Pittsburgh Opera’s Sparkling Speakeasy Gala 5645 Butler Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201 Mexican War Streets House & Garden Tour

Pittsburgh Opera’s Sparkling Speakeasy saw close to 300 people eat, drink, and be merry at the Bitz Opera Factory the evening of Saturday, October 7th. Guests enjoyed special performances by Pittsburgh Opera’s Resident Artists, live jazz with the Andy Reamer Quartet, magic and storytelling with Jon Tai, and aerial presentations by Iron City Aerial. The delectable food was catered by V&V Scratch Kitchen, The Cheese Queen, and Brown Bear Bread Café. Lo Bar Cocktail Services offered innovative custom cocktails featuring all Pennsylvania-made spirits from Lawrenceville Distilling, Big Springs Spirits, and Quantum Spirits. The Sparkling Speakeasy raised nearly $135,000 for Pittsburgh Opera. u

Twenty Five Club This year’s Twenty Five Club annual fall luncheon and fundraising event, “Falling Water Then and Now”, takes place Friday, November 17, 2023 at the Duquesne Club. For over 84 years, the Twenty Five Club has lit up the lives of parents and their frail newborn babies with their mission of providing the utmost in critical care and research that specifically targets pre-natal and neonatal infants with state of the art medical equipment. Violins of Hope Oct. 7, through Nov. 21, 2023

On Oct. 5, Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh celebrated the launch of its highly anticipated Violins of Hope project with a reception honoring partners and sponsors who have helped bring the treasured collection and its inspiring stories to Pittsburgh. Thanks to their efforts, the landmark community project has expanded to over 60 cultural, educational, and musical events throughout the region. Carnegie Mellon University will host the anchoring exhibit, which opens Saturday, Oct. 7, at the university’s Posner Center. During this afternoon’s 20-minute program, also on Carnegie Mellon’s campus, guests will hear inspirational messages and enjoy a musical performance featuring one of the coveted Violins of Hope, once played by a Jewish musician during the Holocaust. CMU Director of Music Entrepreneurship Monique Mead, on violin, and Tino Cardenes, on piano, will serenade guests with jazz melodies from the ‘30s and ‘40s, considered “degenerate” by Hitler and the Nazi regime.

Guests of honor include the founder of Violins of Hope, Avshi Weinstein, a third-generation master violin maker; the new German Ambassador to the United States Andreas Michaelis; Carnegie Mellon President Farnam Jahanian; PA Secretary of the Department of Community and Economic Development Rick Siger; and Pittsburgh Deputy Mayor and Director Jake Pawlack. Thanks to more than 50 partners and the generosity of Presenting Sponsor, The Arthur J. and Betty F. The schematics function as puzzle pieces, allowing me to play with formal elements that reference the complexity, layering, confusion, and intricacies of human memory. 113 x 113 To celebrate our 113th anniversary, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh presents 113 x 113, a juried exhibition and online store featuring artwork priced at $113. From each sale, 70% goes back to the artist. Last year, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh sold over 130 works of art, and over $10,000 in commissions went to Pittsburgh-area artists. This year, Associated Artists hopes to build upon that success. For this year’s iteration, the 113 x 113 will consist of two releases: Friday, November 10 and Thursday, December 7, 2023. u

Quality Life Services 13th annual Mr. & Ms. Quality Life Pageant held on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Cranberry, PA. KDKA-TV’s Bob Pompeani was the emcee of the event and a panel of special guests and local celebrities will occupy the judges’ panel. The event is attend by residents, families, employees and sponsors. Quality Life Services (QLS) encourages their residents to live life to the fullest. Luke Stettner’s exhibit ‘State of the Sky’ debuts at Mattress Factory Mattress Factory announces the opening of a dynamic and evolving two-year exhibition, State of the Sky, by artist Luke Stettner which features more than 10 creative collaborators. Stettner’s new work deploys a range of mediums and processes across photography, sculpture, and poetry. Drawing inspiration from the changing conditions of the sky in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area, and by embracing the intrinsic value of collaboration, Stettner explores the complicated impact of industry on the environment and community health. u

Alaska Thunderf**k 5000’s Holiday Tour “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like ALASKA … A Christmas Show” Launches this fall with a brand new live show extravaganza. Alaska is set to perform in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, December 12 with a show at Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall. u

outhful energy and excitement filled the Carnegie Museums on the evening of June 18th, 2023 where 16 young women were presented as debutantes at the 97th Cinderella Ball. Coinciding with Father’s Day, this year’s celebration chaired by Mary Dauer Colville, Margaret Dauer Marquette, and Sarah Deutsch Scaife was a special gathering for the families of the debutantes who filled the venue with close to 400 guests. This fairy tale evening was a year in the making for the young ladies who completed the Leadership Forum for Young Women program which entailed volunteer service of at least 30 hours per individual to the primary beneficiary, The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, as well as service to additional non-profits, and attendance at networking and professional development events. Combined over 465 hours were logged at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium where the girls assisted the education department with animal presentations, helped with seasonal special events like the Asian Lantern Festival and ZooBoo, and assisted with marketing efforts for the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium’s 125th Anniversary. Debutante Enysah Ann Roberts, a recent graduate of The Ellis School, was awarded a scholarship by the Cinderella Women’s Committee for her dedicated to voluntarism after completing the most hours in the group.

Guests were seated lining the palatial Hall of Sculpture for the formal presentation of the debutantes. Young gentlemen serving as the Floor Committee lined the room on bent knee for the formal presentation of the debutantes. Each debutante, escorted by her father or presenter, was individually announced to a roomful of applause by enthusiastic guests. Always a special moment, Prince Charming 2023 was revealed to be Bobby O’Brien, a Shady Side Academy graduate and rising sophomore at Southern Methodist University. From a silver bowl, he blindly chose the name card of his Cinderella, Miss Audrey Pearl Badeer, who was thrilled by the news. The couple joined for a waltz at the center of the room followed by the Father Daughter Waltz by the entire group. After a promenade up and down the length of the room for all to see, the debutantes and their presenters led guests to cocktail hour in the Scaife Foyer at the Carnegie Museum of Art.

Guests were awestruck by the beautiful site of the Carnegie Music Hall Foyer where tables were set for dinner adorned by towering white hydrangea and rose arrangements by Jeff Donati of Pete Donati & Sons. The Rick Purcell Big Band filled the room with upbeat classical selections during the meal. Dinner included an heirloom tomato salad and roasted chicken breast with prosciutto, fontina and sage, asparagus, and an herbed risotto followed by a jeweled desert display with assorted fruit tarts, macarons, double fudge brownies, and other treats prepared by Mark Balach of Culinaire. The John Parker Band kept the black-tie clad crowd on the dance floor until the very last song of the evening.

One of the oldest continuously-running debutante balls in America, the Leadership Forum for Young Women and Cinderella Ball welcome Pittsburgh area high school seniors yearly to participate. Today’s modern debutantes are active, accomplished young women who are passionate about giving back to their communities and building leadership skills that will position them for future success. Each year, the event benefits a local non-profit through hands-on volunteer work and a monetary donation from the proceeds of Cinderella Ball. he Jewish Fertility Foundation’s Pittsburgh location, known as “JFF-PGH”, is gearing up for a busy few months! The Jewish Fertility Foundation (JFF) is a non-profit organization that provides free emotional support and educational programming for anyone in the Pittsburgh area, regardless of religion, race, gender identity, etc. JFF also provides financial assistance to eligible applicants in the form of grants to help pay for costly fertility treatments often not covered by insurance. Among the plethora of programming in the works are both the regularly scheduled monthly support groups, which are run by a local, licensed therapist, take place on zoom, and are free to attend, and special in person events like a ‘wellness’ event. In addition to emotional support for people currently experiencing infertility, JFF-PGH and its dedicated manager, Meredith Levy, will also be holding a clergy training this spring, to help local rabbis better understand what their congregants might be facing and how best to support them and be sensitive to their needs (as well as what not to do or say). Levy spends much of her time planning, coordinating, and executing events such as these, but also has the pleasure of working directly with clients struggling to build their families. For example, if someone requests a ‘fertility buddy’, Meredith works to match that person with a trained volunteer, who is a veteran of infertility, who may have had a similar diagnosis or fertility journey, and who can serve as a supportive listening ear.

JFF-PGH and Meredith Levy also look forward to developing new partnerships in the Pittsburgh area with other agencies and fertility clinics. Meredith maintains contact with fertility specialists to continue to provide support that current and future clients need. Levy will continue to work tirelessly to help facilitate the fulfillment of the Jewish Fertility Foundation’s mission: to engage hopeful parents by providing financial assistance, emotional support, and infertility education to those struggling to build their families. colution Gala is a one-of-a-kind sustainable couture event, the Annual Ecolution Fashion Gala produced by The Green Voice Collective and was held at the Carnegie Museum in June 2023.

This breathtaking eco-fashion show and sustainability gala featured models from Docherty Model and Talent Agency who graced the runway, donning hand-crafted fashion designs that local artists designed and created utilizing reused and recycled materials. The eco-Runway show was curated by Richard Parsakian and Style by Izzazu Salon, Spa & Blowout Bar. Music by DJ Soy Sos and a special dance performance by Donovan Reed and choreographed exclusively by American dance icon, Kyle Abraham. “Ecolution invites designers and artists to create couture fashion through the use of sustainable, recyclable, and organic materials” says Ecolution co-Founder Ronda Zegarelli These stellar environmentally savvy ensembles address the environmental issues facing our planet. What have I been eating?

Devout Vegetarian for over 25 years, my diet consists of primarily tofu, smoothies, avocados, veggie burgers and veggie sushi. What have you been listening to?

Listening to French Music, Latin Music and the Blues from all eras. I’m a huge fan of Susan Tedeschi and Chris Stapleton and looking forward to going to a lot of shows this summer.. Government Mule, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton and hopefully Madonna. What do you do to stay healthy?

I maintain a healthy lifestyle by dancing Zumba, Spinning, and just joined the new gym UFC Downtown to start weight training. I also find healthy distractions so I’m currently on my 500th day of learning French on Duolingo with the goal of getting back to Europe in 2024. What is you passion?

My work is my daily force and I enjoy the path that my career has taken especially in the past 5 years. My greatest passion is producing events. I’m so fortunate that I have the opportunity to produce a series of Earth Day Events that Gary Kalinosky, my Creative Director and Business Partner and I have concepted and produced We also produce events with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and are excited about our upcoming event in October. We’ve also provided exciting project work with the August Wilson Center Taste of Jazz, Pittsburgh Fashion Week and The Hispanic Chamber, Dias de los Muertos. I love the diversity in the arts and combining music, fashion, dance and art in event production. There is so much talent in this city that it is always a proud moment to collaborate with some of the best artists and creatives in the city. What is your greatest goal??

My greatest goal and mission is to continue to expand our Green Voice Platform which now reaches approximately 25,000 subscribers and enthusiasts. I concepted The Green Voice right before COVID and the Green Voice Monthly e-newsletter and it has become a great resource for Sustainable Lifestyle and Business News. Our editorial team is awesome with contributing writers such as Andrea Stehle, Natalie Bencivenga, Doug Oster, Dan Gigler and more. We are the hub for great sustainable content and our Green Voice Podcasts are hosted by the incredible Grant Ervin. Our Green Voice Speaker Series Panel Events’ relevance has been extremely well received so we have more Green Voice Events on deck for 2024.

orking at an 84 Lumber store may not be the typical route to working in construction, but 84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier, is anything but typical.

“It’s no secret that the construction industry is facing a severe shortage of skilled workers. What’s less known is that the way into construction may not always be with a builder or contractor,” said Ken Kucera, vice president of installed sales and manufacturing, 84 Lumber. Primarily known as an industry leader in building supplies and services for single- and multi-family residences and commercial buildings, 84 Lumber also operates component plants, door shops, installation centers, and wood product shops. It offers kitchen and bath design services. The stores themselves carry a variety of building materials including siding, decking, windows, trim, roofing, and trusses. It’s where builders and industry pros not only get supplies, but also the help they need to solve the challenge of securing skilled, reliable teams to complete installation. “Over the last decade, construction jobs have steadily increased, even during economic downturns,” said Kucera, who leads 84 Lumber’s strategy and implementation for growing the components manufacturing business across the country. “According to the National Center for Construction Education, 40 percent of the current construction workforce will retire by 2031, so the need for skilled workers is showing no signs of slowing. What’s really key for the next generation are the opportunities – a career in construction doesn’t have to be limited to a job site… the task of building America requires workers with many different types of skill sets and career goals.”

Chris Cox’s journey into the construction industry began in 2003 when he transferred from Coastal Carolina University to study Construction Management at Horry Georgetown Tech in Conway, South Carolina. He started as an intern at Centex Homes and quickly progressed to become a field superintendent. In 2008, after Pulte Homes acquired Centex Homes, Cox continued his career as a superintendent, this time in Charlotte, North Carolina. Following his years of industry experience, Cox moved to 84 Lumber in 2012. Over the past 11 years, Cox has received three promotions, establishing a rewarding career with 84 Lumber. Brandon McGavitt, on the other hand, took a different path into the construction industry. With a degree in management information systems from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he initially worked in IT at 84 Lumber for about two years. However, his passion for construction led him to seize a job opportunity as a repairs and enhancements coordinator in the real estate and development department in March 2022. McGavitt appreciates the dynamic nature of the construction field, the fast-paced environment, and the camaraderie with like-minded individuals who share the same blue-collar work ethic. The Construction Industry is “Never Dull” Both Cox and McGavitt share a love for the constant change and fast-paced nature of the construction industry. They appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with dedicated teams and to see the tangible impact of their efforts. “Every day is something new. The construction industry changes almost daily,” said Cox. “It’s the change that motivates you daily, and the best part is, you can be part of the change, too.” “There literally isn’t a dull moment, and we change gears on a dime. Priorities shift and plans change, and we just adjust to it,” said McGavitt. “It’s hard work, no doubt, but it is rewarding. At the end of the day, you can leave knowing you accomplished something. Honestly, it’s not for everyone and that’s okay. But if you aren’t scared of hard work and have the drive to make something of yourself, this company will reward you for that.” The construction industry, with its hands-on experience and visible results, offers a unique form of job satisfaction. Brandon McGavitt McGavitt echoes this sentiment, describing the moment he knew that this would be his lifelong career with a store manager telling him he could be someone in this company. “He wrote an email to several of my bosses at the time and just told them that I could be/do something great at this company, and I’ve never forgotten that.” For those interested in a career in construction, Cox offers valuable advice: “Be humble, let your hard work and work ethic do the ladder climbing. Learn to listen; and what I mean by that is really engage a mentor early on. Learn the tasks of others that support your position. In other words, have humility. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Make mistakes but learn from them. Lastly, never take your work home. s we enter this time of year, many individuals begin to review their personal finances and focus on making charitable contributions to the non-profit organizations that are near and dear to their hearts. Many donors simply look to their checkbooks and strike a check to the organizations that they support. This is a generous act and very much appreciated by the non-profit sector. However, many individuals are unaware that they can donate highly appreciated stock holdings to these organizations and receive a tax benefit. I will highlight four reasons where stock donations may be better than cash donations for non-profit organizations and donors.

1. Like cash, donating stock to charity is tax deductible. This deduction remains a powerful way for those with the means to do so to make an impact with organizations that they are passionate about and assist in possibly reducing their annual tax obligation. This deduction is the same whether the donation is made in cash or stock. While most donors plan to make donations as they are passionate about the causes that they hold close to their heart, receiving a tax benefit will certainly enhance the donors own personal finances. An important point to mention here is that the donor must itemize on their tax return to receive the benefit. For tax year 2022, you must have tax deductions over $12,950, $25,900 if married filing jointly and $19,400 if filing as head of household. You may deduct up to 30% of adjusted gross income. Parametric Assumes all realized gains are subject to the maximum federal long-term capital gains tax rate of 20% plus the 3.8% Medicare surtax, for a total rate of 23.8%. Does not take into account state and local sales tax, if any apply.

Finances — 2. Donating stock takes tax liability out of the portfolio. Donating highly appreciated stock to a charity removes tax liability and enables the investor to make their desired donation. The donor may deduct the donation from their adjusted gross income (AGI) and never have to worry about the capital gains tax they may otherwise have had to pay if they’d sold the stock. Many donors who make cash donations choose to sell investments and realize adverse tax consequences as a result of the sale. Depending on the length of time and price appreciation of the security, the donor may have significant embedded unrealized gains. In-kind charitable donations help the donor better control their tax situation while achieving their philanthropic goals. The inkind donation may remove the gain from the donor’s portfolio as opposed to the donor selling the security.

3. Better uses for cash. Donating stock from a portfolio, then depositing cash into the same portfolio in an amount equal to the value of the stocks gifted, can set the investor up for future tax-saving opportunities. The investor can invest the cash into the specific

sector to maintain the appropriate exposure while resetting their cost basis. This may allow for future tax-loss harvesting where the investor may be able to reduce future tax payments. The cash replenishment technique provides the opportunity to reinvest as well as diversify back into the asset class. This will help keep the donor allocated across the assets they are comfortable owning and may help diminish portfolio risk if they maintain a diversified portfolio.

4. Donating stock may increase the size of the gift. Stock donations tend to be larger than cash donations. When a donor sells stocks to provide a cash donation, this creates a taxable event for the donor. There is large likelihood that the donor will hold back a portion of the cash from the sale of stocks to cover their anticipated tax obligation. However, when you donate stock to a charity, you get the added benefit of receiving a tax deduction for the stock’s full fair-market value. This means that organizations may have a better opportunity to receive more from the donor with stock than cash gifting.

If the donor sells the stocks in this example, they realize $4,760 in long term capital gains. However, if the donor decided to provide the $50,000 charitable donation in kind, there may not be any long-term capital gains realized. How I started Warm Timber Saunas Prior to founding Warm Timber Saunas I was the Branch Manager of a large, national brokerage firm in downtown Pittsburgh, and later created a private firm with my son. As I neared retirement I decided to pursue my Sauna passion. I have been a Sauna enthusiast from back in my college days at Carnegie Mellon. It was then that I discovered the therapeutic benefits of Sauna, especially the enhanced recovery times and muscle relaxation that I enjoyed after bruising games on the football field. These early experiences led to a life-long love of Sauna. Over the years I was surprised and saddened to find out how few people in Pittsburgh knew about or loved Sauna like me. So I resolved to build saunas for as many people as I could, and to educate them on the history and the many health benefits of regular sauna use. Ten years later I am astonished and grateful for how many people have allowed us to create beautiful saunas in their homes. What are you eating? After trying many dietary approaches throughout my life I have returned to the wisdom of my late CMU English Professor, Fred Sochatoff who always advised “ moderation in all things.” A typical breakfast might include some bran cereal with sesame seeds and flax seeds, low-fat yogurt and carrot juice with ginger and tumeric. Lunch is usually during a sauna build, so it’s a quick PBJ on wheat bread with extra peanuts and raisins (yum!). Dinner is whatever my wife serves but usually includes grapes or cherries, chicken or pasta, vegetables/ salads. If I need a smile, some ice cream is called for. And did I mention a weakness for Pizza? What am I listening to? My listening is a potpourri of artists that include, Sade, Marvin Gaye, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Righteous Brothers, Kari Jobe and many more. But my “go to” is any song by James Taylor. During our outdoor Sharpsburg Sauna Saturday sessions I play a mix of favorites on my Bluetooth speaker placed just outside the mobile sauna. Our regular mobile sauna friends often say how much they enjoy the music during their riverside shvitz (sweat!)

What do I do to maintain a healthy lifestyle? It probably is no surprise that I combine a mixture of exercise and sauna usage, which has helped me maintain my college weight fifty years later. Studies have demonstrated that sitting in a sauna for 20 minutes provides the same cardiovascular benefit as pedaling at a moderate pace on an exercise bike for 20 minutes. (Guess which I’d rather do?) Other long term studies have shown that regular sauna users have fewer strokes, fewer cardiac arrests, reduced likelihood of dementia, and greater lifespans, to name just a few benefits. For me the perfect week includes 3 – 5 sauna sessions at 180 to 200 degrees, some weight training and relaxing with my wife, family and friends, whenever I am not building another sauna! Being headquartered in Aspinwall, we have the benefit of being close to so many organic, locally sourced offerings that accommodate a range of dietary preferences. We often dine out at local favorite restaurants, like Cornerstone Bistro, or find ourselves trying out new recipes. When we are busy working at the office, our go to fuel includes fruit, hummus, iced tea and lots of matcha lattes. Retreat attendees and presenters gather for a photo with GHR founder Erica McIlroy.

What are you listening to?

At the office and events, we mostly play relaxing, ambient music or feature live singing bowls, harp, gongs, drumming and even acoustic guitar. Off duty, you can find Erica singing along to the Grateful Dead and Susan listening to true crime podcasts to unwind. How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Health is, of course, a huge and important aspect of our lives. There are so many activities we implement and we are always searching for new ways to open our hearts and minds while improving our physical health. Some of our favorites include acupuncture, meditation, yoga, forest bathing or even just spending time with our friends, families and pets! One specific and fundamental influence behind the GHR lifestyle is QiGong, a balancing, centering and grounding energy practice that is known to improve both mental and physical health. We offer instruction in QiGong for all levels at our Aspinwall office location, and it has played a central role in our retreats and programming. u

errie Shapiro lives in the charming village of Montecito, south of Santa Barbara, CA. Her contemporary house has sweeping views of the San Ysidro Mountains and is also home to her two Cane Corso dogs, Daniel and Henry. But as the daughter of one of the three brothers who founded National Record Mart, her hometown will always be Pittsburgh.

Artist Profile —

National Record Mart started in 1938 with a store that sold used juke box records, and became the largest privatelyowned record store in five states. NRM became the basis for several generations of music lovers, with people of all ages flipping through bins of stacked LPs. Folks who met there fell in love, started bands, and became fans. Gerrie has the daunting job as the manager of the ticketing agency that extended through all of the stores, with her mother as her assistant. Gerrie is especially proud of her family’s entrepreneurial accomplishments and maintained a close relationship with her parents throughout their lives. As they aged into their late 80s, she moved them into her contemporary home, complete with large gardens for her mother and father to enjoy. An accomplished artist in many mediums, from haute couture to painting to interactive sculpture, Gerrie’s studio is filled with paintings, clothing racks, and sculptures. A lifelong self-starter, Gerrie now runs a dog-training business and sitting service that caters to local celebrities and specializes in giant working breeds. On most mornings, she rises early to work out in her home gym. A former powerlifter, she knows the drill and value of a consistent routine. She then takes her two “kids”, Daniel and Henry, up and down Montecito Village’s Coast Village Road, before beginning her day.

What are your fondest memories of Pittsburgh? I have many. I worked at the cash register in the Oldies department of National Record Mart when I was twelve. I took all my art classes on Friday night at Carnegie Museum when you could take the streetcar. I was the only kid. All adults and me. What was it like growing up in the National Record Mart family? I was lucky, I almost had three fathers. Howard, Sam, and my Dad, Jason, were like three fathers. My Dad was the kindest, sweetest man. His word was his bond. He went into business with people who had the expertise, but not the money. He would take the business to the next level, and then he would let them buy him out. He loved doing stuff like that. He treated his employees like family. What brought you to your art? Since I was a small child. I was the one in the room drawing, gluing things together, ever since I can remember. I can’t remember not being an artist. Your work in many different mediums. Explain that. I went to The Rhode Island School of Design and I wrote my essay on Pablo Picasso, who I liked because he worked in so many mediums. Professionally, it almost worked against me because I am in so many areas, from sewing, to drawing to sculptures. Picasso made me feel like I wasn’t odd to think that I wanted to do it all. And so, I do. I made a straight jacket that won an award at Carnegie Museums. I love making art to wear. What do you use consistently in your art? I studied art in San Miguel at Allende, Mexico, and I use a lot of color in my work. I also do a lot of detail work so people can really look at it. I like to do drawings that are personalized. I do commissions for weddings and make those personal for them. You recently did a piece for the Breast Cancer Resource center. What is the significance of it? I did a drawing for them because it was their 25th gala and it was my 15th anniversary of breast cancer remission, so I wanted to do something special for them. I also just did a piece for the Friendship Center for Alzheimer’s because they were so good to my Dad and to me when he had Alzheimer’s. I did a piece that hangs in the executive director’s office. Describe your passion for dogs. I am a professional dog trainer to Montecito’s famous residents and I specialize in large, working-breed dogs. I have two huge Cane Corso dogs that each weight 150 pounds. I walk them through the village and no one can believe that I can control them. It is great example of how I can train large dogs, and this is big dog town.

What do you to maintain your healthy lifestyle? I always have gone to the gym. When I was 50, I was benchpressing in and someone said you could be a power-lifter because you can lift so much for your size. I was a good bencher. My best was 200 pounds. I met my boyfriend at the gym; he’s a powerlifter too. I felt so powerful and could not believe I could do that! But the breast cancer ended that. Today, I have a gym in my house and work out every day, and walk my beautiful dogs, Daniel and Henry. My job keeps me active. I powerwalk while I am training. I am the therapy dog evaluator for Santa Barbara County. Currently, Daniel works at the Friendship Adult Day Center in Montecito taking care of everyone, playing basketball and giving the people their love and kisses. My spiritual health is tied in with my physical health, so I am actively involved with the Chabad in Santa Barbara and Montecito. My Dad was involved with the Chabad in Pittsburgh, so when I moved my parents from Pittsburgh to live with me, their house on Beeler Street became the Chabad of Carnegie Mellon University. What music are you listening to? I listen to music all day long because of my NRM background. I listen to showtunes Harry Connick, Jr., Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Luciano Pavarotti. It’s all a mixture and it shuffles. And the best part of it? I have all these audios of my Dad talking to me, and they’re interspersed! He was in the 90s, and not really verbal, but I can him saying “I love you!” and “Off”, and I can hear our feet shuffling when we danced together every night. I play it loud in my gym at 6am! What are you eating? I am a lifetime vegetarian. I eat anything that’s green. All vegetables. I mix in collagen and protein. It’s easy now because everyone understands vegetarianism. It was not so easy when I was growing up.

The ceremony was held at the Royal Poinciana Chapel, a Palm Beach church that the Rath family has attended for 4 generations. The officiant, Dr. Robert Norris, who briefly lived in Pittsburgh himself, surprised the bride and groom with a special final blessing of their marriage: a Terrible Towel he wrapped around their joined hands at the altar. Guests headed just across the island for the reception in the Circle Ballroom at The Breakers. The property, built in 1926, inspired the décor for the evening with art deco patterns covering the tabletops. Breathtaking floral arrangements, reminiscent of the Gilded Age soirées held at The Breakers, adorned the center of each table. An indulgent selection of hors d’oeuvres kicked off the evening with a favorite being the Osetra caviar bite on a potato blini served with a chilled shot of vodka. Guests were energized by the sounds of the Fusion by RockWithU, hitting the dance floor between each course of dinner. At the request of the father of the bride, a late-night snack of scrambled eggs topped with caviar was served in martini glasses as the crowd packed the dance floor for a partyclosing rendition of “Don’t Stop Believing”. u

PPC wins the 40th Anniversary Family House Polo Match on September 9 at Hartwood Acres. Local Entrepreneur, D. Raja, obtained the US Polo Franchise, Pittsburgh Polo Club (PPC), three years ago after construction a state-of-the-art Polo arena at a 325-acre property that is approximately 25 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. PPC offers an outdoor arena program for beginners through professional polo players. This state-of-the-art arena has a superior soft footing for polo horses. Monthly matches versus region and local Polo teams are played from April through October. World-class Polo champion, Felipe Villamil, joined the club at Manager in 2021. Having an extensive polo career, Felipe Villamil started traveling abroad in 2002 landing him in Palm Beach playing for Lechuzas Caracas, one of the best Polo organizations in the country. He then spent 7 years as professional Polo player in Barbados, Venezuela and Paraguay playing in multiple tournaments around the globe. Having a 3t handicap in the USA, Felipe then came back to the US in 2011, 2012 and 2013 playing again in Palm Beach. Starting in 2016 Felipe worked for 5 years as the manager of Altair polo

for the Van Meter in Virginia. Felipe now is the Manager and Lead Instructor of Pittsburgh Polo Club. PPC has some of loving and gentle Argentinian Polo Horses ready for matches & lessons: Alabama, Frijolito, Azafata, Vivi, Esperanza, Cautiva, Rihana and Bachata. PPC has horses for the beginner and horses for professional polo players. Many of the horses have been trained from the time as a pony to play polo. They are “quiet” horses that are so responsive to the lead so that focus can just be on the game. Felipe has led the PPC team for the past two years at Family House Polo. Last year ended in a tied score. This year PPC won a hard-fought victory in front of an audience of 3000 guests against the Potomac Polo Club from Potomac, MD on September 9. The match was the centerpiece celebrating the 40th anniversary of the charity event benefitting Family House Pittsburgh. For 40 years, Family House Polo has been a beloved tradition that raises critical funds to provide a “home away from home” for thousands of families who travel to Pittsburgh for medical care annually. The Pittsburgh Polo Club played on behalf of Howard Hanna Real Estate, while the Potomac team represented #1 Cochran. PPC’s own Coy Gupta served as the announcer at the event, providing entertaining play by play commentary.
