SUMMER WEATHER NOT HELPING ANGLERS THIS YEAR Fishing and crabbing around the sound has been very productive despite some non-typical summer weather. The July 4 weekend was a perfect example of what Mother Nature can dish out for you when you least expect it. Water conditions were not what one would call ideal, but many anglers still made it out on the water and did quite well.

Salmon fishing is pretty good right now in areas 6 and 7. Many anglers are managing to boat at least one legal king. During the bad weather however, many were forced to fish less productive spots in these areas just to find water which was calm enough to somewhat enjoy their time on the water.

Popular spots like eastern bank and eagle point are very exposed and fishing them depends a lot on water conditions. With better weather this past weekend, anglers were able to get out to these productive waters and score some decent sized fish.

I had heard of some anglers taking shelter in area 9. Now though it is catch and release, the area is set to open July 16 with a pretty small quota. If I was a betting man, I would bet retention will close by the end of July. Be sure to check the WDFW website prior to heading out, just in case they do close it earlier than expected.

Crabbing around the island hasn’t had to deal as much with the weather, although there have been a few rough days. Seeing how most of the weather comes from the west, one can expect to have some protection while crabbing on the east side of the island.

Like last year, the commercial crabbers have not had the opportunity to crab in the most popular spots. This provides recreational anglers a greater chance of filling limits during their outings. This last Sunday, I was able to take some visiting family members out for a few hours and managed to catch everyone’s limit, minus four, in only a few hours. It made for a great family dinner.

I would like to stress again, though, crabbing season brings out a lot of crabbers in boats which are a bit on the small side. If you are in a smaller boat, please check the weather conditions before heading out and always be mindful of changing conditions.

Sudden wind changes can churn up relatively calm water extremely fast. For those of you in bigger boats, let’s be sure to be mindful of the same thing and look out for those in smaller boats as well.

Crabbing will open in area 7 July 15. This affords salmon anglers a chance to drop some pots off before heading to their favorite spots. I suggest putting a little extra weight in your pots, if this is your plan.

Currents on the west side of the island can be severe enough to drag pots miles from where you set them, and in some cases, take them into deeper water where they can easily become lost. This is especially useful if you plan to leave them unattended while out looking for salmon. I have had pot lines get loaded up with kelp or seaweed and drift because I was not checking them at regular intervals.

Area 7 south re-opened July 9 with a 160 shrimp limit. It will remain open until July

16. This was due to recreational shrimp harvests not reaching the assigned quota.

This being the most popular area in the San Juan Islands, many anglers have and will do, the same here as they will when crabbing opens up, which is drop a few pots on their way out to their favorite salmon spots.

Paying attention to the tides will benefit you the most at this time. Personally, I wouldn’t even think about dropping pots and leaving them unattended even on days where the currents are mild.

The action further inland has been productive for salmon as well. Sockeye on the Skagit have been making their way to local anglers freezers and with the early opening of Baker Lake, you too can still make it an item on your to-do list. It wasn’t too long ago the sockeye returns were poor and it makes me happy to see they have seemed to rebound over the last few years.

My La Push trip during the Fourth of July weekend was a good one. I am not going to say great because the water conditions were pretty miserable. One day we had swells that approached 8-10 feet and in a 21-foot boat they made transiting tough.

Finding the sea bass there is quite easy.

Shallow water around the many little rock islands gave us some much needed shielding from the big swells. It was very easy to catch our daily limit of 10 rock fish without a lot of scouting around. My hand is still sore from fighting so many of them on ultra-light gear but they are such a blast to catch this way.

We fished mainly small curly tail grubs on light jig heads. Once you found a school it was fish on with many double and triple hookups, keeping the action on the boat non-stop. The darker colors worked best but the brighter colors worked well early in the morning with the dense marine layer hanging around until mid-day.

Lings were a bit harder to find. Like the waters around Whidbey Island, we found a bunch of just sub-legal fish. Considering the minimum size there is only 22 inches, this made it a bit frustrating. We did manage to get two nice ones the first day. Of course this was the best day for water conditions as well.

Salmon, for us, was out of the question.

Talking with other anglers, the salmon were anywhere from 16-20 miles off the coast. A distance I was not comfortable navigating with the water conditions we were having.

Those with boats 28 feet or bigger were the ones brave enough to head out there. Plus the salmon were spotty as well. One day there were reports of some nice kings being taken with the average fish in the twenties and the next day all they were hooking up with were Coho which had to be released.

Consequently I don’t feel we missed out too much there.

Hopefully in the next week or so we will start to see more summer like conditions.

After several years of feeding wild bunnies, I learned something new today. Unlike us humans, or our dogs and cats, these little critters do not need a container from which to eat.

Shorter than last year's crop, these new baby bunnies are not tall enough to eat from a Jimmy Dean breakfast bowl. These three newbies prefer their rabbit pellets distributed in piles on the driveway. Works for me. No dishes!

The King Returns Last Thursday, after reading in the Daily (once Everett) Herald that King Felix would be making his first rehab start at Everett Memorial Stadium, pitching no more than four innings for the Mariners' Class A Everett Aqua Sox, I said to myself, “Self, why not?”

I looked at my calendar. I went to the computer. I typed in www.aquasox.com. Somehow I hit the right button to find out there were twenty-one tickets remaining. Twenty of those tickets were in general admission for 8 bucks a pop, or a soda, if you are from the east.

The one remaining Diamond Club ticket was $17.00. Are you kidding? For only seventeen bucks, I could join a club with the word “diamond” in it?

Not being a regular user of on-line ticket purchasing, I was a bit fum-fuzzled when hitting my mouse to select the one remaining most expensive ticket, which seemed like a deal to me. Felix for 17! Times two that is 34, his number!

So, I hit my mouse, and up pops my confirmation robot code to verify I am human.

Humanity at this point is not my problem, but trying to read the squished letters shaped like creatures from the Black Font. I failed the first attempt at re-typing the antirobotic code letters, but managed to understand the Kl3mP squishings to enable me to get to the next step, the credit card info.

No problem, boss, I know that number better than my social security.

Credit card in hand, feet at a forty-five degree angle, I was ready to proceed. In fact, you know those three numbers on the back of the credit cards people always want to know? I always get nervous when they ask. But now, I am memorized here. Yep. Memorized. Thank you, Amazon Prime.

After the Aqua Sox digital secretary authorized my ticket, I was asked if I wanted to pay two dollars extra for will-call, print-out at home, or snail mail. Given the game started in three days, snail mail was no option. Given I have no printer, that was no option. Will call, here we go.

On the last page of the transaction, I got to see my confirmation number, and further details about picking up my ticket at the south gate ticket booth. Additionally, I was given the info of seat location, Section ADA F, Row 6, Seat 1 WC. In all my years of ticket purchases, never had I seen so many letters describing a section or a seat. Attributing the excess letters to my previous robotic interludes, I took a picture of my computer monitor with my senior citizen approved flip phone camera. Who needs a memory when we can photograph our lives with phones?

Fast forward to Sunday, for me, just yesterday, as we share this moment of attempted reflection on a Thursday. Not being sure where the stadium is located, as it has been over twenty years since we took our girls there, I decided to take the 11am ferry for a 4:05pm first pitch by Felix.

Have I mentioned Felix was pitching? Do you think five hours is sufficient time to get to Everett from Clinton?

At noon, I pulled into McDonalds to join the post church crowd. With all this time

before the first pitch by Felix, why not wait in line behind a grandfather and the four kids under four who were bouncing up and down, in line, deciding whether to have yogurt or apple slices with their chicken McNuggets, four or six pieces?

Despite offering my table to a young couple and their three kids and the grandma, I was able to finish my sub par food experience without incident. Nothing like runny ketchup to get your day going.

After flossing (in case my dentist reads this one), I checked my cell phone picture to see the street number for the stadium.

3802 Broadway. I was at 41st and Colby, so I knew I was just a slice or two of cheese away.

Being trained in the act of reconnoitering, finding the ball park was pretty easy. Seeing the spikes of rows of game lights towering above the grandstands precluded my having to look at street names. As we say at the bakery, piece of cake.

I backed my truck into a parking spot on the side street below a row of yellow school buses, locked up my jumper cables, and headed toward the lights. Seeing a line, a ticket booth, and a load of folks with yellow shirts, I knew my arrival at 12:15pm was perfect given the gates did not open until 2pm.

At the ticket booth, I was told my will call ticket could be acquired without having to go to the south end of the stadium. My confirmation number, 511419, was the key to unlock the next step to see Felix up close and almost personal.

Ticket in hand, I looked for some shade and a suitable seat for my wait to get into the ballpark. A small wall with perfect height for leg angle gave me a roost in the shade, and a proximity that prevented conversation with others, but a line of sight perfect for a baseball stalker. Sure enough, within minutes, just a few feet behind me, I see some blue-shirted males scurrying from a side door of a building.

Then the blue shirts get right next to me, where I am still seated, to say, “Yep, that's him. He's coming. That's his Rolls Royce.”

Call it the luck of the Presbyterians, but here I was, minding my own unawareness, and up the street, into the parking lot, and out of the parked car, with backpack in hand, is the King. King Felix, thirty feet away from my camera, which was on my phone, but where was it, in what pocket of the three jackets I had brought just in case it was cold, or wet, or like winter? Holy privy, Dave Niehaus, why am I not ready to take a picture, get an autograph, or wearing number 34? If he sees me, will King Felix even care that I am wearing a t-shirt that evidences I was at the Penn Cove Water Festival, 2016?

Can you read my heart racing?

Well, despite getting no autograph, no pic, or no handshake, as Seattle Mariners super hero Felix Hernandez entered the Aqua Sox locker room, this Freelander was the last person to yell at him, “Go get 'em, King!”

The King did just that. He got us all, all 5,189 of us.

Thanks King. A day in the Diamond Club that I shall never forget.

By the way, the last seat in the stadium, that I bought at the last minute? I was seated, first base side, five feet from the Spokane Indians dugout, and no more than thirty yards from the pitcher's mound.

“Hello, King Felix!”

Issues That Matter Forum Takes Emotional Look at Teen Suicide

Editor, I recently got a telephone survey about the coming election but it soon digressed into a smear campaign on Angie Homola, candidate for State Senate. Apparently Senator Barbara Bailey is at it again. It’s been four years since the vicious smear campaign she and her big money lobbyist friends launched against Senator Mary Margaret Haugen. It looks like she’s at it again. Beware you might get one of these deceptive calls too.

I don’t know about you but I am tired of all the big money special interests trying to buy our elections to protect their selfish interests. Since she took office she has had more than $1 million dollars spent on behalf of her campaign or on smearing her opponents.

Don’t believe it? You can check it out on the Washington Public Disclosure Commission website that tracks all the money spent on Washington political campaigns.

The fact is that Angie Homola served as Island County Commissioner during one of our worst recessions in history.

The Island County Government faced financial collapse and she worked with Republicans and Democrats to reduce spending, freeze elected official salaries, while preserving essential services for our veterans, law enforcement, and vulnerable adults. She even donated over $40,000 of her own salary to help save senior programs and support public parks and the 4H. Now that’s a dedication to public service! Island County Democrats Host Annual Summerfest Everyone is invited to come to this year’s Summerfest, which is again at at the beautiful Langley home of Grethe Cammermeyer and Diane Divelbess, 4632 Tompkins Road, on Saturday, July 16, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.

The afternoon includes a gourmet hot dog bar (including non-beef and vegetarian options), side dishes, beer and wine, soft drinks, a dessert auction and the opportunity to hear from many of our local Democratic leaders.

Please Leave Seal Pups Alone

An emotional and hopefully helpful evening unfolded during Sno-Isle Libraries’ “Issues That Matter” event at Snohomish Library.

The June 23 event was the first of four public forums about the causes, scope and prevention of teen suicide in Snohomish and Island counties. Local health officials have noted an increase in teen suicides over the past several years. The Issues That Matter initiative is designed to encourage conversations on topics that impact the community.

“Suicide affects all ages and entire communities,” said forum panelist Dr. Gary Goldbaum, Health Officer and Director of the Snohomish Health District. “Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the suicide rate in Snohomish County is higher than the national average.”

A study done by the health district in 2014 showed that 20 percent of high school students in Snohomish County consider suicide.

Goldbaum said the public-health approach to suicide is not blaming or shaming. “Suicide is not inevitable,” he said. “We can, we will prevent suicides.”

Rena Fitzgerald, manager of the Crisis Chat line run by Volunteers of America Western Washington in Everett, debunked the idea that talking about suicide makes people suicidal.

Indeed, she said, the opposite is true.

“We think people don’t talk about it, but most people do talk about it,” Fitzgerald told the capacity audience in the library’s meeting room. “They say, ‘I can’t do this anymore’ or I’ve figured out a solution.’ You don’t have to be a mental-health professional to help someone. Call the crisis line for advice.”

Megan LaPlante brought a personal perspective to the panel.

LaPlante, a sophomore-to-be at Monroe High School, became emotional as she recounted the suicide of a friend. LaPlante, who is Miss Washington High School America 2016, has made teen suicide awareness and prevention part of her platform. LaPlante showed a video from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) called “Talk Saves Lives.”

It is once again seal pupping season in the Salish Sea, and the Central Puget Sound Marine Mammal Stranding Network asks beach goers to follow the regulations regarding seals and seal pups on the beach and to please Share the Shore!

Seal pups are born in our inland waters June through August. There are 3,000-5,000 harbor seal pups born in Washington inland waters each year. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act harbor seal populations have recovered to healthy numbers. The harbor seal population is at carrying capacity (maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely).

Nursing pups remain with their mothers for 4 to 6 weeks and are then weaned to forage and survive on their own. Harbor seal pups may haul-out in the same place for several days or weeks at a time; this does not mean they are abandoned. Pups that are being weaned must learn to survive and forage for food. Weaned pups will spend extended hours on shore resting and regulating their body temperature. Please respect nature’s role. Up to 50% of the pups born will not survive their first year of life.

Audience members also became emotional as they stood to share their stories. One mother asked what can be done so, “We don’t have another funeral in Marysville.” Another tearful mother said: “I lost my son last year; he wasn’t quite a teen yet. I wish I had known warning signs.”

Many harbor seal pups are too young to have developed protective wariness (escape response) and may not flee when approached while resting and warming up on shore.

Harbor seals use log booms, docks, and shoreline habitat on a daily basis to rest and regulate their body temperature. Please Share the Shore - stay back 100 yards if possible, keep your dogs on a leash, and if the animal is injured call the Central Puget Sound Marine Mammal Stranding Network 1-866-ORCANET (866-672-2638) for Island, Skagit, and Port Susan beaches; or call NOAA Fisheries Regional hotline at 1-866-767-6114 for pups in other areas of the Salish Sea.

Fitzgerald noted there will be an Out of the Darkness community walk on Oct. 15 at Legion Park in Everett. Sponsored by the AFSP, the walks are intended to raise awareness and funds to help the organizations work toward its goals.

Harbor seals (and all marine mammals) are protected by law under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Federal marine mammal regulations prohibit harassing seals to reduce human disturbance of important life processes.

Act Today to Avoid Financial Regrets Tomorrow

“Regrets? I’ve had a few.” – Frank Sinatra.

Mr. Sinatra, one of the most famous entertainers of the 20th century, did things his way, but he was also familiar with remorse. He’s not alone, of course.

We all deal with regrets – and financial ones are among the most troublesome.

Here are the leading financial regrets, according to a recent survey by Bankrate.com, along with some suggestions for avoiding them: Not saving for retirement early enough – This was the top regret expressed by survey respondents. Saving and investing early for retirement offers you two key benefits. First, the more time you give growth-oriented investments, the greater their growth potential. And second, by saving and investing for retirement early in your career, you will likely need to put away less money each year than you would if you waited until, say, your 40s or 50s. So, if you aren’t already doing so, contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan. And increase your contributions every time your salary rises.

Not saving enough for emergency expenses – You can’t plan for all expenses. Your furnace might die, your car may need a major repair, you may incur a sizable doctor’s bill – the list goes on and on. If you don’t have the money available to meet these costs, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments. That’s why it’s important to maintain an emergency fund, containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, in a liquid, low-risk account.

Taking on too much credit card debt – If you don’t overuse your credit cards, they can be handy and helpful, in many ways. Try to keep a lid on your credit card debt, keeping in mind that your debt payments reduce the amount of money you have available to invest for your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement.

Not saving enough for children’s education — This may be perhaps the most difficult regret to address – after all, it’s not easy to save for your own retirement and simultaneously put money away for your children’s college educations. However, if you can afford to save for college, try to do so in as advantageous a manner as possible.

Buying a bigger house than you can afford – If you tie up too much money in mortgage payments, you will have less to contribute to your various retirement accounts. And while home equity certainly has some value, it generally does not provide you with the same liquidity – and probably not the same potential for growth and income – as an investment portfolio that’s appropriate for your needs and risk tolerance. So, think carefully before purchasing that big house – you might be better served by scaling down your home ownership and ramping up your investments.

You can’t avoid all the doubts and misgivings you’ll encounter at various stages of your life. But if you can reduce those regrets associated with your finances, you could well increase your satisfaction during your retirement years.

DjangoFest Northwest 2016 Lineup Announced

As North America’s premier Gypsy Jazz music festival, DjangoFest Northwest welcomes the genre’s top performers from around the world to celebrate the culturally unique musical heritage of Django Reinhardt. This year continues that tradition with a stellar lineup featuring brothers Stocholo and Moses Rosenburg and their special guest Christiaan van Hemert; and world-class artists from France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Canada, UK, and the U.S. including: Antoine Boyer, Samuelito Rouesnel, and 2016 Saga Award winner Noe Reine of France; Gustav Lundgren, Andreas Unge, and Martin Vidlund of Sweden; Robin Nolan and Zazi of the Netherlands; Martin Taylor of the U.K.; The Marc Atkinson Trio, Van Django and Quinn Bachand of Canada; and American Artists John Jorgenson, Pearl Django, Rhythm Future, Nuages, and Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers”.

The festival concludes with “Djam Europa” on Sunday, September 25, featuring nine of the European artists: Stocholo and Moses Roenburg, Christaan van Hemert, Gustav Lundgren,

practiced for four months, several times each week. And, during the final week, they practiced each day.

The Skagit Valley College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program prepares students for careers within the food industry. Learning experiences include practical lab work, classroom instruction, independent and cooperative study in baking, food preparation, restaurant cooking, customer service, banquets, catering, and hospitality management. SVC’s program is one of only 10 schools in Washington state to be certified by the American Culinary Federation (ACF).

Volunteer Docents Needed at Langley Whale Center

Four Skagit Valley College (SVC) Culinary Arts student chefs recently earned medals at a two-day American Culinary Federation (ACF) regional competition in Bellingham. Student competitors traveled from Montana, Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. The judges were ACF certified judges, the furthest judge traveling from Kentucky.

You can make a huge impact by raising awareness about the whales and the importance of providing them healthy and safe habitats.

Representing SVC Culinary Arts, Ellie Ferguson (Coupeville) won a Gold medal and Clifton Cates (Oak Harbor) won a Silver medal in the Cold Pastry category. Ellie and Clifton had 15 minutes to set up, 90 minutes to cook, and 10 minutes to plate. Cristina Kazakov (Mount Vernon) won a Silver medal and Kayla Guernsey (Mount Vernon) won a Bronze medal in the Hot Kitchen category. Cristina and Kayla had 15 minutes to set up, 60 minutes to cook, and 10 minutes to plate.

The Langley Whale Center is currently taking Volunteer Applications and they provide the training. It only takes six to twelve hours a month to become connected to the amazing creatures who frequent the waters near Whidbey Island and in Puget Sound. Volunteer Docents greet and count visitors, explain educational displays and help with gift shop sales. All ages are welcome to join the team.

SVC’s team was unique in that they are all first-year Culinary Arts students, while most other competitors were second-year students.

Oak Harbor officials hope to find Centennial Grove vandal

An all-terrain vehicle rider who vandalized Oak Harbor’s Centennial Grove has done more than financial damage to the citizen project.

“It makes me angry,” said Oak Harbor mayor Bob Severns. “To just go in and try to destroy it just for the fun of it is hard to understand.”

Severns is referring to an incident July 1 at the city’s Centennial Grove of Garry Oak trees along Highway 20 and Fakkema Road just north of town.

A witness driving along Fakkema Road about 9:30 p.m. saw a young man with a lanky build and dirty blonde, longer hair riding an ATV with its lights off in the back section of the grove, where 237 Garry Oak seedlings were planted last fall and winter in commemoration of the city’s centennial anniversary. The rider drove over approximately 100 seedlings, damaging their protective tubes and destroying their bamboo stakes.

“Most of the trees are going to live,” said Oak Harbor civil engineer Brad Gluth, who was very involved in the Centennial Grove project. “A few got run over and may die. Others were crushed, broken or bent. Most of the damage was to the tree tubes and the bamboo stakes.”

Gluth estimates the damage to the grove at about $200 to $300 and said it will require a lot of time and work to fix the damage. And now, he said, the city has to look at possibly installing fencing around the grove to prevent further vandalism.

“The thing is, this is mostly a volunteer citizen project,” he said. “There were donations of materials and money and those 237 trees were grown by local people who collected acorns and planted them. A lot of effort went into growing all those acorns.”

Because the Centennial Grove was mostly a citizen project, there wasn’t a large budget for it in the first place and there is certainly no budget for fencing, which he estimates could cost as much as $3,000 for the most basic kind.

“We have to spend money on fundamentals first,” said Gluth. “There’s not a huge budget to pay for fencing, so we’re going to have to figure out how to do some fundraising and somehow come up with the labor.”

Island Shakespeare Festival breaks new ground

The Island Shakespeare Festival has grown by leaps and bounds since its beginning six years ago and this year the festival takes a giant leap forward.

For the first time, the festival is performing three classic plays in rotating repertory: Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Julius Caesar and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. Performances began last weekend and will continue at 6 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday through Sept.

“It’s very exciting. It’s a big year of growth,” said Olena Hodges, associate artistic director for the Island Shakespeare Festival. “We have a company of 15 actors and they’re all in all three shows, so that is also a first.”

The first phase of the Centennial Grove included planting 100 saplings, each about six feet tall, near the front of the property closest to Highway 20. None of the saplings were damaged in the incident. The purpose of the grove was to help welcome people to the city of Oak Harbor, which takes its name from the Garry Oak trees native to the area.

“This grove was planted not for us, but for future generations to enjoy,” said Gluth, who is also a

“We are easily joining the ranks of professional regional theater, which is exciting,” said Hodges. “We offer a really exciting summer for actors to come to a beautiful place, stay in a wonderful community and be compensated for their work.”

“Theatre companies do not often grow so quickly,” said ISF founder Susannah Rose Woods via email. “That said, I believe the work, the professionalism, the setting, the artists from across the country as well as locally, the guest directors, the designers...it's more than the sum of its parts, but the whole makes for riveting theatre.”

Professional theater on Whidbey Island – many might believe that comes with a big ticket price. But that is not the case.

“We are a Pay What You Will company, which means everyone can afford to come,” said Woods.

“I’m disappointed someone would damage something so many people came together to plant,” said Gluth.

“We have an extra closeness to the project,” Severns said, adding he and his wife, Rhonda, purchased one of the saplings that was planted last fall.

The festival has quickly earned a reputation of excellence in the theater world. Hundreds of actors from all over the United States auditioned to be a part of this season. Hodges estimates about half of the company is from the Seattle area, where the ISF had been heavily promoted.

“So often Shakespeare is thought of as elite,” said Hodges. “We believe at our core that high quality, professional theater should be available for everyone. We intend to stay “pay what you will” forever.

Woods founded the Island Shakespeare Festival in 2010. Performances began outdoors at the South Whidbey home of Timothy Fritz and Vivienne Hull. It moved to Langley in 2013 because of the festival’s growth, and last year it moved to its new home at 5476 Maxwelton Road just

outside Langley, on the former South Whidbey Primary School campus.

“I think we've grown so fast that it brings its own specific challenges in keeping up,” Woods said. “A growing theatre has growing financial needs just to simply maintain that growth. We've also 'outgrown' two locations and settling into a 'home' has been a challenge until this year.”

For the past couple of years, performances have been held under a custom-made vintage circus tent, but this year a concrete stage has been poured and performances will once again be held outdoors. Eventual plans call for construction of an outdoor amphitheater.

Performances are held rain or shine, unless weather conditions become dangerous.

“We have only cancelled performances twice,” said Hodges, who said audience members are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner - and maybe some blankets. “It can get cold, so bring layers, bring raincoats. We will perform unless weather conditions make it unsafe.”

The format of doing two works by Shakespeare and one other classic is likely to become the standard for future ISF seasons. Hodges said she believes the material selected for performances this year will strike a chord with audiences.

“As You Like It and Jane Eyre both deal with the natural world and the self-discovery that occurs when one is allowed to experience nature,” she said. “Julius Caesar is set in Rome, of course, but there are a lot of parallels to contemporary political events.”

Oak Harbor man lends helping hand to Help House

Jason Garcia works methodically, with attention to detail, as he fills bags with rice that will eventually find their way to the dinner tables of hundreds of families in need on Whidbey Island’s north end.

Garcia, 37, has been a faithful volunteer at the North Whidbey Help House for at least 10 years.

It doesn’t matter to him if he’s filling bags of rice,

sorting canned goods, sweeping the floor or carrying a box to someone’s car. He is happy to help, no matter the chore.

“It’s pretty fun,” Garcia said. “I like to help out.”

“We couldn’t run without volunteers,” said Help House Executive Director Jean Weiman. “We have a staff of four. We could manage if we had to, but our volunteers certainly help us accomplish more.”

Garcia, who has Down Syndrome, also volunteers several hours a week for WAIF and Headstart. Volunteering is something that comes naturally to his family.

“I have always felt that people who have more have a responsibility to help those who don’t,” said Jason’s mom, Debbie Garcia. “I think it comes from my mom.”

It is an attitude Debbie has passed down to all her children equally. While at first she said she was hesitant to send Jason out into the community, the rewards have been of benefit to all.

“Initially, I thought it would be good for him to keep him busy, but it’s really been a two-way street,” she said. “Not only is he helping people, it helps him and gives him the socialization he needs. It gives him a sense of belonging.”

North Whidbey Help House has a core group of about 10 volunteers. Weiman says the beauty of having Jason’s help is that he’s happy to pitch in anywhere.

“The nice thing about Jason is that he comes in and asks us what we want him to do that day,” said Weiman. “It could be bagging rice, or whatever.”

“They have a warehouse out back,” explained Jason. “Sometimes I help put all the cans in place, sometimes I pack boxes into cars.”

bakery and produce items. That’s about 1,400 people helped each month. Weiman said in her 19 years at the Help House, they’ve almost tripled the number of families served.

For Jason it is helping people, whether the Help House staff or the people they serve, that matters the most to him. That’s what has brought him back there every Friday with a smile on his face and a great attitude.

Weiman estimates there were 950 volunteer hours donated to the Help House last year. Jason is responsible for at least 104 of those hours, plus more than 360 hours at his other volunteer jobs.

“He kind of looks at it like it’s a job with no pay, but he understands he’s helping people,” said Debbie. “It’s a big deal to him when he gets recognized, because he knows he’s doing well.”

“If you talk to him about the places he helps at, he will always talk about the people,” said Debbie. “Volunteering helps him feel part of the community.”

“What we all love about Jason is that all we have to do it show him what we need him to do, and he does it,” said Weiman. “Plus, he’s got a great sense of humor. He comes up with some zingers and you never know when to expect it.”

“I like helping out families,” he said.

The Help House provides an average of 571 families with food each month, not including

According to Gluth, the grove of Garry Oaks was important for another reason, too.

“We’re losing one to three mature trees every year. They’re aging out,” he said. “Nothing lasts forever and most of our trees are mature. If we don’t keep planting them, in 100 years we won’t be Oak Harbor.”

The witness saw the ATV rider exit the grove via a trail on the east side and head south, and authorities were able to follow the vehicle’s tracks into a nearby neighborhood. Severns said the city will look into whether any charges are possible in the case, but said he would like the city to at least get restitution for the damage.

Gluth has his own ideas for what should happen to the ATV vandal.

“A lot of people were excited about this grove and it just takes one bad apple to spoil it. I would like them to come and fix the tubes and pay for the bamboo,” he said. “For one person it’s an all day job.

Maybe if they put in a full day it will make them appreciate the work of others.”

"Falling in love, feeling betrayed, those are two big themes of the shows we’re doing that we can all relate to,” Hodges said. “I think the human condition and experience is what Shakespeare wrote about and why we still care and still relate.”

Woods is directing As You Like It, which was the first play performed at the festival. Julie Beckman is directing her own award-winning adaptation of Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Julius Caesar is being directed by Corey McDaniel, producing artistic director of Seattle’s Theatre 22.

“I fell in love with ISF and Whidbey Island two summers ago when I attended Richard III,” said McDaniel. “The production was magnificent detailed, specific, well-staged and wonderfully executed. It was one of the best Shakespearean experiences I had ever had. In the wooded, island setting it was pure magic. I knew at that first encounter that I wanted to work on the island with ISF.” Hodges said McDaniel and Beckman’s interpretation of these classic stage works help broaden their appeal.

“Changing the context, that is a trend in contemporary theater and it’s done because the stories are universal and timeless,” she said. “Jane Eyre is a new adaptation of a classical piece. New works from old words – it’s something we will be pursuing in the future.”

Hodges, who grew up on Whidbey Island, is also performing in all three plays. Actors were in rehearsals for ten hours each day starting in June.

“Each show is such a different world. When one ends, you’re leaving that world,” she described.

“All the characters are super different in each show, too, so as an actor you’re not stuck. It certainly has been challenging.

“Rotating repertory theater is not for every actor and it’s not for the faint of heart,” she continued.

Each play will be performed once every weekend, with one of them repeating on Sunday.

Theater fans could actually see all three plays in one weekend. The full schedule and directions are available online at www.islandshakespearefest.org. All performances begin at 6 p.m.

Chairs are provided, but there is a section for audience members to spread out blankets upon which to sit. Patrons may not bring in alcohol, but beer and wine are available for purchase.

Central Intelligence: This movie about a bullied geek who grows up to become a CIA agent attending his 20th high school reunion and saving the world from evil looks to possess anything other than the “intelligence” teased in the title, but since it stars do-nowrong Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart, I’m sure it’s way more appealing than it has any right to be.  (PG-13 • 1 hr. 54 min.)

Let’s Dish! with Kae Harris

“WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM!” What’s one of the best ways to cool your core on a warm summer day, other than swimming and having fun in the water? I’ll give you a few hints.

It’s been around since about the 5th century BC in ancient Greece (in a rudimentary form of what it is today of course). It was also brought to Europe in the 1300s by Marco Polo from Asia.

Still not sure? It’s ice cream! This delightfully sweet, refreshingly cool, smooth creamy treat always seems to just have a way of cooling us down in the best of ways, on the warmest of days, and has been doing this for thousands of years.

There are so many different varieties of ice cream nowadays, it’s unbelievable. When I was little there was nowhere near the sheer amount available today. I think my favorite ice cream flavor is coffee. Coffee is my friend. I enjoy a cup regardless of what the ambient temperature is.

In ice cream though, it becomes something else entirely. It’s my ‘friend’ who showed up with a good DVD AND ice cream, and now we get to hang out together. Coffee flavored ice cream aside, when I peruse the cold section in any grocery store, it always takes me a little longer because I make a point of taking in the vast options of this treat to choose from. Strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, mint chocolate chip, caramel, birthday cake, chocolate chip cookie dough, cherry, on and on and on. These don’t even

include the list of sherbets, or sorbets available.

I’ve even seen avocado ice cream and I will be trying it soon. Endless rows of this dessert and people with their ceaseless enterprising, can-do, utter creativity, always seem to be able to come up with not only new flavor combinations, but whole new desserts using ice cream!

I’m just going to say it, fried ice cream. Yes. This is also an insanely decadent, can’t-wrap-mymind-around-it kind of dessert. It’s ice cream, battered, then deep fried, and yet I can still discern very well, the actual ice cream within the safe and tasty confines of the batter blanket surrounding it. Delicious. What about ice cream spaghetti? In Germany, they sometimes pump ice cream through an extruder and out slides strings of ice cream on the other side. Top it with strawberry sauce and you have yourself cream ‘sgettie’ with ‘marinara’. How about mustard and truffle ice cream, or perhaps you are in the mood for a caviar one? In France, ice cream artisan Philippe Faur creates semi frozen works of art including nine savory flavors. In Singapore, many a street cart vendor selling ice cream does so in the form of loti, a bread (which is often multicolored) between which is sandwiched a helping of ice cream often in mango, corn and taro flavors. It surely is one food which has travelled the world for many years, and there’s no apparent sign of it ceasing its journey anytime soon!

What makes ice cream exactly what it is though?

LOCALLY OPERATED.

The most crucial ingredient when making ice cream is the milk. Federal regulations dictate ice cream to have at least 10% milk fat. All the attributes milk brings to the proverbial ice cream table, in terms of the fat content, directly affect the consistency, palatability, smoothness and over all food value of the end result. In order to make commercial ice cream, basic ingredients (milk fats and sweeteners) are combined in a machine which ‘agitates’ them. This mixture is then ushered into a tank where it is pasteurized; heated and held at a certain temperature.

This, now hot mixture, is then pushed through a homogenizer quite rapidly where pressure is applied in order to break the milk fat down into much smaller particles. The mixture is then ‘batch’ cooled to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, all ready for aeration. This is where blades slice, if you will, through the mix creating a whipping action which in turn pulls little air particles into the mixture. What this does is prevents the ice cream from just becoming a stiff, solid lump when it freezes. The next step on the mixture's journey to packaging and subsequently our bellies, is the incorporation of flavorings, after which the not yet solid merger of fruits, nuts, chocolate chips, cake bits, cookie dough (whatever flavoring was added) and base ingredients are then pumped into its allocated mold, whether a gallon tub or tiny cup. It then moves along to a freezer which brings the temperature down to sub-zero in order to achieve its final, perfected state, ready for distribution, sale and consumption.

But what about the means in which we chow down on an ice cream? What vehicle is used to move the treat into our mouths? Spoons, yes, but also and more commonly, cones. In 1896, an Italian immigrant to the United States by the name of Italo Marchiony created his ice cream cone. Since ice cream had been pleasing palates in the states since the mid-1700s, it was the perfect business opportunity for Marchiony and he was granted a patent for the cone in 1903. In 1904, another form of the cone was brought to the ice cream scene at the St. Louis World Fair, when Syrian concessionaire Ernest A. Hamwi, saw a gap in the market. His neighboring vendor, selling ice cream at the fair, ran out of bowls and Mr. Hamwi quickly formed his fare (zalabia – a

deep fried pastry dessert) into cones, gave it to the ice cream vendor who spooned ice cream in it and introduced this to the more than satisfied customers. They became a hit in St. Louis and business men soon capitalized on it’s potential, making machinery to produce ‘cornucopias,’ the name these cones went by back then. Today, the trademark shape is one which inspires us to get creative with our ice cream scoop combinations, and asking ourselves “do I want just one scoop, or should I have two?”

I know it’s relatively easy for most people to just go to the store, and pick an ice cream to bring home and eat, but if you could make your own at home, imagine all the possibilities! I will include a basic, super easy ice cream recipe and if you try it, let me know how you like it! With National ice cream day falling on July 17 this year, I say get out there and have yourself a scoop or two to celebrate! Easy Ice Cream 14.5 oz can of sweetened condensed milk 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract 1 pint of heavy whipping cream Mix ins of your choice (optional) Place the first three ingredients in a large bowl.

Using an electric mixer, whisk for 5 minutes or until stiff, whipped peaks form. If you want to add mix ins, this is the point where it’s incorporated. After you have blended in the mix ins with a spoon, turn the mixture out into a baking pan, (I use a metal bread pan) and freeze for 8 hours.

With 2016 marking the 38th year the Coupeville Farmers Market has been serving us, it’s important to note just how focused it is on community bonds, and how dedicated those who ensure tirelessly, it’s efficient operation are to its transparency. Local is the keyword and 80% of the farmers are on island - the percentage is higher if you add in all vendors. Quality and respect for the community is paramount and, as such, the Coupville Farmers Market Manager makes bi-yearly visits to all the produce vendors. ‘Know your farmer, know your food’ is a phrase the manger is confident in using. She ensures there is no brokering or reselling so the community can rest assured that what is being purchased is nothing but the best!
