Blue; a colour that has a rich history with the House of Dior and dates back to when Monsieur

Dior once said, “Among all the colors, navy blue

is the only one which can ever compete with black, it has all the same qualities.” Therefore the introduction of Denim to Dior by John Galliano, a fabric traditionally produced in an Indigo colour, seamlessly transitioned into the House in the 1990s and hasn’t left the collections since. Although originally worn as workwear, Denim has been transformed into a luxurious commodity through styling and collaborating with high end fashion techniques.

French designer Christian Dior dominated the

fashion world post WW2, releasing the revolutionary ‘New Look’ in 1947. Containing the Bar Jacket and an A -line skirt, this sparked a dramatic change from the austerity of military inspired clothing to structures; bringing back a sense of frivolity to France and regaining Paris as the fashion capital.

Monsieur Dior was known to have many superstitions which he would tie into each collection. These have become hallmarks of the brand that reflect his legacy and included a coat named after his place of birth, Granville; lilies of the valley sewn onto his garments to bring good luck; and he never began a couture show without consulting his tarot card reader.

Over the years different Creative Directors for the House of Dior have also contributed to the Dior hallmark history such as Marc Bohan’s Monogram pattern and John Galliano’s ‘Saddle bag’ that are still found in collections today. Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of LVMH once said “Galliano has a creative talent very close to that of Christian Dior. He has the same extraordinary mixture of romanticism, feminism and modernity that symbolised Monsieur Dior.” (Arnault 1997 cited in Sowray 2012).

The classic Caro jacket pays homage through its name to Monsieur Dior’s beloved sister Catherine - affectionately known as “Caro”. Made with virtuoso craftsmanship combining the beauty of the gesture with exceptional materials the Caro Jacket is offered this season in a traditional blue washed denim with a modern appeal. Crafted in blue cotton, it boasts an oversized fit while a diamond texture adorns a single sleeve and front shoulder on the opposing side. The Caro Jacket can be coordinated with the matching Mid-Length skirt to complete a contemporary denim look with vintange accents.

Priyanka Chopra Born in India, Dior’s newest brand ambassador Priyanka Chopra is known predominantly as an actor, model

and film producer and winner of Miss World in 2000.

With firm feminist beliefs, she is an activist who works closely

with UNICEF for women’s rights and causes that improve the lives of underprivileged children around the world.

Chopra adds to Dior’s history of exploring different cultural banckgrounds. As well as having a curvaceous, healthy body type she resembles a strong, indepedent

and healthy role model to a young adult target market.

Her similarity in feminist beliefs to Maria Grazia Chiuri’s allows Chopra to connect with the brands current vision on an emotional level and advocate Dior from a genuine perspective. She gels seamlessly with the “active woman”

vision of Dior, therefore styling her in flat shoes, jeans under

a skirt, minimal makeup and a low slick bun for this shoot

was a concious choice aligning with the idea of practicality.

The addition of a red lip to the look bought her own personal

touch to Dior in alignment with her traditional Indian heritage.

MARIA GRAZIA CHUIRI In 2016 Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiuri was appointed as the first female Creative Director for the House of Dior at age 53.

Channelling her feminist views as creative inspiration throughout her deisgns, the start of the feminist movement in the 1970s was a influential period for Maria Grazia Churi, describing it to be “a

period where women were using fashion to define themselves”.

opportunity to make make feminist statements.

‘Practicality is the new black’ for the modern woman; with the current global movement of Feminism continuing to increase it has also seen

a rise in the amount of women in the workforce and sport. MGC has acknowledged this trend through many avenues within the House of Dior,

one of which being the consistent implementation of the pant suit throughout her collections which

has

a

long

standing

feminist

history

dating back to the 1930s and Marlene Dietrich.
