A Delicious Challenge

Get ready for some unique and delicious desserts. Through Feb. 28, the Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC)’s Dessert Challenge takes place. This delicious event pits 20 esteemed chefs from venues throughout Central and Northern Arizona in a friendly competition to create a winning dessert using either Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils or Lemon-Ups Girl Scout Cookies. The participating chefs use their culinary prowess to re-imagine these classic cookies into a dessert—and then feature it on their menus throughout the month. Stop by OAK on Camelback, The Italian Daughter, The Mick Brasserie, Zuzu at Hotel Valley Ho, Geordie’s at Wrigley Mansion, Lovecraft, Churn, Aioli Gourmet Burgers, Proof Canteen at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale Troon North, Rusconi’s American Kitchen, Nook Kitchen, and Tarbell’s—to name just a few—to try their chef’s creation. A portion of the proceeds supports girl scouting in Arizona. For a full list of participating restaurants, visit www.girlscoutsaz.org.

WHERE NOW

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Chef Lisa Dahl—the renowned chef who pioneered the culinary scene in Northern Arizona’s Sedona—has released her second cookbook, called A Romance With Food. The book captures Dahl’s Latin fusion cooking, and is a tribute to her wide-ranging inspirations from travels in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Uruguay, to her hometown of Sedona. There are 91 recipes, along with colorful narratives, and more than 150 vibrant photos. “I don’t complicate the techniques or use obscure tools or ingredients. You can easily make these recipes using your own home-chef tools, oven, and backyard grill. The book is organized much like a menu, so the home chef can mix-and-match from all the chapters,” explains Dahl, who has appeared on the Travel Channel’s Food Paradise, Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay, and is a two-time featured chef at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City. Recipes range from the Homemade Empanadas to the Glorioso Gazpacho, and the Pescado Paradiso to the Maple-Coconut Flan. Dahl’s restaurants include Mariposa, Cucina Rustica, Pisa Lisa, Butterfly Burger, and Dahl & Di Luca Ristorante Italiano. $45 (hardcover); www.romancewith food.com

you’ve chosen the Valley of the Sun for a romantic getaway this month, you’re in good hands. Climb a mountain for a stunning view of the Valley, indulge at a world-class spa, and toast to breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. Looking for a romantic restaurant? What about some unique date ideas? We’ve got you covered. Get ready to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

A HOT AIR BALLOON FROM RAINBOW RYDERS

There are several restaurants that offer both exquisite cuisine and exquisite views. Perched high above the Valley and adjacent to the historic Wrigley Mansion is Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion (2501 E. Telawa Trail, Phoenix; www.wrigleymansion. com). Here, at this intimate location, James Beard Award-winning chef Christopher serves a stunning tasting menu on Fridays and Saturdays, and a menu of Christopher’s Classics on Tuesdays through Thursdays. The mountaintop restaurant Different Pointe of View (11111 N. 7th St., Phoenix; www.tapatiocliffshilton.com) at Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort offers an innovative, bold menu that is both sophisticated and approachable. Meanwhile, elements at Sanctuary at Camelback Mountain (5700 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley; www.sanctuaryoncamelback.com) allows guests to look out over Paradise Valley while enjoying farm-fresh American cuisine with Asian accents. In Downtown Phoenix, Compass Arizona Grill (122 N. 2nd St., Phoenix; www.compassarizona.com) is

the Valley’s only revolving restaurant. Located on the 24th floor of the Hyatt Regency Phoenix, it offers 360-degree views of the Valley, as well as a menu that showcases seasonal American cuisine that's complemented with Southwest flavorings. Those who prefer to go underground rather than be atop a mountain can head to The Salt Cellar Restaurant (550 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale; www.saltcellarrestaurant.com). A Valley landmark since 1971, guests travel down three flights of an antique wooden stairway to arrive in a snug hideaway. The menu here features fresh fish and seafood selections. At LON’s at The Hermosa Inn (5532 N. Palo Cristi Road, Paradise Valley; www.hermosainn.com), the main restaurant is at ground level (and the patio is stunning); however, there’s also a Wine Cellar that can accommodate 2-12 guests for a private, candlelit dinner. Menu features include selections that are an authentic take on local cuisine. Other romantic spots include Old Town Tortilla Factory (6910 E. Main St., Scottsdale; www.oldtowntortillafactory.com), which offers Southwestern cuisine with a Mexican twist, and which is set in a historic 75-year-old adobe home. It also features a 1,400-square-foot patio complete with green vegetation, sparkling lights, and 100-year-old pecan trees. Sel (7044 E. Main St., Scottsdale; www.selrestaurant.com) is a cozy restaurant run by husband-and-wife team Branden Levine (known for his appearances on the Food Network’s Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell and Beat Bobby Flay) and his wife, May, which offers progressive, beautifully plated American cuisine, served in a candlelit atmosphere. Over at Modern Oysterbar Chophouse (10050 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.modernoysterbarchophouse.com), enjoy prime steaks, fresh oysters and seafood, and seasonal specialties served in a modern setting that showcases rich colors and an upscale atmosphere. On Fridays and Saturdays, live music fills the air. Named one of the top three fine dining restaurants in the nation is Café Monarch (6939 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale; www.cafemonarch. com), a family-owned locale that offers an ever-evolving, prix fixe menu of innovative culinary creations. In Chandler find Kai at Wild Horse Pass (5594 W. Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Chandler; www.wildhorsepass.com), the only AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five Star restaurant in Arizona. The unique menu highlights the creativity and history of Native American culture, and incorporates ingredients farmed by the Gila River Indian Community. Meanwhile, at Scottsdale’s Marcellino Ristorante (7114 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; www.marcellinoristorante.com), you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Italy, from the authentic Italian cuisine—Chef Marcellino is from Italy—to the ambiance. Chef’s wife, Sima Verzino, is a professional singer who performs on Thursdays. At Persian Room Fine Dining (17040 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.persianroom.com)—a Valley staple for over 30 years—find ornate chandeliers, finely carved pillars, water fountains, and an extensive menu of traditional Persian cuisine. f variety is the spice of life, these locales offer the perfect options. Why? Each offers a food or drink flight that allows guests to taste around the menu versus choosing just one sip or bite.

Oink Café

BACON FLIGHT Bacon. Bacon. Who’s got the bacon? That would be Oink Café, which serves eight types of bacon—apple cider, applewood, chef’s choice, hickory, honey, jalapeño, pepper, and sugar cured. While certainly there is an option for just a side, there are also two flight options from which to choose, including an eight-strip flight for $11.49 to sample each of the flavors, as well as a four-strip flight for $6.49 where diners can choose four flavors to taste. 4326 E. Cactus Road, Phoenix; www.oinkcafe.com Hash Kitchen

MIMOSA FLIGHT AND SWEETS FLIGHT The brunch hot spot with locations Valleywide offers a Mimosa Flight for $16 that is as colorful and bright as it is bubbly. It features four mini versions of mimosas in rotating flavors, which includes four to six of the following depending on the day: mango, guava,

strawberry, blueberry, kiwi, watermelon, and traditional orange. For those looking for something more out-of-the-box, they also offer what they call the Ferris Wheel. Newly launched for 2022 and presented on a rotating metal ferris wheel, this sweets flight features vibrant tie-dye cupcakes topped with reflective tinsel and a trio of boozy cereal milk pudding shooters. One note: Given that the shooters are spiked with spirits, you must be 21 or over “to ride” this ferris wheel. Five Valley locations; www.hashkitchen.com JOJO Coffeehouse

COFFEE FLIGHT, MIMOSA FLIGHT, AND CRAFT BEER FLIGHT For those seeking a caffeinated flight, look to South Scottsdale’s JOJO, which offers a coffee flight for $10 that features small pours of five of its morning options: Nitro JOJO Cold Brew, JOJO Cold Brew, a double espresso shot, a latte, and a caramel macchiato. JOJO also offers a mimosa flight for $25 with peach mint, cranberry lime, orange, apple pie, and pineapple pours, and a craft beer flight with five options for $9. 3712 N. SCOTCH FLIGHTS

Located just off the main lobby inside the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa is its Scotch Library, which features more than 300 scotches— more than 175 single malts, 30 blends, and a number of rare bottles imported directly from Scotland. From open to close seven days a week, scotch ambassadors in the library offer 2 oz. pours—ranging from $12 to $475 per pour depending on the brand—of more than 200 makes and brands. In addition, the Scotch Library has regular tasting events, wherein they bring in a renowned brand and offer a tasting of its portfolio of scotches, paired with small bites, for $65. 6902 E. Greenway Pkwy., Scottsdale; www.kierlandresort.com Fairmont Scottsdale Princess

FRIES FLIGHT, TEQUILA FLIGHTS, RUM FLIGHTS, AND WHISKEY FLIGHTS Each of the award-winning main eateries on property—Bourbon Steak, La Hacienda, and Toro Latin Rum Bar—offer flights to fit your fancy. First, at Bourbon Steak, rather than bread and butter service, Freedom Fries are presented tableside. The complimentary Freedom Fry flight, available to any dinner guest, features three sets of duck fat fries: truffle, garlic, and bleu cheese. The fries are complemented by three dipping sauces—truffle aioli, pickled ketchup, and Frank’s

24

Red Hot aioli—so guests can mix-and-match flavor profiles. At La Hacienda, choose from a full menu of tequila flights, which vary in cost. There is also a specialty flight option called Snakebite for $22 that offers a sampling of three agave spirits. And then at Toro, there are both rum and whiskey flights available. Ranging in price from $30 to $60, the flights feature Japanese whiskies, as well as the most beloved rums from across the globe. 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale; www.scottsdaleprincess.com The Mission

TEQUILA FLIGHTS AND MEZCAL FLIGHTS Both Mission locations in Scottsdale offer a variety of tequila and mezcal flights. On the tequila side, there are six flights from which to choose, ranging in price from $32 to $265, with each featuring four pours. As one might expect, there are flights for each of the main styles of tequila—blanco, reposado, and añejo—but there are also three specialty flights featuring ultra-premium and coveted expressions of tequila, as well. For its two mezcal flights, $26 and $59, expect a sampling of more traditional expressions, and then a premium offering. 3815 N. Brown Ave., Scottsdale; 7122 E. FROZEN MARGARITA FLIGHTS, GUACAMOLE FLIGHT, AND SALSA FLIGHT Open since late 2021, this Paradise Valley-area Mexican eatery offers frozen margarita flights. The $18 flight features a rotating selection of four mini frozen margaritas, likely always including its original frozen margarita that’s made with Corazon Blanco, Cointreau, and lime. Other flavors include spicy mango, prickly pear, guava-orange, and seasonal rotating specials. There is also a ferris wheel offering à la Hash Kitchen, but at The Mexicano, it features a flight of three guacamoles and three house-made salsas from which to choose. 4801 E. Cactus Road, Phoenix; www.themexicano.com Huss Brewing Co.

BEER FLIGHTS

Though there are copious beer flights in town, this is one of the best given its flexibility. Quite simply, you are able to build your own flight by picking four 4 oz. pours from anything on draft at its taprooms across the Valley, including its newest location in the heart of Downtown Phoenix. Need something to accompany the creative craft offerings? Try the Schreiner's Sausage + Pretzel Board for $25. Though branded as a board, it absolutely feels like a

sausage flight thanks to its presentation, which includes three Schreiner’s fine sausages—a Haus beer bratwurst, Portuguese lunguica, and cheddar-infused brat—each sliced for ease of sampling and paired with a beer cheese and accouterments ranging from red cabbage to honey mustard. 225 E. Monroe St., Phoenix; 100 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 1520 W. Mineral Road, Tempe; www.hussbrewing.com Postino

BRUSCHETTA FLIGHT The granddaddy of Phoenix-area wine bars is also the innovator of the bruschetta flight. Now a staple at wine bars across Arizona and beyond, they were among the first to take standard bruschetta— most often bread topped with garlic, tomatoes, basil, and perhaps mozzarella—and turn it on its head. Offered since day one and now available at each of Postino’s eight locations statewide, the bruschetta flight (called a board on the menu) is $15.50 and gives guests the choice of four bruschetta options on the menu, each of which is sliced into four portions to ensure guests get a second (and third) bite, even if sharing. The flavors are ample, and locals love nothing more than to advise you on which combinations to order. Multiple Valley locations; www.postinowinecafe.com

rchitect Paolo Soleri (1919-2013) was a pioneer of mid-20th century architecture. He is not only known for Arizona’s Arcosanti—his experimental community intended to be an experiment in “arcology” (his philosophy of creating balance between the built and natural environments for the benefit of people and the planet), but for his famous, handmade windbells. Here in Greater Phoenix, there are many examples of Soleri’s work to appreciate. 1 COSANTI

This historic locale in Paradise Valley was Soleri’s “residence, studio, and testing ground for his vision of architecture built according to his arcology philosophy.” Today, the destination—which is open to tour—is the home of Cosanti Originals, makers of the widely
