ventures back to 1958 when abstract painter Mark Rothko was engaged to paint murals for the Seagram Building in New York, the most lucrative commission ever. Langham Court Theatre opens its 2012-13 season October 3 to 20 with the beloved classic 84, Charing Cross Road, adapted from the book

Celebrate with a case of the Blues Celebrate the end of summer by rockin’ and groovin’ to live blues, R&B and more at the 18th annual Vancouver Island Blues Bash! Headliners for the ticketed evening performances include Canada’s blues guitar favorite David Gogo (September 1) and Alligator Records’ blues guitarist Joe Louis Walker (September 2).

Historic Events The Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites throw open their grounds September 11 for the 18th annual English Car Affair in the Park. Return to the site September 24 for the 10th annual Fort Rodd Hill Lantern Tour, an exclusive, after-dark guided tour of the 19th century site. Victoria is a popular destination for ghost hunters and anyone who enjoys a good ghost story. It's the most haunted city in BC and paranormal activities take place year-round, but as Halloween draws near many of the city’s “spirited” attractions offer special programs for the annual Ghosts of Victoria Festival.

Ghostly Walks is Victoria’s classic ghost tour, exploring the haunted alleys and courtyards of Victoria’s Old Town. Until October 18 these popular 90-minute walks begin nightly at 7:30, with extra 9:30 tours on Fridays and Saturdays. Tours start at the Visitor Centre.

Special Halloween tours take place nightly from October 19 to 31 at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30pm in the lobby of the Bedford Regency Hotel (1140 Government St.). No reservations needed. Call 250-384-6698 or check www.discoverthepast.com for details.

Ross Bay Cemetery is a beautiful oceanside Victorian cemetery where phantoms roam. Isabella Ross, once owner of the land, sits forlornly looking out to sea; David Fee, murdered one Christmas Eve, appears as white mist. The Old Cemeteries Society hosts tours each Sunday at 2pm and the annual Ghost Tour is 1 to 3pm October 28. No reservations needed. Call 250-598-8870.

The Maritime Museum is the favourite haunt of Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie, the “hanging judge.” Dominating Bastion Square, many consider it Victoria’s most haunted place. The

museum is open 10am to 5pm daily during September and October, with extended hours to 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in September. Ghost Tours will be held October 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 at 6pm. Call 250-3854222, ext. 113 for reservations.

The Woman in Black is an old-fashioned ghost story that has played to sold out houses in London’s West End for more than two decades! Urban Arts Productions offers it this year at the Maritime Museum from October 18 to November 3 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. See www.urbanartsproductions.com for tickets.

Paranormal Investigations are not ghost tours, but real ghost hunts conducted by a team of mediums. These late night events (10pm to 3am) are held mostly in the dark, with events planned September 22 at St. Ann’s Academy and October 20 at the Maritime Museum.

The grounds (open daily) feature a walled orchard, woodland walk and beautiful Novitiate Garden. The restored chapel is open Thursday to Sunday, 1 to 4pm. Ghost expert John Adams leads Ghost Bustours – two-hour coach tours past Victoria’s most haunted places – October 21, 22, 28, 29 and 30 at 6:30 and 9pm. The Old Cemeteries Society has run these popular tours for 18 years, with a different route and new ghost stories each year. Colwood Haunted Bus Tour with John Adams runs October 4, 5 and 6. The two-hour route will include visits to the Pioneer Cemetery, St. John’s Church, Hatley Castle and “Havenwood.”

Haunted Horse-drawn Trolley Tours venture down dark streets in the most haunted neighbourhood on the West Coast. Victoria Carriage Tours offer daily tours in September and October, but have a special ghost tour at the end of October. Call 250-383-2207 for information and reservations.

From mid-October through October 31, Festival of Fear at Galey Farms includes the Corn Maze of Horror, Crazy Train, Madame Isabella’s and Carnevil, nightly from 6 to 10 pm. Check www. galeyfarms.net or call 250-477-5713 for details.

Haunted Places to Visit on Your Own To explore for ghosts on your own at any time, start downtown in several Old Town shops, such as Rogers Chocolates and Old Morris Tobacconists. Tourism Victoria can also provide names of haunted restaurants, bars, hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Market Square, once the centre of Victoria’s red-light district, is now a restored enclave of heritage shops on trendy Johnson Street. Here the ghost of Charlie Kincaid wanders restlessly where his throat was slit by his girlfriend, Belle Adams, whose ghost often appears, then suddenly vanishes.

The majestic Parliament Buildings have many ghosts, notably Francis Mawson Rattenbury, the architect who designed them in the 1890s.

He was murdered in England by his wife’s lover, but has returned to haunt the building that made him famous. Beneath majestic trees and crumbling tombstones at the Old Burying Ground on Quadra at Meares Street lie 1,300 bodies. The spectres of Adelaide Griffin who died in 1861 and “Soap and Water” Johnson who committed suicide in 1871 often glide among the graves.

Chinatown has many supernatural stories. Its secret tunnels are only myths, but its hauntings are very real. Feel the paranormal energy in Fan Tan Alley as you walk past its abandoned opium dens and gambling halls. The Victoria Golf Course on scenic Beach Drive is haunted

by Doris Gravlin, strangled there by her husband in 1936. She appears as a white figure on the fairways, running quickly toward people and sometimes passing right through cars.

Rattenbury: a life of operatic proportions Other Guys Theatre presents acclaimed tenor Richard Margison in a concert performance of Tobin Stokes’ new chamber opera, Rattenbury, based on the true story of the celebrated architect who designed much of historic Victoria.

Well known for his grand Parliament Buildings and Empress Hotel, Rattenbury’s tumultuous life story is truly operatic in proportion. Chalk one up for fun The Victoria International Chalk Art Festival will make a colourful impression on locals and visitors alike in September.

Beginning September 12, watch as international 3D chalk artist Tracy Lee Stum creates a 26-foot, three-dimensional chalk art drawing at The Bay Centre’s lower level, centre court. Winchester welcomes Plaskett’s Changes Celebrated painter Joseph Plaskett returns to Victoria this fall with concurrent exhibitions at Winchester Galleries Oak Bay (September 8 to 29) and Winchester Galleries Humboldt Valley (September 8 to 29).

Ladret has worked at some of the most wellknown kitchens around Vancouver Island, including the Sooke Harbour House, The Sidney Pier Resort & Spa, and most recently, Gatsby Mansion as executive chef at Royal Roads University.

“We are presenting the best of our region throughout the seasons and are delighted to be featuring many local producers on our menus,” he says.

NEIGHBOURHOODS INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. The Causeway is one of the city’s best people-watching spots. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to great shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the Maritime Museum. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, the Victoria Bug Zoo and Miniature World. Shoppers will love Government Street, Antique Row (Fort Street) and The Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt.

NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. East of downtown, Rockland is a prestigious area of older, stately homes; attractions include Craigdarroch Castle, Government 40

The Last Reef

OLD TOWN / CHINATOWN Just north of Bastion Square and the shops of Government Street is Old Town.

During the Gold Rush in the mid1800s, this area was known as “the other side of the tracks.” Now, Old Town is a popular shopping and dining area. Market Square is the “heart” of Old Town and features a collection of shops and restaurants in restored heritage buildings. Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada. The Gate of Harmonious Interest is a landmark constructed to recognize Chinese immigrants’ participation in establishing the City of Victoria.

SAANICH AND CORDOVA BAY Saanich is a large residential area beginning north of downtown.

Highlights include Mt. Douglas Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views of the city from its drive-to summit, Elk/Beaver Lake Park, a great spot for watersports, walking and fishing,

Glendale Gardens and Woodland, Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary, the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and the Centre of the Universe. SAANICH PENINSULA AND SIDNEY The pastoral Saanich Peninsula is home to a number of excellent attractions, including the worldfamous Butchart Gardens, Victoria Butterfly Gardens, Heritage Acres and several wineries. Enjoy good cycling opportunities and pleasant drives throughout the Peninsula. Sidney is a charming seaside town with picturesque marinas, oceanside walking paths and great restaurants, galleries and shops.

BUTCHART GARDENS Twenty hectares of world-famous gardens that marked 100 years in 2004.

VICTORIA BUTTERFLY GARDENS HONOURED Each year, the editors of Canada’s Where magazines release their top picks for summer’s most anticipated attractions, an honour that here in the provincial capital went to Victoria Butterfly Gardens. Entertaining and educating guests for years at its breathtaking, 12,000-square-foot jungle setting filled with colourful koi, JENNIFER BLYTH PHOTO flowers, flamingoes and thousands of free-flying butterflies, this year, the gardens added a variety of new animals, including many that have come through local rescue organizations to find a special new home.

The gardens also opened year-round for the first time, celebrating with the addition of a night illuminations feature in the month of December.
