This active group of octogenarians (average age is 85) performed their spring concert last month at Waverly Gardens. Thirty some voices sang a variety of songs from “Wedding Banquet”, “Climbing up the Mountain”, “Soon and Very Soon” to “MacNamara’s Band”, plus twelve other songs
that brought claps and foot tapping to the forefront. The auditorium was filled for two performances. Among the individual performers were Gene Anonsen, a towering tenor, and Bob Wilson who has the smooth voice of a 20 yearold. This is the third year for this fun loving group of musicians who would rather perform than
practice, which makes them so much fun to listen to. Under the expert and precise direction of Helen Olson, a retired music teacher, and the able accompanist, Mary Leonard, also a retired music teacher, the group practices weekly for nine months and performs at a variety of venues. They are enjoying a break for the summer.
There’s a new sheriff in town and his name is Mike Burrell. After Bob Parrott retired in February as our CSO, City Hall has been working on his replacement. Thankfully the wait is over. Burrell began patrolling the streets of North Oaks on June 13. Deputy Burrell has been with the Ramsey County Sheriff ’s Department since 2014. He completed his FTO (Full Time Officer) program in about 8 weeks in December of 2014. During that time he was able to learn patrol operations consistent with Ramsey County policies. Since that time he has become a Drug Recognition Expert by completing a two-week training and additionally spent four days in Florida conducting evaluations on drug impaired subjects. This particular background is an asset for the patrol division of the Ramsey County Sheriff ’s Department. Having a deputy with additional training like this is also beneficial to the North Oaks community. Burrell is currently assigned to the Court division. However, his additional duties with the Montreal Courts apartments have given him experience with patrolling neighborhoods and responding to calls for service. Off-duty he supplements his experience at Regions Hospital assisting with security and any disturbances or emergencies that would require police assistance. Prior to coming to the Ramsey County Sheriff ’s Department, he worked as a police officer with the City of North St. Paul beginning in 2008. Included in this experience he investigated numerous felony level
