Take a Field Trip to the Place To Discover It All If you ever wondered how much noise 1,000 excited elementary-school students can make, come to Whitaker Center and find out. April through June is the peak season for teachers to bring groups of students to the Center. On many days, we will welcome 800 to 1,000 young visitors. It is such a rewarding experience to hear and see these students truly excited about learning. The Harsco Science Center is a popular choice for many teachers. They know that we have developed each exhibit gallery to focus on specific learning objectives that relate directly to Pennsylvania’s academic standards. Teachers also know that students respond so well to our distinctive, hands-on, highly interactive approach to learning science. Many teachers choose to include a Discovery Lab in their field trip plans. In a typical year, approximately 8,000 students will participate in a Discovery Lab experience presented by our educators. Teachers can select from 15 different inquiry-based labs covering a range of disciplines, including physics, chemistry, engineering, geology, and meteorology. An experience in Select Medical IMAXŽ Theater is considered by many teachers to be an essential element of a visit to Whitaker Center. Last year, approximately 22,600 students in school groups attended an IMAX film presentation. In addition to the featured films, teachers may select a documentary from our library of large format films. The library currently contains a total of 11 films, including the very popular Hubble 3D and Tornado Alley 3D. Performing arts programs at Whitaker Center also attract about 5,000 students in school groups each year. Many of the 100 productions in Sunoco Performance Theater offer daytime performances especially for school groups. It is our goal to increase the number of students who visit the theater, because we believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience live performing arts. Year after year, hundreds of school groups return to Whitaker Center to explore and discover, through the distinctive learning experiences we offer. For thousands of students from across Central Pennsylvania, Whitaker Center is certainly the place to discover it all!

Los Lonely Boys Presented by Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Saturday, April 5 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm After crossing into the mainstream music scene with their Grammy® Award-winning, multi-chart topping gold single, Heaven (2004), Los Lonely Boys continues to garner critical acclaim. Dubbed by themselves as, “Texican rock n’ roll,” the trio combines elements of rock, blues, soul, country, and Tejano – reaching a diverse fan base across the country. Consisting of Henry (guitar, vocals), Jojo (bass guitar, vocals), and Ringo (drums, vocals) – the Garza brothers have followed their father’s tradition, performing as a band of brothers. Their fourth studio album, Rockpango, paves the way for the band’s entrance into the rock n’ roll pantheon of legendary musical artists, while remaining true to themselves. The trio’s ever-expanding musical vision fills the set with new facets that further reveal the group’s already notable artistic diversity. The track 16 Monkeys is a funky slice of infectious neo-bohemian wit and wordplay. According to Jojo, while reflecting on over eight years of championship seasons, “We’re still family, we’re still three brothers, we’re still doing what the good Lord has blessed us with, and that’s singing and playing for people who really want to listen.”

Straight No Chaser Presented by Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Wednesday, May 14 I The Forum, 8pm When it came time to come up with a concept for their fourth fulllength album, the members of Straight No Chaser (SNC) decided to think big. The 10-member a cappella group had already achieved things they’d never anticipated since forming as students at Indiana University in 1996, including signing a major-label deal with Atlantic Records; embarking on nationwide multi-city tours; having their story optioned by DreamWorks for an upcoming feature film; and becoming a global sensation. SNC reached out to some of their favorite recording artists to be featured soloists on their fourth album, Under The Influence. The result is an inspired and unprecedented a cappella reimagining of classic songs by the group and the icons who made them famous, including Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours), Dolly Parton’s Jolene, Elton John’s Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, and Phil Collins’ Against All Odds. 10

Dark Star Orchestra Presented by Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Tuesday, May 20 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 7pm Performing to critical acclaim worldwide for nearly 15 years and over 2000 shows, Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) continues the Grateful Dead concert experience. Their shows are built off the Dead’s extensive catalog and through the talent of seven fine musicians. On any given night the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead's 30 years of extensive touring, or use their catalog to program a unique set list for the show. DSO has performed throughout the United States and Europe. They continue to grow their fan base by performing at national festivals including, Bonnaroo, All Good Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, Mountain Jam, Summer Camp, Wakarusa and 10,000 Lakes. In addition, DSO hosts its own annual gathering, Dark Star Jubilee, where they headline three nights and are joined by a mix of established and up and coming national touring acts. The band has featured guest performances from five original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean GodchauxMacKay, Vince Welnick, Tom Constanten; and even toured with longtime Dead soundman, Dan Healy.

Bacon Brothers Presented by Capital BlueCross is an Independent Licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association

Thursday, July 10 I Sunoco Performance Theater, 7:30pm Long before Kevin Bacon launched his prolific stage and screen career, and before Michael Bacon became known as an acclaimed film and television composer, they were just two brothers from Center City, Philadelphia. The Bacon Brothers’ 2009 release, New Year’s Day, is laden with their trademark gritty rock and a touch of Philly soul, and hearkens back to those roots in the City of Brotherly Love. While still encountering critics due to Kevin’s onscreen notoriety, the band continues to win believers – show by show, album by album. The New Yorker recently said, “Hollywood hangs like an albatross around the neck of any movie star turned musician, but this duo shakes off the burden of fame with sharply executed rock that has a blue-collar, rootsy edge.” With 2011 marking 16 years of the Bacon Brothers band’s existence, any cynical preconceptions about well-known actors “dabbling” in music now can safely be discarded. The duo’s latest album, Philadelphia Road -- The Best of the Bacon Brothers (2011) is a collection of songs from the brothers’ first four studio CDs, as well as Guilty of the Crime, which was recorded with the Bellamy Brothers. Narrated by Academy Award®-winner Christopher Plummer, Titans of the Ice Age 3D transports viewers to the beautiful frozen landscapes of North America, Europe and Asia; ten thousand years before modern civilization. Dazzling computer-generated imagery brings this mysterious era to life – from saber-toothed cats and cave bears to dire wolves and woolly mammoths – giants both feared and hunted by prehistoric humans. Moviegoers will explore the story of Zed, one of the most complete Colombian Mammoth skeletons ever uncovered; extracted in 2008 from under a Los Angeles parking lot next to the famous La Brea Tar Pits. Shot largely in and around the picturesque Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, Alaska and the Northern Great Plains, Titans of the Ice Age will captivate audiences with a vision of a world inhabited by creatures both familiar and exotic—leading us to consider the possible fates of today’s living mammals. Arts & Culture: Brought to Life through a Lens An Interview with GK Visual

Over the past several years, Whitaker Center has had the privilege of working with the award-winning Harrisburg based production team, GK Visual, LLC. Known for their creativity, quality work and professionalism – they remain experts in the field of cinematography. Owner and founder, Nate Kresge, shared his experiences working on projects for Whitaker Center and other businesses throughout the mid-state.

WC: Why is it important to work with local community organizations? NK: “The Central Pennsylvania community has been very welcoming and encouraging to GK Visual. Often we find ourselves using the services and goods of our clients. Our team loves taking advantage of the many offerings that Whitaker Center provides. Each time we walk through the doors of Whitaker, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to have a gem like this in our area.” WC: What role do you feel arts/culture plays in Harrisburg? NK: “The arts are one of the elements that make our region so wonderful. Even though we are a short drive to some of the nation's largest cities, the Central Pennsylvania area provides a wealth of enriching art and culture right here in our own back yard. Being able to see both local talent and national acts on Whitaker's stage is a huge privilege that many areas are not blessed with.” WC: Share your experience of conveying Whitaker Center to the public. NK: "The team at GK Visual loves to tell our clients' stories through video. Whitaker Center has such great stories to tell. In order to give this great organization a mouthpiece we went to the people who know it best: the patrons, families, teachers, students, volunteers, and donors. Everyone had so much to say about how the arts and education that Whitaker Center provides, has impacted their lives." WC: GK Visual created a promotional reel in celebration of Whitaker Center’s upcoming 15th Anniversary (September 9, 2014). Please explain how this project impacted your team. NK: “I'm sure you can tell we, along with the many people we interviewed, love the Whitaker Center. It's always a thrill to be able to tell the story of something you're passionate about and this video was one of our favorites. We can't wait to see what chapter gets written in the next 15 years of Whitaker's story.” To learn more, please visit, www.gk-visual.com.

Interactive, high-definition videoconferencing technology allows students to watch and listen to operations performed by the medical center’s surgical staff in real time. Students have an opportunity to ask questions and engage with the professionals. Highmark’s $250,000 gift will support the program’s ongoing operating costs. The other $250,000 of Highmark Blue Shield’s $500,000 gift will be put towards the needed upgrades and improvements of Select Medical IMAX Theater. Since Whitaker Center’s opening in 1999, Select Medical IMAX Theater has attracted 1.7 million people. Of the nearly 100,000 Science Center visitors each year, 39% also see an IMAX film. In addition, 76% of the 30,000 school students who visit in school groups also see an IMAX film. Highmark’s gift will help Whitaker Center keep in line with industry standards. “We greatly value our partnership with Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, and we look forward to building on our longstanding relationship in the years to come,” said Onorato. Whitaker Center thanks Highmark Blue Shield for their generosity and willingness to invest in our mission and vision for years to come.

Volunteer Spotlight Mike and Anna Langello have been volunteers of Whitaker Center since 2012. This dynamic father/daughter duo have served in many different capacities, from assisting with Visitors Guide distribution, ushering for Select Medical IMAX® Theater films and performances in Sunoco Performance Theater, as well as assisting with our Surgery Live! program. They enjoy volunteering during Surgery Live! so much, they recruited another family member to join the ranks at Whitaker Center. Donna Langello is Mike’s wife and Anna’s mother, whom is a recently retired nurse and might be the real reason for Mike and Anna’s passion for this educational program. Mike and Anna consistently exemplify the friendly, helpful, and professional attitude that Whitaker Center takes pride in. To date, Mike and Anna have contributed over 450 combined hours of volunteer time to Whitaker Center. A big thank you to Anna and Mike for their time, energy, and generosity.

Anna and Mike Langello

We are so lucky to have volunteers such as Mike and Anna Langello and many others like them. We wouldn’t be able to provide the services we do to the Harrisburg and the Central PA Region without them. A contribution of one’s time and talent is one of the most generous gifts one can make. We are currently accepting applications from volunteers (ages 16 and up) to fill a variety of roles. For more information about volunteering, visit whitakercenter.org or contact Katie Hicks, Volunteer and Membership Coordinator at khicks@whitakercenter.org or 717-724-3857.

Corporate EITC Giving Continues to Provide Opportunities for Public School Students Whitaker Center is once again the grateful recipient of corporate contributions made through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program this past year. The ultimate beneficiaries are the many thousands of children who visit Whitaker Center on field trips at greatly reduced admission fees. Students receive hands-on learning through their field trip experiences that inspire a love for learning that may one day lead to future vocations in science, engineering, medicine, or the arts. The objective of the EITC program is to encourage corporations to support innovative educational efforts, either through scholarships or Educational Improvement Organizations, such as Whitaker Center. Due to the limited amount of public dollars set aside each year by the Commonwealth for corporate tax credits, the program is quite competitive. For more information about Pennsylvania’s EITC program, visit www.newPa.com/EITC.

Whitaker Center thanks the following corporations who contributed through EITC between October 1, 2012 and November 30, 2013: American Sentinel Insurance Company Capital BlueCross Carlisle Carrier Corporation Centric Bank Fulton Bank High Industries, Inc. Morefield Communications M&T Bank

Whitaker Center Educational Outreach Fund With the help and generosity of individual and corporate donors, Whitaker Center was able to form the Whitaker Center Educational Outreach Fund (WCEOF), formerly referred to as Access Funds. WCEOF makes funds available to assist with the cost of students and their chaperons, who would otherwise be unable to benefit from Whitaker Center programs.

How does it work? WCEOF offers reduced admission fees for Harsco Science Center, Discovery Labs, Select Medical IMAX® Theater documentary films, and may provide assistance with transportation costs. Additionally, it offers discounts for our Surgery Live! program and summer Discovery Camps. The funds also provide discounts on our Whitaker On Wheels (WOW) educational outreach program.

Who can use these funds? Eligible organizations include schools with a majority of students who qualify for the federal free and reduced-price school lunch program, Central Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations that serve low-income or disadvantaged youth groups ages 4 through 18, as well as underserved youth groups.

Who supports these funds? WCEOF is generously supported by the following individuals and corporations: • ArcelorMittal, Inc. • Brody Science Fund for Youth • Estate of Jeanne M. Swope • Joan S. and Joseph K. Goldsmith Fund • Phoenix Contact • The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation • Très Bonne Année Wine and Gala Auction Fund-a-Need Donors For more information on WCEOF or to request funds for a school or youth program, please contact Whitaker Center’s Group Sales Office at 717-724-3862 or school_services@whitakercenter.org.
