DOG DAYS
HANNAH BUNDSCHUH/ CHATTERBOX
Keegan Sullivan, ‘18 The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show predates the invention of the light bulb, the automobile and the zipper, and was initially held on May 8, 1877. The first show consisted of gun dogs led by a group of hunters who met regularly at Westminster Hotel. Original prizes varied, and once included pearl-handled pistols. Terriers have been the most common winning breed of Best In Show -- 46 of the 140 winners being terriers. Shortly after this first dog show, partici-
pants formed the Westminster Kennel Club, which became the first club to join the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1884. Popularity of the show continued to grow, eventually necessitating a cap of entrants at 2,800 and a move to Madison Square Garden for the main event. The show began airing on television in 1948 and has been broadcast nationally on USA Network, NBC News and Fox News. The annual show features nearly 3,000 dogs who are judged against their own breed’s standards. To win, the dog must come as close as possible to what the judges
consider the ideal version of that type of dog. This year the 130-year-old event was held on Monday, Feb. 1, where Rumor, a German Shepherd, won best in show. Breed rounds took place at Piers 92 and 94. Madison Square Garden hosted the Best In Show and Group rounds. The Best In Show competition ran from Feb. 13-14. This included the 2nd Masters Obedience Championship two days before the main event. Additionally, the club hosted a “Meet and Compete” event, featuring the Masters Agility Champi-
onship and a “Meet the Breed” session. The competition featured seven different breed groups: hound, toy, non-sporting, herding, sporting, working and terrier. The Westminster Kennel Club does not list any prize money or winnings on its website; instead, the Best in Show winner gets a “polished pewter gallery bowl” and a “polished pewter trophy” for Reserve Best in Show. The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship will be held in Orlando, Fl. during December. It is a slightly bigger show than Westminster.
