For the 3rd consecutive year, the WHC Ranch Horse Sale is blessed with the opportunity to auction off an authentic Billy Klapper bit. Once again, the Klapper 436 comes to us from the Estate of close friend and collector of Billy Klapper wares, Perry Johns.
We are grateful to Johns’ third cousin Ashley Gee—who referred to Johns as “Uncle Perry”— for spearheading these sales. Gee was Johns’ driver during her 20s when she served in the air force. Johns, also an air force veteran, relied on Gee to take horses across the county for him.
“He would call and say, ‘I’m going to fly you to this airport, and I’ll meet you there with a truck and a trailer. I need you to haul horses for me,’” Gee
recalls. “For 20 years I hauled horses for Uncle Perry.” When Johns passed in 2021, Gee and other family members were given charge of his bit collection, with the only instructions being to do with them what they wished.
“In our minds, this is an opportunity to do good,” Gee says. “They are not ours, they are not earned by us, but it’s an opportunity to do good, so that is what we are going to do.”
This year, Gee crossed paths with Green Beret and President of the board of Special Forces Foundation, Ignacio Garza, and soon realized it was “a God thing.” After learning of his own passion for horses and equine therapy, she was happy to have found the nonprofit organization to receive all the funds
raised through this year’s sale of the Klapper bit.
The Special Forces Foundation, an organization run by Green Berets for Green Berets, provides immediate and ongoing support to the Special Forces community and their families.
“The foundation’s goal is maximizing the amount of money raised and given back to the families,” Garza explains. “As Special Forces you have seen the worst of humanity and the challenges you face coming out of war are not new. Our hope is that how we treat those challenges, will be. We don’t look at throwing money
at a problem, we look at solving that problem with creative solutions.”
Gee is passionate about taking care of the people who have made this country what it is.
“I think there is a huge connection between the people who serve our country and the people who get up and serve our country in the ranching community,” she says. “I think bringing those two together is important. Because they make this country great.”

RBA Whatta Smoothman is a very personable, big boned, athletic prospect with a world of black type pedigree. His sire is a royally bred son of Smooth Talkin Style from Wayne and Chad Smith’s incredible program. His dam is an own daughter of an RHAA legend and World Champion, Quentice Mecom Blue, aka “Leroy” owned by Spires Ranch and shown by TJ Roberts. Don’t miss this great colt and the opportunity to holler at your “Next Man”.
Boone Askew was defined by his faith in Christ, desire to help his neighbors, and his cowboy spirit.
Boone Askew, the son of Shawn and Angela Askew, was raised in Albany and Comanche, Texas. Boone was called home at only 17 years old. From an early age, Boone realized his purpose in life was to be a cowboy. He went on to work at cattle ranches all across Texas. As Boone branched out and began to forge his own direction, it became his dream to breed and raise his own line of ranch horses. It is the wish of Boone’s family to continue his legacy with The Boone Askew “Next Man” Memorial Scholarship & Crisis Fund presented through the Western Heritage Classic. Proceeds from the sale of RBA Whatta Smoothman will be given to a deserving recipient at the 2026 WHC horse sale. The “Next Man” represents the way Boone lived his life. Helping a friend in need, giving sacrificially, and most of all answering God’s call to your purpose in life. Through this drive of life the family prays that when you hear God holler, then holler back!

Paxton Ramsey (806) 443-0366
The 7L Ranch, founded in 1904 by E.W. Boyt has been and still is a very traditionally run horseback operation! It is owned and operated, north of Amarillo, TX, by Paxton Ramsey and his daughter, Haidyn. It is both a cow / calf and yearling operation. At one time the ranch had nearly 200 brood mares but now down to roughly 45. We have pulled horses from ranchers such as Bill Smith, the Cogdell family, Tongue River, The Matador Ranch and Wayne Prewitt to improve our program. The current genetics focused on the most are Metallic Cat, Ten O Sea, Peptoboonsmal, Haidas Little Pep, and a few foundation King Ranch horses, just to name a few! Our goal is to raise a sizable horse of substance, stamina and a sound mind that still has the athletic ability of a smaller performance horse. We want to be able to market our horses to everyone from the working cowboy to the ropers to the cow horse family! We have been very blessed to make these horses such a large part of our livelihood and continue to always improve and pass forward this part of our heritage!

Our horse division is based in Guthrie, Tx where we run a remuda of 15 mares & have a resident stallion Bakers Boon a son of Once In A Blu Boon. We have worked hard at putting together a select group of cow & running bred mares which include daughters of Playgun, Playin Stylish, Big Cat Galarraga, Ten O Sea, Doctor Echo and Brimmerton. Along with breeding to our stud we also feel it necessary to breed to outside stallions to continue improving the quality of our horses. Some of these include Natural Bottom, CD Son of Magnolia & Jesses Topaz. Our main goal is to raise stout, good minded, cow horses that the cowboys working on our ranches & others can use for everyday ranch work to showing in the arena.

Johnny Miller (940) 733-4814
Our family has ranched in Wichita County for over 140 years. We have always used horses to get our work done. I’m an old school guy, so we still do our work horseback. We don’t have a trainer, and I can’t train a lion to eat meat, so we just trot ‘em. I am not cowboy enough to get anything done on a fresh horse. Horses carrying our brand have competed at the highest level. Ranch rodeos where some were picked as “top horse”. They have been to team ropings, calf ropings & barrels races. They have had money won on them at the B.F.I., multiple horses ridden at the National Finals Steer Roping, and the Timed Event Championship. Our philosophy on selling horses is simple. Cheap, good & fast; pick any two. If you want it cheap & fast, it won’t be any good. If you want it cheap and good, it won’t be fast. If you want it good and fast, it sure ain’t going to be cheap.

Tulia, Texas
Jim Cogdell or Blaze Cogdel (806) 681-0024 or (806) 346-8107
The Tule Ranch was purchased by D.M. Cogdell, Sr. in 1953 and is 100% owned and operated by the Cogdell family today. Members of the third and fourth generation are currently living and working on the ranch. The land that makes up the Tule Ranch is currently owned by Billy and Bette Cogdell’s children (Penny, Rank, Dick and Jim Cogdell), with each operating their own portion of the ranch. In addition, some members of the fourthgeneration lease parts of the ranch for their own operations. Even though there are several family units conducting business
within the Tule Ranch border, we have the unique blessing of helping each other, so much so, that there is very little need for any outside labor. Today the broodmare band reflects the Cogdell’s interest in the cutting arena, as well as in ranch horses, because to the Cogdell family they are one in the same. The primary goal of the Tule Ranch remuda program is to produce good quality, versatile ranch horses with the ability and breeding to also compete in the arena. This has cumulated in two NCHA Open Futurity wins (1978 & 1999) and being selected as an AQHA Best of The Remuda Award recipient (2006).

Wills Cattle Co. is a family-owned cow calf/ yearling operation established in 2008 by Becky and Calan Wills. The family leases approximately 12,000 acres and takes care of 15,000 more in Shackleford, Stevens, and Parker Counties. Wills Cattle Co. prides themselves on making good solid saddle horses that can do anything asked of them. They raise a few colts but buy most of them as yearlings and only sell one to two horses per year. By the time these horses are ready to sell they have seen most everything in the ranching world. In addition to everyday ranch work, they team rope and ranch rodeo on them.

Wilson Cattle is a family run operation where we have two ranches in the Texas panhandle. We run all of our own wheat pasture cattle and care for thousands of more cattle. Wilson Cattle is award winning and known for great horses. We take pride in our horses whether it is branding our calves in the spring or backing in the box in Las Vegas at the World Series Finale in December. Nonetheless, making great cow horses is something that we are fortunate enough to do on a daily basis!
