Getting their kicks at Marketfest
Police begin summer crosswalk enforcement BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR
PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS
Dance students from Inspiration Performing Arts Center in Mahtomedi perform for a Marketfest crowd gathered at Railroad Park Thursday, July 20. The final installment of the weekly summertime gathering in downtown White Bear Lake is Thursday, July 27. The featured entertainment is the Devon Worley Band on the Kowalski’s Gazebo Stage (with Just for Kix performing at intermission) and American Bootleg on the White Bear Mitsubishi Stage (with the White Bear Elementary Orchestra performing at intermission).
WHITE BEAR LAKE — Police officers and citizen volunteers took to the streets July 10 for the department's fi rst-ever crosswalk enforcement initiative. “We are just going to stop the blatant violators,” White Bear Lake Police Office Jon Sanders told the group of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) volunteers at the intersection of Fourth Street and Wood Avenue, the fi rst of three locations where the group took to the crosswalks. “Those are the ones we want to educate.” Sanders, dressed as a civilian, proceeded to lead volunteers across the crosswalk. If a car passed the orange cones about 200 feet away as Sanders took at least one step into the road and didn't stop at the crosswalk, he radioed a police chase car down the road on either side that would pull

A-boat racing: Maiden voyage akin to baptism under fire BY DEBRA NEUTKENS EDITOR
When Gene Altstatt got wind a fleet of A boats were for sale on White Bear Lake, he knew he wanted to own a piece of their history. True, he’s a beginner when it comes to sailboat racing, but Altstatt had the means and the drive to own one of the high performance scows he’d observed many times skimming across the water near his Mahtomedi dock. A-scows are not for the inexperienced sailor. It is said that an A-scow crew must always be at the top
of their game. Thirty-eight feet long with no keel, the boats are so light, they are scary. And they capsize easily. Altstatt learned this the hard way. It all started last May when Altstatt purchased one of Fletcher Driscoll’s A boats. It was Dumbledore, a one-of-a-kind fiberglass scow built in 2003 by a man named Brad Robinson. But more on that later. The boat was the only one in the fleet without an existing crew, which is why Altstatt chose it. With Driscoll’s help, a crew was assembled. Six SEE THE ROBINSON, PAGE 8A
