning David had all three girls sitting on the very front pew in front of our pastor, Bro. Jimmy. He believed that they would pay attention better if they were sitting on the front. Here’s how I saw it: 5 year old Lacey is cold. She tugs on Dad’s sleeve. Dad removes his jacket and wraps it around Lacey’s shoulders. Lacey

FROM THE BACK ROW OF THE CHOIR pulls her knees up and wraps Dad’s coat all the way around her. All we can see is her little head sticking out. Lacey looks down: Aha! Dad’s sunglasses are in his coat pocket. She takes the sunglasses out of Dad’s pocket and puts them on. What the choir can now see is Lacey’s little sunglass-covered face sticking out of the top of her dad’s jacket.

I don’t know how Bro. Jimmy kept a straight face.

On another Sunday morning the choir filed into the loft, and as was my habit, I looked for my family. I see David, but no Dana (her sisters were too young to be in big church yet). David looks at me and mouths “Where’s Dana?”

Now how am I supposed to know where Dana is when I am in the choir? David left the service to go and find his wayward daughter who had not found her way into the sanctuary.

Allison, being the youngest, always wanted to be as big as everyone else so during the

music portion of the worship service, David would stand her up on the back of the pew in front of them. She would hold on to her dad and sing her heart out. I remember one particular Sunday morning, there was an adult (you know who you are) who kept making faces at Allison and making her laugh.

She got in trouble for cutting up in church, but the man who was antagonizing her is the one who should have gone to bed without any lunch. Yet he still remains a dear family friend and we enjoy worshiping together, as well as the memories from past days.

My girls are grown now and we don’t all get to worship together every Sunday. I hope they will pass on the lessons we tried to pass on to them. I hope they will always find great joy in worship as I do. And I still love most the Sundays that, from the the back row of the choir, I can see my David and our three girls sitting and worshiping together.

Tragic death. Family funeral. Heaving sobs.

In this setting enters my little niece Serina.

Autistic, oblivious, charmed.

Walking from the neighbor’s house where we were staying to the family home, Serina ran in front with her head lowered, her arms outstretched behind her, “I’m Sonic!” she screamed gleefully and then kicked up the dust. Stopping abruptly, she pulled out an iPod and played the theme song from Ghostbusters. Serina had a thing about that song – we’d listened to it about 45 times already that morning. It was a jarring, boisterous interruption to coats and ties, piano hymns, and floral arrangements. With blonde hair whipping in the wind, brown eyes dancing with the delight of life, Serina hit the pause button just in time to spin on her heels

and shout at me, “Who you gonna call, Aunt Ann?” Laughing, she waited for me to answer. It was as if all heaven waited for me to answer. The white birch, the heavy-laden apple, the yellowtinged elm all murmured… Who you gonna call?

Loss. Fear. Emptiness.

Who you gonna call, Aunt Ann? As my soul whispered, “I trust You.” The leaves rustled in the breeze. I answered back, ‘Who YOU gonna call, Serina?” In the space of a second she began singing, “Our God is an AWESOME God, He reigns from heaven above…” and she scampered off directing an imaginary choir as she ran.

I followed. Laughter through tears;

running, worshipping, amazed.

Andrea Thoenes is devoted to her husband, Michael, and her kids. She likes to be with family and friends and do things that will impact eternity. Her life motto is, “Lord, I am willing to Receive what You Give, Lack what You Withhold, and Relinquish what You Take…”

The Bible tells us that God originally planned a world that worked perfectly – where everything and everyone fit together in harmony. God made each of us with a purpose – to worship Him and walk with Him. (See Genesis 1:31 and Psalm 19:1.)

Life doesn’t work when we ignore God and His original design for our lives. We selfishly insist on doing things our own way. The Bible calls this sin. Sin leads to a place of brokenness.

The consequence of our sin is separation from God – in this life and for all of eternity. (See Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23.)

At this point we need a remedysome good news. Because of His love, God did not leave us in our brokenness. Jesus, God in human flesh, came to us and lived perfectly according to God’s Design. Jesus came to rescue us – to do for us what we could not do for ourselves. He took our sin and shame to the cross, paying the penalty of our sin by His death. Jesus was then raised from the dead – to provide the only way for us to be rescued and restored to a relationship with God. (See John 3:16, Colossians 2:14, and 1 Corinthians 14:3-4.)

We don’t have the power to

escape this brokenness on our own. We need to be rescued. We must ask God to forgive us – and we must turn from sin to trust in Jesus. This is what it means to repent and believe. Believing, we receive new life through Jesus. God turns our lives in a new direction. (See Mark 1:15, Ephesians 2:8-9, and Romans 10:9.)

When God restores our relationship to Him, we begin to discover meaning and purpose in a broken world. Now we can pursue God’s Design in all areas of our lives. God’s spirit empowers us to recover His Design and assures us of His presence in this life and for all of eternity. (See Philippians 2:13 and Ephesians 2:10.)

Now that you have heard this Good News, God wants you to respond to Him. You can talk to Him using words like these: My life is broken – I recognize it’s because of my sin. I believe Christ came to live, die and was raised from the dead – to rescue me from my sin. Forgive me. I turn from my selfish ways and put my trust in You. I know that Jesus is Lord of all, and I will follow Him.

10,000 Reasons

Ten thousand is a pretty

big number, and I think we all can agree that ten thousand of anything is a lot of things.

One of my favorite worship songs is Matt Redman’s 10,000 Reasons. This song comes from Psalm 103 and focuses on the many reasons we have to worship our God. Bless the Lord oh my soul Oh my soul Worship His Holy name Sing like never before Oh my soul I’ll worship Your Holy name

The sun comes up It’s a new day dawning It’s time to sing Your song again Whatever may pass

10,000 REASONS Psalm 103 is a psalm of pure worship. Unlike most of David’s psalms, there are no petitions for help or cries for deliverance.

David reflects on God’s compassion and the good things He does for those who trust Him. David fuses God’s actions and character to portray God’s love and loyalty, which he responds to in worship and trust.

The major theme of the psalm is that God’s great goodness and our great need should cause us to respond in heartfelt worship.

God’s goodness is great David focuses on the abundant goodness of God: “forget none of His benefits” (v. 2). David invites us to join him in recalling God’s many tender mercies. It’s human nature to forget God’s benefits.

Focusing on God’s blessings must be a deliberate choice.

Our need is great Psalm 103’s primary subject is on God, not man. But there is the minor theme that we are desperately needy: sinful, sick, and short-lived. If we don’t acknowledge our true condition, 24

we won’t cry out to God for mercy, and we won’t receive His many blessings.

Our response should be heartfelt worship David ends the psalm like a conductor ends a great symphony, calling in all of the instruments for a great climax of praise. After affirming the absolute sovereignty of God (v.

19), he calls in the angels to bless the Lord (v. 20). Next, he calls in all the hosts (probably referring to the angels as God’s army) to praise God. Note that they all do God’s bidding and obey Him. Then he extends the call to all of God’s works (v. 22). But then, lest the individual get lost in the grandeur of it all, he crisply closes by bringing it back down to where he started, to that little speck on planet earth: “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”

How does what David said reflect on your own life? How does this apply to what we do every day, or need to do? I think one of the main things that I gain from both this Psalm and this song is the fact that we have over

10,000 reasons to praise God. He has given us so much more than just simple things, and so much more than those “big blessings.”

Worship is an intelligent response to God: a response of praise, reverence, and obedience which stems from an understanding of who God is and who we are. God’s great goodness and our great need should cause us to respond to Him in heartfelt worship.

It was the winter of my

junior year in college. I had the privilege of attending the Passion Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. I hurried into the dimly lit Georgia Dome and waited in anticipation for the countdown clock to reach zero. When the countdown ended and the lights burst to life, I worshiped my Father and King with 60,000 college students from 54 different nations, and more than 2,000 colleges and universities. That weekend, I was a witness to redeeming salvation and the restoration of souls. Hearts broke and yet were mended with the gracious love of the Savior. Jesus Christ was glorified. Although this was an experience ingrained with worship, it was not the most awesome, spirit-led worship I have ever experienced.

I was on a road trip recently

and I had to drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. One of my favorite bands that consists of dear friends, Judah & The Lion, was playing quietly through the speakers in my car. On one of the windy back roads I took during this trip, the song “Hundred Miles� began to play. The mountains towered around me and seemed to grow in height and breadth as I travelled farther north. I began to top a hill as the road curved abruptly. When I reached the top, the skies seemed to open up and the sun streamed through the clouds in vibrant beams and poured out on the endless range of mountaintops that were sprawled out before me. I encountered a true sense of awe that compelled me to nothing less than worship of my perfect Creator God. All of my senses April/May 2016 | Whitesburg

became astutely aware of what was happening around me and I heard the song “Hundred Miles” softly proclaiming, “Hallelujah!

Sing to the Lord. Hallelujah! My soul rejoice.” This moment of worship was not inspired by superb lighting, or just the right chords on a guitar paired with just the right worship songs, or a provoking speaker on a stage. This moment was one of pure, Holy Spirit ordained awe that gave me a brief view of the glorious majesty and expanse of the gracious God of the universe.

Christian author Paul David Tripp, in his book Awe, states, “there is a direct connection between awe and worship.” As humans, we seek and pursue awe and experiences that are awesome. Some find awe in arenas filled with people fervently cheering on their

favorite football team. Some find awe while walking solitarily through forests of lanky pine trees. Some find it in a sea of people during a roaring concert.

Yet still, others find awe in lofty cathedrals and churches.

Wherever we go to seek awe and what we are in awe of when we get there is ultimately what or whom we worship. So whatever circumstance, position, or venue you are in, if Christ has called you into His kingdom and claimed you as His child, we, as His children are called to one thing in life and that is to glorify and worship Him by being in awe of Him. “For Yahweh, the Most High, is awe-inspiring, a great King over all the earth.”
