On Aug. 27, the Walnut Hills’ men’s varsity football team dominated the Woodward Bulldogs, something fans haven’t seen in Walnut’s football program in years. The dominating 35-8 score proved the Eagles are ready to dominate the rest of the season. The game, originally scheduled for the Friday night before, was moved to Aug. 27 because of a lightning storm. The change in date, however, did not stop the Eagles from trouncing Woodward on offense. The Eagles gained a total of 315 yards and held the Bulldogs offense at 186. Offensively, the team saw running backs Robvae McDonald, ‘18, and Peyton Doughtry, ‘18, each contribute 75 plus rushing yards and a touchdown. Both are newcomers to Walnut and seem to have adjusted quickly to the Eagle offense. The team saw Solomon Cummings, ‘18, throw a touchdown to SENIOR Michael Davenport for 48 yards - one of the more exciting plays of the game. The defensive side controlled the game by limiting Woodward to eight points. SENIOR Quintin Mincy and Jowon Briggs, ‘19, each recorded a sack as well. It was a wonderful showing on how far the Eagles have progressed over the offseason. As SENIOR Captain John-Allen Phillips put it, “Every day is different. We are constantly improving by competing against ourselves.”

After a blowout game (35-8) against Woodward, the Walnut Hills mens’ varsity football team came out prepared to go against Ross. “We just had to fix the little things as the week went on and come out to play our game on Friday,” SENIOR Caleb Warmack, one of five captains of the team, said. The Eagles did just that; they came out and played their game. Dominating in the first half, Robvae McDonald, Peyton Doughty, and Zach Bahri, ‘18, scored a total of 14 points. After scoring two more times in the second quarter, the Eagles walked off the field at halftime leading 28-0. Later in the third quarter, Doughty scored his second touchdown of the night, helping to bring the Eagles up 35-0 against the Rams. With just five minutes left in the game, the Rams were able to sneak into the end zone, making the final score of the game 35-7. Head coach Brian Lainhart has helped turn the football program around and bring excitement back to the team. “[Lainhart] has brought so much energy and excitement to the program. He treats the players like they are his own and is there for everyone. As the coaching staff says ‘it’s like climbing a mountain.’ I know that Coach Lainhart and the other coaches will get them to the top and I can’t wait to be there alongside,” Team manager Maria Ramsey said.

The nut house was buzzing after McDonald’s 48 yard touchdown, Walnut’s first of the night. Many students came out to support the team. DISCLAIMER: Aaron Espelage is the film manager for the mens’ varsity football team.
