About this edition:

In this edition of the 4 Seasons Fun Guide, we have put together a variety of community calendars ranging from White Bear Lake to Stillwater. Events include local farmers markets, summer festivals and signature events such as White Bear Lake’s Manitou Days beginning in June and Hometown for the Holidays in Stillwater during December.

Within this edition, you will find a wide variety of activities to participate in and events to attend throughout the year. In the northeast metro, there are a multitude of lakes for residents, visitors and even pets to enjoy in the warmer months. Between Anoka, Ramsey and Washington County, there are almost 100 public lakes to visit. In the colder months, residents can enjoy fat tire biking on Gateway Trail, an 18-mile trail that runs from St. Paul to Pine Point Regional Park in Stillwater.

If you get hungry during your visit, don’t worry, we provided you with list of local cafes where you can grab a bite, a cup of coffee and baked goods. In White Bear Lake, stop by Keys Café & Bakery for dessert. At The Rusty Cow Café in Circle Pines, enjoy a variety of homemade breakfast combinations and lunch. Located in Stillwater, you will find various coffee shops downtown with a scenic view of the St. Croix River.

There is a little bit of something on every page for everyone. We hope you enjoy your time in the northeast suburbs.

Happiness comes in waves: Lake life in the northeast metro

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota has 11,842 lakes and 6,546 rivers. That is over 13 million acres of water to explore and enjoy. In the northeast metro, there are a multitude of lakes for residents, visitors and even pets to enjoy. Between Anoka, Ramsey and Washington Counties, there are almost 100 public lakes to visit.

If you find yourself near Centerville on a beautiful summer day, spend a day on Centerville Lake. The boat launch is located within the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park Reserve, operated by Anoka County. The lake is also a popular ice fishing spot in the winter. Summer fishing

for Walleye and Bluegill also attracts anglers to the lake.

The Rice Creek Chain of Lakes connects seven lakes through small creeks and river across the cities of Lino Lakes and Centerville.

White Bear Lake is utilized by the residents of White Bear, Mahtomedi, Dellwood, Birchwood and White Bear Township all year round. There are two public fishing piers on this lake, Lions Pier and City Pier. White Bear County Lake Park is a great place to spend the day. The park includes picnic tables, a playground, swimming beach and a boat launch.

Head up north a few miles

on Highway 61 to Forest Lake. The town has multiple lakes for fisherman and visitors to enjoy. Forest Lake has a large beach with a playground. There also is a boat launch and boat rental located on the first lake for residents and visitors to use during the summer months. Minnesota has 35 state water trails with over 4,500 miles of terrific paddling to enjoy. In Washington County, visit William O’Brien State Park, located in Marine on St. Croix, for the day. Take your family out in a canoe or enjoy some alone time in a kayak as you make your way down the St. Croix River.

Discover pet-friendly adventures in the northeast metro

If you’re in the northeast metro, you are in a great area to enjoy both nature and pet-friendly activities with your furry friend. From exploring the many parks and trails, to visiting dog-friendly breweries and cafes to going to off-leash parks, your bound to find something to do with Fido.

The Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park has numerous petfriendly trails and lakes. It’s a great place for a walk, run or hike with your dog. Many of the trails have scenic views, and the lakes offer a chance for your dog to cool off. Although it’s a bit south of the

northeast metro, Afton State Park is known for its pet-friendly hiking trails and large wooded areas. Dogs must be on a leash, but it’s a beautiful spot for a day out with your pet.

If you are hungry or thirsty, consider bringing your pet to the Dog House Bar and Grill in Maplewood. The business has a large outdoor patio where you can enjoy a drink or meal with your dog by your side. The Dog House often offers dog-friendly events too.

If you want to go shopping, many of the shops in Downtown

White Bear Lake are dog friendly. If your dog needs to run off some steam, consider visiting an off-leash park like the Otter Lake Off-Leash Dog Area, Rice Creek Off-Leash Dog Area or the Arden Hills Off-Leash Dog Park. If your dog needs to cool-off, consider visiting Matoska Beach along Lake Avenue in White Bear Lake. (The city has yet to decide the fate of the dog beach, so be sure to check if open before you visit.)

Downtown White Bear Lake offers many pet-friendly events, activities, and locations.

Paddle Boards and Kayaks

Throughout the northeast metro, paddleboard and kayak lovers will find no shortage of lakes to bring their crafts onto the water and enjoy an hour or two’s worth of relaxing fun. From White Bear Lake to Bald Eagle, Forest Lake and Snail Lake Regional Park in Shoreview, there are many options for those who enjoy their paddling experiences standing up or sitting down.

With a whopping total of 5,744 acres, White Bear, Bald Eagle and Forest Lake provide plenty of open water for paddlers to bask in the calm of these larger locales. All three lakes have boat launches to cast a paddleboard or kayak. Hugo-based rental company Twin Panda Rentals provides kayak and paddleboard rentals for all three lakes, as does Tally’s Dockside in White Bear Lake.

Snail Lake in Vadnais Heights, despite its size clocking in at 190 acres, it is no less perfect for paddleboarders and kayakers alike. Located 11 miles north of downtown St. Paul, its location is easily accessible to those looking for an afternoon/evening getaway on board their watercraft.

Local residents have dozens of park choices to visit for experiences in nature and outdoor activities.

Fat Tires and E-Bikes

In the colder months, residents in the northeast metro can still enjoy a bike ride by taking their fat tire bikes out on the multiple trails throughout the area.

Fat tire biking is permitted on various trails in Ramsey County at Hidden Falls Regional Park in St. Paul, Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton and Gateway State Trail.

Hidden Falls has almost seven miles of paved multi-use trails,

much of it with a view of the Mississippi River.

Gateway State trail is a paved, 18-mile trail that runs from St. Paul to Pine Point Regional Park, located near Stillwater. The trail is fairly level, but the scenery varies from urban St. Paul through woods, parks, fields, wetlands and past lakes.

In Washington County, Lake Elmo Park Reserve remains one of the few parks where biking is

open in the winter. Seven miles of the park’s turf trail is packed for fat tire biking, with plenty of lake views, hills, open prairie and forest for exploring.

Electric bikes are available on both state trails and regular bike paths as long as they are equipped with an electric motor that has a power output of no more than 750 watts. Additionally, state law does not permit anyone under 15 to operate electric bikes.

The art of cafes in the northeast metro

There are endless cafes and restaurants throughout the northeast metro among local shops and businesses. If you find yourself in the area for breakfast, lunch or dinner, there is a wide range of locally owned cafes you can choose from.

Cafes in the area include a variety of drink and food options for your tastebuds and cravings to indulge in ranging from coffee houses, bakeries, sandwich shops and more.

If you find yourself in White Bear Lake stop by Keys Cafe and Bakery for breakfast, lunch, or a tasty dessert or pastry.

Down the road in Shoreview, you’ll find The Winkin’ Rooster, known for its breakfast menu, coffee, sandwiches, gluten free

options and great service. Not only does the café have good food, but it also supports other local businesses such as Riff’s Smoke House, located a few minutes away in Arden Hills.

Started over 10 years ago Kingdom Baking, located in Blaine, officers a wide variety of pastries and coffee for a morning pick me up. If you are stopping in for lunch, enjoy a bowl of soup, salad or a sandwich. Grab a bakery item for the car ride home.

Next door in Circle Pines is The Rusty Cow Café. The café is family owned and serves a wide variety of homemade breakfast combinations and lunch. At the café is also the Missing Man Table, displayed all year round to honor those who have served and are missing.

In Stillwater, grab a cup of coffee at multiple coffee houses downtown before taking a stroll by the St. Croix River. The Daily Grind Espresso Cafe offers a wide variety of coffee, from plain dark roast to a caramel brulé latte. At MADE Coffee, located at the bottom of the staircase to the scenic overlook, order your favorite cup of joe and enjoy the patio that overlooks parts of downtown or climb the staircase to the overlook.

Whether you are looking for a quick pick me up on the way to the cabin or looking to try a new restaurant, the northeast metro has something for everyone to indulge in.
