Luís Vaz de Camões (sometimes anglicized as Camoëns) (1525-1580) penned the founding tale of the Portuguese nation, taking as his figurehead the great explorer Vasco da Gama, the explorer who first sailed to India, thus opening up to the Portuguese a direct route to the riches of Asia that avoided the Ottoman Empire. Camões had an adventurous life himself and was posted first to India, then to Macau, where he wrote his epic in Homeric style, taking as his cues founding texts such as the Aeneid and the Iliad. The poet was famously–and apocryphally?–shipwrecked off the coast of Cambodia, but purported to swim ashore with the only copy of his manuscript held aloft… What is truly remarkable in the Lusiads for our context, is the number of references to Ethiopia, starting with a glowing reference to ‘thy son,’ which is of course a homage to Vasco da Gama’s own son, the ill-fated Christopher, who was to meet his end on a mountaintop near Lake Tana. ETHIOPIAN AWARDED FOR STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP Congratulations to Life & Peace Institute’s Hannah Tsadik for being awarded the Swedish Development Forum prize for her “strategic leadership” by the Swedish Development Forum, FUF, which recognised Hannah for having “developed an innovative and successful regional peace program in the Horn of Africa. “As a representative of the Life & Peace Institute, [Hannah] has participated in various roles in Addis Ababa between 2008 and 2017, facilitating a series of analysis and research initiatives, and initiated innovative ways towards peace and development…In a winning way, Hannah Tsadik has created working venues and contributed to cross-border cooperation, between civil society and political structures, researchers and practitioners, across national borders”.

The Life & Peace Institute is privileged to have had Hannah’s leadership, vision and creativity – alongside the Addis-based team – in the development of the Horn of Africa Program (HARP) and the Ethiopia program. In close collaboration with partners at the Peace & Development Committee in Addis Ababa, more than 77,000 young people in Ethiopia have participated in Sustained Dialogue peace projects under Hannah’s leadership. HARP has engaged policymakers at the African Union’s Peace and Security Council on issues ranging from peace promotion within humanitarianism and women in peacekeeping operations. The Life & Peace Institute’s HARP launched a major program this year to strengthen Community Cross-border Collaboration in the IGAD Region. It is the next step in more than four years of work led by Hannah and the Life & Peace Institute’s partners committed to garnering the points of view of stakeholders that are traditionally marginal to the regional policy processes such as local communities, academia, and civil society.

Muluken is co-founder and Managing partner of ZANA Landscape Design (and Contractor) PLC. ZANA is a pioneer in Landscape design; ZANA, has designed and built outdoor spaces for both private and public use. Muluken’s vision is to make the outdoor spaces of Ethiopian cities, green, clean, functional, inspiring and environmentally responsible. ZANA has designed and built one of the most inspiring and professionally designed Parks in Addis, ASER Park. Currently, ZANA is proposing different public spaces for community use and also working with private investors to create eco-friendly and functional green spaces in Addis Ababa and beyond.

ZANA educates clients on how to plant low maintenance (less water) plants, and locally available plants to create simplicity in landscaping and environmentally responsible landscaping work. Muluken has a background in youth mentoring and was an award recipient of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. His love of gardening began as a child when he was just ten.

THE GREENING OF ADDIS The greening of Addis and beyond is our passion and the root of our vision to start ZANA Landscaping. ZANA Landscape Design and Contractor Plc provides landscape design, landscape construction, and maintenance services.

Founded in February 2015 by two partners with expertise in horticulture and landscape architecture, we were motivated by a very clear problem in Ethiopia, especially in Addis Ababa: a lack of clean and well-designed outdoor spaces.

Since ZANA was established, we have served clients from diverse areas of the market, including public parks, real estate, residential, organizations, industrial (factories), and offices. We recently designed and built a beautiful public space in the heart of Addis, ASER Park, located on Bole Road .Our clients include: Gift Real Estate, the US Embassy, Awash Wine, Megabi Skate Park, Equip Ministries.

One of our unique strategies for landscaping is site adaptation.While people typically design and plant spaces without regard to context, we follow natural and smart principles to resemble the space and its microenvironment. For our consultancy and design work in Lalibela and Mekele, we proposed Xeriscaping, which allowed us to use plants that grow well in the area and tolerate the climate, instead of the common trend of selecting plants based on preference that struggle to grow, require high maintenance, and often die. Thus, our spaces are more beautiful, functional, and durable.

A landscaper is a re-creator of the natural environment. And thus landscaping gives us the opportunity and pleasure of re-creating and restoring our cities, houses, and outdoor spaces, which are increasingly losing the green and proper care they so deeply need. As a business, ZANA focuses on medium- to large-scale projects for the sake of impact and strategy. In addition, our excellent services are ideal for plantation work for hotels, offices, and embassies.

With the recognition of our expertise, ZANA has reviewed the design for Ambassador Park’s renovation project under the Addis Ababa City Beautification Office and also had meetings with the office of the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network about Addis Ababa’s resilient plan and building several parks in the capital. We organized and participated in different cleanup events, tree-planting, and awareness-creation and volunteerism opportunities to make Addis clean and green. We have also proposed an urban park project for the Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to transform one of the nearby forests around Addis into a well-designed and functional urban park for biking, jogging, picnics, and camping events.

One of our goals is to learn from and share the expertise of other countries’ landscaping knowledge through partnership with different international companies and institutions to help us approach the industry with world-class expertise. Thus, we have formed an partnerships with the University of Delaware’s Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Department (USA), Jansson and Sons Landscape Services (Netherlands), and 5 Star Pool and Spa (Montana, USA), who are assisting us with their expertise and advice.

We believe there is a great opportunity to make Addis green, clean, and livable if everyone cares to spend a little bit of attention and investment to make this happen. ZANA aims to be at the forefront of this movement for the flourishing of our city!

BEAUTIFY YOURSELF AT BELLINA SALON Arabella Stewart

Bellina Salon is a welcome new salon that opened its doors in a new building a few months ago; located across the street from the German School and right next door to the French Bakery/Café.

As well as traditional hair styling for both Ethiopian and European hair (the lead stylist trained and worked at Boston Spa) including colour (the salon uses Schwarzkopf products) the particular service that I indulge in is their incredible foot massage and pedicure – not like any foot massage that I have experienced! It is sheer indulgence and good for you too. First your feet are soaked in essential oils with herbs, baking soda and sea salt in a copper bowl (soaking feet in a copper container can help to achieve a healthy immune system as well as help alleviate joint pain from arthritis).

You are then given a relaxing and yet thorough massage (either seated or lying down in the adjoining treatment room) which includes the additional use of using wooden massage stick tools which have been used for hundreds of years in Thailand when giving foot and hand massages. The tools also use elements of reflexology, which benefit your overall wellbeing. One of the massage tools is small and pointed and the other has a roller. The pressure when using the pointed tool (none of this is in any way painful by the way) is therefore concentrated onto a small point of the foot and is more effective than using the fingers. The massage tools are used in different ways – by pushing the small tip into the muscles as described above, or by rolling along the foot. The rolling method is really effective on the sole of the foot, as it can be targeted along the ligaments from the pad below the toes right down to the heel. The massage is usually around 45 minutes.

Their pedicure is just as thorough; your feel are soaked as described above and in addition to the usual nail and cuticle trimming and maintenance, your feel enjoy an invigorating scrub (hardened skin on heels and under toes is gently scrubbed away using a callous file) and exfoliation process (home made treatment made from coffee granules, oats, sugar, rosemary and olive oil applied to your feet and legs).Your feet and legs are finally and generously applied with oil and you enjoy a relaxing moisturizing massage to complete the process.

The salon uses its adjoining treatment room for facials and is equipped with the necessary and professional equipment for performing a variety of indepth cleansing and anti ageing facials. The salon uses Origin products and if you don’t want an actual facial you can just have the facial massage.

Walk in appointments are welcome but if calling ahead for an appointment, speaking in Amharic is advisable.

TREKS THAT CHANGE LIVES! Mark Chapman

Tesfa Community Treks provide income to local villagers and open the eyes of the guests. An increasing number of discerning tourists are looking to the Tesfa Community Treks where villagers host the tourists and benefits flow directly to the local hosts. While the Simien Mountains and Bale Mountains have been drawing tourists for decades, keen to trek in these Afro Alpine mountains with their unique wildlife, the Tesfa treks also have wildlife and stunning views but at the same time tourists are giving a big something back, and experiencing the real Ethiopia of the highland farmers.

Since 2003 Tesfa treks have been hosting tourists in the mountains of North Wollo around Lalibela. Initially in Meket Woreda and more recently Gidan and Lasta woredas, local villages have built 11 guesthouses organised as cooperatives to host small groups of walkers along the basalt escarpments that surround Lalibela. Included in this network of guesthouses several can be found on Mount Abuna Yoseph, a protected area around the highest peak in Ethiopia outside of the Simien and Bale Mountains at 4,288m.

The higher reaches of Abuna Yoseph are home to a pack of Ethiopian wolves, as well as troops of gelada, leopards and many raptors. Since 2012 tourists have also been walking on the Tesfa treks in the Agame Mountains around Adigrat in E.Tigray. There is a network of 7 village guesthouses with stunning walks between and a number of magnificent rock hewn churches that are rarely visited by tourists (other than those staying in the guesthouses).

Again there are Geladas and amazing birds to see but as with the treks in Wollo, it is the host communities and the age-old farming life of the highlands that have the biggest impact on the visitors.The hospitality is humbling and simplicity of life prompts something to all of us coming from our cluttered and hectic lives. Now Tesfa is opening up new areas for community treks, with 3 simple village guesthouses to the south of the Simien National Park (Funded by African Wildlife Foundation) and 4 village guesthouses in North Shoa, in and around Wof Washa forest, just beyond Ankober.

As with the village guesthouses in Wollo and Tigray, each guesthouse is owned and run by a community from the local village organised into a cooperative. In each case 55% of the payment (around $34USD) goes to pay the village community and lunch (mostly provided by the village or another nearby provider) 25% goes towards local guides and coordinators, and only 20% (+VAT) is kept by Tesfa Tours which provides the marketing and booking service. Each community provides not just accommodation, but food, hot drinks, and a pack animal. The cost per night also includes a guide, so all that remains is transport in and out and bottled drinks (sold by the community) – beers, water, soft drinks and maybe some wine or gin and tonic! Facilities include beds, with sheets and blankets, a simple sit down toilet, a dining room, and great views!

HOHE Awards ceremony The HOHE Award celebrates the best of Ethiopian literature and highlights just some of the many good books with broad appeal published in Ethiopia during the past year. The recent awards ceremony held at the National Theater in August was a great success; Best Book of the Year was awarded to the following authors in all three categories!

1/ Clay Pot Restaurant is a mainstay in Addis - how long have you been in the Restaurant business?

I first started working in the restaurant business while in high school and university and have been in the business for about 15 years.

2/ When did you first become interested in cooking and what or who inspired you?

I’ve always enjoyed cooking, especially being the grand daughter and daughter of incredibly amazing cooks.When I moved back to Ethiopia, I was unable to find employment in my field; that of Teacher Trainer. It was by happenstance that my love of cooking came to the forefront when a friend and fellow teacher Azeb Mulatu and I opened Tacana restaurant in Addis. Since 2013 I have been cooking in Clay Pot, a restaurant I own with my friend Jappi Yilma.

3/ What prompted you to return to your homeland after many years away?

Many reasons; family, to get to know Ethiopia substantively, but primarily it was my need to ensure that my daughter Candace grew up here.

4/ Tell us about your new organic pet food line?

Across the globe, we have to learn to cope with our environmentally compromised and increasingly hectic life. The value of whole and mostly plant-based foods are imperative for our health and vitality, as well as for our pets. Like many Ethiopians, I have had dogs and cats and the daily grind of having house staff or myself boil meat can frankly be distressing with respect to the smell and sometimes, unknown quality of the meat. I therefore decided to find a way to make it easier for people to feed their pets whole foods of a clear healthy and consistent

quality. I created T.M.D’s Pet Eats where we use the freshest meat and vegetables along with eggshells to make food satisfactory even to the fussiest eater. With no artificial ingredients, no soy, corn, preservatives or by-products, the pet owner can be assured my hand packed food is also an immense improvement to heavily preserved canned dog and cat food. While I co-own Clay Pot, T.M.D’s Pet Eats is my sole business and my kitchen is conveniently located on the 6th floor.

5/ What makes it unique?

Just imagine coming home to a house or apartment and being able to feed your pets without worry and even having your kids participate.

The convenience of thawing T.M.D’s Pet Eats in the fridge or microwave and serving it warm or cold is clearly evident. One can use it as a pet’s sole diet, as part of a rotation, or as a mixer to a less premium product. I appreciate the difficulty of finding wet or dry dog and cat food in Addis Ababa. This concern is compounded during Wednesday and Friday fasting days and during the numerous fasting days and months.The benefit of T.M.D’s Pet Eats is that the pet owner can actually see the quality ingredients in their original form; whole, pure meat and fresh vegetables without any additives or by products.

I also make pet chew toys to help our furry friends with their dental health 6/ What is your future plan for your new pet food line?

Certainly I will expand T.M.D’s Pet Eats business and continue my research into more whole food varieties that are freshly sourced locally, including treats, to serve a diverse clientele. Additionally, I see T.M.D’s Pet Eats expanding pet products to meet all their needs such as pet shampoos etc.

Crisp Smashed Potatoes With Fried Onions and Parsley

Some of you may be thinking, “Does the world need another crisp smashed potato recipe?” At least some of you are saying, “Yes, we do!” So here you go. Regular olive oil works if you don't have chicken fat around, but this recipe is so good, it's worth roasting a chicken. A few tips: Don’t over-steam the potatoes or they will fall apart, but don’t under-steam or you’ll never be able to crush them. Also, let the potatoes cool a bit before you smash them so they dry out a bit; this, too, helps them stay intact. Finally, the chicken fat (or oil) must be very hot. If it is not hot enough, it will soak into the potato rather than crisp it.These are the best. And the crispiest.

Dates are a basic ingredient in the cuisines of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. They are the sweet fruit of the palm of the dates and one of the oldest cultivated fruits of the world. Evidence shows that they have been cultivated since 6000 BC. The dates are oval and cylindrical in shape and have a bright red to bright yellow color when ripe. Each date contains a single seed. There are about 400 varieties of dates available on the market.

You can include dates in different ways in your diet. You can eat them as snacks or sprinkle the chopped dates on sweet dishes, cakes and desserts. Along with being tasty and delicious, they are rich in various nutrients that provide immense health benefits. Dates are high in iron content. They are also a good source of potassium, protein, dietary fiber, calcium, B vitamins as well as vitamins A and C. Other minerals are copper, magnesium, manganese, selenium and zinc.They also possess anti-infectious, antiinflammatory and anti-hemorrhagic properties.

NOTE: Diabetics should avoid consuming dates.

The sugar content of mature dates is about 80 percent and the quality of the dates depends on the content of glucose, fructose and sucrose.

The hotel is currently in the ongoing process of being renovated and updated with possible expansion and although it may not yet have caught up with and acquired the latest updated and modern furnishings of its recent and plentiful “cousins” there is a unique and timeless appeal of this old world hotel and it truly is a historic landmark.

As one of only two major 4-star hotels in its time (alongside the Hilton) the Wabe Shebelle was the tallest building in the city with 11 floors and it was THE place to visit along with all the international dignitaries and celebrities of the time – if walls could speak, what interesting tales and fascinating observations there would be to hear….

As a child growing up in Addis, I recall the feeling of great excitement when the first skyscraper building of 11 floors in Addis opened its doors in 1968 and specifically the fact that it had a lift that would whisk you to the top for panoramic 360-degree views of Addis Ababa and the surrounding mountains – stunning vistas at any time of day. Of course the landscape has changed vastly over the years but the hotel and that rooftop terrace continue to hold great sentimental appeal and still offers fantastic views of an ever-changing urban landscape. The mountain ranges are still as beautiful as ever albeit more populated than they were in 1968.

The Wabe Shebelle Hotel opened its doors in 1968. Emperor Haile Selassie had it built specifically as a gift for his five grandsons, the sons of Prince Mekonnen who died tragically in a car accident in 1957.The Hotel was then nationalized during the Derg regime in 1975. The hotel remained under the management of the Privatization and Public Enterprises Supervising Agency (PPESA) until it was eventually returned to the Royal Family. In 1999 Prince Beede Mariam, one of the five grandsons, began the process to reclaim the hotel. The entire process ending up taking 11 years. “We are very delighted,” Beede Mariam announced when the Hotel was finally returned to its original owners in 2010. Today Prince Beede runs the hotel on behalf of his brothers and his nephew Joel Makonnen is the Board Director.

The “Segnet” restaurant on the 10th floor adjacent to the outdoor terrace is an ideal place to visit either for a drink – anything from fresh juice to beer or coffee. At dusk the view of the sunsets from different terrace vantage points is marvelous and gives you a real feel for the city and its surroundings. There is no view or terrace to match it in the city in my opinion. The restaurant also serves a good selection of wellWO|35

Ethiopian-Danish consortium to grow a sustainable dairy sector A Danish-Ethiopian project is on the way to making better use of the milk from Ethiopia’s 11 million dairy cows and to improve the nutrition of low-income families in the country. If all goes according to plan, a healthy, fortified, and locally produced yoghurt will be on the market by 2019 – at a price that most families can afford.

The three-year project is driven by the GAIN Nordic Partnership, with Arla Foods Ingredients as lead business partner. The project is financially supported by Denmark’s development cooperation agency, DANIDA, while the Confederation of Danish Industry, which represents 10,000 Danish businesses, is helping to develop the business model.

By drawing on their collective strengths, the partner’s goal is to reach low income consumers in Ethiopia, who often live on diets that lack the essential vitamins and nutrients needed to grow properly, live healthy lives, and raise a healthy family.The main target groups for the project are children under seven years old and mothers, who are more vulnerable to malnutrition, particularly during pregnancy and lactation.

Following several field trips to Ethiopia, the GAIN Nordic partners have begun to cooperate with two local dairy companies, which will produce the yoghurt for sale in Ethiopian markets and kiosks.

DanChurchAid is working with the smallholder farmers, who supply the dairies with milk, to improve their milk quality and the yield from each cow.

This supply chain approach is closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG8 to promote sustainable economic growth and decent work, and SDG2 to improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

“Initiatives that create value for all partners are the way forward for ensuring long-term improvements to health and living standards in a developing country,” says Charlotte Sørensen, Senior Project Manager at Arla Foods Ingredients.Arla Foods Ingredients is currently developing the yoghurt recipe for production in Ethiopia and a few pilot tests with the initial yoghurt recipe have produced promising results.The company is using its whey permeate, an ingredient rich in milk minerals and lactose, to maximise the dairies’ yoghurt production and ensure a good taste and texture. The yoghurt will be further fortified with a mix of vitamins and minerals, which are lacking in the current diets of these consumers.

Following that, the task is to transfer Arla Foods Ingredients’ knowledge to the two dairy companies in Ethiopia, upgrading their existing processing methods.The dairy representatives will then complete their formal training in 2018 at the Arla Foods Ingredients application centre in Denmark. Once the training session is completed, the dairy companies will be ready to run commercial-scale trials.

“That’s when we make sure the yoghurt can be produced safely and always with the same good quality,” Charlotte Sørensen says.

In the meantime, GAIN will lead the effort to raise public awareness of the importance of good nutrition and the role of milk-based products.

This will include encouraging vulnerable consumers – such as children and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers who are exempt from Ethiopia’s frequent fasting tradition – to include more dairy nutrition in their diets.

Charlotte Pedersen, GAIN’s Senior Advisor, explains: “Mothers and children have the biggest need for good nutrition. If they consume more dairy products, the demand for dairy becomes more stable, making it easier for the dairy processors to expand their production, as well as for smallholder dairy farmers to secure market access”.

Significant progress has been made since the GAIN Nordic partners made their first trip to Ethiopia in 2014. The launch of this three-year Danida-supported project in September this year is, in itself, the result of a strong collaborative effort.

ADOPTED ETHIOPIAN GIRL WINS MISS MICHIGAN TEEN USA Anane Loveday, 16, who was adopted from Ethiopia at age 8, had hoped her first pageant competition would lead to college scholarship money, never expecting to win a state title.The Grosse Ile student was crowned Miss Michigan Teen USA Sept. on 30 at the pageant, which was held in Port Huron, the first pageant she ever entered.

She said she entered hoping the pageant would help her win scholarship money for her college education, which she hopes leads to medical school. She said she has also looked into modeling as a way to earn money for college.Anane (pronounced “uh-NO-naye”) and her younger sister Zoe, 11, were adopted eight years ago by Jack Loveday, 63, and his wife Deborah, 61, when the empty-nesters were moved by a missionary’s images of African children awaiting adoption.

The couple have three biological offspring: Lisa, 44, John, 35, and Kelly, 39, plus six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Deborah Loveday said their priest had started an orphanage in Tanzania, for which the youth of their parish collected supplies. People who went to the orphanage on a mission trip returned with video that they turned into a documentary, and the images of the children impacted her emotionally, which sparked in them a desire to adopt an overseas child in need.They adopted Anane and Zoe in December 2009 from Ethiopia.

“We really wanted our kids to know that they are the ones we chose,” she said. “It wasn’t just an accident – we wanted them.”

Anane Loveday said she has despised snow since she arrived in the U.S. and exited an airplane in Washington D.C. amid a blizzard.“I do remember all I wanted to do was go back into the plane,” she said. “It was so cold!”

Jack Loveday said they took a small commuter plane from New York City to D.C. prior to the last leg of their return to Detroit.

“One of the worst blizzards they had in decades,” he said. “You had to get off the plane onto the tarmac. The snow was so bad it was flying sideways.” As an 8-year-old, Anane Loveday learned to speak English very quickly, and is now in her junior year in high school with her same age peers.

“I am a little more mature than most of the kids in my school, because I experienced a lot of things back in Ethiopia,” she said. She said therapy WO|37

and a strong relationship with her adoptive parents have helped her work through the trauma she experienced as a child.

Anane Loveday said she wants to become a medical doctor because she likes helping others. “If I can make good money and help others at the same time, I think that would be a good thing,” she said.

Deborah Loveday said Anane would like to go back to Ethiopia as a visiting physician – not permanently, but to visit and help out where she was most needed. Anane Loveday enjoys traditional Ethiopian dance and music, and has taught her parents how to prepare some of the foods, warning them which spices not to get on their hands, which in turn could get into their eyes, a painful consequence to avoid “The Ethiopian food I could eat every day,” she said. “Being here, though, I have gotten into shopping, which has made me Americanized. I do love to shop – but I am a good shopper – I don’t like to spend a lot of money on clothes.”

She likes to run, and her favorite class in school is English, because she likes to write.

Her sister Zoe, 11, was 3 ½ when she was adopted, and she said she doesn’t have memories like Anane has.“I think my knowing about the Ethiopian culture is important, because it is where I started to grow up, and it is where I was born, but where my real home is, is in America,” Zoe said. Deborah Loveday said both girls have been exposed to Ethiopian culture through groups with immigrants from Ethiopia and through knowing other Ethiopian adoptees.“Anane knows enough about cooking that we were able to learn how to make the Ethiopian dishes,” Deborah Loveday said.

Deborah Loveday said the food is very spicy, with berbere in it, an Ethiopian spice mixture that includes chili peppers, garlic, ginger, basil, korarima, rue, ajwain or radhuni, nigella and fenugreek, and is a key ingredient in Ethiopian cuisine.

Anane said someday she hopes to go back to Ethiopia for a visit, perhaps as a doctor, to help others in her native country. She said she would not want to live in Ethiopia, though.

“I am here, and this is where I belong,” she said. “It is my home and I was born there, but here is my official home.”

Both:Thank you for having us

RB: Your website has been getting a lot of attention from students here in Addis. What motivated you to start this platform?

C M: Having been international students, we had already gone through the gruelling process of applying and enrolling in a U.S institution.We understood that proper guidance and help with everything from college choices and college applications, to aptitude tests and visa interviews made a huge difference between success and failure.

SN: Going through that process we knew that many others would be going through the same . We decided to build www.internationalstudentcenter.us to help out students like us reach their education goals.

CM: There are so many brilliant students that want to further their education abroad but either don’t know how to achieve their goal or fail because they did not apply the right way .

SN: That is our inspiration. We strive to help students just like us achieve their dreams in the smoothest way possible. Both the student and their parents can relax knowing their application, will be done the right way giving them the best possible chance of getting accepted into their desired U.S institution.

RB: That is amazing to hear that your motivation is helping others. So how does it all work? Walk me through your process.

CM: Well the process is fairly simple. Students or parents go to our website www.internationalstudentcenter.us and sign up. After they verify their account, they log back in to complete their basic profile.

SN:The basic profile includes simple information such as a brief introduction about themselves and their academic transcript.This helps us to understand each student goals and come up with an individualized plan to ensure successful enrollment .

RB: So students apply to get into your program?

CM:Yes, we evaluate each student based on their major of interest and their grades. All of the students who have gone through our program since 2014 are enrolled in college right now and we try to ensure that we can help a student before we admit them into our program.

SN: What I failed to realize while I was in high school was that grades are relative.We can work with so many students and majority of whom are not straight A students. We have partnerships with several colleges that have a wide array of enrollment criteria which means that we’ll make sure that you get accepted.

RB : What happens after a student is accepted into your program?

SN: Once you join our program, you are immediately welcomed into our very own international student network. You gain access to fellow international students and previous graduates who act as mentors and guides WO|39

RB: Do you have local representatives in Addis?

SN: Yes. Meron Tsegaye, our Head of Operations, and her dedicated team coordinate our activities in Addis. Meron is also a former international student and she is on ground helping students with routine tasks such as: acquiring their recommendation letters and transcripts and reviewing their essays. Her team meets students and their parents in person to tackle whatever obstacle they are facing.

RB: A lot of students worry about how to afford a U.S education. Do you help students with that?

CM: Definitely! We have a huge library of scholarship resources that is regularly updated and we match all our members to these opportunities.

Academic grants and diversity scholarships are some of the ways that we help our students to reduce the cost of their U.S education.

RB: Looking at your website and student parent testimonials looks like you have been very successful in guiding your students through their desired colleges. What would you say makes you so successful.

SB: Firstly,I wish that the International Student Center existed when I was applying to college. Some of the questions covered in our free FAQ section would have saved me countless hours and heartache. Addis Family Getaway is a division of Welcome Ethiopia Tours, a fully licensed tour operator in Addis Ababa under Swiss management. Addis Family Getaway was founded to offer nature weekend getaways for families and friends. The idea behind it is the lack of green areas and playgrounds for children in the rapidly growing capital. Addis Family Getaway offers camping weekends in beautiful spots within easy reach of Addis Ababa offering unlimited natural playgrounds for children and adults alike. For the shorter 1-night weekends, we usually go to Menagesha Forest, the closest tract of significant indigenous forest to Addis Ababa, 20km west of the capital. The forest can be explored along a network of hiking and 4×4 trails (ranging from a few hundred metres to almost 10km in length) that fan out from the forestry headquarters 15km from the small town of Sebeta. Wildlife includes the striking guereza monkey (Colobus monkey), endemic Menelik’s bushbuck and bold Anubis baboon, all frequently seen by hikers, and predators include the leopard and serval cat. Menagesha is also a particularly important site for endemic forest birds such as the yellow-fronted parrot, Abyssinian woodpecker and Abyssinian catbird, as well as the colourful Narina trogon and white-cheeked turaco, which are also likely to be seen.

Hyena People of Ethiopia In the final episode of “Tribes, Predators and Me� (BBC Two Television) renowned Scottish wildlife cameraman, Gordon Buchanan, journeys across Ethiopia to reveal the curious and complex relationship its people have with hyenas.

Hyenas are loathed and feared by many people. Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan journeys across Ethiopia to find out how the people here can live so close to these powerful carnivores. Ethiopia has more hyenas than anywhere else in the world, and Gordon wants to find out why.

He starts his journey in the capital, Addis Ababa. Even here on the outskirts of this massive city, spotted hyenas prowl looking for food.

Local hyena expert Girum Henok takes Gordon on foot to see hyenas at night in a small patch of forest. Weighing up to 90 kilos and capable of killing lions in packs, hyenas are one of Africa's most impressive carnivores. Girum tells Gordon that hyenas are tolerated here because people believe hyenas ward off the devil.

Gordon travels to the remote Omo Valley to meet a cattle-herding people called the Bodi. He meets Baradi, a spiritual leader, and Bibani, a young mother. They will be his Bodi mentors in hyena country. They are hyena experts, disliking them because their cattle are preyed upon by hyenas on a regular basis. Baradi takes Gordon on foot to a hyena den. It seems the Bodi often destroy hyena dens, but mostly in retaliation for attacks on livestock.

In the Omo Valley, wildlife has largely been replaced by cattle so hyenas have little choice but to raid livestock. Bibani asks Gordon to sleep outside overnight to ward off hyenas.The next morning, Gordon learns he slept as hyenas entered the Bodi's village. Bibani is worried and Gordon helps her fix her thorn fence. Bibani names Gordon Onyabassa, after a bullock he must now protect. He decorates it with dung and ash.

Gordon learns from elders that there was a time before the Bodi became animal herders when hyenas and the Bodi lived in peace. He also learns that contrary to popular belief, hyenas hunt more than they scavenge.The Bodi rely completely on their cattle to survive, but those cattle are a tempting target for hyenas. Gordon visits a neighbouring WO|45

Bodi village that has had a cow injured by a hyena. Baradi shows Gordon the AK47 trap they set to kill marauding hyenas.

Baradi also shows Gordon another reason they rely on cattle. The Bodi are famous for their Ka'el ritual. During the rainy season the Bodi drink blood from the necks of their cows. This doesn't harm the cows, so it is more sustainable than slaughtering them for meat, but allows Bodi men to fatten up so that they become attractive as potential husbands. The fattest men and the best dancers are the most eligible!

Gordon leaves his Bodi friends in Omo Valley. He has learnt that the Bodi see hyenas as a cunning and respected enemy. He arrives in Harar, a medieval city with a reputation for having hundreds of hyenas. Gordon visits the local gravedigger for advice and then goes on foot at night with a thermal camera looking for hyenas in the spooky graveyard. He finds a pack of hyenas feasting and retreats, but they don't seem to be robbing graves.

The next day Gordon meets local hyena expert Yusef Saleh, who is rehabilitating an orphaned hyena. That night Gordon visits Yusef's son Abbas, who feeds wild hyenas near the city walls to show tourists.

Gordon sits beside Abbas surrounded by hyenas, illustrating how big they are. These predators don't attack people, but instead look submissive.

The next day Gordon takes a few old bones to meet the 'graveyard hyenas', which again show him their gentler side. He sees a young hyena cub, which could explain why the hyenas are in the graveyard - they must have a den here. Gordon invites Baradi and his daughter Choma to meet Harar's hyenas. Unlike the people of Harar, these Bodi cattle-herders don't like hyenas, but they seem to soften towards them once they get close. If their cattle were protected, perhaps even the Bodi could forge a more peaceful relationship with hyenas.

During his visit to Ethiopia, Gordon has seen a variety of beliefs and attitudes towards hyenas. From tolerance to grudging respect and even encouragement, the people of this spectacular country have a lesson for the world - a lesson about not judging a predator based on its appearance.

Excess Body Fat

"My excess fat scares me — it's a ticking time bomb to my body." ~Carrie Latet, 2006 While scales don’t lie, they don’t tell the whole truth either. Scales don’t tell you if you have gained muscle, if you are holding water, and most importantly they don’t tell you about the fat.

The most important part of starting any nutrition and exercise plan is to look at your overall body composition.Your body composition tells you how much of your body is made up of fat and how much of it is muscle.This gives a much better picture of your overall health, and might tell you that you’re in better shape than you think!

For example, a poor diet and lack of calories can lead to weight loss.

However, losing muscle and water will also contribute to this. A healthy and nutritious diet combined with an exercise plan will ensure that you are losing fat, rather than shrinking your muscle. Overall you will be fitter, healthier and feel much better.

ESSENTIAL FAT VS. STORAGE FAT First off, there’s essential body fat. It plays a significant role in overall health and it is essential for survival. Present in organs, bone marrow, nerve cells, and the brain, essential body fat helps: Have sufficient energy reserves by acting as a metabolic fuel: Conserve body heat by acting as an insulator, Protect your internal organs and joints by acting as soft, fluffy cushion etc. NONESSENTIAL or STORAGE FAT is fat that accumulates as energy reserves.

STORAGE FAT itself can be further divided into two: subcutaneous and visceral. Although they’re both components of storage fat, they’re quite different from each other. They are literally different and function independently from each other.

Deposited underneath the skin, subcutaneous fat is fat that you can see, touch, and pinch. Because it’s visible and impacts body shape, this is the type of fat that typically motivates people to improve their body composition.

The second, more dangerous type of body fat is visceral fat. It is invisible to the eye and comfortably sits between the abdominal organs.

Visceral fat is recognized as a worse health threat than subcutaneous fat. In fact, it’s considered a strong , independent predictor of all-cause morbidity and mortality.

And then there’s metabolic obesity. It happens when individuals have too much visceral fat (regardless of whether a person is lean or obese), increasing their risk for developing conditions like cardiovascular disease .

Ethiopian Tsgabu Grmay joins US cycling team, Trek The 26 year old, who joins from Bahrain-Merida, is the current Ethiopian Time Trial champion and has ridden five Grand Tours including the last two Tours de France.

Grmay, the reigning time trial champion in Ethiopia, got his start with MTN-Qhubeka in 2012 and spent three seasons with the team before jumping to the WorldTour with Lampre-Merida.After two years there, he joined Bahrain-Merida for 2017. A three-time time trial champion and two-time road race champion in Ethiopia, he finished fifth overall at February's Tour of Oman.

Grmay said “I’m very happy about this move. Trek- Segafredo really stood out for me because they offer very professional guidance for their athletes. I am confident that within this team I can continue my development as a rider in the best circumstances.”

“I really like stage races because they suit me better than one-day races. Of course, it would be a dream come true if one day I could win a stage there. But let’s take it step by step. I want to keep learning and improving and will give it my all, and who knows, maybe one day, achieve that ultimate goal. In the meantime, I will honour my jersey, my team and my country. INDIANA SPUR – ETHIOPIA’S FIRST FRANCHISE RESTAURANT Arabella Stewart

Indiana Spur is the first of its kind restaurant in Ethiopia; the first franchise for the country and one of the most sophisticated restaurants I have yet to encounter here in Ethiopia. Perfect for relaxed family dining, it is equally ideal for the professional lunchtime crowd, high school friends gathering or intimate table for two! You might indeed wonder if you have been transported to the USA with its American diner style appearance and comfortable seating in a spacious setting, open plan kitchen and attached kiddies play area. The menu booklet is as colourful as it is plentiful with food to suit everyone and very generous helpings. The chain specialties are steak and ribs but vegetarians or non red meat eaters will still have a variety of options.

My companion could not resist the “Warrior Combo” meat platter and went for a plate of ribs (the best ever he commented), steak, beef sausage and a quarter chicken and he was not disappointed. The meat was tender and succulent. I went for the chicken enchilada platter with accompaniments, which was equally tasty. For desert we enjoyed the house specialty Malva pudding – a light sponge cake with a creamy caramel sauce and apple pie a la mode, which were both delicious.

Cucina Trading plc has taken on the franchise for Ethiopia and hopes that the Abyssinia Mall Spur is the first of several restaurants to open up over time all across the city.

Not many restaurants invite you to see their kitchen and bathrooms but GM Mulugeta Demissie and Deputy GM Mekdelawit Kebede were very keen for me to not just taste their food but to see everything behind the scenes. The open plan kitchen has an excellent exhaust system so while you can enjoy seeing food being prepared you do not have to smell it! I like their approach to staff as well; there is a chance to excel at what you do and be promoted up the ladder thereby offering real incentives for junior staff members to achieve success.

Readers might not be aware that Ethiopia rears more cattle than any other country in Africa and all the meat from Indiana Spur is sourced from a specific breeder in the country ensuring that the whole production process meets quality standards thus ensuring that the meat you eat is the finest quality available. They have every reason to be proud of this new franchise – well managed on all levels in addition to delicious food and a pleasant dining ambiance and environment.
