MAYOR’S MESSAGE After two years of changing public health restrictions, this season will feel like a return to the usual Whitecourt summer with a long list of events and activities planned. Party In The Park will return to Rotary Park June 17 and 18; Children’s Festival is back May 28 and 29; in-person Canada Day activities and the pancake breakfast will be hosted July 1; the Chamber will host the Carnival downtown May 6-8; and, the June 4 Run 4 Fun will be held at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre. The return of festivals and events is not just important to the vibrancy of Whitecourt, but it is also great news for our hospitality and service industry.

There’s more than just events available to enjoy - the walking trails, bike paths, playgrounds, Mountain Bike Park, Skate Park and Rotary Park will continue to be popular as families and tourists take advantage of the warmer temperatures.

• A refund, less a $10.00 administration fee, will be issued if a participant withdraws prior to the registration deadline.

For your convenience Course ID#’s have been listed for programs offered to ensure smooth and efficient registration.

• A prorated refund, less a $10.00 administration fee, will be issued for medical reasons (with a doctor’s note).

• Registration online and over the phone can be paid by way of VISA/MASTERCARD/AMEX.

• The registration fee is non-refundable if withdrawn after the registration deadline.

• Registrations are NOT accepted without payment.

• The third and successive child(ren) in a family pays half the registration fee when registering in the SAME program or as indicated in the program information.

• The registration deadline for all programs is seven days prior to the start date, unless otherwise advertised.

• If a program is cancelled by the Town, registrants will receive a full refund.

This facility has planned maintenance periods throughout the year. The shutdown period varies by amenity depending on the work to be done. Reduced schedules and activities may occur in some areas; other areas may be closed completely. This shut down period is built into the price of the membership fee and no refunds or extensions will be given. Please watch for facility signage. Must be 16 years of age to use the Pembina Fitness Centre or 13 years of age with Weight Training for Teens certification.

The Babysitting Course, refreshed and revised, now has a greater emphasis on First Aid skills. The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Course covers everything from managing difficult behaviours to essential content on leadership and professional conduct as a babysitter.

Babysitting promises to deepen and enhance the responsibility that older youth feel when caring for younger children. This updated curriculum, complete with new science, also provides improved learning when it comes to giving the appropriate care in the event of an emergency.

Athabasca River Canoe Adventure Join Paddle Canada instructors for an incredible scenic canoe ride on the Athabasca River. We launch on the river near the Whitecourt Golf Course and finish at the Blue Ridge Rec Area boat launch. All equipment and transportation back to the drop in location will be provided. 2022 Seniors' Week June 6-12

Seniors’ Week is a time we show appreciation for the contributions seniors have made in our community, whether it’s their time, talent or life experience, their contributions enhance quality of life for all Whitecourt residents.

eniors’ Week this year will also include the introduction of Memory Care Kits, a new Library resource for seniors created in partnership with Whitecourt Public Library. The Memory Care Kits are a carry bags filled with items and activities centred around a place, time, or theme. Each themed kit will have a mix of games, puzzles, books, art projects, music and other activities. Memory kits provide a fun way for any adult to explore the kit’s theme; however, they are designed with seniors in mind. AQUA FITNESS EARLY BIRD H2O (ends July 27) A class for those who want to start their day off right with a full-body workout! This is a fun aqua class that focuses on improving muscular strength & endurance by using a variety of equipment.

We’re usually in the shallow end or the lazy river (but we’re not lazy!). No swimming skills required.

Max.20 Level: All Levels Days: Mondays, Wednesdays Time: 6:15-7:00am GENTLE WATER FITNESS (ends June 23) This aquatic exercise class is designed to meet the needs of people who have health conditions resulting in pain and dysfunction when participating in land based fitness activities. Do you want to train like an athlete-with commitment, enthusiasm, and ability to focus?

The Youth Starter Pack is for youth aged 1317 and is all about ensuring your body is in peak condition so you can perform to your full potential. Do you want to be more efficient, mobile, stronger, and able to produce more power? Youth will receive a personalized 4-week exercise program and personalized nutrition plan, following a 2-hour session that includes goal-setting, an assessment, program design, and equipment orientation with a personal trainer.

ENERGY TRANSFER CANADA AQUATIC CENTRE INFORMATION *Supervision Requirements

Children 7 years and younger must be within arms reach of a responsible supervisor who is 14 years or older. The maximum ratio of caregiver to children 7 years and younger is 1:4. This supervision policy is in place to ensure that children are safe while enjoying the Energy Transfer Canada Aquatic Centre.

Swim Diaper Requirements

All children 36 months and under, and anyone who is incontinent, must wear protective, water-resistant swimwear in order to minimize contamination. Swim diapers are specially designed to not soak up water, and will not expand in the water. Guest Services has swim diapers available for purchase.

Shoes and Strollers

Outdoor footwear and strollers are not permitted on deck or in the change rooms. If you wish to lock up your footwear, please carry them to the locker.

Health regulations stipulate that outdoor footwear must not be worn in wet traffic areas. Shoes may be left on the racks outside the pool change rooms.

Health Requirements for Showers

As per health requirements, each person must take a cleansing shower prior to entering the pool. This means washing all hair products out, as well as removing all lotions and make-up from skin.

Pool Fouling

Wait lists are taken for all aquatic programs. If there is sufficient demand for a program, courses can be added if space and instructors are available.

Pool closure may be necessary in the event of pool fouling. Please make sure your children use the washroom before entering the water. Feeding after their swim or a few hours before is often helpful.

Any person with diarrhea, or a history of diarrhea over the previous two weeks, must not use the pool facility, as per health requirements. Pools may be closed anywhere between 1-36 hours for necessary disinfecting following fouling.

Programs with low registration may be cancelled or combined. Register early to avoid disappointment.

Cancellations can happen one week before the lessons begin. For cancellation policies please refer to page 11.

Screenings

Unsure of what level to register your child in?

We offer swim evaluations for $13.00. Only 5-15 minutes are required for an instructor to determine what level your child should enroll in. Screenings take place on Tuesdays from 6:00-7:00pm. Register at Guest Services.

Time in the hot tub is limited to 20 minutes. Body temperature of children under 2 years old rises very quickly, and should be closely monitored to avoid negative cardiovascular effects. Pregnant women, and persons with heart disease, hypertension, seizures, diabetes, obesity, or those greater than 65 years of age, should consult with a physician before using the hot tub.

Locks and Lockers

Please do not leave valuables in the change rooms.

The Energy Transfer Canada Aquatic Centre offers one time use, loonie operated lockers in each of the change rooms. You may also bring your own lock for your belongings. The Town of Whitecourt is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Please remember to remove your lock at the end of your swim. Locks left overnight will be cut off.

Starfish - Designed for ages 4-12 months. This level is an orientation to water for babies and their parent/caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their heads up. The goals are to help babies experience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water and to teach the parent/caregiver age specific water safety.

Duck - Designed for ages 12-24 months. This level is an orientation to water for toddlers and their parent/caregiver. Age is the only condition for entering this level. Swimmers learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements through games, songs, and active water play. The parent/caregiver also learns age-specific water safety. This level is participation-based only, without formal evaluation.

Sea Otter is a transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of the instructor. All skills are assisted by the instructor. Swimmers enter this level when they are 3 years of age.

Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides, and swim 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills.

CROCODILE/WHALE Crocodile - Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sunfish.

Through games and other fun activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres on their front and back, perform dolphin kick, and begin using rhythmic breathing. They also progress with kicking drills, increasing their swimming distance to 10 metres. Safety skills include jumping into deep-water and performing surface support for 10 seconds, recognizing when a swimmer needs help, and using a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) in deep water.

Swimmers are evaluated on performance criteria. Crocodile is equivalent to Red Cross Swim Kids Level 2.

Whale - Through fun activities, swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10 metres.

Swimmers work on developing their flutter kick and perform a distance swim of 15 metres.

Level 8 - An introduction to breast stroke (15m) and foot first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of the open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults and standing shallow dives. Who is eligible for safe visitation services?

Families may be eligible for safe visitation services if…

• There have been incidents of violence between parents & the parents are separated.

• Both parties consent to the terms of visitation and the program.

• A child wishes to visit the non-custodial parent, or a court has ordered that the child has supervised visitation. candace.taylor@mcman.ca Program Supervisor www.mcman.ca

The Safe Visitation Initiative helps protect children and families in situations where there is a risk of family violence and/or the children have been exposed to family violence. Safe visitation provides an opportunity for children to remain connected their non-custodial parent in a safe and secure environment. Staffs helps ensure children have a positive experience visiting with their parent and are trained to recognize cues that the child may be uncomfortable. Services also can include support in creating safety, helping your child through the experience of separation, parenting challenges, understanding the impact environment can have on a child’s development and planning for safe long- term connection. Healthy Relationship groups, health communication and help for you and your child in navigating through the period of separation and divorce are also available though the program. There is no cost for families to access services from a safe visitation site, and a court order is not necessary for a referral. The services are not intended as parenting evaluation. In families where family violence has occurred and the parents are separated, organizing visitation can be stressful and may pose additional risks or challenges; the Safe Visitation can bridge this stressful time and build towards a safe future.
