I don’t know what it is about July but this month is a breather for me. Maybe because I was born under the crab sign and with the TV programme on a ‘break’ I get to appreciate a little more the sight of the sea and the tranquillity of it. Or maybe it’s the company of friends as we relax with some wine during one of the many bbq’s held this season. Whatever it is, this last month is one that inspires me and it has given me the urge to work even harder for the upcoming season which believe it or not, is not that far away. Although the programme is on a break, the Wheelspin team has been busy throughout the month. We have had some launches both locally and abroad to keep us very busy and one has to prepare in earnest for all the forthcoming international motoring events which are to commence soon. In this issue we bring to our readers more reviews about vehicles that have made it to Malta recently and info about events held locally to the joy of the thousands of motoring enthusiasts. Articles about motoring current issues are not lacking as we take a look at the new Taxi reform and the progress being made by Toyota after the recent headlines. The previous Spring issue seems to have brought with it a few controversies. We have received several emails and letters with regards to our article about car registrations in Malta and no matter if the opinions are for or against our arguments, it is positive that the reactions arrived to us in full force. Several were the comments received for the various articles and we thank those who have commented on the fact that our content is real and contains topics that other such publications may opt against in case they anger someone. We at Wheelspin are committed to continue giving our readers and TV viewers all the news from the motoring world, be it the launch of a beautiful, breath taking vehicle or any issues currently in the news. The satisfaction is returned from the feedback received from you, the Wheelspin follower. For this we thank you! Enjoy the read as much as we have enjoyed bringing you the articles!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Just a short email to let you know that from merely reading Wheelspin magazine, I have began to follow parts of the programme on TV. As regards the article on ‘Increased traffic fines...a step in the right direction?’ I must say that the statements made were rather one sided. Rather than fining usually the private car owner a hefty one hundred euro with the new fines, why were so many not fined according to the previous charges? Perhaps the legislator could have thought of retaining the previous fine amount for private cars and installing newer higher charges for bus and truck drivers? Another thought which comes to mind is whether those with loud volume speakers full on with closed or open windows cruising our motorways pose more a danger to other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians? As regards red lights at night (not just in some districts), in at least one European city I visited, several of the crossing lights during the night are left on blinking amber and only a few are still left rotating on the three colours. So why, may I ask, could something similar not be contemplated here as well? For have we joined the EU to get on board the hefty rise in charges and regulations and not a regime more responsive to reasonableness? Guz Bonnet Hi Wheelspin, Every magazine I get of Wheelspin I cannot stop reading from cover to cover. Your articles are so straight to the point and I wonder if you also get quite a little bit of problems when attacking such issues as car registration shown on issue 7. Well, for me I think you are brave to write about it the way it is instead of beating about the bush. I wish there were more magazines on other topics that could do the same. Good luck and keep it up. Josephine Psaila

Dear Fleur, Well done for the magazine! It’s been quite a while since I read the last magazine and today my parents paid me a visit in the UK and brought me the Mag. Reading it made me nostalgic of my past reads of the magazine. Actually I’m sending you this mail not to praise your work (because that is done by everyone :P) but I wanted to point out that the McLaren’s No2 is Lewis Hamilton and not Louis! I’m sure it’s a genuine mistake but I still wanted to point it out because I think that media should give the correct information.Anyways well done for the Mag and wonderful MiTo front page. Maybe in the next edition you can speak about the new Giulietta Mr.Jean Marie Darmanin

Dear Fleur, I read your article about car registrations in Malta and had to sit down and write this message. I am one that thought of buying a 2nd hand car from the UK even though I am no mechanic or experienced in cars. I was also about to enter into a scam but luckily a friend warned me about what was happening with scams asking for deposits through the internet. I was saved from wasting away thousands of Euros. But I ask why can’t our new car prices be like other European countries? Then we can buy new cars instead of 2nd hand from other countries. It is just not fair that we have to pay so much more because of registration. (Name and surname withheld)

Just a quick note to say how much I loved seeing you present the programme together these last months. Wheelspin is my favourite TV programme because it’s ‘bis-sens’ and now the magazine is my favourite motoring magazine of good quality and so interesting to read. And even better it’s free. I hope to see the programme starting again soon after summer. V Meli

performance! The front wheel drive chassis of the RCZ is actually that of the 308 hatchback except it’s wider and lower yet this RCZ is tighter on corners and really fun to drive. Now for the details that make this car so exceptional! The Peugeot RCZ I drove has a 2 litre diesel engine which produces 163bhp at 3,750rpm and has a maximum torque of 345 nm at 2,000 rpm. Irrelevant of its high performance, it is surprisingly clean emitting just 139g of CO2 per km, thanks to Peugeot’s HDi technology. This technology includes an extremely high performance emission control system and a self cleaning system which treats the gas from the combustion of the diesel in the engine whilst the filters reduce the diesel particles to a minimum. Its tremendous performance is possible thanks to a new generation combustion chamber, a low inertia variable geometry turbocharger and a high pressure pump which makes it possible to reach 2,000 bars in the common rail and also eight-hole solenoid injectors. The car has a 6 speed manual gearbox which shifts easily and it consumes an average of 5.3 litres of fuel per 100km for mixed urban and inter urban driving.

equipped. It has a braking system with ESP, an anti skid regulation system, electronic brake force distribution, an intelligent traction control which detects situation of difficult grip, 4 airbags and much, much more. The interior is elegantly French! Uncluttered yet stylish and modern made of fine materials and with touches of chrome which make it even more sporty. The car is a 2 + 2 meaning that there are two back seats which, although not very spacious, do offer the option of another 2 people travelling with the driver and front passenger. One other thing that really struck me in this car is the space in the boot! The boot has a capacity of 384 litres and that’s without folding the back seats which can increase the space to 760 litres. Incredible for such a car and much more than one could find in a normal hatchback. Well it seems that Peugeot have truly found the right combination in offering a sporty fun car which offers both performance and a comfortable drive. And to top it all, (I know I’ve mentioned it already) the car is beautiful looking. Utterly stunning to say the least!! Definitely one for my wish list!

When it comes to safety, this car is more than

Beautiful cars are something I see quite often! I am lucky enough to visit some of the most popular motor shows worldwide and this gives me the opportunity to look at the different cars being designed by various manufacturers. When I first saw the Peugeot RCZ being presented at one of these shows as a concept car, I immediately spotted it as a model completely different to others we usually associate to this French brand. However, nothing prepared me for the adrenaline boost it gave me immediately I stepped foot in the vehicle ready to take it out for a spin! I had some days prior admired the vehicle at a local car show and I had taken the opportunity to get a good look at it and admire its looks! This is an adorable sports car beautifully designed to compete with the likes of the Audi TT. It has a low elongated curved roof for optimum aerodynamics and with an aluminium arch from back to front which makes a further emphasise on the sporty, elegant image of the car. The back windscreen and roof are in the form of a ‘double bubble’, something Peugeot kept from the original concept car, and the car has a muscular look to it which, in my eyes, make it that much more attractive. However, as much as I loved the looks of the car, I was completely won over but the drive of this more than fabulous vehicle! One step on the gas pedal says it all and the car just ‘fly’s’ with great ease on the roads. Fasten your seat belts, get ready for some fast exciting heartbeats and be prepared for an aching jaw brought by the constant grinning the drive gives you! Well, that’s what happened to me! Once I started driving I had this grin on my face which wouldn’t go away. My trip suddenly got longer and I was taking roads I had not originally planned to take. Any accuse was worth keeping this car for as long as I could have it for!! On the road this car is a dream! It has a low centre of gravity and has excellent handling and road holding with reinforced suspension and wheels. The front suspension is pseudo Mac Pherson whilst the rear comes with deformable crossmember. It is immensely comfortable whilst driving, you’d actually forget you’re driving a sports car, except obviously, for the 6

REFORM After the much vaunted reform in public transport, the hearses and minivans, now comes the taxi reform which is certainly much needed on every front. Taxis in Malta have been notoriously overpriced for decades and the level of service in some cases – especially with regards to tourists, has left much to be desired. Rampant overcharging and a generally rude attitude by some drivers to customer service have put Malta in the dark on a number of occasions with the decent drivers getting labeled with the somewhat bad reputation of their colleagues The reform document states that there are currently 200 taxis in Malta with the number expected to rise to 250 after 2015 with strict control on new licenses (20 in 2010 and another 20 in 2011 with a final 10 issued in 2012). Taxis operating in Gozo are to remain the same in number and that is 50. A competitive tender will be issued for new taxis with a minimum of EUR 20,000 per taxi with the license being non transferable for five years. We now come to what is probably the most contentious issue and that is the fare amount which is charged by taxis. The maximum will remain the same as it is today but there will 8

by Gerald Fenech

be fixed fares to popular node points such as MIA, the Sea Passenger Terminal in Marsa, St Julians, City Gate Valletta and Bugibba. A system of group branding will also be introduced with advertising on taxis, which should eventually see a reduction in fares, as part of the taxi drivers income will come from advertising (similar to buses). Electric taxis will have a fixed fare of EUR 5 per trip. A strict disciplinary regime for the issue of new licenses is also being introduced. So someone who was found guilty of committing a serious offence (murder, rape etc) will automatically be excluded from the competition. Other conditions include a clean conduct for the past ten years or not having incurred fines exceeding EUR 1,000 for traffic violations. If a driver has had his license revoked or was fined a fine of EUR 4,000 in the past five years he will also be ineligible for a bid. An educational programme will also be implemented where there will be knowledge courses and other training for new drivers as well as a probation period of five years. Existing drivers will have to take obligatory courses and will also suffer point reduction for every offence. The accumulation of

200 points will result in a two year license suspension. Taxis will also have to conform to a strict code of specifications which include an engine of at least 1400cc for M1 vehicles (five persons and a driver), CCTV, emergency button, GPS and Two-way communication systems. New cars have to be introduced and these will be changed after 15 years. The vehicles have to be airconditioned, carry adverts and include a taxi meter which is centrally monitored. A fiscal receipt from the meter will also have to be issued and if a vehicle is used without a meter, it will be confiscated. Additionally, the taxi’s identification certificate has to be clearly visible while the fares list also has to be identifiable. There will also be priority boarding for persons with disability and drivers will be given instructions how to deal with such cases. Each vehicle also has to have wheelchair accessibility. The taxi reform will be implemented within the next three months up to a year after wide consultations with the relative associations. This is also all part of a modal shift in the public transport system which will eventually see all sectors liberalized up to 2015.

THE KIA VENGA PLEASANTLY VERSATILE by Fleur Balzan

I remember when I first saw the Kia Venga at some international motor show I had the impression that this was going to be another small car by Kia, a car to further strengthen a segment in which the brand was already so successful in. However, when the car was launched in Malta recently I saw this vehicle with different eyes, meaning that this car didn’t look so small after all! Well, I do not want to be misunderstood here. This car is not a large car in the sense that it doesn’t occupy more space than any other B segment vehicle. Once seated in the car however, one gets the impression that this Venga is much larger than it actually is. Kia are calling it their Compact MPV and one

would say that this model has entered the market right on time when people are looking for spacious yet compact vehicles. A few days after the local launch I took this car out for a long drive to finally satisfy my curiosity as to what this car was all about. Yes, I was curious to say the least, even more so as, my first impression of the vehicle when seen abroad and my impression on seeing it in Malta were not in line with each other!! I was therefore anxious to sample the drive for myself to actually feel this car thoroughly. Nothing like driving a vehicle to really feel what a car has to offer! Driving out of the Kia showroom in Qormi, I

immediately realised this was no small car, at least not from the inside. The car is higher than the average hatchback. The driving position is somewhat elevated and extremely comfortable and the road ahead is completely visible. The head space and shoulder space in this vehicle are very good, even at the back, whilst the space in the rear is also ideal for any adult, let alone children. The rear seats can recline making them ideal for longer distances and they can slide forward increasing the boot space while the back seats can still be occupied. This versatility, I feel, is extremely useful. Space where and when you need it! Ideal don’t you think? The boot space of the car is average, 440 litres, yet this may be increased to 570 litres. It has a 2 tier floor

with the lower level ideal for storage and the upper level being flat with the open tail end, so convenient for easier loading. From the outside the Kia Venga is appealing. It has a slanting waistline from the front moving higher to the back in line with the door handles and a parallel curve on top of it leading to the top of the tail lights. The front features a grille circled with chrome featuring the Kia badge and a lower grille in the centre of the fog lights which give it a sporty feel to it. The bonnet is short, one of the reasons why the car appears smaller than it actually is, and the car may also come with a panoramic sun roof, which gives the feel of open driving whilst making the car even more appealing to a wider range of age groups. The interior of the vehicle is attractive. The materials used are sturdy and definitely child proof’ and the seats may be chosen in a choice of stylish colours and leather trims. The dashboard features a stereo system in the centre, with very good sound and with AUX and USB outlets, and above it a small digital screen showing data such as temperature, time and trip distance. Below it the other functions such as AC etc, are easily reachable whilst some functions are also available on the steering wheel. The model I drove also had a system by the speedometers which informs the driver when to change gears for

12

better economy and also Bluetooth which is optional.

The Kia Venga, a welcome vehicle whatever ones needs!

The engine I drove is a 1.4 litre diesel engine featuring the latest 2nd generation Common Rail Diesel technology, with a very smooth manual transmission and offering 75 bhp. The engine is small, even in appearance yet, this is not felt in the drive. The Venga may not be a performance vehicle yet never once does this engine feel too small for the body of the car and this particular model reached a high speed of 157 kmph. The drive is smooth, the steering wheel responds well and the handling and road holding are also very good even though the car is higher than most hatchbacks. Sharp curves and roundabouts are handled very well, even at accelerated speed and on the whole, one feels very safe when on the road. When mentioning safety, this car is not lacking. The Kia Venga is equipped with 6 airbags, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), BAS (Brake Assist system) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control). It may also come with HAC (Hill Start Assist Control) ideal for starting the car on steep roads and hills. The Venga also has a rigid body shell in case of impact as well as carefully positioned crumble zones. On top of all this it comes with the famous Kia 7 Year Warranty so far unbeaten by any brand.

Baby Golf... or Polo?

The all-new Chevrolet Spark is all about fun, fashion and functionality. With a bundle of extras, Spark comes at an unbeatable price. PUT SPARK INTO YOUR LIFE!

by Fleur Balzan

One car which has never failed in popularity ever since it was introduced in the mid 70’s is the VW Polo. The car has seen many generations and many facelifts, so it is no wonder that this last model of the 5th generation is one to be admired. When the Polo was introduced it was considered the supermini car manufactured by a most sought German brand Volkswagen, but can the supermini title still apply to this latest model? Maybe not any longer! We took out the latest VW Polo for a spin to find out what this model is all about.

MIRA MOTOR SALES LTD MEMBER OF THE ZAMMIT GROUP OF COMPANIES Mriehel By-Pass, Mriehel BKR 3000 Tel: 2278 1278 Email: chevy@zamgroup.com 14

On first appearance, this car is far from a supermini. It seems to have grown more muscular over the years and it is truly looking more like its most famous older sister, the VW Golf. The exterior design is neat and sculptured with a high straight waistline and a distinctive lower curve from beneath the wheel arches between the front and back wheels. The front two bar grille and the VW emblem are also very much like those on the Golf although the Polo is about 11 inches lower making one think that VW wanted to attract a similar clientele of the Golf to this model, one that is maybe slightly younger and with a smaller budget!

The model we drove is a Comfortline 1.2 litre petrol engine and yet, when on the road, one would think he’s driving a much larger engine. The body is light and so the car, even with such a small engine, is swift and agile and one never feels it lacks power even on uphill roads. The Polo offers a smooth ride with great handling and road holding whilst the 5 speed gearbox is also very smooth and shifts easily. The 1.2 litre offers 70bhp and has a maximum speed of 165 kmph. It reaches from standstill to 100km in 14.1 seconds, not exactly sporty, but this is more than made up for once you reach an average speed. Most importantly, the car has very low CO2 emissions, just 128g/km which in this day and age is a very important factor to look out for when shopping for a new vehicle. Once in the cabin, the driver has a very good driving position with a clear view of the road ahead and no black spots were noticed. The dashboard is elegant, not too loud but distinctive with features having a touch of matte chrome and with a Radio CD player that has an attractive large digital screen. And there is a multi function digital display which gives the driver all the information required whilst on the road. The glove compartment has a cooling facility which in our weather is

quite useful and the airconditioning system is exceptional and never affects the drive! The back seats are also quite spacious and five people would fit comfortably in this car whilst the boot is spacious enough with a useful double luggage compartment. The cabin is completely sound proof once inside and all windows are closed, yet, one thing we noticed is that, when idle, the car may be quite noisy. This however is not heard at all from within the vehicle, at a standstill or when driving. Safety and Security is not lacking in this vehicle. The Polo has an ultramodern airbag system and ESP with hill holder which prevents the car from breaking away in difficult driving conditions through an intervention in the brake and engine management. It also comes with a collapsible pedal cluster in case of impact plus, something which I

launches The cute and sweet 500C

The Fiat 500C has finally arrived in Malta just in time for the beautiful summer season so appropriate for a cute car like this. The launch event was held at the Splash and Fun Park in Bahar ic-caghaq.

Fluently French! Renault have been presenting some beautifully designed vehicles lately and their latest arrival in Malta, the Renault Fluence is another to join the striking lot. The New Renault Fluence was launched in mid July at the Kinds Showroom in Lija. This is a sedan vehicle offering class and refinement and which reflects an even more luxurious vehicle. The car is equipped with the latest technologies amongst them the hands free entering and starting. This feature allows the driver/owner holding the key card to enter the vehicle and start the car without the need of inserting a key in the ignition. The Renault Fluence comes in a choice of economical engines amongst them and eco² dci diesel version offering 85 bhp and the 1.6 16v offering 110 bhp, both with a 5 speed manual gearbox.

The Fiat 500C may be a small car but it is expected to be just as popular, if not more, than the hatchback version of which we see quite a few on our roads. Young, colourful, attractive and with an exclusive feel to it, the Fiat 500C is an Italian icon which has retained many characteristics of the model as known in the past. It is however packed with modern technologies which have made it one of the most successful convertibles in the City Car segment. The car comes in a choice of engines amongst them 2 petrol engines, the 1.2 litre 8v offering 69bhp and the 1.4 litre 16v offering 100bhp. The third available engine is the 1.3 litre 16 v Multijet turbodiesel with DPF offering 75bhp. All engines conform to strict Euro 5 emission standards with the 1.3 litre Multijet diesel being fitted with a diesel particulate filter as standard.

Venga da me‌ Kia Motors (Malta) Ltd recently launched their new vehicle the new Kia Venga, a completely new model for the brand. This is a car that is neither big nor is it small and it can be considered as a very good alternative to a normal hatchback having the interior space of a small MPV. This space Kia has achieved thanks to the high roofline and intelligently folding and sliding seats that make this car very family oriented. Consumers are offered a choice of engines to choose from all compliant with Euro 5 emission standards. We at Wheelspin have tried the car out for ourselves and the full review may be read on other pages of this same magazine.

Colourful Citroen DS3 Citroen have had another arrival recently, the beautiful iconic Citroen DS3 which was launched during a party at Sky Club. The Citroen DS3 is an original vehicle which has a style of its own! The range comes in 3 different styles, the Dsign, the DStyle and the DSport all promising to give one a fun drive. The model comes in a choice of 5 petrol and diesel manual engines with the petrol engines emitting between 136g/km and 160 g/ km of CO2. All models come with standard ESP, ABS with EBD and EBA. One of the things which really is striking about this car is that it may be personalised according to ones character, thus making it a car which may attract both the young and the young at heart!

BMW S 1000RR From cars to motorcycles! Muscats Motors have also recently launched the new BMW S 1000 RR, a supersport motorcycle in a class of its own. This bike produces 193 bhp at 13,000 rpm with a peak torque of 112 nm at 9,750 rpm. It weighs 206.5 kg whilst full of fuel and has a dry weight of 183kg and has the best power-to-weight ratio of 1.05 and 1.06kg per horsepower. It has optional dynamic traction control which in conjunction with the Race ABS, provide the best performance and maximum safety under acceleration.

Sporty Look, Family Oriented Lancer The new Mitsubishi Lancer in hatchback, or sportback as it is called, is now in Malta and it joins the Mitsubishi Lancer sedan version already quite familiar on our island. This new Sportback has a sculptured, athletic body which is aggressive yet attractive. The Sportback has a larger grille than the sedan version which further emphasises the aggressiveness of this model. The materials used on the inside are hard wearing and the seats are extremely comfortable, definitely a family car which is attractive to look at too. This vehicle has plenty of space at the rear and also in the boot which may increase with the touch of a button when the back seats are folded. It reaches a maximum speed of 181kmph and has very good handling whilst the suspension offers a very comfortable ride. 25

TOYOTA BACK ON TRACK Following the recent recall of some of its vehicles, Toyota has embarked on a no- holds- barred programme aimed at reinforcing its zero defects policy. A lot has been said and written about the recall but primarily one should appreciate that the world’s largest car maker managed to turn a potential pr nightmare into an opportunity for self examination and growth. Toyota has

Some also argued that paying the civil penalty to American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration signified accepting blame, but Toyota categorically dismissed any such reports. The company is claiming that the settlement was made in order to avoid a protracted dispute, thereby enabling itself to move forward fully-focused on delivering yet again, safe, reliable and high quality vehicles

From the onset of the recalls, the company’s first priority was to ensure customer safety and it immediately embarked on a worldwide recall programme which directly tackled any real or potential concerns.

its quality levels. Toyoda stressed that with immediate effect, Toyota will be much more attentive in inspecting every process – quality in design, quality in production, quality in sales and quality in service. Secondly, Toyota will enhance customer information research offices to improve regional information collection activities.

Many analysts commented on the negative repercussions that its recent problems would have on the reputation of the brand, but Toyota overcame its difficulties by looking inward and analysing throughly its own internal workings.

Through meticulous analytical methods the company re-examined quality processes in a holistic way and aspects such as Design, Manufacturing, Sales and Service Quality have all been scrutinised. This process led to Toyota recognising the need to set-up new initiatives like the ‘Special Committee for Global Quality’, where the newly appointed Chief Quality Officers exchanged their views on how to restore consumers trust. One of their conclusions has been the creation of much

with the industry’s best practice of its newly improved quality-control management, based on the above improvements. In addition, Toyota will work to increase the frequency of communication between itself and regional authorities. President Toyoda aims that through these stringent measures, the company will be able to restore the full confidence of the public and also reinstate its immaculate image as the Top Quality brand in the Auto industry.

As for the local agent, the matter was tackled swiftly and professionally as per Toyota standards. Geoffrey Debono (Michael Debono Ltd’s Managing Director) immediately held a press conference wherein he explained the nature of the problem and announced that as soon as the full list of potentially affected models had been received from Toyota, all concerned were contacted and modification work is now nearly approaching the 90% completion mark.

It is imperative to emphasise that there have been no reported cases in Europe of unintended sudden acceleration. Contrary to reports, local Japanese imports were never part of the recall and no modification was therefore required in their case.

Recently Toyota’s President, Akio Toyoda, announced a set of concrete measures which Toyota will be adopting to further improve

ultimate CAR SHOW the

The month of May was one full of celebrations for all motoring enthusiasts. Several were the events organised yet the month came to an end with one event which had a very appropriate name chosen for it, ‘The Mondifyit Monster Ultimate car show’. This was the second year the event was being organised and the organisers made sure that this year’s motoring celebration was much bigger than the very successful show organised last year. The Wheelspin team was present for this motor show and interviewed several of the proud owners of various cars on display. The Inside of the MFCC tent was covered with some of Malta’s most beautiful modified vehicles and it was a pleasure to meet the owners and discuss with them the work and energy they put in to finally have a show car of the level we saw at this Motoring Show. The event also featured a number of stunts by local car and motorcycle drivers. A team which goes by the name of Maximum lock,

which joined purposely for the event and is made up of drivers Mark Galea, Christian Bezzina and Clint Abela, gave a stunning show in their respective cars whilst Paul Deguara did the same on his motorcycle. The Modify Ultimate car show also featured International drivers, amongst them Terry Grant famous for driving a car on two wheels through the narrowest gap. Also present in Malta purposely for the car show were the team Triple Black who also gave several performances during the week end even though they were missing one of their vehicles due to transportation problems.

The past six months have seen the websites usage increase, coupled with greater interest for bespoke advertising.’ The website has grown from 300 cars in its first month to approximately 2500+ in just six months and Web Consulta’s Management team is confident that the new look and features will attract an even bigger audience, as well as provide the perfect environment for all sellers manufacturers and lifestyle brands. and Gozo, visiting historic sites and touristic venues as well as the Concours D’Elegance held in Mdina. In general, this event was organised very well and the organisers went through a whole lot to provide a comprehensive package of security, safety and racing facilities for the participants and the spectators. However one just cannot ignore the fact that such an event organised around and inside a capital city would also, inevitably cause undesired consequences. No one can deny that the traffic towards Valletta on that day became next to impossible to overcome and that the commercial community inside the capital suffered remarkable loss of business.

The Valletta Grand Prix Foundation Event 2010 by Mark Attard

Following last year’s debut event, the Valletta Grand Prix Foundation organised its second set of the Valletta Grand Prix Sprint and Demonstration Events during the first week of May. The events were staged around Valletta’s ring road. Last year, the 2-day sprint event attracted around 50 local and foreign participants and was approximately 1 Km long. It also attracted hundreds or even thousands of eager spectators along the road- track and created a great deal of interest

amongst the automotive sport and collection enthusiast community, especially the retro motors aficionados. It also paved the way to this year’s event. It now looks like this event is here to stay! At least for another four years as, the VGPF steering committee has declared that they had attained an exclusive agreement to do so. This year the event was supported by the Valletta and the Floriana Local Councils, the Malta

Although so many people enjoyed this event, some other people suffered either quite unbearable nuisance situations or financial shortfalls. Therefore I strongly feel that since this event is to be repeated annually the government entities involved and the organisers should really look into these induced difficulties and be really committed towards minimising them to acceptable humanitarian levels if not to eliminate them completely. Other than that, a great “well done” to all those involved in bringing this wonderful idea to life for the second time running and we hope to see many happier faces during the days of next year’s event!

Tourist Authority and the Malta Sport Council, together with other corporate sponsors. This activity, together with other prestigious European motor sports activities, attracted also a niche community of vintage sport and racing cars enthusiasts from around the globe. The foreign participants for this year’s event counted 40 out of the 100 in total. Several other secondary events were incorporated in the schedule like various runs across Malta

Before I commence relating my latest experience, I need to share with all Wheelspin readers my first secret love, as is the case the flame might trickle to a small candle glitter but it remains there. I remember way back when still at school, one of my prime hobbies was building Airfix scale models which I took pride in, even converting part of my bedroom furniture into a runway, hangar with lights and all yet giving the impression that it was a normal wardrobe. They were good times were weekends were spent out in the countryside next to any airfield watching military aircraft flying in and out. I love being on a plane, I even experienced aircraft gliding at a naval base in the UK quite some time ago. I remember I used to do my hair at the time! Well recently during my constant encounters with my very good friend Chris Cauchi, flight

was once more one of our discussed subjects. I had ardently followed Chris’s crusade when he ventured out to a distant land to get his wings. He used to text me of his adventures and experiences, yearning his return to hear at first hand the experience he would go through. Diamond Flight Training came into the equation with Chief Flying Instructor Jeremy Tan who together with Dr.Marco Ciliberti work incessantly to making this a success story. They were advised through Chris of my exploits and little did I know what was in store for me.

a wonderful, cool Spring day, standing on the apron awaiting earnestly instructions to board the aircraft. We were soon briefed by Chris. As you might have imagined once we were all tightly strapped in the flight cockpit of the Diamond DA40 TDI, Formula 1 had to drop from pole position and flight was the topic. It was a breath taking experience, especially when the final edited version was aired. Appropriately the sound track from Tom Cruise Top Gun was audited on the feature with background communications coming from airport control tower. Well we were not taking off from USS Enterprise in an F14 but believe me the sensation was not far off.

I remember we had a scheduled F1 interview with Chris, a passion we share together but Chris offered the Wheelspin crew to actually take to the air to conduct the interview. It was

I spoke in depth about the experience and within weeks I was back in the aircraft ready for my second flight, this time I could actually concentrate on the flight. A detailed pre-flight

check of all within the aircraft is a treat, the crew actually check and double check that all is in place and functioning. For sure if something had to happen, this was not a case like that of a car pulling to the side and calling the recovery service. However it is prelude to integrate man and machine. We were cleared for takeoff from runway 05 heading towards Portomaso. It was a clear day and the visibility was excellent. I could still hear the soundtrack from Top Gun as we soared up to 1500feet, the altitude that was assigned for our flight. Flying is not just learning to fly but the pilot has to become part of the aircraft, getting to feel the attitude of the plane and becoming part of the machine. The aircraft has to fly through a predetermined flight path, retaining the requested altitude and tackling wind which tends at time to take over the aircraft. The Diamond is a gem to fly, latest flying technology with dual displays available whilst taking away the complication of an array of dials, as all vital indicators are all grouped and switchable at a specific place on the dial. Chris is constantly monitoring my flying, mentioning the two fingers on the aircraft dashboard to be flying level and retaining your flight levels. Chris, besides a good friend is a treat to fly with; he is so reassuring and knows his job very well. We were soon over Gozo and here Chris, without his knowing, clearly illustrated his passion for flight! We had to turn left on reaching one of Gozo’s icons, the Xewkija parish church which is clearly visible. Well Chris remarked that once we were on top of Gozo’s airstrip we move to the left. I couldn’t help not commenting on his point of reference being the airstrip and not the church. We continued our flight path flying along the west side of the island, with Chris constantly explaining what was happening around us. Flying at this height in an all round visibility cockpit, one can appreciate a different visual of Malta, appreciating the beauty of the rugged cliffs contrasting against the deep blue coloured sea.

and after flight procedures really kick in the attention for detail given and the meticulous ritual that has to be followed making flying a real art. Well I cannot wait for my next opportunity to fly, hopefully with Chris we can venture away from our shores. If that happens for sure it will be shared with passion with our Wheelspin readers! Diamond Flight Training has been operating for over a year where it has superseded all expectations in pilot training. Flight course objectives range from ground training to JAA PPL licenses. From July, Diamond Flight Training will be staging a special familiarization flight course for students between the age of 14 and 15 years to give youngsters the first feel of flight and the possibility of taking this experience further. Powerboats return by Pierre Vella

The Powerboat 2010 was sent into jeopardy on the eve that local powerboat builders Chaudron were launching their all new Evolution Ukrainian Spirit at their premises in Fgura. Little did we know that the P1 management had sent the championship in mayhem due to some incompetent management from people who a few months earlier were inciting world class stackers to join this elite championship. It was an instant blow to all the teams who had their boats ready on the trailers to be ferried to the initial race venue which now had totally sunk. It was clearly being illustrated to the world that six years of prestigious powerboat racing was on the verge of collapse. However, here was a case were determination and love for the sport made the powerboat championship rise strongly to new levels. It was the same Ukrainian Spirit management who took over the planning and staging of the

Yalta Grand Prix of the Sea proving to be one of the best organized and highly attended events coupled up with some excellent racing out on the sea. It was clear that in the Evolution class the boats were all matched and competition was stiff whilst in the SuperSport, we had the veterans who were making a comeback with local boat manufacturer Chaudron having the Seagull (Ukrainian boat being driven by an all new Ukraine crew). Unfortunately, Chaudron’s evolution boat developed a mechanical problem within its engine department and had to retire whilst leading the sprint race.

After the successful Yalta event, the P1 without a management team however with the backing of the UIM, local entrepreneur Reuben Caruana took the decision of staging the event here in Malta. Once more Reuben showed his true potential getting the show in place in less than six days besides changing venue from the Viset terminal in Grand harbour to the Sliema, seafront. For once the weather was kind; Friday’s pole position in Marsamxett harbour was breath taking with boats creating a unique sound of power resonance along the route below the Valletta bastions.

The problem for the local boat builders was more serious than anticipated having three engines in the sick bay by Sunday. On their return to Malta the team opted to change to a more reliable engine with the Mercruiser. However to the disappointment of the local fans and organizers, the Ukrainian Spirit had to miss participation of the Malta event.

Saturday woke up with a slight overcast, a bit of a southerly wind creating a slight swell which created one of the best sprint races. I was posted on the judges’ boat just along the entry gate of the lap where some fine overtaking was staged. In the SuperSport Seagull Ukrainian spirit were placed third to the delight of the locals with Karelpiu finally

Well we soon requested permission to prepare for our landing. A strong cross wind was evident and coming into land was not going to be that easy. Here Chris showed his excellent skills of mastering the aircraft to a perfect landing. I joked as I told Chris I forgot to bring the arrestor hook down! Well we were back at our parking slot, and the post flight procedures were staged. These pre

taking the honours after so much heartbreak participation. The boat is crewed by father and son Giuseppe and Antonio Schiano di Cola with navigator Francesco Calo. Second place were Spirit of Belgium with Shelley Jory-Leigh and Patrick Huybreghts. The latter team were all smiles on the podium. Little did they know that the next day drama had to hit boat 17 when during the endurance race, the boat hooked, with Patrick being thrown out off the boat and into the sea. The crew was transferred to hospital but luckily all were released later with minor bruises. The boat suffered no damage whatsoever.

In the Evolution Furnibo of team 2B1 Racing affected a commanding race after SNAV Kiton withdrew. Second were MetaMarine Corse, with Lucas oil and Scandinavian Offshore Challenge collecting third place.

Caruana and his team should be applauded for the excellent show staged, not forgetting the numerous helpers and the President of the Malta Powerboat Federation.

Sunday’s endurance race was held in rather calm water with Metamarine adapting itself well after ballast alignment and the smoother seas producing a demanding win and resulting in a commanding position at the top of the classification. This was the seventh event being staged and for sure with what happened a few weeks earlier, Reuben
