Field Carrier Landing Practice Schedule at NAS Whidbey Island July 17-23 No Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) or aircraft carrier-based flight training operations for aircraft stationed at NAS Whidbey Island are scheduled to occur either at the Outlying Field (OLF) in Coupeville, WA, or at Ault Field the week of July 17-23, 2016.

FCLP and CCA schedules for OLF Coupeville and Ault Field will continue to be released weekly for community planning purposes. The Navy’s OLF at Coupeville is a critical national security asset that provides essential training for Navy pilots based at NAS Whidbey Island to conduct safe and effective aircraft carrier flight operations around the world.

A Search and Rescue (SAR) team from NAS Whidbey Island’s SAR unit medically evacuated (MEDEVAC) an 89-yearold woman from Clallam County Beach near Ozette on the western coast of Washington last night. The woman was reportedly suffering from exhaustion and hip leg pain that prevented her from being able to stand or walk. She was accompanied by her grandson who made the initial call for help.

Initially, the SAR unit was unable to get to the victim’s location along the northern coast due to low clouds and heavy rain near Neah Bay. The crew then flew to Sanderson Field in Shelton, Wash., where they refueled. After refueling they traveled along the southern edge of the Olympics and were able to fly the 110 nautical miles to the victim and her grandson’s location. After quickly locating the elderly woman and her grandson they hoisted them aboard the aircraft and flew them to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles.

The MEDEVAC from Clallam County Beach was the first of two last night. A second SAR crew left for an evacuation of an 84-year-old man from the Pasayten Wilderness in Okanagan County who was reportedly suffering from a loss of equilibrium.

The Navy SAR unit operates three MH-60S helicopters from NAS Whidbey Island as search and rescue platforms for the EA-18G aircraft as well as other squadrons and personnel assigned to the installation. The base also has an agreement to assist Washington State with medical evacuations and search and rescue activities.

Join with me now as we journey back in our Whidbey Weekly time machine to the tenure of Charles William Eliot, President of Harvard University from 1869 until 1909.

The story goes that President Eliot, cousin of the Nobel Prize winning poet T.S. Eliot, announced he wanted to drop baseball from the university's athletic program despite Harvard's winning baseball season.

"Well, this year I'm told the team did well because one pitcher had a fine curve ball. I understand that a curve ball is thrown with a deliberate attempt to deceive. Surely this is not an ability we should want to foster at Harvard."

Interesting also that Eliot thought the only “clean sports” were rowing and tennis. Eliot was also disgusted by football, trying unsuccessfully to abolish the game in 1905. That year, The New York Times reported that Eliot called football "a fight whose strategy and ethics are those of war," that violation of rules cannot be prevented, that "the weaker man is considered the legitimate prey of the stronger" and "no sport is wholesome in which ungenerous or mean acts which easily escape detection contribute to victory."

Overheard Last month, while returning a movie to DVD By the Sea's red box inside Texaco Short Stop in Freelandia, I overheard the following exchange between two guys in line, checking out with their evening six packs.

“Hey, how is it going, haven't seen you for some time?”

“Not bad. Keeping busy. You know, you're the only guy who ever fired me.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah, that was about fifteen years ago. I'm more responsible now. I got kids.”

“That'll do it.”

Which reminds me to recommend the recent film, Misconduct, with Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, and Josh Duhamel. It is not the kind of movie to watch while you are doing something else, unless you like rewinding more than unwinding. For me, this buck fifty rental was a superb mystery thriller with a plot line that will keep you guessing.

Forest Fest This Saturday, July 23, from 11 am until 5 pm, the music of the 1st Annual Forest Music Festival will be saturating the Douglas firs and serenading the cedars at South Whidbey State Park. Admission is free. Presented by Friends of South Whidbey State Park, this Saturday's event will feature Linda Good's Island Strings at 11, The Shifty Sailors at high noon, Whidbey Jazz Society at 1:15, Levi and James at 2:30, Cranberry Bog at 3:45, and an open guitar jam at 5 pm with Richard Hughes.

For thirty years, I have had the pleasure of emceeing fairs and festivals all over the northwest. Our outstanding line-up of talent for the Forest Music Festival features many of the most popular and family pleasurable local entertainers. Educational displays and fun activities for all ages will be part of the day, along with hot dogs, beverages, fruit, and other snacks at a nominal charge.

Thanks to John Leaser and the Friends of South Whidbey State Park, we all have another excellent choice of how to spend this Saturday with friends and family outdoors. Stop and say hello as we enjoy another few hours of toe tapping, dancing, and, more than likely, selfies and texting, together.

After some good conversation, as well as a hearty rendering of oatmeal with blueberries, Ernie tried to return to his room but appeared to be struggling again with the first step on the staircase. Apparently, the residents' elevator was out of order. Given her additional concerns, neighbor Lucile got into a frenzy, disregarding Ernie's assurances, and called the ambulance.

Two hours passed before Lucile's curiosity kicked in enough for her to call the hospital for an update on her friend.

“Hello, this is Lucile Strahan. My friend Ernie Marshall was brought in earlier today with a mobility issue. May I ask how he is doing? I am not a relative, but a long time friend. Ernie and I used to lawn bowl together.”

“No problem, ma'am. Ernie is doing just fine.

In his haste to get dressed, Mr. Marshall had both of his legs in one leg of his boxer shorts.”

Pet Peeves A fellow walked into a pet store and was looking at the animals on display. While he was there, a Chief Master Sergeant from the local Air Force Base walked in and said to the shopkeeper, "I'd like a line-service monkey, please."

The clerk nodded, went to a cage at the side of the store and took out a monkey. He put a collar and leash on the animal and handed it to the Chief, "That'll be $1,000." The Chief paid and left with the monkey.

Surprised, the fellow went to the shopkeeper and said, "That was a very expensive monkey.

Most of them here are only a few hundred dollars. Why did that one cost so much?"

The shopkeeper answered, "Ah, that was a line-service monkey. He can park, fuel, and service all Air Force aircraft, conduct all required ground ops testing, rig aircraft flight controls, and all, with zero mistakes. He's well worth the money."

With his interest peaked, the fellow looked around and spotted a monkey in another cage with a $10,000 price tag.

"That one's really expensive! What can it do?"

"Oh, that one is a maintenance supervisor monkey. He can instruct at all levels of aircraft maintenance, supervise all corrective and preventive maintenance programs, supervise a crew of maintainers, and even do most of the paperwork. A very useful monkey indeed," replied the shopkeeper.

The guy looked around a little more and found another monkey in a cage at the back of the store. The price tag read, $50,000.

"Holy cow! What does this one do?"

"Well”, the shopkeeper said, “I've never actually seen him do anything but drink beer, and flirt with the girl monkeys, but his papers say he's a pilot."

Easy now, it's just a joke about the Air Force.

Pokémon Among the Stacks: Libraries Welcome Players

On July 11, a group of 20-somethings walked into the Stanwood Library and stood in a circle.

With heads down, they stared intently at their phones.

Unsure, library staffer Melissa Borders approached the all-male group and asked: “Are you playing Pokémon GO?” It’s a scene playing out more and more since the mobile online game launched in the U.S. on July 6 and one that is especially common in places such as libraries.

“We love it,” said Sno-Isle Libraries Executive Director Jonalyn Woolf-Ivory. “We are all about supporting our communities and Pokémon GO has quickly become something our customers are embracing.”

Libraries and other public places figure prominently in the world of Pokémon GO. Players go in search of Pokémon figures, which they capture and then train at Pokémon GO Gyms.

Along the way, they may need supplies, which are available at PokéStops.

Libraries can be any or all of those things and Sno-Isle Libraries welcomes players on their quests.

“We’re putting up signs that say ‘Welcome Pokémon Trainers,” said Dawn Rutherford, Teen Services Coordinator for the library district. If there is one caveat, it is a request to respect other library users while capturing Pokémon, training or resupplying.

So far, that doesn’t seem to be a problem.

“Pokémon GO players can be very focused on the game,” Rutherford said. “We are also hearing stories of people making it out of the house more and families walking around playing the game together. We are thrilled to be a place Pokémon trainers can safely connect and discover!”

Rutherford added that it appears that most if not all Sno-Isle Libraries facilities are identified in some way in Pokémon GO: “Some of our libraries are Gyms, many are PokéStops and I’m pretty sure all have Pokémon waiting to be caught.”

The amphitheater is a wonderfully unique venue, nestled among the trees of the old growth forest, and overlooking Puget Sound.

The State Park itself is a real treasure, with 437 acres of old growth forest, several hiking trails and picnic areas.

Admission is free, with donations to Friends of South Whidbey State Park encouraged.

Lunch will be available for a nominal price.

Parking is limited, so carpooling is highly encouraged; a Discover Pass is required.

Whidbey Island Triathlon Celebrates 20Th Year Seeks 100+ Volunteers South Whidbey Parks and Recreation (SWPR) proudly announces the 20th Annual Whidbey Island Triathlon set for Saturday, July 30.

SWPR is seeking volunteers in all areas, from trail marshals to clean-up crew. Over the course of 2 days they will need to fill over 100 volunteer positions. Approximately 300 athletes will be looking to volunteers for encouragement, assistance and support.

Volunteers are the HEART of this event, and it couldn’t be held without them. Join SWPR for a fun and rewarding experience. Please encourage your friends, family or club to volunteer with you.

The spectacular course that sets the stage for the annual Whidbey Island Triathlon endurance event starts off with a half mile swim in Goss Lake on beautiful Whidbey Island, followed by a 19.5 mile bike course along the scenic island roads offering views of Saratoga Passage and

The Oak Harbor PBY Naval Air Museum, in conjunction with other regional museums, is assembling a collection of “other than survivor” December 7, 1941 stories to help commemorate the 75th anniversary of the attack. This would include children, young adults and other civilians who remember the incident.

The event has been organized by the all-volunteer Friends of South Whidbey State Park that provides necessary services to the park and puts on interpretive programs free to the public.

Orca Network’s commemoration of the Penn Cove orca captures of 1970 includes an on the water ceremony as well as a special screening of the documentary Lolita: Spirit in the Water with guest appearances by the creators of the film.

46 years ago over 100 Southern Resident orcas were herded into Penn Cove off Whidbey Island, WA. Seven of the young whales were netted and delivered to marine parks around the world. All but one had died by 1987. Originally named Tokitae, they now call her Lolita.

In memory of the nearly 40 Southern Resident orcas captured in Washington State, and the 13 orcas killed during the captures, and in honor of Tokitae, the sole survivor, Orca Network is sponsoring two events on Saturday, August 6 to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the 1970 Penn Cove Orca Capture.

From 11:00am to 2:30pm an event is planned at the Coupeville Wharf including educational displays and a waterside ceremony. A limited number of tickets for a ceremonial boat trip in Penn Cove will be available. At noon, boaters are encouraged to join the ceremony on Penn Cove in a kayak, row boat, or any kind of vessel, for a ceremonial paddle/sail/motor around the perimeter of the capture site.

Kayaks and small boats can be launched from Capt. Coupe Park in Coupeville, Monroe’s Landing, or the DNR access on Madrona Way (note: parking permits are required for the use of DNR parking/beach access areas). The procession will travel to the capture site in Penn Cove for a wreath ceremony to remember the orcas killed in the capture, and those who have died in captivity. Orca Network will provide flowers and cedar sprigs to toss into the water, or you may bring your own flower or other eco-friendly offering to toss in the water during the ceremony. In addition to the on-the-water events, there will be a blessing and salmon offering from Rosie Cayou and Bill Bailey of the Samish Nation, music, and a reading by Sandra Pollard from her book Puget Sound Whales for Sale. The event on the Wharf is free to the public, though contributions to support Orca Network’s educational programs and work on orca captivity issues are appreciated.

Janine’s husband, Bas (Bastiaan), is originally from Zeeland in The Netherlands, but has lived in Australia for 14 years. They lived in Utrecht for a year and travel back to The Netherlands as often as possible. Janine is from the Seattle area and has been coming up to, and living on the island off and on since she was 16 years old. They have been traveling and moving to different cities and countries for the past 11 years, but now call Whidbey Island their home, as they both have loved this place for years. As the new owners of A Touch Of Dutch they hope to carry on what Michele and Jack Kempees started 20 years ago and Misty Blanton has built out in the past decade.

Seton’s Wolf Hunt: Fact and Literary License Monday, July 25, 1:30pm-2:30pm Coupeville Library Ernest Thompson Seton, a budding naturalist and accomplished artist at the time, was invited to hunt wolves in northeastern New Mexico in the winter of 1893-1894.

On his return he wrote “Lobo, the King of Currumpaw,” which became his best known tale of adventures with “true” animals and was one of the first stories to launch the literary genre called the Realistic Animal Story.

Annual festival celebrates love of lavender and art

By Kathy Reed Whidbey Weekly Late July on Whidbey Island and the scent of lavender floats on the breeze, greeting all those who pass by the Lavender Wind Farm store on Coveland Street in Coupeville.

Inside the shop, owner Sarah Richards bustles about, busy talking with customers, giving direction to employees, tweaking displays and finally settling down to enjoy a small break before jumping up from her chair to tend to something else.

Life at the Coupeville shop is always busy, but this time of year is especially busy as Richards prepares for the 13th annual Lavender Wind Festival, a celebration of lavender and art at her farm, located at 2530 Darst Rd. in Coupeville.

This year’s festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 30 and 31.

Richards admits it’s a tremendous amount of work, but says it feeds her artistic nature.

“I finally realized my canvas is the farm,” said Richards, who was an art major in college. “So this is how I get my fix and give back to the arts community at the same time.”

About 17 local artisans will have their work on display at the festival and those attending are encouraged to stroll through their booths and wander through the lavender fields while enjoying views of the Strait of Juan De Fuca and the Olympic Mountains.

“There will be demonstrations on distilling and making lavender wands, plus there will be rock painting available for children,” said Richards.

There will also be live music each day from noon to 4:30 p.m. at the wine and beer tent, which this year will raise money for the Pacific Northwest Art School in Coupeville. Lavender Wind’s signature scones, cookies and lemonade will be available at the farm’s store and Milepost

Others can wander the lavender labyrinth, which is based on a Hopi Indian design.

“Grownups tend to walk the labyrinth and meditate,” Richards said. “Children tend to meditate with their whole bodies, so they run through it.”

A labyrinth is not to be confused with a maze, according to Lavender Wind’s website. Rather than being a puzzle to solve, the labyrinth is a circular design with a clear path to the center and another to the exit. The labyrinth at Lavender Wind Farm “gives the journey a sweet, fresh air.”

Richards purchased the original five-acre historic property, located in Ebey’s Landing National Historic Reserve, from the Darst family in 2000.

The land had been farmed for over 100 years, much of it used for potatoes. Richards began

planting lavender soon after and harvested her first crop in 2003. Lavender, it turns out, is well suited to the land.

“When I bought the property it didn’t come with irrigation rights,” she said. “I wanted to keep it operational and lavender is drought tolerant. Dry summers make it happier.”

Because of Whidbey’s location in the Olympic Rain Shadow, annual rainfall is about 18 inches and summers are typically windy and dry, conditions in which lavender thrives. This summer has been a little cooler and a bit wetter than normal, so Richards anticipates the farm’s overall yield will be down a bit this year. Last year Richards harvested five tons of lavender, producing 13,700 bundles. Uses for the fragrant, purple buds seem almost endless.

“The more I know about it, the more I like it. It’s endlessly useful,” said Richards.

And Richards takes lavender very seriously. She is a founding board member of the U.S. Lavender Growers Association, which provides a voice for lavender growers, helps support lavender farms, connects growers to buyers and provides education to both lavender growers and lavender users.

“Farming is such a challenge,” Richards said, “Trying to grow a business is challenging no matter what, but here I’ve gotten a lot of support from the community and a lot of support from other farmers.”

Because of weather this year, Richards hopes there will still be plenty of purple left in the fields for the festival, but that, of course, depends on Mother Nature. She said they have also planted lots of sunflowers that may be beginning to peek out around festival time. Either way, visitors

Scouting aims to make learning fun

Nearly 100 Cub Scouts from Oak Harbor, Coupeville, and Anacortes came together last week for five days of activities, learning and fun as they participated in the annual Twilight Camp in Oak Harbor.

Held at the Van Horn/McGarr recreation park behind the Veterans of Foreign Wars Whitehead-Muzzall Post 7392, young scouts in grades one through four moved through a series of activities from 5 to 9 p.m. each evening.

“The activities reflect the 12 points of the scout law,” said camp director Trenton Lay. “Each activity is designed to reinforce one of those points.”

The boys moved through stations like the human Foosball game, leather working, skit writing, woodworking, archery and marksmanship. The theme for this year’s camp was based on a CSI theme – Cub Scout Investigations.

“Each station they complete has a clue,” said program director Cynthia Allen. “By the end of the week they will be able to figure out which station leader stole the camp totem, Sherlock. The culprit gets a pie in the face.”

In addition to reinforcing scouting principles and solving mysteries, some of the activities help the boys satisfy a portion of the requirements for earning their rank.

“Building a bird house is one of the required activities needed to earn one of their achieve-

ments,” said Allen. “This way it gives them incentive when they get started in the fall and they’ve already completed part of what they need to earn their rank.”

“Twilight camp is a great opportunity for some of the different packs to come together and work on different skills and achievements,” said Lay. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Most popular among the activity stations are the marksmanship and archery courses.

“The shooting sports are a great activity that reinforces the principle of honesty,” Lay said.

“The target tells the truth.”

“Archery is my favorite,” said 10-year-old Matthew G. “The balloons are easy to pop.”

Archery and woodworking were at the top of the list for Owen J., also 10.

“I like to try to make the target,” he said.

“And I like woodworking because I like to build things and you get to be creative and use a hammer.”

Scouts also work on citizenship skills at the nightly flag ceremony, where they learn how to handle a flag properly and say the pledge of allegiance. Citizenship is an important part of scouting, say leaders.

“Scouting is one of the largest and oldest organizations around,” said Blake Jones, district executive for Island District, Mount Baker Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

“It teaches them self-reliance and character building.

“The program has been around a long time,” he continued. “But it’s not stuck in the past.

We have traditions, sure, but we’re always trying to stay current.”

As the saying goes, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Well, Whidbey Island youth are not only making lemonade, they’re selling it too, as participants in Whidbey Lemonade Day, to be held Aug. 20 at locations up and down the island.

The event, based on National Lemonade Day which is held elsewhere in May, is aimed at children ages 8 to 12, but any child can participate. The Island County Economic Development Council, and its foundation in Coupeville, is sponsoring the event on Whidbey Island, one of only about three or four other communities participating across Washington state.

The whole purpose is to give children realworld, hands-on business experience.

“The Economic Development Foundation is all about fostering the entrepreneurial spirit in our communities,” said Sami Postma, program director at ICEDC. “Lemonade Day teaches children how to set goals and build a plan to reach those goals.”

Postma is leading a series of free workshops for children interested in participating in Lemonade Day. Upcoming workshops will be held at 10 a.m. at Sno-Isle Public Libraries in Freeland July 21 and July 27, in Coupeville July 25 and in Oak Harbor July 29.

Children participating got to practice taking orders and making change and there was also a basic overview on safe food handling. The last task was allowing the kids to make a poster promoting their business.

“This really gives them good instructions on how to run a business,” said Tasha Roldan, who brought three of her children to the workshop.

“Plus, it encourages them to save some of their money.”

“This really helps parents keep their kids motivated,” said Vanessa Maldonado, who was there with her two children. “As a parent you

“I learned it’s more than just selling stuff,” agreed Josiah Maldonado, age 12. He has already captured the one spot available for a stand at Oak Harbor’s Wal-Mart store on Aug. 20. “And I also just want to have fun.”

Javier Roldan, age 12, already has experience running a lemonade stand, but wanted to pick up some tips to make his stand better this year.

“I wanted to learn how to get customers’ attention,” he said. “I want to donate some money so I learned how to do this as a business.”

“It’s a mixture of powdered sugar, butter, cream cheese, cocoa powder and vanilla that you put in a baggie,” explained Lynnette Humphries. “Since a couple of the ingredients are frozen, they put the baggie under their arms to help it thaw out faster so they can mix it.”

“All the hours have paid off,” she said. “I’m kind of on cloud nine right now.”

Several local businesses have joined in the Lemonade Day effort and will be allowing children to set up their stands in front of their locations. Postma hopes the children who participate will let her know where they plan to put their stands so she can post a map of where all the stands on the island will be.

“The kids are setting their own hours and making their own product,” said Postma. “It’s really their business, we’re just helping them do it.”

Richards estimates as many as 2,000 people will come through the farm during the festival.

Because there are so many places to wander, it never seems crowded, she said.

“It’s a peaceful time. And it’s one of the most stunning views on the island,” she said.

Lavender Wind Farm is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the growing season – from early to mid-June through late August. The Lavender Wind store in Coupeville is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Richards said she does it all for the love of lavender.

“Every June when I go to harvest the first crop, it’s just intoxicating. I love it,” she said. “Walking through the fields, carrying an armful of freshly cut lavender, there’s nothing better.”

Playhouse production is a beauty for all ages

By Kathy Reed Whidbey Weekly A tale as old as time has been given a fresh, new look with the Whidbey Playhouse’s production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” Performances of the youth musical begin Thursday, July 21 and run through the end of the month. The cast is made up of 44 talented actors ranging in age from kindergartners to high school students.

Thomas said the biggest challenge was working with such a large cast. While about a quarter of the actors have been part of the Playhouse’s Would-Be Players youth theater program, it was the first stage experience for many of the cast members.

“I love seeing the lights go on when they’re playing a role,” he said. “My teaching style, I talk to them like adults and I think they like that.”

Assistant director Eric George, fresh off his performance as Stew Pot in “South Pacific,” said working on this production has been one of the best experiences he’s had.

“It has been a great joy to do this and put it together,” said director Stan Thomas, who said the cast has been practicing four hours a day, four days a week for the past month on the production.

“It’s the first time for me in any kind of a directing role,” he said. “It’s been a really cool experience to get to watch Stan and learn from him. There’s been a big learning curve but I’m really proud of the show.”

While the cast may be young, Thomas and George both stress that people of all ages will enjoy the show. But just because the cast is young doesn’t mean the audience should lower its expectations.

“The kids want to do a good show,” said George.

“This is one of the best productions Whidbey Playhouse has done,” said Tatyana Moore, 17, who plays Belle. “It’s been an amazing experience.”

“They should really cut out the “junior” in the title,” agreed 16-year-old Kenyon Sirak, who plays Gaston. “We’ve all been working really hard and it really is an amazing production.”

course, if Belle was to fall in love with the Beast, she could break the spell and the Beast and all his servants would return to normal. But the handsome Gaston stirs up the townspeople and leads an attack against the castle and the fearsome Beast.

The production is complete with all the familiar Disney tunes and the cast handles the music well. The staging is inventive and it’s worth going to see the production to not only take a stroll down memory lane (for those parents who have heard or seen it a hundred times), but also to get a glimpse of one of the most terrifyingly adorable packs of wolves ever.

“I hardly had to look at the script because I knew all the words already,” admitted Moore. “But I love doing musicals. I feel like the songs move the story along and are another way to express emotion.”

“Gaston is so much fun to play,” said Sirak of his

character. “It’s such a silly role and I love getting to be such a ridiculous character.”

“It’s fun getting to play all the different stages of emotion the Beast goes through,” said 17-yearold Warren Rogers, who said getting all the dance steps down was the hardest part of playing the Beast.

“This is my first musical,” he said. “I quite like it.”

Life Tributes CECIL J. TALBOT Cecil J. Talbot, LCDR, USN (Ret) died July 12, 2016 at his home in Oak Harbor at the age of 87. He was born October 7, 1928 in Beaver, UT, as an only child, to Albert and Zoe Talbot. As a young man he lived in Death Valley Junction, CA, Goldfield, Goldpoint, and Tonopah, NV, Portland and Oregon City, OR. Cecil graduated from Oregon City High School in 1947. As a teenager, he served as a Master Councilor DeMolay, Clothing Salesman at S&N Men’s Store, Supply Sergeant in the Oregon National Guard, lettered in high school wrestling, won second place in the high school "Best Looking Letterman" contest and finished a year of Junior College classes.

Cecil enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1948 as a Seaman Recruit. He quickly rose through the enlisted ranks as a Storekeeper and in 1959, achieved the rank of Warrant Officer. January 5, 1952, he was married and sealed to Helen Clyde in the Hawaiian Temple.

Cecil was eventually commissioned as an officer and was in charge of the Commissary at NAS Whidbey. His military career included duties as a warehouseman, office administrator at both shore installations and on-board ships; Commissary Officer (General Mess); Stores Officer; Disbursing Officer; Officer-in-Charge of Commissary Stores; Officer’s Mess Manager; Audit Team; Councilor and Prosecutor for Navy Legal Departments. Besides his sea duty, Cecil was stationed in Pearl Harbor, HI, San Diego, CA, Garden

Cecil retired July 1, 1972 as a LCDR with more than 24 years of military service.

Following retirement, Cecil was hired as Assistant Store Manager for Zody’s Department Store. He moved on to serve as Administrative Services Manager for Anaheim Savings & Loan, Anaheim, CA before returning to Oak Harbor.

Cecil was very much involved with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as a Life Time Member. He served as Home Teacher, Servicemen’s Group Leader, member of the San Diego Stake Seventies Presidency, Stake High Councilman, Stake Sunday School President, member of Mt. Vernon Stake Mission Presidency, High Priest Group Leader, Yokohama’s Servicemen’s Branch President, Bishop of Garden Grove 4th Ward and Bishop of Oak Harbor 2nd Ward.

Cecil is survived by his wife Helen, his wife of 64 years, sons Michael Talbot and his wife Elizabeth of Thompson Station, TN and Barry Talbot of Freeland, WA and by eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter Kathleen Talbot Williams.

Visitation for Cecil will be held from 5-8pm Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Wallin Funeral Home, Oak Harbor. A funeral service will be held at the chapel at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Oak Harbor, Friday, July 22, 2016 at 11am. Burial will follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Oak Harbor with full military honors to follow under the auspices of the NAS Whidbey Honor Guard.

By Carey Ross The BFG: Supposedly, BFG stands for “Big Friendly Giant,” but I’m not buying that for a minute. Steven Spielberg teams up with Disney to make a family-friend adaptation of a Roald Dahl book that will make you laugh and cry in equal measure.  (PG • 1 hr. 55 min.)

Central Intelligence: This movie about a bullied geek who grows up to become a CIA agent attending his 20th high school reunion and saving the world from evil looks to possess anything other than the “intelligence” teased in the title, but since it stars do-nowrong Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart, I’m sure it’s way more appealing than it has any right to be.  (PG-13 • 1 hr. 54 min.)

Finding Dory: Nemo’s swimming sidekick gets her own movie, and Pixar gets the boxoffice-shattering animated hit of the summer and another amazingly heartfelt and beautifully rendered film to add to its groundbreaking canon. All is as it should be.  (PG • 1 hr. 37 min.)

Ghostbusters: Remember when this allfemale remake–which boasts a killer cast of lady comics–was announced and bros lost their shit in a real bad way? I’m going to stop rolling my eyes at all those sad, small men just long enough to line up at the box office and vote for this movie with my dollars–and I suggest you do the same.  (PG-13 • 1 hr. 45 min.)

Ice Age: Collision Course: Even its animated dinosaur stars are wishing this series would become extinct.  (PG • 1 hr. 40 min.)

Independence Day: Resurgence: If "Independence Day" taught me anything, it’s that when Roland Emmerich gets himself a giant budget and uses it to try and destroy the world, I will show up, buy a ticket and enjoy the ride.  (PG-13 • 1 hr. 59 min.)

The Infiltrator: Bryan Cranston broke out by breaking bad, and in this taut thriller, he does the same–sort of. This time, he’s one of the good guys, a U.S. Customs agent who goes deep undercover as a volatile, flamboyant money-launderer to cocaine cowboy Pablo Escobar’s lethal drug cartel in this story based on actual events.  (R • 2 hrs. 7 min.)

Lights Out: 2016 has proven to be an excellent year for horror movies, and this movie, about the terrifying things that go bump in the dark is no exception.  (PG-13 • 1 hr. 21 min.)

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates: I used to think Zac Efron was made of good hair and the unrequited love of his teenage fan base, but now I know him to be made of comedy and rock-hard abs, so I’m pretty happy about that. He stars here with Adam DeVine ("Workaholics"), Anna Kendrick, and Aubrey Plaza in some kind of weddingfocused comedy in which the women battle the men to see who are the biggest bros because that’s probably how Hollywood thinks feminism works.  (R • 1 hr. 38 min.)

The Secret Life of Pets: I spend way too much time thinking about what my cat is doing when I’m not around, so this animated movie that shows what animals are up to when they don’t have a human audience– which then morphs into an urban adventure tale–is right up my alley.  (PG • 1 hr.

The Shallows: I have watched the preview for this thriller starring Blake Lively and at least one but possibly several bloodthirsty sharks and a malevolent guy who could possibly be in cahoots with said shark(s) no less than four times and I still can’t tell the first thing about what’s going on.  (PG-13 • 1 hr. 27 min.)

Star Trek Beyond: Until recently, this movie was going to be known as the first "Star Trek" feature in the rebooted franchise that wasn’t directed by nerd king J.J. Abrams.

Now it will go down in history as Anton Yelchin’s final turn as Chekov before the actor was killed in a freak accident, and for the big reveal of Sulu as being gay. I’m sure this film has a plot or whatever, but who's going to remember that?  (PG-13 • 2 hrs.)

LAYERS OF FLAVOR Ever wonder where pasta comes from? Yes the Italians can take credit for this staple food item capable of morphing into dishes of all sorts, but how did it come about? From soups and stews to lasagnas and more, it is the backbone of a diet in many an Italian home. Pasta, however, has found itself wandering into American cuisine and has since settled into a primary role in many homes across the U.S. in any season and for innumerable dishes.

It’s a commonly held belief that pasta was introduced to the Italians upon famed explorer Marco Polo’s return from Asia in the 13th century. By that point noodles had been long since used in Asian cuisine, so it is safe to assume by the time Marco Polo came and went, he likely took the concept back to Italy with him. However, many Italians believe this chief dietary item to predate Marco Polo’s ‘pasta introduction,’ and that its roots can be traced back to the ancient Etruscan civilizations. Pasta is believed to date back to the 3rd century BC. In fact even before that, when the Romans overthrew Greece in 146 BC, the language, culture and foods were assimilated into Roman life. It’s thought the Greek word ‘laganon,’ describing strips of flattened dough, is the namesake of what we know today as ‘lasagna.’ While the Greeks aren’t responsible for lasagna’s invention, they seemingly brought something to the table by way of its naming.

I think it’s safe to say almost everyone, whether Italian or not, knows what lasagna is. Layers of stodgy pasta sheets, in between is sandwiched seasoned meat, tomato sauce, and generous helpings of cheese. So multifarious has this dish become, due to human ingenuity and people's love of lasagna the world over, many a country has adopted its own version of lasagna, and put its own spin on it. In fact, right now one of my closest and most well-traveled friends is sitting on the couch telling me about her meetings with lasagna dishes of all sorts. ‘French’ lasagna using croissants as a base instead of pasta, curry ‘lasagna’ where the meat can be anything from ground beef to lamb to chicken all smothered in curried gravy, into which vegetables are mixed, to mingle with the exotic flavors. This is truly a dish which is more than just versatile. It’s able to be built ‘from the ground up’ using completely nontraditional ingredients, and still turn into a ‘lasagna.’

Gluten free/pastaless lasagna is definitely high up on my list of foods I recommend people make.

Typically, I use zucchini in lieu of pasta sheets, and I prefer to slice mine thicker so the whole dish holds its shape better. I brown ground turkey and some sage sausage in a pan with a couple of teaspoons of minced garlic, and some chopped yellow onion and sprinkle with chopped fresh basil. I then mix this with either my own homemade sauce, or its store bought kin (depending on time constraints). I smooth layers of meat sauce between the zucchini ‘sheets’, and lavish upon the sauce, a very liberal helping of shredded mozzarella cheese. The amount is entirely up to you. Bake to golden perfection, serve with a small helping of ricotta cheese on the side, and indulge your taste buds in sublime deliciousness.

Perhaps if we attribute a lasagna to the layering of ingredients, we can essentially turn anything into this well-loved meal. It can be an appetizer, main course, or dessert. It can be a meat lover’s paradise, or a vegan or vegetarian’s delight. It can be cooked or raw, sweet or savory, and the combinations endless. A lasagna can see to it that left-overs transform into a brand new dish.

Breakfast left overs can be ‘lasagnafied.’ Rolling out biscuit dough into thin flat sheets, and alternating this with sausage, scrambled eggs, a medium cheddar and Monterey jack cheese blend and thick sumptuous pepper gravy raise the bar on your breakfast and take ‘lasagna’ into

a totally different realm. Not feeling in the mood for savory breakfast? No problem, crepes will do the trick too. Layer thin, delicate crepes with golden syrup, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream in a casserole dish, et voila! A decadent breakfast, with a French twist, in an Italian dish with a Greek in origin namesake. As international as any one dish could come, I say!

What about a taco lasagna using Mexican cuisine as the inspiration? I imagine it would be incredibly tasty. You could let your imagination roam free, and your creative edge take the lead in the kitchen. Cumin, chili powder, cilantro, salsa, frijoles refritos, shredded cheddar, jalapenos (or if you prefer a kick in the pants, use habaneros) and ground beef become the stars of this show, and duly take their place between flour or corn tortillas. Exit stage left and follow the path into hungry bellies.

Even desserts can be made to resemble a lasagna. I found a recipe in my quest for the countless ways in which dessert can be turned into a sweet lasagna and came across one for a ‘s’mores’ version. This would be perfect for a summer picnic! I even found a pumpkin pie lasagna. The ingredients epitomize ‘tasty’ and the layering of graham crackers, pumpkin mousse made of sweetened cream, white chocolate chips, pumpkin pie spice, and lady fingers is the embodiment of delicious from two entirely different courses, in one dish.

With National Lasagna Day falling on July 29, 2016, what with it also being quite possibly the world’s oldest pasta, why not indulge in a lasagna of any sort on this day? Perhaps you could invent your own kind of lasagna, which may very well end up becoming a long standing family favorite for years to come. I am including a recipe for crepe breakfast lasagna for two reasons. First, because the entire dish can be adjusted simply by changing the ingredients which are layered between the crepes. This way, you can really make it your own. Second, because I love sweet things and as such I would like to share the sweetness with all of you! If you try this recipe, let me know how it turned out. Crepe Breakfast Lasagna Crepes 2 eggs 1 cup of milk 1 pinch salt 2/3 (two thirds of a) cup all-purpose flour 1 and ½ teaspoons vegetable oil Layer Filling ¾ cup Lyle’s Golden Syrup 2 to 3 cups whipped topping 3 cups chopped fresh strawberries (or fruit of your choice) Blend all ingredients with a whisk until completely smooth. Refrigerate for an hour, covered.

Heat a pan over medium heat and brush with some oil to grease. Pour ¼ cup of batter into the pan and tilt and turn the pan until it’s coated with batter. Cook for 2 to 5 minutes turning to ensure other side is cooked until golden. Repeat until the batter is finished. (If you need more crepes, repeat the entire recipe and process).

Start by placing one crepe in an 8x8 inch casserole dish. Drizzle with golden syrup, arrange on top of that some strawberries and smooth over those with a layer of whipped topping. Repeat until your last layer is whipped topping.
