WHO IS KING?

W

hen i first heard the reference to King James, I thought people were referring to a version of the Bible, but, I was soon enlightened by avid basketball fans that they were referring to their hero Lebron James, whose exploits on the court were so phenomenal to them, they crowned him King. So, in my ignorance I asked, “what about Michael Jordan?” Of course if looks could kill, I would be long dead at the hands of Lebron’s fans. I personally became critical of James simply because he dared to appropriate the appellation of King; in my humble Caribbean opinion I thought he was more arrogant than talented.

I am here to apologize for that premature assessment - after all, what the hell do I know about basketball? I played cricket, football (soccer), squash and tennis, so it took me a while to warm toward (handball) American football and basketball. Baseball (the American pastime) is in a class by itself, to me, it seems to be a rather awkward knock- off of the game of cricket, with shorter innings and much less excitement. If you spend enough time watching baseball it does provide you an opportunity to pass time.

Lebron James who supported him throughout his trials and tribulations on his quest of redemption. Did Cleveland and its fans really care for Lebron or for themselves? We may never know the answer to that, but we sure know the answer to the question, did Lebron care for Cleveland? He sure did, and he had an incontrovertible way of proving it – he returned and handed them a championship they had never won and a title they had not experienced in 52 years.

Now with three championships under his belt, the peoples King must set his sights on Michael Jordan’s six titles and five MVP awards as well as Michael’s third place 32,292 points, those are daunting stats, and the reality is that Lebron has more competitive miles on his body than Michael did at a similar age. The good news is that no one in the league takes better care of their body than Lebron does, and since Jordan’s era, there have been incredible developments in sports medicine, which dramatically extends the endurance and playing years of athletes. The excitement that Lebron James has created with his Cleveland Cavaliers will soon be eclipsed by his quest to become the only man with the potential to dethrone the legendary Michael Jordan. Can he accomplish this with the Cavs or does he remain right where he is and build his team, like Jordan did with the Bulls? If he does that successfully, then his fans, including myself, will be proud to acclaim; Long Live The King!

If there’s one act that any sports figure can perform to win the hearts of the fans – it must be the act of selflessness and unselfishness, the willingness to sacrifice for the success of the team rather than play for personal glory. It is in this category that Lebron has exemplified himself, not as just another major star, but as I will therefore freely admit that as far as basketball a unifier and team leader. Does that make him is concerned, I am totally unqualified to write King? Many will argue no; not so fast, he is only on the subject with the required gravitas its fans thirty one, he still has to surpass the amazing would expect, or even demand. Beres Hammond Rocks Groovin in the Park

Beres Hammond once again cemented his mark proving to reggae and music lovers around the world that he is indeed the legend of lover’s rock. The more than twenty thousand gathered at the Roy Wilkins Park, in Queens, New York for the recently concluded Groovin in the Park were mesmerized by the soulful singer.

H

its after hits, Beres Hammond could do no wrong as patrons were “grooving in the park” to classics such as One Dance, She Loves Me Now and countless others. The large crowd erupted when Beres asked Tessanne Chin who was in the audience to join him on stage for her version of his infectious hit, Step Aside Now. During the hour-long set, Beres Hammond used his classic Rock Away to pay respects to reggae’s late great singers such as Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, John Holt and Gregory Isaacs.

Tessanne Chin who won season 5 of US talent competition, The Voice was a crowd favorite leading up to the event. Though Chin’s vocals were on point, her overall performance was lukewarm as the massive crowd was at a standstill with umbrellas erected to shield them from the blazing sun. It was a tear-jerking end for Tessanne who was moved to tears after being awarded a proclamation by the city of New York.

As Jamaica celebrated 50 years of rocksteady on Sunday, very fittingly, Toots and the Maytals brought the 1960’s energy to New Yorkers.

Toots Hibbert, the group’s frontman was a ball of energy as patrons danced under the sun to the 1969 Jamaica festival song “Sweet and Dandy”; “Take Me Home Country Road” and the contagious “Bam-Bam” that had the large crowd moving and grooving.

However, the sing-a-long started with Regina Bell who had patrons on top of their voices singing “Make It Like It Was”. Bell, a guest of Peabo Bryson delivered a short set before making way for the California native. Bryson was a real treat. Before handing out red roses to the ladies at the end of his set, Peabo Bryson thrilled the audience with hits such as “Tonight I Celebrate

My Love”, “Can You Stop The Rain”, and “Ain’t Nobody Love Me Better”. Regina Bell later joined Peabo Bryson for the classic, “A Whole New World”.

After much delay, a thin looking Brian McKnight sporting a gray beard entered the stage wearing jeans and a t-shirt. During his delivery of “More Than Wonderful” Brian showcased his vocals that were approved by screaming fans. Time constraints, however, forced the R&B singer to leap into more popular hits such as “Back At One” and “Anytime” as the show had gone beyond its designated lock off time.

Groovin in the Park started at noon with local acts from Queens before Jamaica’s Duane Stephenson graced the stage.

The event’s organizers this year injected a bit of dancehall with the inclusion of Tiger and Johnny P whose short stint was welcomed by the predominantly Caribbean audience.

All in all, despite a few minor glitches, Groovin in the Park 2016 was a tremendous success.
