WELCOME BACK TO WHITE BIRD UNCAGED

We are thrilled to welcome Shay Kuebler’s Radical System Art back to Portland this week for the U.S. premiere of Momentum of Isolation. After their unforgettable White Bird/U.S. debut in 2019, Shay had begun creation on tonight’s work, Momentum of Isolation, inspired by the then-recent appointment of Tracey Crouch as the United Kingdom’s first Minister of Loneliness and that country’s accompanying Strategy for Tackling Loneliness. After nearly 4 years and several months of isolation in lockdown, this prescient work has only grown more relevant.

Tonight, we have the pleasure of enjoying Momentum of Isolation in-person, sitting near oneanother. As we experience the stunning visuals and genre-defying movement of this unique company, we are reminded, in the face of the cavernous solitude this modern digital age sometimes inflicts, what power live performance has to draw us back together. Thank you for being here.

Tickets are now on sale for the remainder of our 25th Anniversary Season - our 2nd annual WE ARE ONE Festival comprised of Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, and Ballet Hispánico, as well as Paul Taylor Dance Company and MOMIX closing our White Bird Dance Series. And, as we move into the gift-giving season, keep our Holiday Pack in mind: give tickets to all three shows in our WE ARE ONE Festival, or see it yourself, for just $70 total - an unbeatable deal! We look forward to seeing you again in January when The TL Collective makes their White Bird debut. Led by Michaela Taylor, a rising choreographic talent already receiving commissions across the country, this young company of incredibly athletic dancers will close the Uncaged Series with a bang. Until then, we hope you have Happy Holidays and a fantastic New Year!

“MOI” was supported through The Creation Fund of The Candance Network. We are grateful to Candance and the supporting presentation organizations: The Brian Webb Dance Company (Edmonton, AB), The National Arts Centre of Canada (Ottawa, ONT), Live Art Dance Productions (Halifax, NS), Danse Danse (Montréal, QC) and The Yukon Arts Centre (Whitehorse, YK). Their support directly enabled a greater life for this work.

RSA would also like to thank Danse Danse, La Rotonde (Québec City), Brian Webb Dance Co. and The Push Peforming Arts Festival (Vancouver, BC) for their co-production support of this project through 2020/21. We are grateful for your confidence and support through such a challenging time for the performing arts. We would especially like to recognize the immense co-production and presentation support given to “MOI” by The International Chutzpah! Festival and Artistic Director Jessica Gutteridge. The world premiere of “MOI” was supported by an artist-in-residency program, and the life of this work will always be connected to the festival and their support.

TONIGHT’S PROGRAM

MOMENTUM OF ISOLATION (U.S. PREMIERE)

MOI- MOMENTUM OF ISOLATION bases its performances around social isolation and loneliness. The performance explores the objective and subjective experiences through the individual, the group and modern society- a society with shifting values and an ever-advancing digital way of life.

To shape a digital world on stage, MOI places live interactive video and sound around the performers. These elements enhance ideas on how technology influences our lives, and that it can both empower and disempower us.

Further distilling isolation, solo performances and the extended social isolation of one character on stage are critical to the arc of the performance. Within MOI, one character’s interactions are only with inanimate objects. Through puppeteering and stage craft, the inanimate world comes to life, which highlights how social isolation can disrupt our connection to reality. Our social bonds allow us to understand that we have an impact on what is around us- that we exist. Research began on MOI in 2018 after Artistic Director Shay Kubler read about the “Minister of Loneliness” in the U.K. In studies, social isolation was found to be more detrimental to health over alcohol and cigarettes. In 2018, MOI felt like a critical work to explore. Now, in 2021, it has become even more relevant and accessible.

A Note From Artistic Director Shay Kuebler:

I need to first start off by giving my love and appreciation to the many artists who created and supported this project, both this performance and the many iterations before it. I’m grateful for your generosity, artistry and talent. You are the DNA and lifeblood of this project. Thank you!

Thank you to Brent Belsher and The BAM family for their continued support of the company and the artists. Without your support, we would not be where we are today.

To The Chutzpah! Festival, The JCC Staff and, especially, The NRT staff and Victoria Bell, you have been invaluable to the creation of this project and the life that it will have. Your openness and overwhelming generosity came at a time of such uncertainty. We are indebted to you for your support, and for the invaluable time and space.

To the donors and private supporters of RSA, you will likely never fully understand how much your support has meant. Through a precarious and challenging time for the arts, you reassured us that people wanted to see art and genuinely cared for the artists making this art.

I need to thank my family and my wife for their continued support. They give me, and the company, endless confidence and the faith to keep creating. I would not be the artist I am today without you.

Lastly, MOI - Momentum of Isolation would not be possible without the generous support of The Canada Council for The Arts, The BC Arts Council and The BC Gaming Community Grant program. Thank you for your continued support of the artists and the arts in Canada.

ABOUT RADICAL SYSTEM ART: Radical System Art (RSA) was founded in Vancouver, Canada, in 2014. RSA is an interdisciplinary performing arts organization that looks to create both accessible and innovative performance works through the integration of movement arts, visual arts, music and new technologies. Founder and Artistic Director Shay Kuebler created the name Radical System Art around a concept of harnessing opposition and dynamic range to find balance. “Radical” represents instinctive and raw qualities, whereas “System” represents trained and technical qualities. Together, the “Art” represents a balance where an idea or a quality is balanced by its opposite: instinct is honed with technique, chaos is shaped with control. The concepts of finding strength through opposition and polarity are a consistent theory in collaboration and creation where RSA has partnered with a diverse range of musicians, visual artists, sound artists and performing artists. Since its foundation in 2014, RSA has produced, performed and toured 6 full-length works: Karoshi (2014), Glory (2015-2017), Telemetry (2017-2020), FeastingonFamine (2017), Epilogos (2019-2020) and MomentumofIsolation (2021-22).

ABOUT WHITE BIRD Our

in Performance Diversity in Movement Accessibility and Inclusiveness Generosity of Spirit Dedication to Community Fiscal Responsibility

Our Equity Commitment

White Bird believes in the transformative power of movement and its capability to uplift, inspire, and unite. Historically, institutionalized performing arts were built within a system of ingrained racism, sexism, ableism, ageism, and transphobia, with the result being a field that does not prioritize the voices of marginalized groups. Our commitment is to break down these structures and to foster a community that not only represents a diverse range of individuals, but gives equal access and value to their voices.

The entire staff and board at White Bird understand that systemic social norms are inherently biased. We acknowledge the unique nuances between equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and recognize the added complexities of addressing these concepts in a historically oppressive region such as Oregon. Our vision is an ecosystem where the power of the arts is able to impact and inspire all communities, while simultaneously uniting each individual in a shared human experience.

In his own works PKD Workshow (2013) and Are we not drawn onward to new era (2018), Daniel employs a low-fi DYI aesthetic, exposing the guts of the performance machinery in parallel to the convoluting the ideas spectating. In 2020 he completed his first feature length film collaboration centred around pre-extradition bill Hong Kong. His work focuses on states of presence, unbalancing audienceship and novel constructions of light through design and new media. Daniel’s artistic research has explored the ephemeral nature of a ‘self’, interruptions of technology on human processes, and the results cognitive dissonance. Daniel’s work has been seen in Canada and internationally. He is a founding member of A Wake Of Vultures. Daniel is engaged with Vancouver’s thriving contemporary performance scene and often engages in crossover with indie film and the digital arts.
