Essays On Climate Change And Global Warming

A major and controversial topic in the world today is global warming and climate change. Carbon which is one of the bigger contributors to the greenhouse effect, can influence climate change. In its abundance, most of it is stored in the ground within the soil. It is known that respiration, which is the breakdown of molecules into carbon, water, and energy, plays a very large part in the cycling of carbon on the Earth. Understanding how different aspects of our environment can affect the cycling of carbon within soil, we can then apply it to potential changes of climate change and predict what could happen and can set up some pre–emptive measures. Soil organic carbon is converted into its inorganic form due to the metabolism of various decomposers (ie. microbes) in the soil. (Kirschbaum, 1995). We expect the increase of temperature to result in a greater rate of CO2 production. This is because of a positive feedback loop created based on temperature; as temperature increases so does the metabolism of the detritivores which then increases the conversion of organic carbon to inorganic carbon dioxide (Kirschbaum, 1995). This yields more CO2, contributing to the greenhouse effect while also increasing temperature. We expect the treatments at the higher temperature (30В°C) to result in a higher rate of CO2 production, because of the increased metabolic activity of decomposers. In addition to testing temperature, we will test the effects of altering litter composition. Due to

> What is it?

Climate Change is a change in the demographic distribution of weather patterns, and related change in oceans, land surfaces and ice sheets, happening over time scales of decades or longer. It's the world's greatest threat.

Climate change is the change in temperature over a period of time. It involves the greenhouse effect and global warming.

> Where is it?

It is an issue affecting everyone everywhere

Climate change exists within the Earth's atmosphere, where temperatures are slowly rising.

The Top Ten places affected the most by Climate Change are generally countries with a struggling economy. Uganda, The Alps, The Northwest Passage, Washington D.C, Island Nations, The Great Barrier Reef, Northern Europe, Italy, The Gulf Coast and Darfur.

> Why is it there?

Climate Change is there/happening because greenhouse gas emissions have improved the greenhouse effect and caused Earth's temperature to grow.– Carbon emissions

(What is a greenhouse GAS? – a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation. Carbon dioxide is an example of a greenhouse gas.)

Climate change occurs on the Earth due to the greenhouse gas effect where greenhouse gases trap the Earth's radiant heat energy and some heat is absorbed into the atmosphere. Climate change also occurs on Earth due to global warming and the increase of temperature from the level of carbon

Climate Change: It's in Our Hands

Climate change; the two words that have sparked controversy across the media in recent decades, has been highlighted as one of the greatest environmental threat to humanity in the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). With the current warming of the climate considered as "unequivocal", the report has brought back the issue of climate change and global warming to the forefront of public and political debate, asking the question: is climate change real and should we really care?

The scientific evidence supporting the rapid change in the climate is substantial and compelling. Technological advances, particularly with satellites, have enabled scientists to begin to understand and track the full extent of the changes. One of the greatest and widely used pieces of evidence is the global temperature rise. There has been a documented rise in temperatures since 1880, with the largest increases occurring since the 1970s. This coincides with the beginning of the industrialisation in more developed countries, including the UK. However, global temperatures aren't the only indicators of global warming. One that poses a great risk to southern areas of the UK, is the rise in sea levels. A rise of 17cm in the last century has been recorded, with more rapid rises predicted. This is in part due to the shrinking of ice sheets and the decline of Arctic sea ice. Greenland has suffered the most, with a loss of 150–250 km3 ice

Global warming and the greenhouse effect are issues discussed by scientists all the time. A natural process that keeps earths temperature at a livable rate is called the greenhouse effect. The energy from the sun warms up the earth when the rays from the sun are absorbed by greenhouse gasses. The gasses then become trapped in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and nitrous oxide are the most common greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gases cause the radiant heat of the sun to be trapped in the Earths lower atmosphere which causes global warming. If there weren't any greenhouse gasses, the earth would be really cold due to very little sun rays being absorbed on the earth. Global warming can and...show more content...

Every time the temperature keeps rising, the more carbon dioxide will be released. When this process gets going, it is very hard to keep in control. Methane is another greenhouse gas. Methane is a greenhouse gas whose molecules absorb heat trying to escape to space. Natural sources include wetlands, swamps and marshes, termites, and oceans. (Methane) Methane gases are released into the atmosphere. Atmospheric methane has doubled since the Industrial Revolution and has "contributed 20 percent to the enhancement of the greenhouse effect, second only to carbon dioxide". (Methane) A major effect of global warming is there will be higher temperatures and it will affect how the water cycle works. Places on the earth will receive more rain than others. There will be a great amount of evaporation going on from the rivers, lakes and oceans due to a increase in the temperature. This could be a good thing for some people needing rain and a bad thing for other people who get to much rain. While the temperature is on the rise there will be greater amount of rains all over. In return with all of the rains this could help farmers. It would extend the growing season for crops. This would greatly help out the farmers because they would be making more money. While this is the positive side of the rain, this could also hurt the farmers. There are some crops that out there that will die with to much rain. There

Taking A Look At Climate Change

This paper will discuss climate change and global warming on the economy. The paper also gives a description on climate change and global warming. As well as what it hold for future business owners. It will also discuss what the government is doing about climate change/global warming. Climate change is a long–term shift in the statistics of the weather (including its averages). For example, it could show up as a change in climate normal (expected average values for temperature and precipitation) for a given place and time of year, from one decade to the next (NOAA, 2007). Global warming refers to the gradual warming of global–average temperatures due to the slowly increasing concentrations of man–made atmospheric greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide. But global warming can alternatively refer to simply the observation of warming (Weatherstreet, 2013). The effects of global warming are already visible in many area of the world. For example, in Montanas Glacier National Park, where about 150 glaciers were once located, only 25 glaciers larger than 25 acres remain, according to the U.S Geological Survey (Bradford. A., 2014). Scientists have expressed confidence that climate change will make hurricanes more intense, as well the unusually strong hurricanes that have formed over the past few years give evidence for this (Bradford. A., 2014). A growing number of business leaders, government officials and private citizens are concerned about global warming and its

The constant exponential increase of atmospheric greenhouse gases emitted by humans from 1750 until now is currently changing planet earth 's climate. These emissions are mainly the cause of fossil fuel use. Because the amount greenhouse gas on a planet determines the amount of infrared radiation being absorbed, the increase of emissions corresponds to rising atmospheric temperatures (Bintanja, Van de Wal, & Oerlemans, 2005). The rate at which these greenhouse gases are being released does not mimic any past natural environmental changes and as ice core drillings suggest there is more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere now that there has been over the last 650,000 years stats (LГјthi, 2008).This dramatic altering of the composition of gases in earth 's atmosphere has adverse effects on all weather systems. This change is called global warming or climate change. The purpose of this paper is to describe the potential outcomes of change in global climate. This paper will first focuses on the impacts of emissions of atmospheric greenhouse and also how an overall warming of the atmosphere will and is changing weather patterns as well as associated ecological factors. It will then describe the effects of sea level rise due to polar ice cap melting and how this will affect human activity and migration. Finally it will look into the ecological effects climate change is and will have on New Zealand. Over the past decade average global temperatures have been increasing Get more content

Global Warming And Climate Change Essay

In today 's world one of the biggest issue faces by all of us is global warming. Global warming refers to an increase in average global temperatures. The main cause of global warming is increasing in the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere due to anthropogenic activities and their level is quantified with the help of global warming potential (GWP) and expressed as carbon footprint. The present study describes the GHG inventory from major sectors including energy, industries, and agriculture and aviation sector and computed the total emissions in terms of carbon footprint using Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines and data of World Bank. The frequently changing pattern of land use and industrial growth in India are essentially responsible for the issues and concerns about environmental risks. In the last two decades in India, the demand for transportation, energy generation, construction of buildings, residential and industrial sector grew significantly. This is contribution to air pollution across the countries (Sharma, 2013). Global warming is an emerging issue due to the extensive spread of greenhouse gases (GHGs) across countries, regions or continents. Fossil Fuels and industrial process are the potent sources of GHGs (Amarendra, 2011). The global GHG emissions from industrial process (includes metal and cement production) and fossil fuel combustion in 2013 is 35300 million tones (Mt) which is increased by 0.7 Gt from 2012.

Climate change is a long–term alteration in the statistical distribution of weather pattern over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. The world is currently experiencing drastic change in temperature. This change can be felt in the tropical climate areas where the weather is getting hotter and hotter every day. The change in global temperatures and precipitation over time is due to natural variability or to human activity. It is also caused by accumulation of greenhouse effects (Arrhenius, 1896). Should we as humans let this problem worsen?Climate change will affect everything including humans, flora and fauna, and the environment.

One of the effects of climate change is how it will affect the people. Climate change will...show more content...

Moderate climate change will likely increase the yields of North American rain fed agriculture. Food production is projected to benefit from a warmer climate, but there probably will be strong regional effects, with some areas in North America suffering significant loss. Other than that, the U.S. Great Plains or Canadian Prairies are expected to be particularly vulnerable. Crops that are currently near climate threshold for example, wine grapes in California are likely to suffer decreases in yields and quality. However, climate change is expected to improve growing conditions for some corps that are limited by length of growing season and temperature. For instance, the fruit production in the Great Lakes region and eastern Canada will have this fortunate effect.

If the climate change problem still persists in the future, all means of transportation will be disrupted. Natural disasters resulting from climate change will disrupt all forms of transport. Natural disasters ranging from heavy downpours, storm surges, sea–level rises to hurricanes can put the transportation industry activities to a complete stop. Airports, roads, rail lines, tunnels and other mediums of transport could suffer severe damage if these natural disasters happen. The transport industry will suffer a major loss financially if these problems should extend to maximum degree. Besides the transport industry, the insurance industry would also suffer financial loss. If one of those natural disasters Get

The global warming is a controversial and debated topic, but it is no surprise to most people. When we think about our future, we only think about our personal life effects and benefits. Global warming is also an important and troubling situation going on the planet earth. Changes in climate can be resulted from both human activities and natural. Human activities involve careless actions and burning fuels. On the other side, natural events cause climate change by volcanic eruptions. Human activities are more responsible because natural events only occur at some percentage and sometimes, but there is no time limit on human events. Today everyone's main concern is how we can stopglobal warming? Global warming is a process of gradual annual temperature increase in the atmosphere by human. Global warming has impacts on climate change, raise sea level, human health. But it can be prevented by strict laws, planting trees, sharing sources, and burning less fossil fuels. Climate change occurs due the gases in our atmosphere. Our environment is made from many gases. Some gases are good for life on earth and some bad such as carbon dioxide, which can observe long wave radiations. Short wave radiation easily gets observed from earth's surface. The carbon dioxide with long wave radiations stays in the earth's atmosphere and makes earth's temperature warmer. Life on earth depends on energy coming from the sun. About half the light reaching Earth's atmosphere passes through the air and

Have you ever taken a swim in the pool on a hot December day. The odds are probably slim, however if we continue to emit greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere we might see this as a new normal. Global warming and climate change has the potential to be a serious issue in the world today. Global warming is a global temperature rise. With the ice caps melting many animals are going extinct or having to adapt to different places of the world. Leaders of the world are also starting to realize that global warming is starting to lead to climate change. Climate change is classified when average temperatures raise 2 degrees. Climate change is an effect of global warming. Greenhouse gasses are raising temperatures temperatures.

"Greenhouse gasses include– carbon dioxide, methane, nitro–us oxide, ozone. these gasses have a serious effect on the environment and heat up the atmosphere rapidly. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenhouse_gas)

Greenhouse gasses are emitted through cars, pollution, and factories. The gasses trap heat the sun gives off, causing global temperature to rise. Greenhouse gasses are also destroying the ozone layer. The ozone layer protects the Earth from the suns harmful U.V rays.

Climate change is an after effect of global warming poses a serious threat worldwide. With animals dying, sea levels rising, and areas of the world changing, we need to find ways to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses we emit into the atmosphere. We also need to find ways to use

Climatic changes have been a major concern in the recent researches. The changes have negatively affected the production across the world and also the human lives are at stake. There are so many occurrences of unpredicted climatic effects such as the drought occurrences and the tides which affects the people. The unpredicted climatic changes have been as a result of the many factors. One of the most controversial things is that climatic changes have been caused by the social factors, which government takes number one responsible for it pros and cons. Climatic changes is therefore attributable to certain sociological perspectives. The question is, are human activities causing climate change? Should government promote different social contexts of what actions should be made?

Global warming and climate changes are two of the biggest problems we face today. The temperature of the Earth is rising and the climate is changing. Although the climate has been changing throughout Earth's history, the issues we are experiencing now are most likely human induced. The main cause of global warming is due to the "human expansion of the greenhouse effect" which is "warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space" (Patz, J. & Holloway T, 2005). The effects of climate change are already having effects on the environment, such as "shrinking glaciers, earlier flowering of trees, and the shift of plant and animal ranges". Most of these effects are what Get more content

CLIMATE CHANGE

Global Warming, much of what does or does not happen forty years from now rests on our actions or inactions taken between now and then. The crucial question is whether we should pour all our resources into mitigation – reducing our carbon emissions. According to scientists who study the climate there are other environmental problems; "we now face a global crises in land use and agriculture that could undermine the health, security, and sustainability of our civilization". Rather than worry too much about emissions, we should accept the world is going to get warmer anyway and adapt to global warming by building better flood defenses and developing drought resistant crops.

We cannot dispute that automobiles, factories, and power plants, displace an unprecedented twenty tons of carbon monoxide– per person – per year. There needs to be a reduction in emissions, yet we cannot focus on this aspect of global warming alone. There are many indicators that climatic change is influencing the frequency and intensity of natural catastrophes. If scientific global climate models are accurate, the present problems will be magnified in the near future.

Already scientists have observed that more than 75% of the recent economic losses are caused by natural hazards which can be attributed to wind storms, floods, droughts and other climate related hazards. In the year 2008, the U.S. state of Iowa was on the front pages of newspapers all around the world.

Though gasoline cars make lives of humans easier to travel, it threatens the environment. Climate is defined as weather conditions existing in a particular area over a period of time. When changes in weather patterns start to occur, this is called climate change. Peter Singer describes carbon emissions would extinguish human life. Climate change is a disastrous event because there is a wide range of environmental impacts affecting life expectancy. In different geographical areas, climates will change if temperatures influence them to fluctuate. The major cause of climate change is human expansion of the greenhouse effect. Kolbert presents scientific research about climate change and global warming leading to a global catastrophe. Any process that causes the Earth's temperature to become imbalanced affects the climate. While climate change is a natural process, purchasing a SUV and doing human activities of all kinds has impacted on the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels for energy. Climate change is a global issue that has and will affect the world. Peter Singer believes greenhouse gas emissions ultimately lead to global warming that will kill a lot of people. The effects ofcarbon dioxide in the atmosphere increasing each year is devastating news to humans and animals because it affects future generations. Studies show climate change is already affecting everyone worldwide and continues to do so.

Climate Change and Global Warming Global warming is a phenomenon that has been happening for many years even before the industrial age. However humans have sped up this process by adding CO2 to the environment through things like factories and cars. There are many who believe that global warming is a hoax but it is in fact very real and affecting our planet. Global warming is defined as a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth 's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. These pollutants first made their debut during the industrial revolution and have been polluting the Earth ever since. In other words, we have been sending pollutants into the air for just about 250 years. The reason that these pollutants make the Earth hotter is because of something called the greenhouse effect. Normally the radiation from the Sun would bounce off the Earth and head back into space, however, CO2 pollutants and other greenhouse gasses trap this heat and make the Earth hotter. These gasses can last in the air from decades to centuries, trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere over the years. According to climatologists the temperature of the Earth has risen between .4 and .8 degrees Celsius. Scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate say that by 2100 global temperatures could rise by as much as 5.8

The Earth has always been undergoing climate change. Extreme weather, natural disasters, and global warming are a few examples of current climate changes. To help prevent this, theClimate Change Education act was introduced by Ed Markey, a democrat from Massachusetts. The main goal of this act was to educate the citizens about the causes of climate change, solutions to it, and small adjustments in their own lives to help prevent it. While there are people who totally support this, there are others who do not. The Climate Change Education act can be seen as helpful because it can protect the Earth and its inhabitants, yet it can be unnecessary because it will not contribute to our society. People believe that this law should be passed for a few different reasons. The first being that it will help prevent global warming. Global warming is the heating of the Earth's atmosphere which can be very harmful to the environment and the inhabitants. One way the Earth is put at risk due to global warming is the effect of the rise in sea levels. In the last century, the sea level rose about seventeen centimeters (Shaftel, 2016). This rise of sea levels, caused by the melting of polar ice caps due to the extra heat, can cause stronger storms, additional rainfall, and flooding. As people learn more about these

Global warming and climate change threaten the very existence of mankind; understanding the affects of each and implementing measures to save this planet are of dire urgency. Global warming has become a threat to everything and everyone on Earth. Global warming is caused by many natural and manmade processes that continue to affect our environment. The release of carbon dioxide and methane gases are the two main contributors to climate change. With the warming of the environment almost inevitable now, methane gases are sure to become an even bigger contributor as the planet warms and the ice melts at the poles. With global warming and the burning of fossil fuels this is putting more carbon dioxide and methane gases into the atmosphere and is preventing the normal reflection of the sun's rays from being reflected back into space because these gases trap the suns heat within. This trapping, coupled with global temperature rise are causing the extreme climate changes that are remapping our planet. Climate change can be defined as significant change in the global climates over relatively short periods of time. Other than the natural release of carbon dioxide, there is a significant increase in carbon dioxide and methane being released caused by the actions of man. (EcoBridge, n.d.). There are many causes as to why man has accelerated the natural carbon dioxide process and one that cannot be easily reversed without extreme measures being implemented with our current way of life. Carbon dioxide emissions stem from the burning of fossil fuels for electricity. Also, Carbon dioxide emissions produced by the use of cars and trucks account for about approximately one third of carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. alone. (EcoBridge, n.d.). The burning of fossil fuels such as coal are the greatest contributors of carbon dioxide emissions among energy producing processes. Coal facilities release tons of carbon into the atmosphere every day. Cars/trucks vary in the amount of carbon dioxide they release from one car to the next.

Climate Change And Global Warming

Earth is one of the most intriguing planets in our galaxy and especially in our universe. This planet is able to bear and sustain life on its surface and also has one of the most important compounds in the universe H2O. Earth has an abundant amount of water on its surface; making it the primary reason why life can survive. However, we humans that live on this planet are destroying it bit by bit. As human population continue to rise, the demand for fossil fuels also increases. The continuous use of fossil fuels has resulted in global warming and also pollution. Hydrocarbons when burned release CO2 into the atmosphere; in turn too much CO2 in the atmosphere heats up the planet. Global warming is slowly changing the earth's climate at an alarming rate. Earth's global temperature has risen 0.6 degrees Celsius since the 1900's (Ahrens, 388). This steady increase in temperature has drastic effects on the hydrological, ecological, political, and economical systems all around the world. The issue of climate change and global warming isn't centered on one nation or group; it is centered on all the nations around the world. So it is important to every citizen living on this planet. The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential effects of climate change will have on the ocean, agriculture, eco–systems, increasing global population, and geopolitical systems.

By climatologists' evidence there are two causes with several factors that have a response for the Earth's climate. They are: human activity which includes deforestation, burning fossil fuels, agriculture, transportation and infrastructure, and natural causes which include volcanic eruptions and variations in solar output. (Pidwirny. 2006).

Human activity affects on greenhouse gases, which has negative consequences on many things. Currently the concentration of greenhouse gases increases. Carbon dioxide(CO2 ), nitrous oxide(N2O), sulfur dioxide(SO2) and methane(CH4) are the main greenhouse gases (Berrou et al. 2010, 217). Agriculture and energy activities make the concentration of methane to rise. Land use changes, agriculture and industrial process influence on nitrous oxide concentration. Agriculture, deforestation and burning of fossil fuels for energy affect on the concentration of carbon dioxide. Coal burning, power stations and burning of biomass emit sulfur dioxide (Carter 2000, 34). All of these greenhouse gases have dramatically increased because of the industrial revolution which took the last 200 years (Carter 2000, 34).

Comparing with other gases carbon dioxide is more responsible for the greenhouse effect (Pidwirny. 2006). Carbon dioxide is emitted from such processes like deforestation, the burning of coal, oil, gas, and through the carbon cycle. One more important greenhouse gas is methane. Get

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1General

Climate change and global warming has been warned to no longer be viewed lightly. These changes are considered to be one of the biggest threats that being faced by nature and humanity today. According to the United Nations Framework Convention onClimate Change (UNFCCC), climate change can be defined as the changes of climate which is attributed either directly or indirectly towards human activities which also able to change the composition of the global atmosphere. As an addition to this matter, the natural climate changes seemed to change over comparable period of time.

Generally, Malaysia might be one of the lucky countries that do not experience extensive damages due to extreme climate changes. However, mild climate related disasters are quite frequent to happen lately. These refer to occurrence of landslides due to excessive rainfall and strong winds happened at the hilly and the latter, at the coastal areas causing severe damage (MET, 2010).

Environmentally, climate change in Malaysia means increase in total heavy rain falls, rising mean sea level and possibly extremeweather. Extreme weather can be fierce and destructive. According to the fifth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, if greenhouse gas emissions are reduced significantly, the rise in global temperature will be about 2Вє C towards the end of century. However, if no action should be taken due to this matter, the temperature might increase up
