Mahtomedi inducts four men into sports Hall of Fame BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR
The Mahtomedi Sports Hall of Fame has added a prominent coach, two allaround athletes and a longtime team doctor to its rolls. Steve Ross, Ryan Driscoll, Wally Malmstrom, and Dr. David Thorson were introduced at halftime of the football season opener last Friday evening. Ross, 1961 graduate, was a halfback/ safety, pitcher/shortstop, and basketball guard during a great era for MHS. He is the fourth inductee from a group that collected seven conference titles, won 22 straight football games and outscored opponents 407-0 in 1959, and went 26-1 in basketball with a fifthplace state finish in 1961. He fired three straight shutouts his senior season in baseball. The retired vice-president for Minnesota-Iowa AAA lives in Eagan and Englewood, Florida. Driscoll, class of 2000, was an all-state
wide receiver in football, a three-year starter at point guard in basketball, and a versatile track-and-field athlete who still holds the school triple jump record. The son of two Mahtomedi coaches, he is a physical education teacher and sophomore boys basketball coach at Northfield. Malmstrom coached Zephyr track teams to a 115-29 record and the state championship in 2006, and headed a vibrant program with two state trueteam championships and one MSHSL state title. This is the third Hall of Fame honor for the former Mankato State wide receiver; he was previously honored by the state coaches association and by his alma mater, Elk River High School. Dr. Thorson, who practices at Entira Clinic in White Bear Lake, was recognized for his service on the sidelines for the football and soccer teams for the past 25 years.
