From my end I have looked back at a few of the fabulous cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show and I have started sharing my experience with the Audi A1 Sportback, our long term test drive right now. Plus I have also dared to voice my opinion on the much talked about traffic situation which we are hearing so much about recently. Pierre Vella starts off his first of more test drives from Stuttgart where he recently was invited to go clean with Porsche whilst Ben Glover has a look at emissions and the future of clean cars.

This year the Frankfurt Motor Show was held as of mid September and it was the best beginning we could have had to the new season of Wheelspin on TV. A motor show like this deserves to be given its fair share of pages and this time we are going to try to increase the amount of images of these wonderful cars we got to see so up close and personal! We will start with the fabulously sporty vehicles which ahhhh, are so overwhelming! One such car is the new Concept by Mercedes Benz, the Mercedes Benz AMG Vision Grand Turismo1, followed by a car from a different brand but with a similar name, the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo2. Then there was the beautiful Lamborghini Huracán LP

1

610-4 Spyder3 and the magnificent blue car from the, usually red, Ferrari brand, the Ferrari 488 Spider4. And to top up the sporty numbers one cannot leave out the Jaguar C-X75, the Spectre 007 James Bond vehicle. Wow what a thrill to have seen this vehicle so close up before even getting to see the movie!! There were other production cars which were just as striking and luxurious! Besides the concept vehicle, Mercedes also presented the new Mercedes C Class Coupe5, a beautiful vehicle which is sporty yet elegant, as well as the Mercedes S Class Cabriolet and the new Mercedes A Class which has been given a thorough face lift.

Then, of course there are the cars that are presented here in this fabulously grandiose motoring event. Breathtaking for sure,

Porsche excelled with the Porsche Mission E6, an electric vehicle with outstanding figures for an electric car. With a range of 500km in full electric, this vehicle is proof that the future is electric without sacrificing on drive and performance. Porsche’s 911 Carrera7 too was worth exploring following the face lift on both the exterior and interior and the upgrade to the engines.

10

SUV’s are the ‘in’ thing right now and many were the ones to catch our eyes. The new Kia Sportage10 is definitely a beauty following the new face lift as is the new Renault Kadjar which has since arrived on our shores and which we can’t wait to drive. Another SUV which is very attractive is the Citroen C4 Aircross which we hope will eventually make it to Malta. The new BMW X111 and 7

When it comes to luxury, BMW have also struck gold with the new BMW 7 series8, an executive vehicle with outstanding technology and an interior fit for kings! Audi

on the other hand presented the new Audi A49 and the new Audi S4, two vehicles with lavish looks and superior technology.

the new 2nd generation VW Tiguan12 were also unveiled in Frankfurt! These stunning crossover and crossover SUV are slightly larger than the model they replace besides both offering better technology and better efficiency.

When it comes to the important C Segment vehicles, the new Renault Megane13 was truly impressive. After 20 years this model has truly grown into a young looking, modern vehicle. Opel also presented the new Astra14, also very attractive and with the technology to literally keep one constantly connected thanks to the On Star system.

Lastly the two concepts by Citroen! The Aircross concept21 is an SUV spelling out convenience and comfort and the Cactus M22, a truly fun car for the sun, sea and sand lovers. How about that for diversity and choice?

Concepts however were certainly some of the most celebrated vehicles in Frankfurt. These future vehicles are definitely worth close examination as they give a clear indication of what designers are willing to come up with to astonish. Amongst these is the Peugeot Fractal17, a sports car with an astounding sound system that compares to some of the best recording studios worldwide, truly

So maybe now you can imagine why the smile couldn’t leave my face in the few days spent in Frankfurt! I must admit, the smile has gladly returned just thinking back to all these fabulous vehicles I had the pleasure of seeing so closely. Until the next motor show! We will be there once again smiling!

Peugeot presented a striking number, the new 308 Gti15, a sport version with exhilarating performance figures. As for MINI, the new MINI Clubman16 was the car in centre stage and has this car grown to become a practical one!

impressive! Then there was the VW Golf Sport GTE18, a sporty striking vehicle and the SEAT Leon Cross Sport19, a crossover Coupe with looks that amaze. Audi too surprised us with the Audi e-tron Quattro20 electric vehicle and this

OFF, ON, AND DRIVE AWAY WORDS AND IMAGES PIERRE VELLA

A

s a devotee towards electromobilty, driving around in silence is somewhat my normal way of life. This somewhat changed during my updated encounter with the Porsche E-Hybrid. I said updated as around two years ago I had experienced the first generation of the Porsche hybrid. At the time I was at the famous F1 circuit Hungaroring, and honestly I was more interested in taking the circuit flat out than having to look at my consumption figures. At the time, I can recall, I tried out the Porsche Panamera and I was impressed with the hybrid acceleration. Permit me to clarify that, that day the complete Porsche range was available and yes we did race. 10

of instrumentation makes this SUV simply incredible. Over the years I am appreciating even more the functionality of SUVs which can easily accommodate all driving experiences, with Porsche going a step further being the first SUV in its E-Hybrid segment. Now let’s make it clear, driving off to start your economy drive from the excitement that reigns in front of the Porsche Empire is quite impressive. The task was a drive of 53kms to the north of Stuttgart then to return to our point of departure. The route was a mix of motorway and city driving. Along the road we had to abide with speed restrictions. Obviously on the motorway we had to maintain a sustainable speed. These driving experiences come with quite a bit of fun but due to the fact we drive on the wrong side of the road, tackling the first roundabout is always a daunting experience. So I teamed up with my Cypriot colleague and joyfully we got to the first roundabout the correct way. Joking apart, the Cayenne sitting high up does not create a sense of dominance but creates a sense of belonging. As this was an economy drive, comfort mode was selected, automatic but gentle on the accelerator plus air conditioner switched off even though the weather was simply incredible.

Well this time it was something completely different. Porsche have come a long way with the E-Hybrid, now giving the greatest possible efficiency and performance plus a rather unique driving experience while all electric. On test were the Panamera S and the Cayenne S, starting off our test drive in front of the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. I opted for the Cayenne S E-Hybrid to do our economy test. Now this might seem strange but sitting down in a Cayenne S E-Hybrid makes you feel unique. Even though sharing the same interior as the Panamera, the Cayenne gives you a feeling of total control. The refined interior, with a rather complex yet simple cluster

by Pierre Vella

It was my first experience with the Cayenne in traffic and it was simply impressive! Acceleration was smooth, steering, handling just right, enough pressure to give the driver the sense of always being in charge. All controls are within arm’s reach even though my main concern was the recovery dial and the central console screen that monitored what was happening within the car recovery and ICE. To be quite honest I had my eyes more on the road considering the traffic we were encountering. On the motorway is where the fun started as we could experience the hybrid at its best. The rev counter dropping instantly does give you a fright but you soon realize that the drive is completely electric. Seamless is when the ICE joins in the power, just

a whining noise that indicates that the battery is getting supplementary power or being charged. Half way along the drive, I was really enjoying myself and doing quite well considering the Cayenne S E-hybrid is powered by a supercharged three litre V6 engine plus a synchronous electric motor, totalling a combined output of 416hp. I was trotting at a mere 75 kilometres an hour on average and consumption figures were impressive illustrating 1.8litre/100km. However prior to commencing our economy trip I recalled Porsche Le Mans driver Mark Webber driving the same car and I believe he hit the boost level. Well we are all humans and it is acceptable to sin occasionally. Making sure I was clear, I floored the accelerator, jolting my companion who nearly fell asleep with the smooth drive. Simply majestic! The acceleration, the stability and the roar of the engine was very worth forfeiting being a winner for the day. The Cayenne four wheel drive created a progressive and directional acceleration yet it was nothing brutal but simply fantastic. My colleague soon gave me the looks, well yes my consumption figures misbehaved but during that accelerated period Porsche DNA was at its Best. Back to good-behaviour mode, we negotiated midday traffic in Stuttgart. Being E-Hybrid you just have to concentrate on your driving. WHEELSPIN

Propulsion is all done automatically, a flicker of the rev counter indicates power changing and battery charging. By then we were at our starting place, customary the first to arrive, parking the car at the majestic foyer of the Porsche museum. It was results time. I knew I had failed for having misbehaved but I guess it was all worth it. Little did I know that my overall result was an incredible 3.5litre/100 kms. The winner walked away with an unbelievable 2.9litre/100kms. I am sure that my E-Hybrid thrill will continue in our next issue as we still have to recall the Panamera S experience plus hitting the German forests again with the incredible Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

FEATURE• Traffic… The Topic Most Days! by Fleur Balzan

Let’s start with the amount of cars registered in Malta. How can a country with approximately 500,000 inhabitants have over 344,000 cars registered? The answer is simple. There are too many cars which are no longer road worthy and shouldn’t be on the road. How these manage to get through the VRT testing is a question I can never get a reply to, and yet there they are sometimes slowing the traffic or, worse, filling our air in fumes. On several occasions I have argued that for these to disappear from our roads we need stricter surveillance and better prices on new cars through the reduction in the registration tax. Maybe one would say that this would remove one car and replace it with another, but then owners would refrain from giving old vehicles to the young drivers in the family. The reason being that, in case of an accident, the car is a ‘karrakka’ anyway! The scrappage scheme is helping out to a certain extent but for it to be more effective, the amount given for scrappage would need to increase from the present rate. At least to the same rate it was when it was first introduced some years back.

S

o we have chosen to join everybody else in the topic of the year, as one may describe it. We have deliberated the discussion of this subject for a while now, listening to the various ‘experts’ discuss the issue with everybody else, but maybe it’s about time we voice our opinion too. And it is nothing but that! Getting stuck in traffic is everybody’s nightmare, be it drivers driving their own vehicles or those taking private transport. So how has it come to this? For sure this hasn’t been the nightmare to happen overnight. It has definitely been a long time coming.

The reduction of the circulation tax on small engined motorcycles is a step in the right direction too, however I will not delve further on this since, in my opinion, roads locally are far from perfect for motorcycle use. In the past years some so called ‘engineers’ came up with the decision to build some main roads with one lane instead of with two. It may not be convenient to change these roads back now but how about having further surveillance on cars being driven at much slower speeds than is the norm. I am not saying that someone cannot drive at 50km on a 70km road but for Christ’s sake, 20km when one cannot be overtaken just results in road anger for those that do not have the time for it! Something needs to be done also when accidents happen on these roads. Unfortunately even in bumper

14

WHEELSPIN

to bumper situations, time is lost filling forms in the middle of the road as there is no place to park the car on the side of it. Maybe taking pictures of both vehicles, the area of the accident and pictures of registration plates should be considered proof enough of an accident by insurance companies. Anything that may help in hurrying up the process in such situations! It is being said that horses or horse driven carts cannot be driven on main roads but where is the control in this? Driving from home to work I meet with either a horse driven cart or a tractor regularly when these shouldn’t be on the road in the first place. But what’s there to stop them? One other common vision on the road nowadays is cars with foreign number plates. I believe something is being done to regularise these vehicle right now. It is not mainly the ‘getting away’ with not paying the registration that is relevant to this subject but mainly the fact that, because these cars are not registered, they are freely double parked in the middle of roads, blocking the flow of traffic. Obviously because, any fine given to these owners, is never recuperated by the state. The idea of having tolls on certain roads is ridiculous in a country like ours. Anything of the sort would be a means of increasing revenue for the government not a solution to this ever growing problem. I am going to keep the hottest of the topics to the end as I’m sure I will be met with a lot of comments and confrontations on this. I am referring to public transport. Even though some may presently crave for the old busses and the systems we had in place before the Arriva era, I remember there were many a complaint in those times too. So what went wrong with the public transport issue?

local councils and localities may have a lot to do with it. Probably also the fact that the previous owners of buses ran their own ‘business’, meaning that, the exact figures of how many people used public transport were never really known. Due to this, the busses chosen then by Arriva were not appropriate for the several hours of service that was required from them. We all heard the stories of fires or busses breaking down then. That situation resulted in people losing their faith in public transport and opting to use their own vehicle to get to and from work. Some even bought a vehicle simply to avoid using buses. It will be very difficult to reverse the trend now. Maybe one should try an experiment to have just busses on the road for one day or two, or just busses and vehicles with 3 or more people in them, at least at particular hours. If this had to be considered, there would need to be an increase in the schedule of busses to have at least 1 bus leaving each location every 5/10 minutes. If the times are kept and if one gets to his or her destination in a decent time due to the ‘forced’ reduced traffic, people just might give public transport another shot. If it works however, the public transport company would need to guarantee the possibility of frequent trips. With a frequent and decent service, who wouldn’t opt to leave the car at home and avoid the time wasted to find a parking spot?

The above are just opinions but we are curious to see what other suggestions you the reader may have. Go on, tell us about them. I’m sure everyone agrees that should anyone come up with a solution, he or she would deserve the highest award given locally. Send your ideas on wheelspin@b.rightnewmedia.com .

TEST DRIVE • The New Audi A1 Sportback by Fleur Balzan

: Our Sporty long term test drive : Would love to drive this car on a race track!! I have chosen to start with the drive when it comes to the Audi A1 Sportback as truly this factor is something that tops the scales on everything else on this ‘hatchback’ model. This may be the smallest Audi model but physical size is the only thing that makes this Audi different to its larger siblings. Everything else is pure Audi!

The New

When it comes to the looks, the car has smooth and distinct side lines with a slightly curvy profile, which gives it that mature image. On the inside the car is truly Audi. With a modern yet rich interior, a smooth dashboard lighting up beautifully in a bright red, contrasting with the black dashboard and a multimedia screen which comes out from the same dashboard and which gives so much info about the car, the drive and the other features being offered, the car is truly luxurious. I admit, I am still experimenting with the variety of features that the car offers but let’s just mention a few at this point in our test drive.

voice command by simply pressing a button on the steering wheel, saying the word ‘call’ and choosing who to call from your list of numbers. Well,

I must say that with well over 1200 numbers on my list of contacts, I did confuse the system that little bit. But then one has the option to speak out the telephone number one wants to call or else move to the list of calls received or missed, all after pressing the same button. Very convenient

radio stations, which also may be chosen through voice command, and other car information and media information which I’m sure we’ll speak about in more detail when it comes to the next article about this particular test drive. We are only at the beginning of our experience with the Audi A1 Sportback and we are still discovering things about it every day. When it comes to atmosphere, the car is classy, even more so in the evenings when the interior lights up with light coming from the doors and from near the foot pedals. Another thing which is very comfortable when one gets accustomed to it is the ‘walk me home’ feature. This means that when one exits the vehicle at night or in the garage, the car lights remain on for a while to give enough time for the driver and passengers to be ‘shown’ the road or pavement around them. One can really get used to such pampering!

As much as I hate saying bye to a car I’ve been driving for a while, deep down I’m always wondering which car will be the next to reside in my garage for the following few months. Obviously with my kind of job, I am nearly never disappointed, so you can imagine how pleased I was when I realised that I would be driving the new Audi A1 from the beginning of the new season. I collected the car soon after our arrival from the fabulous Frankfurt Motor show and so my eyes had had quite an overdose of beauties on four wheels. Or maybe not!! To be honest, I had already taken the car out for a spin and a little bit of filming before taking it home some days later. Due to this I was already excitedly aware about the kind of drive I was going to be experiencing. 16

WHEELSPIN

The Audi A1 Sportback is a five door ‘small’, sporty car with a big heart! The model I am driving is the 1.6 litre TDi with a 7 speed S tronic gearbox producing 116 bhp and with CO2 as low as 97g/km. The car accelerates beautifully, especially after the initial fraction of a second delay, which is common on automatic gearboxes, and the torque is simply incredible! And if one wants to feel the immediate acceleration of a

manual gearbox, one may switch to the manual controls from the same gear leaver. Thrilling when the roads are clear but I must admit, the automatic in traffic is easy to get accustomed to. During all this, the car has excellent road grip and handling, also at higher speeds, making taking corners an experience that will make one smile every time.

Well, through the multimedia system one may connect to the Bluetooth for hands free talking. And so? One may ask! Isn’t it a norm nowadays? Well this is not just any Bluetooth system. It offers the facility of making calls through

when one spends a lot of time in the car, whilst wanting to continue with ones work! The same multimedia system serves as a screen for the parking assist with the assistance of the

So we are no longer sure this is a small car after all. Luckily we have a few more months driving it, and enjoying its services which are nothing short of a sport luxury vehicle synonymous with the name AUDI!

FEATURE • Emissions – The Future

by Ben Glover

But are we bothered? No. I am certainly not. Let’s face it, our old buses emitted more NOx levels going through Sliema than its entire daily service. We didn’t bother about it then, in actual fact some of us miss them. Back in the 1970’s when our grandparents imported British models and replaced the petrol engine with a Japanese diesel block we had no issues there either. So why should we be shocked now? It is all about trust. When you buy a car you always want value for money, great economy, comfort and reliability. Speed and performance have not really been high on the agenda for most of us as the islands are too small for motorway routes. We drive the car we do now because our parents told us to, or at least in essence influenced us. Vehicles are bought via reputation and so the only real thing that shocks us are the jokes. Facebook has been awash with the memes including smoking steam trains with car maker’s logos, I know I have been tagged in plenty. Laughing it off is easy! I drive a VW Golf… petrol. My classic is a MK III and twenty three years of age, of course the emissions are not going to be perfect. So what is the future when it comes to tackling this issue?

by BEN GLOVER

I

t was only a matter of time before some other big names joined the ‘emissions scandal’. With Volkswagen literally coming out and letting the world know that over 11 million of its diesel engines have been fitted with carbon monoxide ‘cheating’ software, we knew it wasn’t long before others would jump on the wagon. Recently three other firms have allegedly confessed to the same topic according to some of the world’s press. All diesel engines have to pass the NEDC test, set up to cut air pollution but it has failed as manufacturers design cars to be better in lab conditions than on the road.

18

WHEELSPIN

The EU and other big countries around the world require levels to be such an output that we don’t damage the environment. You could argue it is their pressure on the big car

companies that is forcing them to cheat the system and so I am not surprised that some felt the urge to do what they did to their vehicles across the entire range or ownership. Yes we can all drive electric powered vehicles but is our grid system in Malta up to the challenge? I think not. We can just about make it through the summer without a boiler at the local power station going offline. Hybrid? Maybe! There are some pretty hybrids out there (the BMW i8, Porsche GTE) but with our

island being so small it would not have enough charge to survive our average 10 minutes and short distance journey to work, let alone being stuck in traffic both ends of the day. Petrol and diesel will soon run out, gas is too dangerous and public transport – let’s not go there. Cycling is a pastime that is growing here but until we see suitable education and dedicated cycle routes it will be a dangerous choice of transport. We are stuck. But there is an engine that has been developed that runs purely thanks to water. Just read that last sentence again.

Yes, water. The stuff that has surrounded us for thousands of years! Germany has managed to create the first batches of diesel fuel with a net-zero carbon footprint — made from carbon dioxide (CO2), water and renewable energy sources such as wind or solar power. Malta has already ticked the boxes: sun, water and wind. How does it work? Manufacturing WHEELSPIN

FEATURE• Have A Laugh On Us by Mark Attard

SOMEONE AT THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP locked the owner’s keys inside his car. While the locksmith was working on the driver’s-side door lock, the anxious owner walked up and tried the passenger’s-side door. It opened. The locksmith looked up. “Yeah, I already got that one.”

A WOMAN gets onto a bus with her baby. The bus driver says, “That’s the ugliest baby that I’ve ever seen. Ugh!” The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, “The driver just insulted me.” The man says, “There’s no call for that. You go right up there and tell him off. Go ahead, I’ll hold your monkey for you.”

AN ADVERTISEMENT for a car driving school claimed it could teach anyone to drive a car in five minutes or less.

I WAS DRIVING HOME last night when, all of a sudden, I approached a traffic jam. Just ahead there were people gathering around a woman who had been knocked over, so I jumped out of my car and dashed over.

A man called them up and asked, “How can you teach anyone to drive in five minutes or less?” They answered. “It’s a crash course.”

A WEEK AGO I was in the passenger seat while my friend was driving. We come to a red light and he speeds up and whips right through it. I start freaking out “Hey man, you’re going to get us killed!” He replies “Relax, my brother drives like this.”

“Out the way!” I said, pushing through the crowd. “Are you a doctor?” one woman asked, moving aside. “No,” I replied, pulling the woman to the sidewalk. “The match starts in 10 minutes.”

A HUSBAND buys his wife a car for her birthday. “I don’t like it” she says, “I want a car that goes from 0-140 in 3 seconds.” So he comes back with a set of bathroom scales and says “just step on it and your wish will come true!”

We come to another red light and he blazes right through. “You’re going to get arrested or get us killed!” “Relax, this is how my brother drives.” We come to a green light he stops dead looking both ways. “Dude, it’s green you can go.” “Nah man, my brother might be coming the other way.” 22

Sicily – The Catania Pescheria Next time you are in Catania do something completely different. Take a break from shopping and treat yourself to a leisurely mid morning coffee in one of the rather up-market cafes in the Piazza Duomo. If you haven’t been for some time you are in for a surprise. The piazza, now a pedestrian zone, has had a good cleanup and the Duomo, with all the sooth and grime gone, is looking splendid with its imposing baroque façade. But that’s on the way, passing through so to speak. Your destination is just round the corner, the fish market, the Pescheria.

bedlam reigns, it is an experience, the noise, the enthusiasm, the hustle and bustle; it will be ringing in your ears all day. Fishmongers, male and female bellowing in competition, and the variety, wow. Endless amounts of different fresh fish, tossing

and turning, as chaotic as their surroundings, and mound of shell fish of every description. A feast for the eyes It truly is worth a visit, almost an education.

This is a morning do; it’s all over by early afternoon. In the meantime 24
