Hillman Cancer Center Gala

The 2013 Hillman Cancer Center Gala, “Living Courageously: A Future Without Cancer,” proved to be a tremendous success, raising $4 million! Benefiting cancer research and patient care at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and UPMC CancerCenter, the evening honored the philanthropic generosity of nearly 900 of the region’s leaders, including partners, physicians, and clinicians. Held at CONSOL Energy Center, the celebration kicked off with jazz artist and Pittsburgh native Benny Benack III on the trumpet, serenading guests during the cocktail reception. Those attending enjoyed a delicious dinner, and entertainment by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Composer Robert Miller, whose work has been featured in UPMC commercials, directed the orchestra in a world premiere performance of three compositions, inspired by the stories of patients, physicians, and researchers. Presented by PNC, the annual fundraising gala was co-chaired by Christina and Carlos Cardoso, and Becky Cost Snyder; Elsie and Henry Hillman, and Cathy and Sy Holzer served as honorary co-chairs. This year, the PNC/UPCI Director’s Distinguished Scholar Award was given to Dr. Theresa L. NimickWhiteside, professor of pathology, immunology, and otolaryngology. “The gala was a wonderful celebration and recommitment for all of those who are helping to advance a future without cancer,” says Nancy E. Davidson, M.D., director of UPMC CancerCenter and UPCI. — M.D.
