English Car Affair in the Park The Belfry presents Goodnight Desdemona

Celebrated novelist and playwright Ann-Marie MacDonald goes nose-to-nose with the Bard in the Belfry Theatre’s production of Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), a delicious romp through time and space onstage September 17 to October 20. When a lovelorn academic – convinced that Shakespeare’s Othello and Romeo and Juliet were intended to be comedies – is transported into the middle of these masterpieces, she begins a comic journey that proves that Romeo, Juliet, Othello and Desdemona ain’t what they used be. And neither is our heroine!

Dracula descends on Craigdarroch Beware this October when “a blood moon shall rise, unhallowed ground shall spread and Hell shall be unleashed upon the city when the world’s most famous force of evil descends and takes root at Craigdarroch Castle.” Don’t miss the ghoulish fun when the historic nineteenth century castle hosts Dracula – The Blood is the Life. Adapted from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel by David Radford and Christina Patterson, this new take on the famous tale mixes Dracula with a dose of demonic exorcism, led by the famous vampire hunter Professor Abraham Van Helsing. You may think you’ve seen the story of Count Dracula, but you’ve never seen it like this. Audiences tour the castle’s interior and exterior as scenes of Stoker’s tale unfold around them. Dracula

Classic cars on display Car enthusiasts will want to mark September 8 on their Victoria travel itinerary, a chance to see the Old English Car Club’s 18th annual English Car Affair in the Park at Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site. At 10am precisely, the skirl of the pipes will herald the start of this very popular event, featuring more than 100 classic and vintage British automobiles festooning Fort Rodd’s open meadow. After checking out the classic rides, continue your explorations through the 19th century fort and lighthouse, the first built on Canada’s West Coast. Coming up the following weekend, September 15, is the Vancouver Island Motor Gathering, hosted by the German Auto Import Network, located on the beautiful waterfront grounds of the Queen Alexandra Centre, 2400 Arbutus Rd, from 11am to 4pm. All proceeds support the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.

Falling for

Autumn

10 ways to

celebrate the harvest in the Garden City While Victoria earns deserved accolades for its early spring and easy-livin’ summer, the Island’s long, easy transition to fall has a beauty all its own. Here are excellent opportunities to fall for a Victoria autumn

Harvest Time 1. The bounty of local farms enjoys a starring role at many of the region’s markets. The Moss Street Market is a long-standing city favourite for fresh and delicious organic produce, flowers and local arts and crafts, from 10am to 2pm Saturdays through early October. For those enjoying a visit to the Saanich Peninsula, stop by the delightful Peninsula Farmer’s Market, 9am to 1pm Saturdays through early October. 10

where.ca // september - october 2013

Hosted at the Saanich Fairgrounds, in the middle of farm country, you’ll find plenty to please the palate. 2. Feast of Fields, September 22 at Metchosin Farm, is another favourite among foodies and locavores, with the opportunity to taste the flavours of the Island from chefs, vintners, brewers, farmers and food artisans (www.farmfolkcityfolk.ca).

Growing Attractions 3. A family favourite in the Blenkinsop Valley, Galey Farms plants a new corn maze each year, complemented by a western town, train ride, petting farm and more. Come mid-October, those features take on a decidedly spooky twist. 4. Harvest time on the farm comes to Heritage Acres September 14 and 15, featuring train rides, steampowered threshing, food, entertainment and more for the whole family. Don’t miss the butterdipped corn on the cob! 5. Enjoy a short ferry ride from Sidney for the 15th annual
Salt Spring Island Apple Festival, September 29, with a full day of activities celebrating the 350-plus varieties of organic apples grown ion the picturesque island! (www.saltspringapplefestival.org)

Wonderful Wineries 6. One of the highlights of a visit to the Saanich Peninsula, just minutes from downtown, is a self-guided tour of the region’s award-winning wineries. Local highlights include: • Church & State Winery – award winning wines, a stunning location and locally inspired lunch cuisine from the bistro make a stop here a pleasure. • Muse Winery – in North Saanich, this charming winery is well worth the picturesque drive, with a lovely array of wines, art events and a seasonal bistro. • Sea Cider Organic Ciderhouse – Not wine, but in many ways similar, taste the differences of traditional cider at this popular destination. Sample a tasting plate from inside the woodenbeamed ciderhouse, or outside on the beautiful deck overlooking the orchard, ocean and Gulf Islands. 7. Stretch your tour a little farther with a drive over the Malahat to the equally honoured wineries and cideries of the Cowichan Valley and the Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival September 7 to 15, or head west to Sooke and the

Things get Spooky at Galey Farm

tasty delights waiting at Tugwell Creek Meadery.

Favourite Fall Events 8. At the Saanich Fairgrounds Labour Day weekend is the Saanich Fair, with agricultural displays and events, entertainment, food and a midway, continuing to September 2. 9. Head west to the community of Langford September 13 to 15 for the annual Luxton Fair, with agricultural displays, midway, games, blacksmithing and antique farm equipment, entertainment and more. 10. As summer turns to fall, head to Victoria’s famous greenspaces, including The Butchart Gardens, Abkhazi Garden, Government House The harvest is delicious at Sea Cider

These popular 90-minute walks take place nightly at 7:30pm until October 24. Extra 9:30pm walks are offered nightly from September 1 to 14 and Fridays and Saturdays September 15 to October 17. autumn awakens at West end This fall, discover the BC landscape as viewed through the eyes of two of the province’s most revered artists. West End Gallery welcomes the arrival of fall September 21 with Steven Armstrong’s Collected Landscapes for Autumn, continuing through October 3. It’s the Victoria artist’s eighth solo exhibition at West End. “Intrigued by what makes a particular place or painting resonate through the years, he explores landscapes that are

easily recalled and often fondly remembered.” From October 5 to 17, the gallery welcomes Wet Paint by Rod Charlesworth. Primarily a self-taught artist who paints his way across the country as he explores the grand tradition of capturing the Canadian landscape on canvas, Charlesworth uses “brilliant colour and thick, broad brush strokes to emphasize the light and depth in each painting,” creating a distinct, consistent and easily recognized style.

Simply Luminous Enjoy a visit to the neighbourhood of Oak Bay, a few minutes from downtown Victoria, and the charming Avenue Gallery. Opening with an artist reception October 27 is a stunning display of coastal paintings by talented Chinese artist Bi Yuan Cheng, aptly titled Luminous. Join the gallery and artist from noon to 3 p.m. The exhibit continues to November 7.

hot dinING Pacific Restaurant pours it on

Wine-on-tap trend comes to Victoria, improving quality & reducing carbon footprint Smashing stereotypes about bulk wine, the Hotel Grand Pacific is now offering guests “wine-ontap.” The FreshTAP system allows restaurants to serve high-quality wines at a consistent temperature, maintain freshness, eliminate waste and reduce the environmental footprint of wine service. With five taps in The Pacific Restaurant, offerings include some of British Columbia’s favourite wineries – the Clos du Soleil Pinot Blanc, Stag’s Hollow Semillon, Calliope Riesling, CedarCreek Merlot and Blasted Church Big Bang Theory, all from British Columbia’s Okanagan or Similkameen valleys. The wines are available by the glass for $8 to $10, or by the half-litre.

Brewery & the Beast Phillips Brewery will be transformed into a giant backyard barbecue when Brewery & The Beast: Victoria’s second annual Festival of Meat gets cooking September 22. More than 30 talented South Island chefs will demonstrate their skill and passion for cooking everything from classic barbecue, charcuterie and smoked meats to house-made sausage, ethnic-inspired creations and whole animal roasts. Tickets can be purchased online at www.selectyourtickets. com or in person at the Phillips Brewery.

Saffron & Swans Whether an appy with friends over an award-winning artisan beer at the Swans Brewpub or an intimate dinner for two at the neighbouring Wild Saffron Bistro, you won’t go wrong with the dining options at Swans Hotel. Long a favourite with both locals and guests, both locations are found in the heart of Victoria’s Old Town.

In addition to lunch, dinner and cicchetti (Venetian tapas) menus, diners will enjoy the interesting wine list with a focus on both BC and international winemakers, as well as traditional and custom cocktails, with added touches including house-made bitters and vermouths on the menu, and of course, Spanish sherry.

Neighbourhoods INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to great shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the Maritime Museum. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, The Bateman Centre and the Victoria Bug Zoo. Shoppers will love Government Street, LoJo (lower Johnson Street), Fort Street and the Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. East of downtown, Rockland is a prestigious area of older, stately homes; attractions include Craigdarroch Castle, Government House Gardens and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Northwest of 38

downtown, over the Johnson Street Bridge, Esquimalt is home to CFB Esquimalt, beautiful Saxe Point Park and CFB Esquimalt’s museum. OAK BAY This charming area of Tudorstyled homes, oak trees and manicured gardens is a few minutes' drive from downtown. Oak Bay Village and the Avenue are the main shopping areas with excellent shops and galleries, featuring antiques, art, gifts, china, fashion and jewellery. Dining options range from English-style pubs and afternoon tea houses to modern bistros and beautiful waterfront dining rooms, including the Marina Restaurant. Oak Bay is also one of Victoria’s best paddling and cycling areas. Beach Drive, Estevan Village, the Oak Bay Marina and Willows Beach are popular stops. www.oakbaytourism.com Old TOWN / CHINATOWN Just north of Bastion Square and the shops of Government Street is Old Town. During the Gold Rush in the mid1800s, this area was known as “the other side of the tracks.” Now, Old Town is a popular shopping and dining area. Market Square is the “heart” of Old Town and features a collection of shops and restaurants in restored heritage buildings. Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada. The Gate of Harmonious Interest is a landmark constructed to recognize Chinese immigrants’ participation in establishing the City of Victoria. SAANICH AND CORDOVA BAY Saanich is a large residential area beginning north of downtown. Highlights include Mt. Douglas Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views, Elk/Beaver Lake Park, a great spot for watersports, walking and fishing, the gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary, the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and Centre of the Universe. Just east of Elk/Beaver Lake Park is the seaside neighbourhood of Cordova Bay, valued for its rural beauty and unparalleled views of Haro Strait and the San Juan Islands. Highlights here include a charming collection of shops and galleries called Mattick’s Farm, Cordova Bay and The Ridge golf courses. SAANICH PENINSULA AND SIDNEY The pastoral Saanich Peninsula is home to a number of excellent attractions, including the world-famous Butchart Gardens, Victoria Butterfly Gardens,

Heritage Acres and several wineries. Enjoy good cycling opportunities and pleasant drives throughout the Peninsula. Sidney is a charming seaside town with picturesque marinas, oceanside walking paths and great restaurants, galleries and shops. Sidney attractions include the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre and the BC Aviation Museum. WEST SHORE COMMUNITIES AND SOOKE West of Victoria along Highway 14, discover the communities of View Royal, Highlands, Colwood, Langford, Metchosin and Sooke, which offer a wide variety of outdoor activities. World-class Waterfront in Victoria, BC

With the fewest snowfall days of anywhere in Canada, Victoria boasts the most clear sky summer days of any major city across the nation. Overlooking Victoria’s Inner Harbour, Promontory is Victoria’s tallest tower and is located in what is destined to become a world-class waterfront community. It’s an easy stroll along the seawall to downtown Victoria. Whether it’s a pied-a-terre or expansive living, Promontory has the home you desire. GHALI
