EDITOR’S NOTE

Another three months have gone by and this time more than ever, I must admit, they went by in a flash! It’s been a wheelspinning roller coaster during which my two worlds mingled together like strawberry and cream. A time where anything less that 500bhp from my inner engine would not have sufficed!! Ahhh.. I’m still not done with going at that speed but when I look at the result achieved, even amongst the pages of this issue, I cannot but be pleased! The Wheelspin team has certainly outdone itself and I cannot thank enough all those contributing for the energy put into their work.

CONTRIBUTORS Pierre Vella Gerald Fenech Mark Attard Jan Karl Farrugia

Yes, it’s been a busy few months and our team has been travelling once again to personally attend the launches of the newest cars to hit the international markets. The Geneva Motor Show has kept us very busy, as many who have been following our features on the TV programme may have realised. The Formula One season is also in full swing and who but the King of F1 to bring us the best info about the start of the F1 season? But Pierre has not limited himself to just road cars and race cars on this issue. He has also looked into his other passion, aviation, to bring us a pictorial article

The local scene hasn’t escaped us though. Most of us (and I say most so as not to offend our international subscribed readers) still live in Malta were the motoring world effects our daily lives, so Gerald has looked into the popularity of the

Dear Fleur, I like to thank you for this luxury magazine. It is very professional and more than interesting magazine which leaves me waiting for the next issue every time. The car showing this technology was transparent on the Subaru stand and different in shape to the Toyota FT 86 II concept yet it was very clear, and rightly so, that the brand is proud of this collaboration, and of course, of their new technology presented for the first time in Geneva. launches Striking Kia Sportage

The latest car from KIA to arrive in Malta is the new Kia Sportage, a much awaited vehicle by many SUV lovers. The launch event was held at the Kia Showroom in Qormi. Matthew Fenech for Kia Malta Ltd gave some information about this new model whilst 2 models were unveiled to the joy of the media and guests present. A third vehicle was also driven into the showroom then and within seconds each of the vehicles was surrounded by people wishing to get a closer glimpse. The Sportage has been given a beautiful new image. The chrome framed front grille is utterly eye catching, the sloping roofline from front to back and the side lines give it a distinguished profile while the interior of the vehicles has also been drastically improved. The Kia Sportage may be seen at the Kia Showroom in Qormi.

The Classy Utility vehicle is a Korando

It has been a while since we’ve heard about SsangYong, the longest-lived automotive brand in Korea and any new vehicle from this brand, but now here it is in Malta, the New SsangYong Korando. This is the 4th generation model which has been developed as SYMC’s global strategic model. The new Korando is SsangYong’s first ever front wheel drive monocoque-typed SUV and it has been designed as a premium vehicle offering robustness and style. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the car has been designed to attract the high end European market. The vehicle offers a number of safety features including 6 airbag, ESP, and automotive active headrests. The e-XDi200 engine produces 181 bhp with CO2 emissions being as low as 153g/km.

The car may be viewed at Michael Attard Ltd, in National Road, Blata L-Bajda. Price starts from €28,800

Recently Muscats Motors introduced in Malta its latest vehicle from Citroen, the new Citroen C4. The official launch was held at the Radisson Blu Resort Hotel & Spa during which a presentation was made by Grazielle Camilleri for Muscats Motors. After the unveiling, the media present was treated to lunch but the best was yet to come as the cars were available to those who wanted to try them out after. The New Citroen C4 is a beautifully sculptured vehicle with attractive defined lines. This new C4 is slightly larger than the previous model, classy yet aggressive with a more distinctive grille and a very attractive profile. The interior of the vehicle is elegant yet young, attractive and sporty. The car may be personalised with even the instrument display having the option of changing in colour according to the colour choice of the driver. The model we tried out was the 1.4 petrol with start/stop function. Even with this small engine this car is extremely agile and responsive with very good handling and quite a sporty drive. Specifications include air conditioning, alloy wheels, 4 airbags, ESP and some new and useful technologies which make his car different to some others in the same segment. Pity we couldn’t drive it for longer than half an hour! The Citroen C4 may be seen at the Citroen showroom in Rue D’Argens, Gzira. Prices for the 1.4 petrol model start at €16,990

What about the rest however? For sure Lotus Renault will keep the pressure on. A car that is destined to claim a win this year with podium finishes for the re-branded team with the only sore point being Robert Kubica. This should have been his year! Determined, prepared after a few years gearing up for the definite challenge yet unfortunately Robert’s challenge is that of getting back on the track after his horrendous rally accident. No one can predict the future but for sure Robert should have been there driving for the wins.

Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov are stunning the competition with a revamped and original car. The team based in Enstone always produced some stunning developments and their outside facing exhaust from the side pods has created head turners. The lower teams with Team Lotus, Marussia Virgin and HRT are still struggling at the back of the pack. A bit of a disappointment for Team Lotus with two experienced drivers Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen, still unable to get away from the back runners. Unfortunately Frank William’s team also seems to be running with these backmarkers with a revolutionised gearbox being the smallest in the series yet still giving problems. Finally, a well done to the new rookies who are showing a sense of professionalism in their driving! No learning curve but they are ready for the competition and are also point scorers with Brit Paul de Resta. This is looking good for all Formula 1 followers.

Motoring Fund Raising Event for Inspire For the 4th consecutive year the Malta Drag Racing Association, Motordrome and Deejay Banana with the support of the Malta MotorSport Federation and Malta Drifting Association organised the MDRA for Inspire at the Hal Far Tracks on the 31st March 2011. This event is always a popular one amongst car enthusiasts and this year was no different. Several classic and modified car owners chose to display their vehicles at this event whilst many were the drivers enjoying drifting, drag racing, motorcross racing and karting. Minimoto and also Scooter races were also a much followed part of the event. For the first time, the organisers chose to include an Air Show by Island Microlight Club which also had a lot of the people present entertained. The Wheelspin team was glad to be present on the day and we take this opportunity to say ‘well done’ to all the organisers and especially to our colleague Deejay Banana for organising yet another successful event and all for a good cause!
