Art lovers of all ages will flock to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Rockland neighbourhood July 21 for the 25th annual TD Art Gallery Paint-in.

Some 150 professional and emerging artists will take their studios to the street to display and create on Moss Street, between Fort Street and Dallas Road. New this year is Paint In the Square, July 16 to 20, from 11am to 4pm. As part of the City of Victoria’s 150 celebrations, the Art Gallery will storm downtown, with five days of Paint-In festivities in Centennial Square, building toward the main event on Moss Street.

Four-time Grammy Award winner Lyle Lovett performs at the Royal Theatre July 11 before hip hop royalty Snoop Dogg brings his West Coast music stylings to the Save-onFoods Memorial Arena July 17. Big Mama! The Willie Mae Thornton Story Before Elvis there was Big Mama Thornton, recording hit songs like Hound Dog and Ball & Chain, years before others made them famous.

This summer, Victoria’s Belfry Theatre hosts Canadian legend Jackie Richardson as Big Mama, whose rocky but joyful life came to an end too early. This soulful revue, July 24 to August 19, pays homage to this extraordinary blues singer, the godmother of rock and roll.

The 26th annual Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival brings some of the world’s best live theatre from around the world to the stages of the Capital Region August 23 to September 2.

The 11-day celebration of live theatre features more than 50 comedy, drama, spoken word and physical theatre shows, plus free special events such as FringeKids Fest in Market Square, a nightly cabaret at the FringeClub, and a pre-fest concert in Centennial Square. “Easy, fun and slightly addictive...this weird and wonderful festival is like nothing you’ve ever experienced before!”

Salt Spring & the Gulf Islands 35-minute ferry trip from Sidney/Swartz Bay A tranquil, island paradise renowned for its relaxed lifestyle, Salt Spring visitors enjoy the island's natural beauty, art galleries, studios, wineries and gift shops. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VICTORIA! It’s been 150 years since the incorporation of the City of Victoria on August 2, 1862, and my what a 150 years it’s been! In celebration of the historic milestone, the City of Victoria has planned a series of events and activities: July 29 – Fort Victoria Family Festival and Fort Building Competition. From 11am to 3pm in Centennial Square, teams will let their creativity run wild as they build their own forts.

Non-builders will enjoy an afternoon of music, historical stories, tours and activity stations.

August 2 – Anniversary day events include a public ceremony at 11am in Centennial Square, then from noon to 6pm, 150Forward Community Celebration is a free, family-friendly

party in the square with costumed performers, refreshments and cake. The mainstage show will entertain with performances showcasing the city’s history and diverse cultures.

Contribute to the time capsule and anniversary greetings, take part in interactive fun, enjoy local cuisine and much more.

August 6 – City United! anniversary celebration and concert, noon to 6pm on the grounds of historic St. Ann’s Academy, steps from the Inner Harbour. Westshore shows & tours welcome art lovers Each summer, the artists and artisans of Metchosin and East Sooke throw open their galleries and studios for the Stinking Fish Summer Studio Tour.

This year, fibre artists, jewellers, potters, painters and printmakers will all welcome visitors from 10am to 5pm August 3 to 12. Why stinking fish? Back in the 1840s, when explorer James Douglas first asked the local First Nations people what they called the area now called Metchosin, they answered “S-met-sho-sun� – literally, “stinking fish,� organizers explain.

Continue your artistic explorations a little further west to the 26th annual Sooke Fine Arts Show, a 10-day celebration of the visual arts that draws some 8,000 art lovers to the coastal town of Sooke July 28 to August 6.

The juried show, hosted at the Seaparc Rec Centre, includes two- and three-dimensional artwork, photography, fibre, jewellery, glass and ceramics, and mixed media.

NEIGHBOURHOODS INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. The Causeway is one of the city’s best people-watching spots. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to great shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the Maritime Museum. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, the Victoria Bug Zoo and Miniature World. Shoppers will love Government Street, Antique Row (Fort Street) and The Bay Centre. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo.
