It is a must that I start this note with a big ‘Thank You’ to all those who, since the launch of Wheelspin Magazine, have contacted us to pass on their congratulations and best wishes for the 1st issue of Wheelspin. Many were those who have called or sent emails or even stopped me when in public places to congratulate the team and to each and every one of these people I would like to show our appreciation. The support received after just the first issue is what we needed to continue with our efforts to bring to all car lovers a high quality magazine and also a TV production of the highest standards. Once again Thank you. This last year had been ultra tough for the motoring Industry globally however, locally the registration tax issue took too long to be decided and this made the situation even tougher in Malta. Now with this decision taken, we look forward to seeing the industry back on its feet whilst drivers are given the opportunity to purchase a choice of new vehicles at slightly better prices as, after all, our European counterparts have been doing in a long while. In this issue we look at this new legislation and see its effect on new and old car owners. Must we really change the cars we were driving until a few months ago? The Wheelspin team has continued its travels to bring you the latest vehicles soon as they are launched and on this issue we look at the cars presented in Los Angeles and Bologna and we also try out the new BMW 3 series in Munich before it even reached our shores. In 2008 I had the opportunity to drive the BMW 1 series convertible in Valencia and fell in love with it! Driving a new car every week very often makes one forget the previous cars driven but not this time and so the BMW 1 series convertible will be available to us for a long term test drive and does this make me smile!! Car lovers in Malta are numerous and so are motorcycle lovers so on this issue we’re also dedicating space to these other beautiful wheels which are a thrill to so many. Enjoy the read and together let’s go Miles Ahead…..

Citroen

- brace yourself for more innovation

6

WHEELSPIN

The innovative and now legendary motoring brand Citroen is currently pretty well poised to capture further market share in 2009 notwithstanding the rather gloomy predictions for the auto market. All this comes in the wake of a host of awards received by the company in 2008 and with redesigns of four of its models as well as the spanking new C5, Citroen is probably the most talked about brand of the moment. This reputation has certainly not come out of nothing as the various accolades awarded to Citroen can safely demonstrate. In this year the ever popular C3 model was named family car of the year, whilst the prestigious Top Gear award went to the Berlingo Multispace which was named ‘MPV of the Year’ in both the 4x4 & MPV Driver magazine’s 2009 awards. But that was definitely not all as the exciting and innovative Hypnos concept car was named ‘Best Concept Car’ in Driver magazine’s 2009 award as well as Autocar Magazine’s awards. Additionally, one of the car’s interior designers, Briton, Leighanne Earley, was also named ‘Autocar Courland Automotive Leader of the Future’, surely a prestigious and much coveted title.

The C1’s exterior has been given a smart upgrade with changes to the car’s front end, complementing the looks of the recently updated C2. There are new wheels and trims whilst inside there are new upholstery and materials. Improving the car’s class-topping environmental and economical credentials, the nippy 1.0i 68hp petrol engine is now the lowest CO2 emitting petrol powered car currently on sale in the UK, boasting lowered CO2 emissions of just 106g/km (-2.7%), and a combinedcycle fuel consumption figure of 62.8mpg (+2.1%). This upgrade means that, in just a few months, Citroën has either revised or completely renewed the C1, C2, C4, C5 as well as the Berlingo Multispace. The new look C1 is set to go on sale early in 2009 when further details and prices will be announced. So with a market that is constantly giving noises of recession, Citroen is looking forward with confidence and dare I say it, class. With extremely reasonable pricing even for top class models such as the lovely C5 and extremely low emissions as well as remarkable fuel efficiency, Citroen is poised to become an even bigger success in 2009.

“Citroën have also announced the first details of changes to the C1 that will give the chic, ultra-economical city-car new exterior styling, even better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions together with a number of other improvements, including an upgraded interior.”

Los Angeles

&

– two top notch auto shows in an unsteady environment

Bologna by Gerald Fenech

WHEELSPIN

With the international financial situation taking almost all the gloss out of the automobile industry the last two auto shows of last year were certainly not so glum. Los Angeles and Bologna were two of the most awaited events of the year in the industry and it is good to report that 2008 was no exception notwithstanding the rather bleak predictions for car sales this year. Let’s take a look at what happened in each show

LOS ANGELES:

CLASS AND STYLE WITH A TINGE OF GREEN

HOT RODS AND HYBRIDS Ford introduced a modestly retouched Mustang here, updating the pony-car icon as it finally faces competition, from the Dodge Challenger and soon-to-arrive Chevrolet Camaro. The styling of the Ford Fusion midsize sedan has also been freshened, along with the similar Mercury Milan; the Lincoln MKZ was also tweaked. Most notable in this group were the gasoline-electric hybrid versions of the Fusion and Milan, each of which can run up to seven miles on electric power alone, at speeds as fast as 47 miles an hour. Their fuel economy tops out at about 39 m.p.g. in town, which Ford pointed out was about 6 m.p.g. better than the Toyota Camry Hybrid.

GREEN POWER Gasoline and hybrid versions of the restyled Lexus RX — the brand’s best-selling model — will be more powerful for the 2010 model year. A convertible version of the IS, introduced at the Paris Motor Show, was also on display. Another car which definitely has the hots to make the grade is the all electric MINI E, a completely fuel free car which is due to be tested in an innovative concept of leasing this year for the US market.

NO PICTURES, PLEASE The Mazda 3 is one of the best-handling small cars, and after a restyling it is one of the best-looking, too. But only if you see it in person: for some reason, this is not a photogenic vehicle. (In photos, it looks like an economy box at best, and like a smiling emoticon at worst.)

THE ODOR-EATER BMW introduced its new clean-diesel 335d sedan by proclaiming, “Let’s face it, you stunk.” That problem, BMW declared, is now solved with its advanced BluePerformance diesel engines, which are also quiet, don’t smoke and drink only in moderation. 10

BOLOGNA:

MORE CLASS WITH MAZDA AND THE VOLKSWAGEN GOLF TOPPING THE BILL

Mazda Hatchback – following on from LA Mazda has show cased the new Mazda 3 in a world premiere at the Bologna Motor Show. The Mazda3 hatchback follows on from the saloon version that was on show in LA’ The engine line up includes the newly developed 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, recently launched in the new Mazda6, in addition to the existing 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol engines and the popular 1.6-litre turbo diesel. As with the 2010 Mazda 3 sedan, the 2010 Mazda 3 hatchback offers the latest in convenience and luxury options to its prospective buyers including the new 10-speaker BOSE® premium sound system with AudioPilot2® technology. The AudioPilot2 works by increasing or decreasing the in-vehicle audio system to compensate for in-cabin noise created by vehicle speed and other factors.

Volkswagen Golf Plus At the Bologna Motor Show Volkswagen unveiled the new Golf Plus, which adopts styling cues and technical features introduced with the sixth Golf generation. It will go on sale in March 2009. Visually, the new “Plus” forges a link to the classic body style of the just introduced sixth Golf generation. This is especially apparent at the front end. The rear bumper and roof rails were also redesigned. Inside, the further improved Golf Plus sports details like new upholstery materials and details also implemented in the Golf such as the new generation instruments, steering wheel options and the user interface to the automatic climate control system (Climatronic). Among the technical highlights are the 6-speed and 7-speed dual clutch transmissions (DSG), “Adaptive Cruise Control” (ACC), the “Park Assist” parking assistant and a rearview camera. The new common rail TDI engines (66 kW / 90 PS to 103 kW / 140 PS) have reduced fuel consumption by up to 0.8 liters fuel per 100 kilometers.

Scirocco Studio R Volkswagen’s latest design study, the Scirocco Studie R also premiered at Bologna and is inspired by the Scirocco GT24 which raced to success in its class at the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race earlier that same year. Finished in white, the Studie R has contrasting high-gloss black detailing and styling accents in red and green to the wing mirrors and on the ‘Bologna 08’ badging, paying homage to the Show’s host nation. Three large air intakes at the front aid cooling to the uprated 2.0litre 270 PS engine, while a front splitter is designed to minimise lift. The rear is dominated by a large rear wing and a distinctive revised rear bumper which incorporates a diffuser and twin oval exhausts. The Studie R is fitted with racing-derived sports suspension and four-piston brake callipers sit behind specially developed bespoke polished five arm, triple spoke 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside the cabin, the Scirocco Studie R is upholstered with black and white nappa leather and complemented with low- and highgloss carbonfibre trim. The Italian-inspired red and green design accents continue on the seams of the Recaro seats, steering wheel, armrest, gearknob and floor mats. What can I say when faced with such splendid new car models? It looks like although the industry has taken a substantial battering in recent months, the potential is still there for further growth and with the level of models and new trends available, the situation looks very bright indeed. As always, Bologna and LA prove to be good indicators of what one can expect for the forthcoming year and 2008 was definitely no exception. ‘Although the vehicle is on par with the VW Golf it is built significantly lower for a sportier drive’ WHEELSPIN

Test Drive SAAB 9-3 1.8 TURBO AUTOMATIC

Some companies make cars, others make aeroplanes but there’s one that makes both of them! by Fleur Balzan

ñ

It comes from a cold country that we however normally associate contrastingly with hot blondes! Welcome to the world of Saab. The model we have today is the 9-3 saloon with the 1.8T turbo engine developing 150bhp and 240Nm of torque. In actual fact the capacity of this engine is of 1998cc therefore a 2.0L, the same as that of the engine they call 2.0T, hence the 25bhp difference in power between the two is a matter of tuning and turbo boosting. Back to the engine at hand, the 1.8T, with a manual 5-speed gearbox takes the 9-3 to 100km in 9.5 seconds; with the 5-speed automatic like the one we have here, this becomes 10.7 making it a difference worth considering which cog box to go for! Consumption is quoted at 7.5L per 100km for the manual and 8.5L for the auto. Similarly CO2 emissions stand at 178 and 205 g/km respectively. If cruising around in comfort is your prerogative it’s well suited, but if you want better punch stick to the manual, or keep the auto in sport mode, or opt for the 2.0T immediately. In sport mode the gearbox is willing to kick down a gear WHEELSPIN

13

instantly to provide that shove but it will never make you require physio treatment should you do this more often. Of course the ultra comfortable and supportive seats are also to blame for this. Evidently Saab’s aircraft experience doesn’t just lie with its turbines but also the seats! The cabin of the 9-3 is welcoming in a simple and functional way, yet with particular styling cues such as the handbrake that camouflages when down to match the grabhandle symmetrically on the passenger side. Typical Saab, the ignition lies comfortably bang in the middle of the console, making me wonder who was the dummy that started putting them hidden on the side of the steering wheel columns in the first place! All controls are located where they should be and the stereo is right there close to your line of vision and controlled from the steering wheel too. The dual zone climate control switches are very intuitive to use and above them there’s a trick cup holder which I’m sure you’d stay opening and closing for a while simply to see the cool way in which it transforms to hide and reveal itself with one finger press. The car handles with a certain finesse that is never dramatic. Admittedly, this engine and gearbox combination never imposes high demands on the 9-3’s chassis which 14

WHEELSPIN

“The turbo on this engine is a mild one but nevertheless well needed to give that smile, albeit little, on your face when you ask for it with your right foot” is actually made to cope with considerably higher powered units. Turn in is sharp, body roll well controlled, and there’s a fair amount of feel through the steering wheel and seat. All in all, the car is screwed together just like they screw their aircraft, solid and functionally safe. The styling is sedately elegant but not dramatic with the exception of the rear light clusters with that full transparent white look. The front ones then have a beautiful design incorporating a linear led side light which gives it a very sporty and aggressive look when on. The Saab 9-3 is a car that should be more considered by the general public when shopping for a family saloon; it provides a worthy different alternative to the usual suspects within this market.

Feel the difference

by Gerald Fenech

With fuel costs on everyone’s mind at the moment and with the new circulation tax also including a hefty increase for gas guzzling vehicles, the need for a car with green credentials has come all the more into focus. Wheelspin takes a look at the top cars which are environmentally friendly and which have also gone down considerably in price for the year ahead (except, astonishingly some hybrid vehicles) but most importantly will save you considerable dosh on your fuel bill.

Honda Civic GX The Civic GX comes in as the Wheelspin’s greenest car, largely due to the fact it runs on natural gas, which gives off fewer smogproducing pollutants and greenhouse gases than gasoline-powered cars. The Civic GX uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway (obviously not really applicable for Malta).

Toyota Prius The grandfather of hybrid cars, the Prius uses a parallel electric powertrain to recycle kinetic energy that would otherwise be wasted, turning it back into motive energy for the car. It can drive under electric power alone at low speeds, or use its 1.5-liter fourcylinder engine. The Prius is rated at 48 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway.

Smart by Mercedes The Smart ForTwo makes its first appearance on this list and its evident popularity locally is there for all to see with large numbers of these cute vehicles slowly but surely filling our roads. It scores for its very economical 1-liter engine and electronic clutch transmission, giving it 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

Toyota Yaris

Mini Cooper/Clubman

The Yaris makes the green list for its exceptional fuel economy, as its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine doesn’t use advanced technology beyond variable valve timing and efficient tuning. This tuning gives it 29 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Toyota’s new Aygo is smaller and also very fuel efficient.

The Mini’s appearance on this list shows that green doesn’t have to equal boring, although this is the standard Cooper and not the turbocharged S version. The Cooper and the Cooper Clubman are powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, getting 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, surely great value for such a trendy car.

Nissan Hybrid

Ford Focus

Nissan’s first hybrid makes use of a system based on Toyota’s hybrid technology, with a parallel electric powertrain. This system is paired with a larger gas engine than many other cars on this list, a 2.5-liter four cylinder. But even with this big engine, it still pulls in mileage numbers of 35 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

Ford offers the only car from a U.S. company to make it on the list. The Focus runs an efficient 2-liter four-cylinder engine, giving it 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. But more impressively, its smog-producing emissions are so low that it makes it right up there with the very best of environmentally friendly cars.

Toyota Corolla

Honda Jazz

The Corolla is another car that makes it on the greenest list, due to its efficient engine rather than any use of advanced technology. The Corolla’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine gets an EPA-rated 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway and with ultra low fuel emissions it surely makes the grade.

Honda rounds out the greenest cars list with its smallest car, the Jazz. This standard gasoline-fueled car uses a 1.5-liter fourcylinder engine to get 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Other new cars by famed brands such as Renault, Citroen, Volkswagen and Peugeot are also fast catching up with low emission engines that are significantly less harmful to the environment than what used to be produced before. However as we can observe from this list, Japanese vehicles are still the king when it comes to fuel efficient and hybrid technology with extremely low emissions. WHEELSPIN

Luxury to extreme Malta has the pleasure to welcome the latest model of the BMW 7 series, a car which gives a new significance to the word luxury. This is the 5th generation of the BMW 7 series and the brand has continued to show that it can improve on a practically perfect vehicle. The BMW 7 series comes in three engine variants, the BMW 750i, the BMW 740i and the 730d, which is the one shown for viewing during the launch. These come in additional body variants shown as BMW 750Li and BMW 740Li with an extended wheelsbase of 140mm with particular focus being given to extra comfort in the rear.

Two new models for Mitsubishi November saw the introduction of the new legislation on all vehicles and with it we saw the launch of various new models with Mitsubishi launching two of its models in one event. The launch was held at the Industrial Motors Showroom and it was Managing Director Ian Mizzi to introduce the new Colt and new Lancer. The new Colt is a 3 or 5 door compact vehicle with a strong, sharp design featuring a distinctive front grill and new headlights. The car is available in a 1.1 litre engine offering 75bhp The Mitsubishi Lancer is a muscular sports sedan which is said to offer a great driving experience. The car is designed to resist the toughest environment with a strong structure which however doesn’t sacrifice the appeal of the vehicle. Besides being robust yet sleek, the lancer has a spacious cabin with enough room to accommodate 5 adults in comfort whilst the boot is also extremely spacious. The new Lancer is available in a 1.5 litre engine.

The new VW Scirocco, the 3rd generation of this popular VW two door coupe, has finally made it to our shores in late October. We had been lucky enough to have already seen this model in close up for its world launch in Geneva last March and yet the striking style of this vehicle makes one want to keep looking at it every time you spot it. The first two generations of the Scirocco were very successful for the brand with over 800,000 units sold and it is predicted that the 3rd generation will be just as successful. The model had originally replaced the aging ‘Karmann Ghia’ coupe and the 1st and 2nd generation were in production between 1974 and 1992. The new VW Scirocco is a striking, dynamic, sporty vehicle with a front end design that introduces the new era for VW. It features the latest technology such as DCC adaptive chassis control and the new 7 speed DSG dual clutch transmission. Adaptive chassis control offers the three programs “Normal”, “Sport” and “Comfort” and it is said to improve the driving characteristics of the vehicle tremendously.

The Scirocco is a muscular vehicle with an efficient turbo engine. It is available in a choice of 3 petrol engines and one TDI engine with the petrol delivering 120, 158 or 145bhp and the TDI delivering 140bhp. Although the vehicle is on par with the VW Golf it is built significantly lower for a sportier drive yet, although it seats only four people, it is nearly as wide as the larger VW Passat sedan. With 4 people on board, the Scirocco offers 292 litres of cargo space with this increasing to 755 litres if the seats are folded down. A panoramic glass roof is also available. This extends from the A-Pillars to the B-Pillars with the glass reflecting 99 percent of UV radiation, 97 percent of infrared radiation and 80 percent of visible light, VW Scirocco, a sports car that turns heads! Europe comes out strong on CO2 emissions from cars

North American Motor Show, new models unveiled

The European parliament has passed what is considered to be a tough legislation that states that the average car CO2 emissions has to be cut to 130g/km by 2015. The plan allows a staggering approach to cutting emissions from all new cars by 65% to average the 130g/km target by 2012, 75% by 2013 and 80% by 2014. Manufacturers who exceed targets will face hefty fines.

BMW 3 series

The Ford Ka has finally made it to our shores. Straight from the James Bond movie ‘Quantum of Solace’ the Ford Ka was introduced in Malta by Gasan Enterprises Managing Director David Gasan together with Glen Warren.

Last September we attended the media launch of the new BMW 3 series which was held on the outskirts of Munich. During this occasion we had the opportunity to try out the new 335i and the 320d engines during several hours of pleasant driving. The new BMW 3 series has since arrived in Malta and the launching was held in conjunction with another event held at the Royal Malta Yacht Club. The BMW 3 series has been the most sold vehicle in the world from the premium vehicle segment and it is expected that this new model will remain loyal to this success. The new model features several changes to both the looks and the interior comfort of the vehicle yet the most important changes were made to the technology which now incorporates the BMW iDrive and the BMW Connect Drive. The new BMW 3 series comes in a choice of 5 petrol and 5 diesel engines which is sure to make this car even more desirable.

This is a small, colourful vehicle which has had a complete make over from the previous model. What remains is the individuality of this small car which comes with a choice of options which actually allows one to have a ‘different’ car from the Ford Ka owner next door. The Ford Ka is also very clean on the environment which is expected to increase its appeal on many

Citroen Relay Mini Bus

Italian elegance and style

The last year has seen Citroen introducing several new models and besides the various smaller sized vehicles, we have also seen the arrival of yet another commercial vehicle for this company. Muscats Motors have launched the new Citroen Relay Mini Bus and to mark this special occasion Mr Marcandre Biehler, regional manager to Citroen, was invited to attend the final launch event which was held at the Citroen Showrooms. The new models of the Citroen Relay mini bus are available in 14 and 17 seats with a choice of three direct injection turbo diesel engines.

It is not often that we get to see in Malta a limited edition vehicle. That is until recently when Alfa Romeo and UCIM Co Ltd had given the general public the opportunity to see the Alfa 147 Ducati Corse, one of only 500 other such vehicles, during a special presentation held at the Marsa Sports Club. The Alfa 147 Ducati features the special ‘Giulietta Red’ colour with Ducati racing stripes across the sills and logos and with the inside adorned with black leather-clad, hip-hugging sports seats with red stitching and Ducati Corse embroidery on the headrests.

The New Motoring Legislation A welcome change or a blow below the belt! by Fleur Balzan

We had been waiting for it for a long, long while! It was expected months ago, not to say a couple of years ago but what exactly was expected of this new regulation? And after the long wait which has resulted in a struggling industry, what has really changed in a system that has for several years had us paying so much more for what in other countries was by far cheaper? Let’s go back for a moment to the old system and the event that has practically forced the government to change the regulation. Until the end of 2008, anybody purchasing a vehicle, be it new or second hand imported from abroad, has had to pay a hefty registration, between 60 to 80%, depending on engine capacity and supposedly on the value of the car. Over and above this registration one had to pay 18% VAT on the value plus the taxation. Second hand cars brought from abroad however were subject to be valued by the Maltese authority rather than their actual value as per for how much they had been purchased for from abroad, and there was a minimum amount of registration tax for these used cars. This registration fee or tax call it as you please, was already very high and the additional VAT, a tax on a tax, made car prices in Malta amongst the highest when compared to similar vehicles in other countries.

In March 2007 the EU Commission warned Malta and Romania that its system was discriminating against second hand vehicles originating from member states. These countries were given two months to give ‘satisfactory responses’ to the commission or otherwise the EU Commission would proceed to the 2nd stage and bring the cases before the European Court of Justice. On 31st January 2008, Malta together with Austria and Finland were warned against charging VAT on the registration tax charged on vehicles. Again these countries were given 2 months to reform their legislation before the cases were taken before the European Court of Justice, On 3rd April 2008 the EU Commission once again warned Malta that its registration tax was discriminating against second hand vehicles bought from other member states. Once again it gave Malta two months to regulate its position or otherwise it would… bla bla bla. Talk but no action! WHEELSPIN

27

CIRCULATION TAX

Throughout this period the motoring industry in Malta was at a standstill! The consequence? While the government was sitting pretty, promising fairness to those car buyers of 2008, the car sellers and all those that worked together with this industry were thrown into a recession months before the recession had even started anywhere else in the world. Now let’s go back to the New Legislation. What has changed? Have the decisions taken really reflected what was supposed to be a priority: the environment? I personally have my doubts! The registration tax is still very much a heavy reality but whereas previously this was calculated on the value of the vehicle and engine capacity, it is now calculated according to the CO2 emissions and the length of the car plus, for diesel engines, the particulate matter of the particular engine. Not a bad system one would think and in reality it is not all bad. Except the mathematical equations worked out do not always reflect positively price wise on ‘clean cars’ which anywhere else in Europe are considered to be environment friendly and therefore should be reasonably cheap to buy. I will not go into the formulas being used for calculation of the registration tax. God knows it is complicated enough and unless one knows the actual cost price plus profit to importer, what’s known as Registration Value, it is practically impossible to calculate yourself. Through this new system several middle size family cars have gone down in price, as should have been the case, however, one can not but ask why the smaller, cleaner cars have only gone down by a fraction. Whilst larger 4x4, gas guzzling cars have gone up in price, we have seen a hefty reduction in higher segment vehicles, some as much as €10,000 and why not when these may actually be cleaner and more fuel efficient than some other vehicles around. It is about time that we Maltese can opt for a new car at a reasonable price instead of having to go for a second hand vehicle with no warranty simply because of the price. We’ve been a country of second hands for too long and in my opinion cars should be like clothing, passed on to sons and daughters or even sisters but not sold as seconds to drivers who have no other option because they can never even afford the smallest new vehicle. Making Malta the ‘junk-yard’ of other countries! 28

WHEELSPIN

Enough with the registration tax and in comes the Circulation tax previously known as the Windscreen licence. Many were those car owners who have feared this new circulation tax as it could penalise car owners who cannot afford to buy new vehicles. In reality car owners who bought their vehicles prior to 2009 have had their road licence/circulation tax increased by a little if the car is between 0 to 6 years old and the rates only go up slightly as the car gets older. The burden may however be on those who own bigger engine cars that are older than 12 to 15 years and one would say that this might not be fair. However if the environment is really a priority, this decision had to be taken and in reality a car used regularly should also have a shelf life. Like we all do at the end of the day! Older cars considered to be classic or vintage have been given reasonable concessions so this ‘passion’ has not been burdened as much. As for cars bought after 2009, or those bought in 2008 opting for the 2009 system, the circulation tax is now calculated on the CO2 emissions from petrol engines or diesel engines which after all is an important matter for the whole world and not only for Malta. It is ones responsibility to choose a car which is clean and the new technologies that have been developed by different brands have given us a good choice of clean fun cars to choose from. Clean does not mean slow and power does not automatically convert to a dirty environment so the circulation rates may not be so tough on drivers and car lovers. One issue which is irritating in this whole matter is the fact that those who bought cars in 2008 are not getting what they were promised in the long months before this overdue decision was taken. The government promised those buyers that their rights would not be infringed should they buy a car in 2008 and that they would have a choice to opt for the 2009 system and be refunded all monies paid extra. This was nothing but a pack of lies and the only refund to be given is in the form of a credit on the circulation tax. Yes right! And this means that some of us out there have paid our circulation tax 20 years in advance.. Oh wait! And in case you didn’t know, should you decide to sell that car, it is the new owner who will get the credit because for certain the car didn’t pay the circulation tax itself!! And what with the extra VAT paid on the registration tax, the issue that made the EU Commission take steps against Malta. Well, my dears, this we’re told, will not be refunded not as cash and not even in credit, so where is the EU Commission now? Will it take the Maltese government to the European Court of Justice or will it be those 2008 buyers to stand up for their rights and take the government to court for a cash refund of what was promised to them. And while we’re at it, we should take the EU Commission to court too for not standing by its two months warning to the detriment of us Maltese citizens and the local Motoring Industry as a whole!

by Fleur Balzan

The new Subaru Forrester has been given a completely different look. The new model was launched at the Paris Motor Show and within days the same vehicle was also available in Malta. Is that service or what? Well, the Wheelspin team had the opportunity to take the car out for a good test drive on our roads soon after its arrival in Malta and like every other time that we drove a Subaru, we were anxious to try out this ultra technologically rich vehicle which is a dream to all motoring lovers. If you had to look at this new 2009 model you would notice that this latest Forester is definitely more attractive than its predecessor. It’s a car that one would surely look twice at. Manly yet beautiful! Actually quite attractive and very different from the previous model. It seems that the Asians are doing a good job of coming up with designs that appeal to a wider European clientele. Besides the improvement in the looks, the car is also bigger with an increase in leg room of up to 4.3 inches for the rear seats. The wheelbase has also been increased by 3.6 inches while the length and width have increased by 3 inches and 1.8 inches respectively and it is taller too. All this means that the new Forester offers greater overall capacity.

Test Drive SUBARU FORESTER 2.0D XSn

The Subaru Forester is a proper 4 wheel drive, an SUV that is capable of tackling different roads. The Forester has the famous Subaru boxer diesel engine that we had already tried in the legacy and Impreza. This engine features the advanced Subaru technology, the boxer diesel, a breakthrough for Subaru which has had us all talking about it for a long while. The benefits of having a boxer engine is that it is flatter and therefore allowed the designers to come up with a car which is more aerodynamic and which features better handling. The handling is improved on any type of road. Due to the fact that the engine is situated on the front of the vehicle the control from the steering is also improved on all surfaces, also those off road. The engine we tried is a 2litre turbo diesel flat four with direct injection common rail which allows an average of 45 miles to the gallon. It has a 6 speed manual gearbox which is very precise, comfortable and responsive a fact which is appreciated even more when off road. When compared to other diesel engines, it is one of the cleanest with 167grams of C02 per km. The engine we tried offers 145 bhp in 3,600rpm and 258 lb ft of torque between 1,800rpm and 2400rpm. It reaches 60 miles per hour in 10 seconds and does the top speed of 116 miles per hour. Well, needless to say we made the best of our day out with this New Subaru Forester we tried it on different roads and had some fun with it too.. Given the chance I’d gladly go out on this date again!

This is a 1989 Camaro RS bought locally with 350ci and manual transmission. The colour is a hard to find Maui Blue. It is a 19 year old Camaro with only 16000 miles built in July of 1989 in Van Nuys/California and is 1 of 83,487 produced that year.

The American Motors Club is giving us the chance to find out more about American Cars and their popularity in Malta whilst also finding out more about the Maltese who own some of these cars and form part of this ever growing club. In this issue we take a look at the 1989 Chevrolet Camaro RS owned by Lawrence Sciberras and we go back through the history of this particular model. Chevrolet started building first generation Camaro’s in 1967 with the first models being the RS (Rally Sport) and SS (Super Sports) models with 327cubic inch and 350 cubic inch engines. They later introduced the race oriented Z-28 models. In 1968 private workshops were authorised by General Motors to buy new Camaros from GM and modify them with all aluminium 427ci big blocks which also sold under the GM licence. The choice was between the Copo (Central Office Personal Options) and Yenko which both of them are very rare to find. An example of the Yenko is the blue 69’ Camaro seen in 2 Fast 2 Furious movie.

There were also Limited Edition models named Baldwin motion with unique sport stripes in the seventies whilst only 2 Yenko models were built in 1980. These were both white and in 2005 one of them was auctioned and sold for over $165,000 1982 saw the beginning of the 3rd generation Camaro with several models like Berlinetta, Sport Coupe and Z-28, available with 4cylinder, 2.8ltr or 3.1ltr V6 engines with 305ci and 350ci with different carburetion systems like 4 barrel carburators. Cross Fire injection was dropped after the first year. Tuned Port injection with multi point injection was adopted on the Camaro from the 4th generation Corvette with over 225 bhp and 240bhp in 1986

In 1969 GM dropped the coke bottle shape body and built the famous 1969 model with unique body shape and again with retractable headlight covers and also with a new 396ci V8 engine. This was the end of the 1st generation of Camaros and the best of muscle cars.

1989 saw the return of the RS name a model which looked much like the 1985 Z28 and later the 1LE model of which only 111 models were produced in 1989, 62 in 1990, 478 in 1991 and 705 in 1992. Later in 1991 and 1992 a face lift was done to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Camaro and this was available with heritage stripes Also available was the IROC-Z (International Race Of Champions) with 305ci with 230bhp or 240 bhp The Iroc-Z was also used as an official pace car in Indianapolis.

From the early seventies to 1981 there was the 2nd generation Camaro all with a Sporty coupe look and several engines to choose from, such as the 327ci, 350ci, and 427ci V8’s and also the 6 cylinders especially built for export.

The 4th generation arrived in 1993 with a new LT1 engine. Later a face lift was effected in 1998 with changes made to the headlights and interior and with a new LS1 engine producing over 345bhp. The story of the Camaro ended in 2002. WHEELSPIN

Love

at first sight by Fleur Balzan

Attractions come in all shapes and sizes, some are more eye catching than others, some you would not look at twice, that is until you try them out, whilst others you simply can’t resist, but then you can be left unimpressed with only one question in mind.. What did I ever see in it? Do these words sound familiar? Yes right! Maybe if you had been talking of some girl with the guys over a bud or you girls discussing the new hunk in town everyone thought too much of, that is until he opened his mouth to talk!! But no sir/madam, once again it is cars I’m talking about. Well I am lucky enough to have such thoughts going through my mind very often.. What with all the different cars I drive and see every year not to mention every week!! Yes the girl is modest! Did you think otherwise? It is however rare that I see a car, drive it for a couple of days, go back to driving other cars and still continue thinking of that one car I drove weeks before. It did happen to me with the BMW 1 series convertible, a beautiful car, without any doubt but a car that also offers the thrill of a magnificent drive which to me is even more important. Surely every drivers dream. After having driven this beauty when it was launched to the Media in Valencia less than a year ago, this car went straight to the top of my ‘best of the bunch list’ not to say top of my wish list! So now I have managed to get this car for a long term lest drive and by the looks of it, the meaning of long term will be respected to the full from my end! When I first drove the BMW 1 series convertible, I was given the 125i fully equipped with any extras imaginable, the usual treat BMW offer the media at any International launch. Here in Malta however, I opted for the 118i, a model with a 1995cc engine which emits only 149 grms of CO2 / km. It has an output of 143bhp @6000rpm and reaches the top speed of 210 km/hr and has the maximum torque of 190Nm @4,250rpm. If anybody still thinks that fancy, powerful sports cars are not environmentally WHEELSPIN

friendly, they are mistaken and this is just one example of a car giving lots of performance whilst still being clean. It seems that BMW are definitely a step ahead when it comes to being environment friendly all thanks to the Efficient Dynamics technology which we cannot hear enough about. This BMW 1 series convertible reaches 0 to 100km in 9.3 seconds and consumes an average of 6.3litres of fuel per 100km. The BMW 1 series convertible comes in a choice of other engines which are the 120i, the 125i, the 135iS, the 118d, the 120d and the 123d with the largest engine, the 135i, being the straight six petrol engine with Twin Turbo and direct fuel injection (High Precision Injection) with a capacity of 2,979cc. When compared to other large engines, this BMW still has limited CO2 emissions of 224 g/km which again goes to show the advances being made by BMW when it comes to clean technology. Over the coming months we will be keeping this great car, the 118i version and we will continue to bring our viewers and our readers further updates about what this car is all about.. So far I’m loving it and I dare say that, for once, this has been love at first sight for me.. Well I really can’t resist, I’m off for another drive!

– CHANGING THE SHAPE OF OPEN TOP MOTORING by Gerald Fenech A name which has always been associated with class and high quality is certainly the British make Bentley, the choice of Kings and Queens and the fabulously rich who always have one of these prestigious models in their garages. Their new addition to the carefully selected range of open top sports cars which should re-define the way convertible motoring, is the Bentley Azure T, a six and a quarter litre engine monster which is every motorist’s dream and for the lucky ones who can afford it – it is truly out of this world.

WHEELSPIN

37

Stylish and powerful, the new Bentley Azure T claims to be the world’s most elegant convertible and is destined to become a future classic. With unique Bentley ‘T’ styling cues reinforcing its sporting stance, the 500bhp Azure T delivers driver-focused performance with the ability to transport four adults in first-class, open-top luxury. The new Azure T, specified with the high performance version of Crewe’s iconic 6¾ litre V8 engine, is the latest in a line of Bentley models to bear the ‘T’ legend. The 1996 Continental coupe was the first modern Bentley ‘T’, followed in 2002 by the Arnage T, both flagship models with a distinctive sporting character and thunderous performance. Some believed that these couldn’t be bettered but when you see what the Azure is capable of then you’ll wag your head in disbelief! For the performance-oriented Azure T, the twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 500bhp and 1000 Nm of torque – an 11 per cent increase in power and a 14 per cent increase in torque over its 450bhp/875 Nm Azure stable mate.

“The famous Bentley wave of torque is even more prodigious than before and performance is significantly raised with a top speed of 179 mph (288 km/h) and a 0-60 mph time of just 5.2 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.5 sec).” Bentley’s designers highlight the 1955 Park Ward S1 Drophead Coupé and 1995 Azure as the main influences for the current Azure and Azure T. Like the ’50s convertible, the car has a deep body with a single feature line that runs along both flanks and rises at the powerful rear haunches before spearing off at the rear of the car. Similarly, the Azure T’s fast and flowing roofline is echoed in its seven-bow canvas roof that gives the car a visible sporting profile when raised. Bentley’s V8 guarantees outstanding performance levels. From standstill, acceleration to 60 mph is achieved in just 5.2 seconds (0-100 km/h 5.5 seconds), 100 mph reached in 12.1 seconds (160 km/h in 12.0 seconds) and a top speed of 179 mph (288 km/h) is possible.

The global economic downturn has taken its toll on all industries and the motoring industry has not been spared. One can say that all companies are being extremely cautious as to how their money is spent and prioritising has become a necessity. Land Rover is one of the latest companies to reduce expenditure and to do so they have taken the somewhat drastic decision to cancel the Land Rover G4 Challenge. The reason given is that the company will focus on more product launches in 2009. Land Rover Managing Director Phil Popham has expressed his disappointment for the competitors who have always been committed to this event however this decision was taken for the benefit of the business. The Land Rover G4 Challenge was committed to generate funds for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and its aim was to generate £1 million over the course of two programmes. Land Rover has confirmed however that even though the challenge has been cancelled, the company remains committed to this partnership

New BMW F 800 R BMW presented the new F800 R at the EICMA 2008 – Milan MotorCycle show, a new sporty roadster in the naked bikes category, a bike which offers a high level of riding dynamics and maximum riding fun. This model is set to be launched in May 2009 and the on the road price is expected to be in the region of €9000. The new F800R is fitted with a parallel twin engine, using a 4 valve technology, inline 2 cylinder. The power of this engine was uprated to 87 bhp and is also familiar in the F 800 S versions. However this model still offers strong pulling power and spontaneous response and at even low fuel consumption. Throttle response was also upgraded with the new valve kinematic throttle system introduced in this model. The weight of this new F800 R is also an important factor. In fact the bike weighs 204kgs fully fuelled or 184kgs dry. Chassis is fitted with a double sided rear wheel swing arm which was specially designed and adapted to the requirements of this sporty naked bike. This chassis was designed to offer excellent handling, agility and steering precision and therefore maximising the riding fun in country roads and also at high speeds on the motorway. Unlike most BMW models, the F800R uses an ‘O’ ring chain for the final drive. The F 800 R is also optionally fitted with an ABS, with a newly developed pressure sensor providing an even finer regulation of the system and therefore even greater safety – especially in connection with sporty riding. Great care was taken in the quality details when it comes to the rider vision with new instrumental panels. The over finish and quality of this bike is superb. Final verdict on this bike is that BMW has yet managed to offer a compact, sporty naked bike with high level of riding dynamics and agility for maximum riding fun!! WHEELSPIN

It is powered by two 90Amp power supplies and two 3 Farad Capacitors. All this is taken care of by a PC which has special programmes installed in it so that it can take care of the racing management. This sport has been practiced in Malta for almost seven years and with a lot of work and discussions, following a race held in Germany, a union for European racers was founded. This is called E.S.D.U which stands for European Slot Drag Union. The first race for the Europeans was hosted in Malta last May, with participants from nine different countries and over 250 cars. The race took three days to finish. Now something about the cars, these are powered by small electric motors which can give a huge torque and also revs (sometimes up to 250,000 rpm) resulting in unbelievable 42

speeds. The fastest cars can manage to run E.T’s of half a second. The record in Malta for these type of cars is a .483 E.T with a 113 mph. There is also a class for beginners. This is run by a less powered motor and can also run under the one second limit. All this was made possible thanks to Charles Caruana who made such a great raceway in Ghaxaq and gave it the name ‘ Smokey Wheels Raceway’. In this same place one can also find a Scalextric. The club has over 40 members and races take place almost every Saturday with the track being open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Anyone wishing more information on this club can call on Mob. 79200275. All ages are welcome. Wheelspin welcomes any motoring clubs wishing to feature in the magazine.
