A new Season of Wheelspin commences and with it starts the celebration of the TV programme’s 15th year in broadcasting and the magazine’s 6th year in circulation. Quite a feat we think! How many TV programmes are still on air after 15 years? The answer to that would bring around too few names and even less when one considers those programmes that have remained loyal to their original concept, as Wheelspin has. So as to start this celebration, here comes another packed issue with articles about our different travels and the many cars launched worldwide. Over the summer, Wheelspin attended the World Media Launch of the Smart fortwo and the forfour whilst early in October Wheelspin was also present at the Paris Motor Show to attend the several launches from different brands. Ben Glover also attended the Goodwood Revival which he writes about here.

Pierre on the other hand writes about his trip to Austria and his experience driving the BMW M3. His love for speed is also made clear in his article about the Air Show whilst he tells us how, thanks to him, many got to meet with Stefano Domenicali.

PARIS IS PARIS! T

here is nothing like an international motor show to give us a positive jump start for the new season! The Paris Motor Show is somewhat special obviously because of the location. Paris is

Paris, a land of love and passion, in this case a land where the passion for beautiful cars can thrive!

C

Although not the largest European Motoring event, the Paris Motor Show is far from small. One has to walk and walk and walk a little more to get from one hall to another. When one is working on getting the maximum filming done in a short period, days have to be organised in advance so as not to lose time going back and forth between the stands for interviews and presentations. This is by no means an easy task and requires a lot of coordination, but thankfully the whole Wheelspin team works together on such projects. Besides we always have a very early start to the day and nobody ever complains when we are some of the last to leave the show at the end of the day. This results in our getting to see quite a few of the brands during our few days at the show besides managing quite an amount of footage too! 1

By Fleur Balzan

So which were the cars that most caught our eyes in Paris? Well, although usually there is always a particular favourite for me personally, this year I must say that my dream cars have to be two. Two from the high end, luxuries and possibly competing brands. There was the newest sport car from Mercedes, the sculpted Mercedes AMG GT(1) with an immediately recognisable Mercedes face yet with a rear that reminds me more of a Porsche. Then there was the MINI Concept Super Leggera(2), a convertible MINI that looks very different to the MINI as we know it today. It is more like a classic convertible from the 60’s yet with a tinge of modernity to make it so, but so, desirable!

2

5 If I had to speak for the boys it may be that their favourite was the Ferrari 458 Speciale(3) seeing that they just couldn’t get out of the vehicle. Thankfully we are always welcome at the Ferrari stand which, if I may add, is not open to all media except from behind a low glass wall. So we are even more honoured that we get to visit the Ferrari stand throughout, in every motor show, and also manage an interview too! BMW Group had practically a hall on their own featuring the BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce brands and many were the vehicles presented in this show. In fact BMW chose Paris for the World Premiere of their newest convertible, the BMW 2 Series convertible, a model replacing the BMW 1 series convertible, production of which has been stopped completely. Hmmmm, I wonder why that would be! The 2 series convertible is beautiful with fine distinctive lines and obviously longer than the 1 series convertible. Actually it is closer in size to the 3 series which begs the question again why BMW would stop their smallest convertible which had extended their segments to attract a different clientele. None the less it is a beauty and I lost myself staring at it on more than one occasion.

Concept vehicles are always an exceptional experience to see close up and this year’s Concepts were no different. A stunning concept presented at this motor show was definitely one from Toyota. The Toyota C-HR Hybrid(6) is a crossover, a much desired vehicle in such segment for the brand. Featuring Toyota’s hybrid technology this car 6

BMW Group had more presentations during this event including another World Premiere, the new BMW X6, the French premiere of the 2 Series Active Tourer and the presentation of the BMW i8 plug in hybrid sport car, amongst other vehicles on show. For the MINI brand, the new 5 door MINI(4) was launched. This is similar in looks to the standard MINI hatchback but features 5 doors, something which will appeal to MINI lovers who require this commodity! Daimler too had other presentations besides the already mentioned, sportily sexy Mercedes AMG GT including the C63 AMG featuring the same engines and

4

technology as presented on the AMG GT. For Smart they also showed the newest smart fortwo and smart forfour(5), the media world launch of which we, the Wheelspin team, had attended in Berlin during the summer. These latest 2 City Cars from SMART are young, colourful, technology filled, and very different to the previous models and definitely more appealing not only in looks but also in drive. They should be out in the market worldwide as of November 2014, including in Malta.

is mouth dropping! Muscular towards the rear, yet curvy towards the front and with a domineering face, this car is striking! It features 3D like rear lights which are attractive, and windows which continue from the front in a slim line towards the rear which too make it so appealing. Peugeot had some distinctive concept vehicles on show which are quite different from each other. The Peugeot Exalt(7) is a more futuristic sedan with a fin like rear and with a luxury feel to it. Even the inside dashboard is said to

This was the Citroen C4 Cactus Airflow(9) a car featuring the brands hybrid technology which results in this vehicle using only 2 litres of fuel every 100km.

The second concept from Peugeot was the Peugeot Quartz(8), this time a muscular crossover with

than the recently launched C1. Yet another French brand is Renault which featured their newest concept, the Renault Eolab(11). This is a very futuristic looking vehicle which, like the Citroen and Peugeot concepts, gives a clear idea of how the french brands are combining aerodynamices, low curb weight and cutting edge powertrain technology for better fuel efficiency. This vehicle is said to use only 1 litre of fuel per 100 km while the brand is quoting the amount of 22g/km of CO2 emissions. With a gas-electric hybrid powertrain, this concept is one to watch out for! suicide doors. Both concepts feature Peugeot’s hybrid technology meaning that both cars have Peugeot’s 1.6 litre turbocharged engine combined to an electric motor, with the Quartz having two electric motors for more power. These two models reach a combined power of 340 bhp and 500bhp respectively.

Renault Twingo is also one of the vehicles which should reach our shores very soon!

C So this is why Paris is Paris,

it may be an old city but it’s a city in which the future, in this case, of vehicles, comes to life!

11

Other vehicles on the Peugeot stand were, the 208 GTi 30th anniversary limited edition, the new Peugeot 508 and the 108 amongst others. Citroen too presented a Concept vehicle on their stand based on the recently presented Citroen C4 Cactus. 9

heelspin was present in Berlin during the summer to attend the media world launch of two new vehicles from Smart, the smart fortwo and the smart forfour.

This was quite a different event since the cars were not revealed to the media present until the end of the event. Hints about the car were however everywhere, from the presentation of the chassis of both the fortwo and forfour to hints about the design, technology and audio system. On arriving at the launch one immediately felt the kind of atmosphere SMART wanted to convey to the media present. The atmosphere was youthful with the participation of the German beach volley teams playing their game on the court provided. It was also colourful and artistic thanks to the different bands playing their tunes and the different artists working on their creations on boards provided

on the floors as well as on the walls in the halls where the still covered vehicles were ‘on show’. Then finally at the end of the day these two new vehicles were unveiled, and what a colourful presentation it was! The smart fortwo is different to the previous models. This new model actually has a short bonnet when the previous was practically flat on the front and it has an even better turning circle which now stands at 6.9 metres. The smart forfour is based on the 2 seater version yet is a 5 door hatchback. Both come in a wide range of colours with both the body and the interior available in two tone.

They also have an ultra modern, technology filled dashboard with features usually found in higher segment vehicles. The engines available on both are to 1.0 litre non-turbo reaching 71bhp and a 0.9 litre turbo reaching 90bhp. There is now a choice of 2 gearboxes, including a 5 speed manual gearbox and a DCT twinamic. SMART presented these two vehicles to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show and having been amongst the first to set eyes on these cars, we now can’t wait to drive them!

TEST DRIVES • The Magnificent M of BMW by Pierre Vella

Words and Images Pierre Vella

W

e were circling Salzburg airport, very late in the evening. I could not see anything from the aircraft window apart from a thunderstorm which the pilot was doing his utmost to avoid. Salzburg airport is not one of the easiest to land at, especially at night with a blistering cross wind and a thunderstorm heading your way. It had been raining for countless days, no sign of any summer and we were already in September. My brief visit to Salzburg was not actually sightseeing but fact finding. Well yes Salzburg is Mozart, Sound of Music but unfortunately this had to be sidelined for this time. Well to a certain extent as somehow my type of music was going to be experienced.

The next day I woke up to sun shine coming through my hotel window. Looking out I could just make out the blue sky. At times someone up there just decides to give the chance and I took it. Everyone was talking about the great weather on the day and I was not complaining especially when I arrived at my destination to meet up with what I would be joining for the day. “Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept,” explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH, yes that is correct my companion for the day was the 2015 BMW M3. There was something at that moment to give goose bumps. A Marina blue coloured example was getting ready 10

WHEELSPIN

to spend some value time together. I was eagerly looking towards the heavens and the weather man seemed to be on my side. The colour of the car reflected in the heavens. The roads in Salzburg, even though having been drenched with rain were already practically dry. That was a relief. At least I knew I could keep the car clean. That is me! Well a brief roundabout tour and I was inside this magnificent car. The interior was white which gave a sense of openness. I adjusted the driving position, lately taking particular attention to the position of the steering wheel, side mirrors and yes, realizing I was to be driving on the wrong side of the road for the rest of the day, I set the navigation, for all its worth, and

was ready to drive off. A turn of the key, press the start stop button and everything came alive. I opted to go easy and set the M3 to comfort and efficiency. The controlled growl was quite audible as I moved out of my parking bay. A spacious four door with ample space at the back and a generous rear boot yet the car never let off that sporty impression. I like to have a high seating position and this was no problem with the M3 as roof height is adequate. I tend to like to gauge my end car perimeters even though the car in question was armed with parking and distant sensors. I was soon in the midst of morning traffic. The gleaming Marina coloured M3 was a sight. I was hooted from behind as I was admiring the car being

reflected, believe it or not, mirrored on a competitors showroom window.

to take a break and enjoy the scenery with camera in hand.

A blend of elements working in perfect harmony delivers outstanding performance, precision and agility. Through traffic the car behaves well considering the massive power in store beneath the front bonnet. I was soon relieved of traffic and decided to take the great country roads around Salzburg. I soon started to gain confidence with the car and started to push. I needed to adjust myself to the central bulge of the bonnet. Being abroad I opted to utilize the HUD (Head Up Display) which is a great gadget to maximize your attention to the road and enjoy the drive. The three main options that control engine management, steering and suspension are all within arm’s reach on the central console and closest to the driver on LHD models so it gives the ability to select any different option whilst still driving. The uphill winding roads were a treat. The car being rear wheel drive was pushing hard. Traction on the slightly damp road was incredible, steering direction was accurate in all aspects. One has to consider I was in 4th gear, normal (economical) mode, automatic and climbing high with the road changing direction at every corner. These are the joys of life! You become one with the car.

Looking at the M3 from a distance one has to appreciate the sporty lines that adorn this four door saloon. It is definitely an ample family car with a mischievous temper in a good sense. There are various body aspects that called for a detailed look, both front and rear vents, even though these cannot be viewed together. There is a sense of continuity, the bulging rear mudguards are just incredible, as is the stepped carbon fibre roof and most intriguing, the side mirrors. On their own these are just a work of art. This car gets a 5 star rating for the outside configuration. A lot of attention to detail which has outclassed most of the competition in this sector.

I was suddenly getting indications that the road ahead was coming to an end due to road works. Now I realized why I was practically doing a hill, sorry mountain climb, on my own. Yes I did arrive at a dead end and ventured through a narrow road to get myself back on track. But luckily I ended up in a fantastic place where it was time

So there was nothing that I disliked. Well I did give a mention to that bulge on the bonnet. I needed time to get used to it but it did not take that long. Leaving the postcard scenario, it was time to test the specs of the car. All settings to sport and sport plus and the car was practically transformed. From a cuddly spacious family car to something that has just got pumped up! The first impact the sound, this is just mind-blowing. I switched to manual paddle shift in neutral flicking the accelerator, the car growled, first gear and without excessive revving the car accelerated like mad. The odometer and rev counter were hitting unbelievable limits, the paddle shift was incredible and smooth and I was soon hitting the maximum speed limit in such a short time. I down shifted and once more the car was fierce yet docile, no jerking movement but a transition of instant

speed almost transparent. Switch off traction control and I could be beating our local drift team with the amount of power being shredded on the rear transmission. Simply incredible! Next on test was lane shifting. Again here no body roll, the excellent seats held my lower body in place and the steering wheel pressure feel was just right. Bare in mind that we are driving a four door saloon car yet the immense joy is supreme. I saw a warning coming up on my HUD advising that I exceeded the speed limit yet the car had tons of power still unfazed. Once the pressure was released and fun was ecstatic, I switched everything back to normal mode and the car changed ambient not even believing that a few minutes earlier I was zooming past cars on the inside lane with so much power with cars dashing backwards. Hmm just to illustrate the speed I was doing. The new BMW M3 is just an incredible car, giving a willingness to continue driving stopping only to fill up with fuel. Engine spec are a 2975cc, six cylinder, 7 speed, double clutch automatic/paddle shift with an output of 431 bhp with M TwinPower Turbo technology, with two monoscroll turbochargers, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, fully variable valve timing (VALVETRONIC) and variable camshaft control (DoubleVANOS). It was time to head back to base but little did I know the M3’s big brother was also waiting to be introduced, the M4! Now however it is time to stop for a break. Oh yes I will be writing about the experience with the M4 too. For the time being I want to digest the sensational feeling of the BMW M(agnificient)3. WHEELSPIN

BMW unveiled 2 of their latest vehicles during a media launch held during August. These are the BMW 4 Series Grand Coupé and the BMW X4.

Zero is Hero with Renault The summer months saw the launch of the new Electric vehicles from Renault. Renault in fact presented 4 electric vehicles which goes to show how this brand may be overtaking everybody else when it comes to electric technology.

BMW 4 Series Grand Coupé and the BMW X4

The cars presented at this event, held at the Kind’s Autosales showroom, were the New Renault Zoe, the Renault Fluence, the Renault Kangoo and the smallest member of the Renault electric family, the Twizy. All vehicles may be viewed at the Renault Showroom in Lija.

Although these two vehicles have a number in common, they are very different from each other with the 4 Series Grand Coupé being a sedan with coupé looks whilst the X4 is a compact SUV. Both however express luxury and are filled with the newest BMW technologies as expected from this renowned brand. Both vehicles may be viewed at the Muscat Motors, BMW showroom in Gzira.

Citroen C1 and Citroen C4 Cactus and may also be ordered with a soft top roof. At first glance this is truly a fun car! Another car from Citroen has also made it to our shores during the summer months. This is the Citroen C4 Cactus, a crossover vehicle which is ‘different’ from other vehicles but

FEATURE• Goodwood Revival 2014 by Ben Glover

by Ben Glover

The event is a barrage of ‘wheel to wheel’ racing that attracts some of the sports’ most classic of petrol heads. From Sir Sterling Moss to Sir Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell you will step back in time and with the smell of the fuel in the open paddock you can be forgiven into thinking you really are stepping back in time. I love the build up to this event from being stuck in traffic behind the old classic vehicles to watching the endless vintage aircraft in a holding pattern above my house waiting to land at the historic airfield. Each year 40,000 people from all over the world are spectators or take part in Revival, each opting to don a period fancy dress costume that has the strict rule of pre-1966, when the circuit was at its peak with track racing. Lord March set up the event to recreate the atmosphere of a by-gone era, cars as well!

I

t’s over 21 degrees near Chichester on the south coast of the UK. I’m in a flight suit, a converted Top Gun themed outfit from a bachelor’s party and it’s an original RAF relic. It is olive green and made of thick cotton. I’m melting! The weather has turned out nice for the Goodwood Revival. I find myself walking through acres of classic cars, Porsche, Ferrari, Lotus, Mercedes... and this is just the car park.

While I am sat in the Press catering tent downing a traditional English roast dinner I sit just off the main grass runway. Around me I am hearing burbling V8’s, V12’s and many other normal aspirated engines that once pounded this historic race track many, many years ago. It’s not only the mechanics I can hear as the place is crammed pack with accents from all over the world (sadly no Maltese as yet!) But what is Goodwood Revival? Three days in September dedicated to the classic elite that will thrive on yesterday year. Set up in 1998 the Goodwood motor circuit plays host to cars and motorcycles that were from the golden period of 1948-1966 when the track was a major event on the racing calendar, including Formula 1.

14

WHEELSPIN

I opted for the RAF flying suit that still had the name of the airman that once donned it. Stepping into it and having that almost ‘musty’ scent about the material it makes you wonder what service this suit itself provided during the time with its owner. What sorties it flew (if any at all) and which squadron it was assigned to. I’ve added the Maltese flag to each shoulder. Why? We all know our history when it came to World War 2 and the roles Malta played yet we seem to forget something. Me adding these badges is a tribute to 100’s of Maltese ground crew who gave their time (and lives) to the efforts at RAF Luqa. It’s only a small tribute but means a lot to me.

faster than possibly the track could cope and it wasn’t until Lord March took over the 1200 acres did we see another racing car on the scene until 1998. Around me are Service men all dressed in their No.1 uniforms each carrying a ‘dolly bird’ on their arm. Gentlemen are expected to either dress like this or in jackets and hats. The ladies opt for the uniform or failing that a swinging 50’s or 60’s vintage polka dot dress, which on the day I arrived proved tricky with hands anchoring down the hems due to the strong breeze! A huge effort is made and for some costume hire shops in the area this is the weekend of profit. I reach the vast paddock, home to well over £3 million’s worth of machinery. Each driver gushing over his cars performance in the classic races of the weekend! And that smell. Fuel marrying carburettors, reminds me of the Mdina Grand Prix as the exhaust note bounces off the city walls, so Goodwood’s tune can be heard with that oncoming breeze. Even ‘Mr Bean’ (Rowan Atkinson) a true petrol head entered into a race only to be hit by a competing car in his Ford Falcon Sprint whilst competing in the Shelby Cup. Sadly I missed this race however in the Glover Trophy race (yes really!) one poor Ford Popular fell foul to the bumpy curves on the paddock straight. Gasps and horrified cries were heard as a rear wheel left its chassis and bounced down towards the grand stands, thankfully losing momentum as it hit the grass. Having a spot practically

just meters away from the track from the somewhat safety of the fence is what the event is all about. As I stand on the final chicane of tyre before the pit straight I’m taking in the smells of high octane fuel of Ferrari’s 250 GT’s, classic Jaguars and not to mention the raw breed of vintage Formula 1 cars. It’s hard to believe how anyone survived a crash with its open cockpit and lack of antiroll bars. These day’s drivers do not know how good they have it with monocock chassis married to carbon fibre body shells. As the smoke and dust settles, classic gasoline billboards line the side of the track and against the back drop of the amazing grand stand it is very easy to fall but into the past. With already many hours past, a couple of scuffs between metal and the tyre wall on the last corner, my time on this part of the track is done and I head for a coffee from the back of a converted Morris Traveller serving from a Delongi machine. The whole place is reeking of nostalgia! Revival is not just a time to show off fashion and machine but a great opportunity for major car manufacturers to display some new metal. Entering the ‘Earls Court’ build – a mix of 1930’s architecture there is that new car smell. From Range Rover, BMW, Ford and Aston Martin you can feast your eyes on forthcoming vehicles soon to hit our roads. It was a chance to view the future with the new BWW i8 hybrid car. But it’s not just the new. Vintage classics, such

The circuit itself, much like Luqa, is stepped in history. The land was acquired by the British Air Ministry in 1939 and known as RAF Westhampnett. It was a support base for nearby RAF Tangmere and its hard runway. It was ideal with the perimeter road (now the race track). Back then land owner Freddie March, Grandfather to now Lord March, was the passion behind motor racing at Goodwood. Sadly, none made their way over to our island (probably due to the terrible construction of them) however this black example is in pristine condition. The brand new Jaguar F-type flanked by its E-type counterpart is grabbing a lot of attention. Having an active airfield means attention is not just for the track and car lovers but those into aviation. The Spirit of Aviation show means getting up close and personal with propeller craft and their owners, all part of the event’s culture. From Cessnas to DC4 craft there is enough to satisfy any plane enthusiast. My attention is diverted to a familiar sound. A sound that we in Malta have heard many times echo off the harbour walls from those Rolls Royce Merlin’s. I am of course talking about the Spitfire. Three were on show

behold as this retro event celebrated its 50th year and the soundtrack was special. So special in fact, the main roads outside the circuit ground to halt to watch this marvel. Lorries, cars, bikes and even emergency vehicles watched the historic birds circling overhead. You could still hear it as you walked under the circuit through the main entrance tunnel, immense! The whole event is a vintage photograph that comes to life and I cannot wait for 2015. In fact, I shall reserve my costume now!

efore starting off I have to let you all into a little secret. From a very young age I always used to get oil soaked surrounded by engines and cars, however speed and sound were something I chased. It just happened that at the time, and now I am going back some forty odd years, I used to spend my Saturdays wandering around in park 1. Hmmm, most of you would say: ‘what park?’ Well this was the parking place next to the airport’s old control tower, the one closest to the village of Luqa. You might say: ‘what on earth are we getting at?’. At the time my uncle used to work with the Royal Air Force and he used to take me along for a day’s work. While he was working, I was having a great time, with the new arrival supersonic fighters. Lightning with the Hawker Hunter, the delta winged Javelin and later joined by the Victor and the Vulcan, the turbo prop Shakelton and Argosy.

that help towards the success of such events making up the Malta Aviation Society. Over the years things have changed, expenses have gone up and world crisis do hinder the assurance of having planes participating. The most unusual of all was last year when the participating Red Arrows had to stop half way on their trip to Malta due to technical problems. This year was an incredible year with three aerobatic teams participating, with the British Red Arrows celebrating their fifty years of flying. Then there was the Italian Frecce Tre Colore and the Spanish Patrulla Aguila. The availability of the airport parking area is an asset to the organizers as in Malta there is just one operational airport. Both Italian and British aerobatic teams were parked away from the crowds, giving more space to the static aircrafts on display. There were also the local companies who filled up an incredible

Most of you from a younger generation are already going on the internet to find the origin of these aircrafts. I was in a way blessed at the time because I was living a dream and this dream is rekindled in a different way when the Annual International Air Show is staged here in Malta. Before discussing briefly what was in store during the air show, I definitely have to single out a super dedicated person, Joe Giliberti, a person who lives in the clouds in a metaphorical way. The International Air Show is his creation and his passion towards this event is just indescribable. Joe is surrounded by an excellent team of aero devotees 18

Ex Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali was in Malta to deliver a talk to the Malta Institute of Professional Engineers and what a mesmerizing talk it was. But let’s go chronological about how this came around.

Testing a car to its limits - SEAT of a different kind are also carried out on this sort of terrain to guarantee that no dust gets inside the car even in the most extreme situations.

Before being marketed, a vehicle is put through different tests in extreme conditions in countries all over the world. Tests are done by a team of 50 technicians and engineers from SEAT’s Technical Centre. Summer Tests are done in the desert with a series of checks done at temperatures of over 40ºC. Each model is driven over some 20,000 kilometres with each test carried out to reach a goal. The car travels behind a dense cloud of dust for almost two hours. Tests

The car is driven over gravel for some 3,000 kilometres so as to analyse the impact of the gravel on the entire area of the underbody, wheel wells, external and rear end of the bumper. In the klapper test, checks are carried out to make sure that the more than 3,000 parts comprising the car do not make annoying noises. Tests also check stability control systems with the latest software modifications. These are carried out on low-grip tracks then confirmed on a track with bends of different curvature.

I was approached by the Institute to bring someone from the F1 scene and knowing that Stefano Domenicali is now out of F1, I immediately contacted him. Being a good friend, I felt he would give me an answer immediately. Well he did and it was a yes! Preparations on his trip started immediately, and decisions were taken on how to maximize his brief stay in Malta.

then in the evening Stefano gave the 200 invitees an incredible talk about F1. I was pinching myself because this was just surreal having him here with us. It was an incredible stay and a wonderful experience. The fact that I managed to get such a high profile

person, I made it a point that the media got the chance to meet up with him and even the audience had the opportunity to chat with this great man. Another box ticked! Well I think it was more of a page. An interview with Stefano will be aired on Wheelspin soon.

The moment he exitted the arrivals lounge I felt my heart missing a beat! What followed was just incredible. Meeting the UOM students from the Engineering faculty, the UOM rector

Sicily: Your tasty motoring holiday starts here… The Sicilian cuisine is the result of years of foreign occupation, it is a mixture of Italian, Greek, Arab,

Spanish and Norman cuisines; little wonder the diversity and the regional differences. The most marked difference is between the coastal areas and the countryside or inland regions. You can get an excellent introduction to inland cuisine at Osteria dei Sapori Perduti on Corso Umberto in Modica Bassa. It’s a quaint place, family run –very well run and hugely popular, price talks, loudly. The menu is in Sicilian dialect,

interesting but not to worry, there is an Italian, English etc translation with pictures. The Ravioli con sugo di maiale (alla Modicana) is just something, the soups with pasta a delight, so is the Spezzatino; the Cannoli so typically Sicilian and you will get away for less than € 20! You might even get a grappa for free if the owner is around! Try it family and friends will love it; it’s less than 30 minutes from the Catamaran.
