Beginning their march around the lake Some of the hundreds of participants in the Carry The Fallen Ruck March event begin their 12 mile journey around White Bear Lake Saturday morning, Sept. 9. Hikers from around the state carried weighted packs to help raise awareness and honor military service members who have died from suicide. According to a press release, the primary purpose of the event is to bring military families together to build camaraderie in order to save future lives. Find more information at activeheroes.org.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Of 163 drivers stopped by the White Bear Lake Police Department during its summer crosswalk enforcement campaign, 131 were cited for failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The campaign, held at 12 crosswalks on four different days in July and August, was a joint effort with the St. Paul Police Department, which has conducted similar “Stop For Me” campaigns in St. Paul. “This initiative was designed to educate the public on Minnesota crosswalk laws and ultimately help prevent a pedestrian-involved motor vehicle crash in a crosswalk,” said White Bear Lake Police Office Jon Sanders, who was instrumental in bringing the enforcement to White Bear Lake after learning about it in St. Paul. Common responses from the 163 stopped drivers were that they “never saw” the pedestrians in the crosswalk or didn't know it was “the law” to stop. Other notable statements made by cited drivers included: SEE CROSSWALK, PAGE 8A

A cancer survivor herself, Jane Jones is a Relay regular. The White Bear Lake grandmother starts her Relay For Life fundraising efforts months in advance, sending about 60 letters to family and friends soliciting donations for the American Cancer Society. This year, Jones again topped the list for individual fundraising, netting $10,000 for cancer research. It's what she does. In fact, Jones has been participating in Relay at least 20 years, ever since winning the fight against uterine cancer. “I had been spastically working before on fund

drives for cancer, but that experience sure brought to mind what can happen and what needs to be done,” she said. Jones is a member of the Country Helps Cure team, sponsored by Country Financial, which has participated in White Bear's Relay for eight years. Her son Dan Jones is a friend of agency manager Jeff Picco, which is how the two were connected. According to Picco, Jones' fundraising skills helped the team raise $14,350 this year, most of which Jane raised herself. “The amazing thing is she does it all via mail,” he added. “We all wait for her to show up at 'bank night' the Thursday before the event to see her turn in her donations. It's just a great example of her dedication to
