Tom Comfort Memorial Cricket Match – Sunday 28th May We shall be gathering at Nether Whitacre Cricket Club for our annual cricket match to remember Tom on Sunday 28 May. A cricket match between Nether Whitacre and friends, and Tom’s old Cambridge University friends, will start at 2.00pm and end about 6pm with a tea break between innings.

We are organising a BBQ and bar, and there will also be tea and cakes served all afternoon as usual. Any donations of cakes/raffle prizes will be extremely welcome!

It is a difficult day for all of us but also a lovely one too, and always good to share memories of Tom with so many good friends and family members to support us.

There will be an opportunity to make donations on the day for Tom’s fund at the British Heart Foundation, which currently stands at over £15,000 and goes towards research into, and treatment of, rare congenital heart defects such as his. Top women cyclists return to race in North Warwickshire North Warwickshire steps back into the sporting spotlight on Friday 9th June, when Atherstone once again plays host to the start of the Warwickshire ‘stage’ of The Women’s Tour.

The international women’s cycle race first came to Warwickshire in 2016, when thousands of people lined the streets of Atherstone to cheer the riders on their way. The town’s historic Market Square will be the focus of attention in 2017, as the riders sign in for the Warwickshire stage of the race and receive their souvenir ‘Charlie Bear’ from local school-children.

There will be 17 top teams of professional women’s cyclists. Well known competitor Lizzie Deignan (formerly Armitstead) must have counted Charlie Bear as her lucky mascot in 2016, as she eventually went on to win the Women’s Tour!

Mick Bennett, Women’s Tour Race Director, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be taking the Women’s Tour back to Atherstone in 2017 after the success of last year’s stage. It was the first time the race had ever visited Warwickshire and we received such a great reception from the thousands of spectators that turned out. We’re hoping to build on that again this year and know it will be a fantastic occasion on Friday 9th June, attracting cycling fans from far and wide!”

From the Market Square, the cyclists will take the same route as 2016 along North Street, back along Long Street before leaving the town via Coleshill Road heading for Arley, Fillongley and Meriden. They continue the Warwickshire stage through the heart of the University of Warwick via Gibbett Hill Road, Kenilworth, negotiating some steep inclines at Edge Hill and Burton Dassett before finishing in Royal Leamington Spa at around 2.15pm.

Warwickshire is Stage 3 of 5. The cyclists start their first race in Northamptonshire on Wednesday 7th June, before completing the second Stage in Staffordshire. After Warwickshire, the teams move onto Chesterfield and Derbyshire before the final Stage in London on Sunday 11th June.

The start time in Atherstone has yet to be confirmed so keep an eye on the Council’s website www.northwarks.gov.uk/wt2017 for details. It will be continually updated with local information about events leading up to 9th June, road closures, alternative parking and routes. Through the Window We are a week into April and spring is ‘springing’. First blossoms are out and in the garden, tulips take over from daffodils.

Birds are feeding on the seeds outside the bay window and another year is in progress.

Things to look out for before the new magazine comes out - frog spawn, young birds, perhaps pheasant or partridge etc. Bluebells are now in flower and some cowslips can be seen. Bumble bees work in the grass and collect nectar from the flowering plants.

I've taken my second short walk of the day. It’s now lighter and warmer; the dog and I can enjoy some sunshine. Light winds rustle the trees and the leaves brushing together in the wind makes you think they might be ‘talking’ to one another - who knows.

Look around the village lanes; here in Whitacre the marsh marigold is in flower again. You have to look for it as it likes damp places, though I believe it also enjoys sunshine. Here you can find one in the 40 acre lane if so search hard enough. Wind brooms can also be found around Whitacre.

OUR BIG PROBLEM is people putting their rubbish along the lanes and in the ditches; I wish they would respect the countryside.

Looking forward to the new magazine which will be bi-monthly, starting June/July; it is called Connecting Four.

St Cuthberts Shustoke Bellringers Thank goodness the weather is warming up. The tower, - indeed, the church at St Cuthbert's, is not heated during the winter except for Sunday services and the occasional wedding. The ringers arrive wearing overjackets, pullovers, thermal underwear and hats, but the hats, jackets and jumpers are removed before ringing, as loose clothing is a bit of a hazard. The first ringers to arrive switch on the electric convector and turbo heaters. A full two kilowatts of heating for an uninsulated draughty ringing room, clock room, belfry and spire raises the temperature by about one degree centigrade per hour.

So with the psychological heating on, the clock is wound up and ringing commences.

The practices are structured on an easy going schedule.

Any new members or visitors are introduced and made aware of basic tower safety procedures.

Firstly bells are 'rung up'. The number of bells varies with the number of ringers that turn up.

When the bells are up, those who can ring unsupervised have about five minutes of ringing rounds (scales) or called changes (a prerequisite of methods).

A period of idle chat on any subject takes place for about five minutes while the instructors get their breath.

Next, any new or novice ringers have individual tuition from Dick or Joe, the tower instructors, for about five minutes each.

More idle chat, or technical discussion on bellringing takes place before the cycle repeats until 'ringing down' at nine o'clock or thereabouts.

The technical discussion this week centred on how many changes (different orders of ringing a set number of bells) form a 'peal', -the maximum. A peal on three bells has a maximum of six changes. - 123, 231, 312, 213, 321 and 132.

My question for you this week is 'How many changes are possible on four bells?

If you hear the bells ringing at any of the churches at any time, WE ARE IN! You are welcome to join us for a ringing experience at suitable times or just to watch at any time.

Nether Whitacre & District Natural History Group Our lanes are full of May blossom this month as the hawthorn flowers erupt and spread their snowy covering amongst the hedgerows.

We had an unusual occurrence the other Thursday when we met but there was only three of us and we actually decided not to ring and go home early. We discussed this and realised that we are very lucky to only miss a very few practices each year and often these are only over the summer holiday period or due to illness. However to meet and not have enough is very rare even if our numbers are a little scarce.

Easter for Bellringers is not as busy or strenuous as the Christmas period. Perhaps this is also related to the weather being warmer and us not needing to ring to keep the blood flowing. It usually does spell the end of a fridge like tower on practice night as the sandstone starts to warm up and hold residual heat.

Many of you will have heard the news coverage of the policeman's funeral from the Westminster terror attack. You would have heard the muffled ringing rung at Southwark Cathedral in London which was very well struck as you would expect.

It is one of the ways you will hear the bells being rung in the same manner as most towers ring for Remembrance Sunday. This was obviously for a funeral but the difference sound does make people listen and consider the noise which is not as bright and cheerful as ringing should be for events like weddings.

Summer is upon us and we have a few weddings to look forward to and we have even been asked to help out at neighbouring towers who seem to be even shorter of ringers than we are.

I know that a new Rector has been announced and will be joining you soon and I wish you and her all the very very best for the future.

Chloe is now recovering from her major spinal surgery which went really well but is going to take a long time for her to begin to feel better from. She can't quite understand why she has to sleep downstairs (we are not allowed to lift her upstairs at present) or why she cannot be in her normal wheelchair (she isn't allowed to wheel her own chair for a little while longer). Given all the changes she has faced she remains remarkably cheerful most of the time and we will all be glad when she is able to move without it hurting quite so much.

We are trying to settle in but with anything new it always takes time to adjust. I have spent some of the money given to me as my leaving gift on a new kettle which is invariably switched on! Please feel free to call in and have a cuppa if you are in the area you will be more than welcome.

It is always sad to say goodbye to friends and places and I hope it won't surprise you to know that I certainly miss seeing you and being part of the life of the parishes. I had some very happy times being part of your lives and I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you for that privilege. I haven't had the time yet to find a place to worship, once Chloe is fully recovered I will be trying out a church or two to see if I feel at home in any of them.

I would like to thank the parish team for their help in what has been a very difficult time and for their continued support to us as a family. I would like to thank the churchwardens for their patience and in particular thank Hazel and Janice for their unstinting help and support during the last 18 months or so.

Thank you to all of you who have offered me the hand of friendship, you will never be forgotten.

DAW MILL UPDATE Unfortunately the Public Inquiry in February was not completed within the 8 day allocation and therefore will be resumed for a further two days on May 16th & 17th. This will be taken up hearing Harworth's final witness and the Barristers closing statements. This extension has placed further strain on our recourses and cost us additional funding.

Due to a number of technical issues that arose during the Inquiry we are now considering applying for a costs order against Harworths. There is much technical work to be done before a final decision can be taken on this but it looks pretty certain. Should such a claim be successful it would be our intention to try and re-distribute any monies received back to contributors on a pro-rata basis.

Funding has been a huge success due to the untold generosity of so many of you and I am eternally grateful for your help. To date we have collected a total of £32,450 with £9,900 of that coming from private donations and the rest from surrounding Town and Parish Councils. Our costs to date for our expert witnesses and barrister amount to £31,915. We now have the additional costs of the further two days to fund.

Following the close of the Inquiry on May 17th., the Inspector will have about 6 weeks in which to complete her report and forward her recommendation to the Secretary of state.

We do not expect his final decision until later in the year.

Once again, my sincere thanks to all who have contributed so generously to our fight.

Looking after St Giles Church Every building needs repairs from time to time – that’s what Friends of St Giles’ Church do.

We are a small group of local people who raise money throughout the year to help maintain the building. We’ve done coffee mornings, tea party’s, soup kitchen, quizzes, concerts, outings to raise money, raffles; we also have our regular donators – the Dog Inn, and Mrs Edge Honey donations, which help to boost the funds. We raise about £2,500 per year, and since 2002 when Friends started we have raised over £48,000 towards the Church.

It is thanks to the many residents of the village who come and buy a cup of tea/cake, or take part in a quiz that have helped to keep the church in good order over the years – so please spare a thought if there is coffee morning/ quiz, please try and come along to support us.

Our efforts over the past few years have focused on getting the East Window repaired, and we are pleased to finally be getting that underway. It is a costly project, but it is a beautiful large stained glass window that we would not want to lose. If you haven’t seen it – call into the Church.

There are always things to be done – e.g. the stone work is needing attention, so our efforts in 2017 will continue. Sylvia has kindly agreed to host another garden party (Botts Green) which is always well attended, we will hold another village quiz in the autumn, there is a music concert at the beginning of Summer (Dog Lane) - details elsewhere in the magazine.

It’s a small bit we do for the church, but what it does more importantly is bring together the village and a sense of community spirit and pride. Its lovely to catch up with friends and neighbours, and for causes on our doorstep.

We meet formally at the beginning of March to agree priorities and activities for the coming year. If you’d like to be involved in whatever way please do get in touch, even if you’re just happy to bake a cake!

The route of the annual May Bank Holiday Rogation walk has been checked and there were a couple of fallen trees across the Ladywalk section which runs beside the River Tame from St John's, Lea Marston, to the birdwatchers car park at the end of Faraday Avenue. This is possibly the wildest and most interesting part of the route running along the boundary of the bird sanctuary for a mile and a quarter overlooking the river for the first half mile.

An additional alternative route diversion has been added to this year's walk taking in Teal's Wood from the railway bridge in Hogrill's End Lane along the Derby railway line to the junction with the Leicester line, then along the railway path and over the bridge to the Shustoke Reservoir path which follows the River Bourne downstream to the pedestrian bridge. Cross the bridge and head towards the reservoir embankment through rather a muddy stretch of meadow, then round the reservoir perimeter path to rejoin the main route at the Plough in Shustoke village. There was more mud through the thicket at the top end of the reservoir before taking the path along the field boundary up to St Cuthbert's by the Griffin.

The team assisted many other volunteers on the first of April in clearing the garden of the vicarage. This task could not have been completed without the help of Tony Rumble, Lucinda and the children. Tony's mini digger and the drive on mower were indispensable.

We have also started to mow the grass at Shustoke churchyard in areas where there are no snowdrops, daffodils or bluebells. It is akin to dot to dot picture drawing. Lanes are mowed around the patches of flowers, and, if they have seeded and died down by Saturday 29th April the team will strim, rake and mow overall.

The important message for this month is that:CHRISTIAN AID week takes place from May 14th to the 21st.

A volunteer will soon be visiting you and asking for your contribution.

Christian Aid is celebrating 60 years of trying to improve conditions for those in the world who are struggling through no fault of their own. They are either refugees or victims of drought, earthquakes or war.

The title “Christian “ is used to indicate that this is love in action, which Christ advocated, but all nationalities and religions are supported whenever possible. eople are encouraged to help themselves and so are often given equipment not cash. Examples of this are goats, weaving looms and water pumps. Please be generous as usual.

On 6th April we remembered Kidney Research UK and £85 was sent to them after the coffee morning. On May 4th the profits go to our own Methodist Church here in Whitacre. June it is the turn of St. John’s Ambulance.

Messy Church was again a great success and there will be another to look forward to soon.

Open Gardens are planned for July 1st and 2nd and with luck the roads in Whitacre will be back to normal by then, whatever “normal" is! Certainly our visiting preachers have trouble finding their way to us.

Hopefully everyone will have had a marvellous Easter, and May Day so the next festival will be Pentecost or Whitsun on June 4th

INTERREGNUM - update Following the announcement that the Revd Becky Stephens will be our new Rector, we have a date for her Institution - June 13th at 7.00pm at St Giles Nether Whitacre.

The whole parish welcomes Becky and her family and we are really looking forward to them joining us.

In the meantime thanks without measure go to all those inside the parish and outside that have kept things going these past months. Without you all, we would not have done what we have, or be where we are.

With this edition, Tidings ceases to be . Janice has been marvellous in keeping the magazine going and faithfully editing it 10 times a year, our heartfelt thanks go to her for this. Thanks also go to Keith and the teams of volunteers who fold, staple and distribute it in their own time. It could not have happened without you all and we are relying on your continuing help with delivery. (We will be changing the delivery routes to nearer to your homes but to all houses, the more volunteers the fewer the number to deliver. If you can help with delivery please contact Vanessa Gaskin (details below) Connecting Four comes into publication in June/July, it is still being produced and delivered by volunteers but will be printed professionally. The magazine is moving to six editions per year, starting with June/July. It will be delivered to all of the houses in the villages as the parish councils are contributing to costs and it will include their news. Warwickshire County Council have also given us a grant to help with start up costs. Connecting Four will also carry advertising and we are grateful for the continuing support from the advertisers, we are hoping that there will also be voluntary contributions from readers, but not until early 2018.

If you wish to place an article or advert you will need to plan ahead because of the bi-monthly editions. We also want to advertise your social events and will have a double page spread that will pull out from the centre with your events on, as well as useful contact details. Please could you get the events and articles, preferably in Word or Publisher format, to us by May 1st; we will accept them after that date but they may not make the June/July edition.
