Mindful Propriety Summer boasts a favorite time in the hearts of many Minnesotans. Suddenly neighbors emerge from hibernation. Grilled entrees fragrance the air and the streets become alive with outdoor activities. Bees and butterflies flit around working their magic in keeping our ecological system in its delicate balance. These simple pleasures are often taken for granted or not always appreciated for the power each living thing has on our planet. Mother Nature proclaims her strength and fragility through each passing day alerting us to do better.

Home Buying in Today’s Hot Summer Market The key to competing in a hot housing market is being prepared to move quickly. Available homes for sale in our area are down 19% from 2016. Working with a licensed Real Estate Agent is essential to learning about premarket listings and buyer competition. Other savvy tips include: • Understand that internet searches are not always adequate or accurate. • Pre-approved financing is essential to being a serious buyer. • Be prepared to write a contract over the list price and know your negotiating options. • Write clean offers by not asking for unnecessary contingencies. Keep timelines, such as inspections, short. • Include a nice letter to the homeowner stating why you want to buy their home. Are you considering moving? Call Betsy Rewald to get a jump on the competition. I am also a certified Senior Real Estate Specialist and have the training and expertise to best assist with your senior relocation.

Action Steps to Help Pollinators in Peril Wasps are critical to the monarch butterflies’ lifecycle. These docile insects are essential pollinators of milkweed. Locally, our diverse category of pollinators includes hundreds of species of wild, native bees and honey bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, ants and even flies. Wild bees, butterflies and moths are delicate insects and are particularly in steep decline because of habitat loss, diseases and parasites, and the increased use of pesticides in both agriculture and home yards. This affects all humans. See website for action steps such as: Plant pollinator/ecosystem-friendly plants in your yard and garden that are not treated with pesticides and provide nectar and pollen. Some hybrids are genetically altered and do NOT provide pollen or nectar. Leave your gardens up all winter and cut back later in spring to support winter nesting and habitat protection. Let your lawn be filled with low cover like clover, creeping charlie, violets, and dandelions. Eliminate insecticides from your lawn and garden, especially neonicotinoids. Perhaps most importantly, the Pollinator Friendly Alliance suggests that a change of philosophy about lawns, gardening and farming are essential to the existence of pollinators in our future. PFA asks that we pay more attention to the natural world around us. Pollinators are working endlessly, providing pollination services for our most nutritious foods and our beautiful, natural world. We need the pollinators. Now the pollinators need our help.

Minnesota’s Nongame Wildlife Program Pollinator Preferences

About one third of our food comes from plants that require pollinators in order to set seed or fruit, yet pollinators are at risk. Honey bee colonies around the world have suffered unprecedented losses in recent years, and many once-common native bumblebees and butterfly species are disappearing. Heavily developed agricultural and urban landscapes lack the habitat to support pollinators. Research on urban gardens has shown that even small flower gardens can provide important food and shelter for wildlife. Native plants in particular offer pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, and other insects and fruit and seeds for birds and mammals. The pollinators they attract also visit neighboring vegetable and fruit crops, which can increase food production. In contrast, lawn-based landscaping, which became the norm over the past century, is much less valuable to wildlife. Many nonnative trees, shrubs, and plants have been bred for beauty and convenience and have little or no wildlife value. Even those nonnative plants that do have nectar and pollen are often blooming at the wrong time for native bees and butterflies.

There are approximately 400 native bee species in Minnesota.

Less than 2% of Minnesota’s prairie habitat remains today 8 SAVOUR

The Minnesota Nongame Wildlife Program works to help thousands of species of Minnesota wildlife like bees, butterflies, songbirds, eagles, loons, frogs, turtles and bats thrive through habitat restorations, surveys and monitoring, technical guidance, and outreach and education - including the eagle and falcon cams!

Home is where the habitat is With native plants and garden vegetables, yards offer a smorgasboard for people and wild creatures.

Almost 90% of the world’s flowering plant species rely on animal pollinators Native Seeds

When purchasing seeds or plants, it's best to work with native plant suppliers. They can offer expert advice and sometimes design services to help you make the right choice for your land. Conventional stores and nurseries generally do not offer localorigin plants. Some so-called "natives" are actually cultivars, which in many cases do not provide nectar, pollen and seeds like true natives do. Find a list of native plant suppliers and more information on native landscaping. Explore county maps of past and current natural habitats.

One of the most innovative and successful programs of its kind in the nation. The Nongame Wildlife Program works to help over 700 species of Minnesota wildlife thrive.

Donations are tax deductible and matched dollar for dollar by the Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) license plate fund. So a $10 donation provides $20 for nongame work. Double your impact.

Honey Bees the Keepers & Healers of our World

by Paula Comstock, NC Bees are in peril, and if they become extinct, major crops, animals and people will eventually perish. Sound incredible? Consider the honey bee’s role in agriculture. They are shipped across the country to pollinate almond groves and alfalfa crops. Without ground almond shells and alfalfa hay, which are major ingredients of cattle feed, millions of pounds of beef per year would disappear. The healthy fats that our diets require; coconut, sunflower and palm oil, along with items made from cotton, would also vanish along with the bees.

Dedicated To Health And Wellness

Amazingly, honey is the only food with therapeutic, medicinal, nutritional and cosmetic value. For centuries, healers around the world have used bee venom and pollen to treat illnesses. Honey is also a well-known antiseptic. The most potent healing honey is Manuka from New Zealand. While the Manuka trees are helping to restore the rain forests, the bees are making a medicinal honey that heals sore throats, digestive illnesses, staph infections, wounds and gingivitis. Unfortunately, bees are under attack from all sides of their hives. The apiaries of New Zealand have become targets of thievery for their “liquid gold.” In the U.S., mosquitos that are thought to be carriers of the Zika virus are being sprayed with chemicals from aircraft, killing bees too. The most widespread damage to our honey bees comes from the herbicide glyphosate, the primary ingredient in the weed killer Roundup. A recent study published in the “Journal of Experimental Biology” found the chemical causes honey bees to starve by decreasing their ability to track and find nectar. Considering that one of every three bites of food that we eat is from a crop pollinated by a honey bee, shouldn’t we be alarmed at the likely possibility of bees disappearing, and take action?

Education comes in two forms: formal and life experiences. Having the guts to parlay both into a freelance business usually comes years into a career. Not so for artistic millennial and creative entrepreneur Melanie Bolson of Tamarack Design Group. She started her workshop and design business with the intention of helping people tap into their authentic self through creating art and working with nature. Melanie’s idea for TDG was sparked from listening to her inner voice. As a graduate of landscape design and horticulture programs, she attempted the traditional career path but found the route uninspiring. As Melanie tinkered

with her hobbies she followed her heart toward the direction of empowerment, creative sustenance and flexibility. Tamarack Design Group is a venture where artistic workshops are held at Melanie’s studio or other partnering locations. Her specialty is guiding people’s creativity using natural materials, such as brass, copper, glass, easy-care plants and grasses. Hands-on workshops are available for making interesting geometric terrariums, kokedamas, himmeli ornaments and jewelry. Curious about what those funny word describe? the other hand, with white, I couldn’t photograph light colored subjects very well. It’s a new challenge for me. Where do your subjects come from?

SV -

They are mostly found pieces of nature scavenged while walking my puggle Jack around the neighborhood. We also spend time each fall in the south of France so you will see images from the Mediterranean also. When walking in the winter you really need to focus on form and texture as opposed to getting caught up in the eye catching colors and shapes of summer. I play mind tricks with myself to see things differently.

MJ -

Simplistic beauty in STILL

You always have something interesting to say about your subjects under the “details” tab within the image. Are you ever at a loss for words about them?

SV -

This past spring, we sat down with Mary Jo Hoffman at her home to discuss why she chooses to post an image a day to her popular STILL blog, and to learn about her creative passions for the future. Your images are so simplistic yet so stunning. Explain how you capture this essence with your camera.

SV -

I’m decidedly low tech. I have a decent camera and finally splurged on a tripod last year. Currently, I am photographing my subjects with a black background after shooting exclusively on white for the past few years. I only use natural light, but sometimes I tweak the shadows in Photoshop before I post the image each night. Often I’m scrambling for light at the end of the day but it always works out somehow.

MJ -

14 SAVOUR

To me, everything has its own beauty. My simple way of arranging and photographing natural objects captures their good side. It’s been a real adjustment photographing on a black backdrop however. Some objects don’t pop as well, but on

MJ - Ha! Like everyone, I have thoughts swirling around in my head. However, I choose to write them down and send them out to the universe every day. As much as it’s my creative project, and as you can see it’s quite prominent in our house, my family is a part of it too. I look to my husband and son, and daughter when she’s home from college, to give input, hold props, and they even occasionally find interesting objects on their own. Jack even chips in. Most entries are just daily musings and observations of mine.

How did STILLBlog.net come to be?

SV -

MJ -

In 2010, I started following

a few blogs and found people having a blast, sharing ideas, and were often posting “something a day.” I learned there are two ways to participate within an online community as a maker/creator or a curator of stuff. I liked the maker angle and wanted to create a post a day that fit in with nature and followed my daily life. Walking with Jack in the woods became a treasure hunt for natural subject matter. The blog design was a collaboration between myself and a graphic designer who was a tenant of ours. I knew I wanted it to reflect a calm, still aesthetic with a lot of white space, sort of with a Scandinavian minimalism. Keeping the same background color creates an uninterrupted scroll of images. I launched the site on January 1st, 2012 with the intention of trying out the “image a day” idea for a one year project to see how it would be received. I also secretly entered the blog design into a contest. I wanted to try and give the blog designer the credit he deserved. It earned first place and as a result the click traffic

exploded with other graphic designers checking it out. I’ve been posting an image a day ever since. I’m committed so it never feels like work. Describe your previous artistic career and how, with what you are doing now, it is shaping your future. SV -

In college I took amateur photography classes and had a little business selling greeting cards with my images. I also have always kept an art journal and still have them all, doodling my ideas and thoughts. Currently, I’m really drawn to collage making and patterns. You can find some examples on the website under “Dawn.” There was a time where I was interested in pattern making with textiles but the industry is really stuck in dated imagery. Target and West Elm have used my images for textiles and I see no end to designers needing nature images. In my previous professional life I was an aerospace engineer who worked with flight management systems. Maybe my images will go into outer space someday! Who knows? stillblog.net MJ -

Caring for pets and the people who love them.

Vet-Approved Flea & Tick Protection for your Canine by Dr. Laura Pritzker There are many safe options to protect our furry companions from fleas and ticks. Fleas are a pain to get rid of once they infest and they can be carriers of tapeworms. Ticks are carriers of several serious diseases such as Lyme. Consult your veterinarian on which of these products fits your canine companion and their lifestyle best. Oral Prevention: This newer class of medication provides a great alternative to other flea and tick products. The benefit is they do not leave residue on the fur and can be more effective for lake loving dogs. The downside is that pests need to bite the dog before dying. They are available only by prescription. Topical Prevention: These products have varying efficacy between brands because they are less regulated and can have different chemical formulations. The benefit of topicals is that the pests do not have to bite in order to be killed. Some brands also offer a repellent component. The downside is the wait time before the dog can get wet. Most of these products can be purchased over the counter, however it’s best to consult your veterinarian for advice.

Flea/tick collars: Collars have been on the market for quite some time. They are impregnated with ingredients that are slowly time released to provide protection to your pet. The benefit of these collars is that they usually last 6 to 8 months. No need to remember to give tablets or apply topicals. The downside is that there is less protection further away from the collar and they are often less effective when they get wet. If you have questions about what works best for your pet, or if you are interested in switching products, please consult your veterinarian!

Heal Yourself by Lisa Bowman What do cellulite, adhesions, and joint pain have in common? They are all connective tissue problems that can be improved and in some cases corrected with a new tool called a FasciaBlaster. Ashley Black is the passionate creator of the FasciaBlaster. The finger like projections dig into the fascia and release it. This process smooths out muscle contractions which not only helps alleviate pain, but also improves your skin’s appearance. Black was stricken with a flesh eating bacteria that entered her spinal fluid which left her hip and back in constant pain and near immobility. Her odds of surviving were only 7%. The odds of complete recovery were nonexistent. She looked into every alternative treatment for relief. Upon studying anatomy, she discovered that connective tissue affects almost every aspect of our structure and affects everything about how one moves to how one feels. During this time she developed a self administered tool to help smooth out fascia and break up adhesions easily. From there she has developed other tools of varying sizes and shapes to hone in on breaking up scars and adhesions. In the fall of 2017, you can expect the release of the FaceBlaster, which helps reduce wrinkles and sagging skin. After healing herself, Black started working on pro athletes. Her tools and techniques are as innovative as they are effective. Sports medicine had been using fascia techniques with success but Black's unique perspective and treatment made her highly sought after. Since smoothing fascia also helps the appearance of skin and reduces the look of cellulite, Black expanded into the world of helping fashion models including Victoria's Secret runway models and other celebrities.

ometimes a product comes along and you think: Genius! Why didn’t someone tell me about that sooner? Introducing GoliathTech MN, a local company representing a superior screw piling system that has revolutionized traditional concrete pilings and foundations. No digging with big machinery and no concrete necessary. The engineering beauty of the GoliathTech screw piles is evident in their sleek, galvanized steel rods and freeze-proof polyurethane shaft. Most impressive though is the system’s low-impact installation. Using small equipment, the helical piles, which are suited to the size and depth of the project, are screwed straight down into any soil type without disrupting the surrounding surface area. The system utilizes various custom heads and connectors to tie into your specific structure. Once installed, the pilings can be built upon immediately, avoiding costly delays while waiting for concrete to cure. The piles can also be removed, reused and recycled, if necessary. Clean and clever, the foundation applications are endless! Anything that needs to be anchored down or supported from the ground up can utilize GoliathTech’s innovative screw pile system. These are lyrics from a song I wrote several years ago, but their meaning took awhile to make sense to me. Then I started questioning, when do bad feelings and putting yourself down become your mantra? At what point do cycles of emotional trauma or addictive behaviors begin? When I was twelve, shortly after my mum’s death, I overheard my dad say that I was using grief as an excuse to get attention. Those words hurt me for so many years. I became torn between yearning to share my feelings or acting stoic. As a result, I feel like I've already crammed in a lifetime trying to make sense of my moods and motivations but have yet to understand the core of who I really am. We all have tragedies in our life but how you choose to carry on matters. I moved on after the early death of my parents but I didn't know how to shed the pain. Instead I turned toward a manic need to control my life. I don't blame my family. If anything I have learned through my own challenges to be more forgiving of theirs. Since opening up my life, focusing on self awareness, and admitting that I have difficulties managing, I have been more accepting to giving and receiving help. Telling the truth is hard. Not the day to day truth, but the hard truth; that we all struggle, we all need love, we all need to accept that we carry a story in our blood. By changing the conversation with ourselves, we can begin to rise above whatever struggles we have, and start to let go. Katy Vernon

Summer Rosé by Jack Farrell Rosé wines and summer go together like sunsets and shorelines, although a warm day on a sunny deck would be a lovely setting also. Rosé wines come in a wide range of dryness and can pair beautifully with everything from fruit salad to fried chicken to spicy stir-fry. The wine is produced using red or black skinned grapes, with the skins imparting darker shades of pink to the wine the longer they are in contact with the pressed juice. Tavel is a famous rosé-producing district in the Rhone Valley of France, about nine miles from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a deep-rooted history of making wonderful wines. Tavel is a unique rosé produced by a type of vinification which makes it completely different from any other rosé. It is more characteristic of a red wine with a long maceration time (skin contact with juice) of 48 to 72 hours. The 2015 Cuvee Royale Tavel wine is a deep, dense pink with explicit aromas of strawberry and cherry. With a velvety texture and spicy notes, it has a delicate fullness in the mouth. Serve with duck à l’orange, spicy Asian dishes, sushi or dry goat cheese. It is a terrific pairing with salad Niçoise. From the high altitude vineyards of Côtes de Provence hails the 2015 Mirabeau Rosé. Made from the beautiful hillside vineyards around the village of Pourcieux, it is a vibrant Provençal Rosé— full of raspberry and cherry fruit with great concentration and a wonderfully lingering finish. Made predominantly from Grenache and Syrah with a dash of Cinsault, its creamy notes and refreshing acidity makes it an elegant aperitif or a perfect pairing for seafood or barbecued meats. The Louis Bouillot Rosé is a unique, non-vintage Crémant de Bourgogne (sparkling wine from Burgundy) that is full of charm. It is made from three varietals: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay. With its salmon pink color and gentle balance of acidity and fruit, this sparkling rosé offers aromas of raspberries and red currants. As a poor man’s pink champagne, this wine holds its own with its most expensive peers. Enjoy this delicious bubbly as an aperitif or paired with smoked salmon, duck or tuna tartare. From Paso Robles, California, Vina Robles Roseum is inspired by the refreshing, dry rosés of southern France. With its sun-soaked slopes and coastal ambiance, Paso Robles has the ideal terroir for echoing the flavor and spirit of other popular Mediterranean wines. Roseum is a deep, coral color with aromas of strawberry, cranberry and a hint of rhubarb. The lively red fruit remains fresh on the palate and can be enjoyed with heartier meals such as hamburgers, pork ribs or Szechuan cuisine. Any of these wines could become your go-to wine for light, easy, foods all summer long!

Acqua Restaurant Group The flagship restaurant that started their budding empire, longtime partners Daron Close, Nicole Whetzel and Executive Chef Chris Whalen opened Acqua WBL in 2009. From the beginning their goal was to create a special experience for each guest on every visit. They achieve this high-mark of consistency by recognizing their staff is their greatest asset and the most vital link to their guest’s experience. The founding partners also progressively encourage their employees to cross-train into

other roles within the restaurant group. Complementing Acqua’s excellent service, Chef Charlie Schneider’s seasonal menus feature rustic Italian dishes deftly refined with French techniques. He takes great care to source the best quality meats, seafood and produce from local purveyors. Nicole’s expertise is found in the beverage program, creating an elevated guest experience by pairing Acqua’s menu with artisan wines and creative cocktails from around the world. Atmosphere is also primo at Acqua. Their lakeside patio dining and outdoor deck is an alfresco White Bear Lake summer tradition.

Acqua Forest Lake Opened in 2013 with partner JJ Maleitzke, Acqua Forest Lake retains the same modern management philosophy, standard of service and delicious food as the original WBL location, but also hosts a larger bar menu to match their expansive deck on the lake. Voted 2016 ‘Top 100 Most Scenic Restaurants and Sunday Brunch’ in the US by online reviewers, this destination location should not be missed.

MIZU Japanese This June, Daron and partners will open a 25 seat sushi bar with a 15 table restaurant next door to Acqua WBL, aptly named MIZU, which means ‘water’ in Japanese.

Heritage Quality & Integrity direct to your table Ranching for four generations in the St. Croix Valley, Peterson Craftsman Meats is a direct-to-consumer and specialty restaurant supplier of Limousin beef, heritage pork and natural lamb.

are cold weather hearty, perfect for our Upper Midwest landscape. This efficiency translates to less intensive land practices, energy requirements and less waste production.

Early in the farm’s history, the Petersons decided to exclusively breed the coveted French Limousin variety of cattle rather than follow the industry norm of raising Angus. Limousin beef is prized by French chefs for its deep, savory taste and exceptional tenderness.

On the plate, the naturally tender cattle yield well marbled steaks, ribs and roasts. Local chefs love the flavorful ground beef as it’s featured prominently on many craft burger menus across the Twin Cities. Peterson also specializes in unique steak cuts, such as Bavette and Denver, that showcase the Limousin’s culinary heritage. Locally, you can find Peterson Craftsman products retail at Sassafras in WBL, and on the menus of Shore 96 in Shoreview, Watershed Cafe in Osceola and The Nova in Hudson.

Limousin cattle are also efficient converters of grass to protein and

growth hormones or antibiotics. A select finishing blend of non-GMO cereal grains is supplemented (much like the garnish on a salad) to develop the Limousin’s prized marbling. Adding pigs and sheep in recent years has improved the farm’s husbandry, feed costs and biodiversity. Custom order your beef, pork and lamb cuts directly from rancher Andy Peterson! Packages are available in premium steak, chop and rib portions, and quarter or half shares. Call or text Andy directly at 715-417-2253 to customize your package today.
