Torre Abbey

Welcoming visitors for over 800 years Torre Abbey Torre Abbey is Torbay’s most historic building, a multi-award-winning visitor attraction, set within 18 acres of stunning gardens and parkland. • • • • • • •

More than 600 incredible works of art, from the 18th century to the present day State-of-the-art technology, telling the Abbey’s fascinating story An exciting programme of specially curated seasonal exhibitions Family-friendly trails and fun children’s activities A secret walled garden, home to the Agatha Christie Potent Plants display A packed programme of events and activities throughout the year Onsite café and gift shop

History Founded in 1196, Torre Abbey became the wealthiest English monastery of the order of Premonstratensian canons. The extent of its survival makes Torre Abbey the best-preserved medieval abbey in Devon and Cornwall. After King Henry VIII closed the monastery in 1539, two of its former ranges of buildings were adapted for use as a private house. From 1662, this house became the home of the Cary family, who lived here for nearly 300 years. Art and Culture Today the abbey provides an ideal setting for Torbay’s collection of paintings and antiques, most of which have been donated by local people. Several times a year, Torre Abbey welcomes visiting art exhibitions from partners including the V&A, the Tate and the Arts Council Collection.

Family Friendly Activities We recognise that children are the museum visitors of tomorrow, so we want them to have the best experience possible. Free activity sheets are available from the main desk, while we also organise regular treasure hunts and other workshops and activities to complement our visiting exhibitions. The Gardens Our award-winning garden is famed for exuberant plantings of herbaceous perennials, roses and dahlias. Rare shrubs and trees flourish in the English Riviera climate, and our palm and cactus house contain tropical and subtropical plans. Crime fiction fans will also enjoy the Agatha Christie Potent Plants Garden that celebrates Torquay’s most famous former resident. Open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am until 5pm (last entry 3.45pm) and on Bank Holiday Mondays. Torre Abbey Café open 7 days a week. Visit: www.torre-abbey.org.uk

Soul Music For Troubled Times An with acclaimed singer

SARAH BROWN You may not know Sarah Brown’s name but you’ll definitely have heard her voice.

I was lucky to be able to catch up with Sarah to find out a bit more about her new album & plans for the future.

From her collaborations with legendary artists such as Simple Minds, George Michael, Stevie Wonder, Duran Duran, Simply Red, Roxy Music & Pink Floyd. Sarah Brown is one of the most prolific and in-demand vocalists in the world.

Jamie: Sarah, what was the inspiration on releasing ‘I’m On My Way’ as the first single and why?

Sarah Browns’ debut album ‘Sarah Brown Sings Mahalia Jackson’ was released on 20th May 2022. The album sees Sarah offer her interpretations of some of the classic tracks of arguably the most famous gospel singer of the last century who gave Brown hope and sanctuary through hard times faced over the years. Having recently appeared on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour performing her debut single ‘I’m On My Way’, she is currently on tour with Simple Minds with whom she has been playing with for the last 15 years. Jim Kerr from Simple Minds comments: “In a sane world Sarah’s colossal talent would ensure that she would be front of stage every night, so I would be in the front row. Every night. I am her biggest fan after all”

Sarah: Coming out of the pandemic of the last two years, I felt the message of this song was appropriate. Its about being determined to reach your goal. Placing one foot in front of the other until you get to where you want to be. Never giving up! Jamie: Having had a very decorative career in the music industry as one of the most highly sort after singers in the world, you have worked with many exceptional bands. Is there any particular singer or band you have drawn the most inspiration from? Sarah: Yes, I would say Incognito and Simple Minds. They both have shown great determination and grit. It really doesn’t matter the size of their audience, 20 people or 90,0000 people, the performance is always powerful and full of energy. Jamie: Why did you feel that now is

the time to release your your debut solo album? Sarah: The pandemic made me realise that I would be most miserable if I couldn’t sing. For years I wanted to do something but I was crippled by fear. I figure if I don’t do it now I will never do it and I just would not be able to face myself. Facing my fear has helped me to move forward. Jamie: How difficult was it to choose the musicians to play on the album and what was the style you were trying to achieve? Sarah: It took me years to approach Colin Good (the piano player) because I was afraid he would say no. When I finally dug up the confidence to ask him he was delighted and pretty much understood what I wanted straight away. Colin, who is a fan of Ma Rainy and Bessy Smith suggested I ask Tom Wheatley (the bass player) who also said yes straight away. I then thought Jerome Brown (on drums) and Luke Smith (on organ) would be perfect because they both come from totally different backgrounds to CD and TW which makes for great musical tension. The style I was trying to achieve was influenced by early Jazz, blues and the spirituals. I was only going to achieve this with the very best Musicians and that’s what I’ve got on this Album, all four musicians have worked with Giants in the music industry and you can hear their skill throughout the album. I am happy with the sound/style of the Album. It was always going to be an experiment,

The style I was trying to achieve was influenced by early Jazz, blues and the spirituals. but I had no idea that it was going to sound as good and as authentic as it does sound. ‘Didn’t it Rain’ has a jazz feel. ‘Knowbody Knows’ has a spiritual feel then it goes into a swing jazz feel. ‘Walk over Gods Heaven’ has a hint of Rock & Roll with a bit of early swing. Totally AMAZING, SUCH FUN!!!! Jamie: Do you plan to tour the album and if so what kind of venues would you like to play? Sarah: I would love to tour the album. I know it will bring much joy to the audiences, (that was always my intention.) The type of venues that will

did not hold back with her vocals. Inevitably she moved me deep within. I learnt to sing from an honest place. As a result of this, I am often told that I move people deep within. I don’t know any other way of singing. Sarah is a wonderfully charismatic beautiful human being. She has bought colour, light and exceptional sound to so many others. Now it is time for her to shine.

best suit this body of work are venues like ‘Below Stone Nest’ in Shaftesbury Avenue London. St Pancras Old Church. Oran Mor Glasgow. These venues are acoustically brilliant for the piano which features heavily and the upright Bass together with the organ and Drums. As a result of this, more and more jazz bands are using these spaces. Jamie: Mahalia Jackson has been a great influence can you tell us why? Sarah: Mahalia Jackson has inspired me from a young girl because she

Paignton Harbour One of the true gems in the crown of the English Riviera Paignton Harbour nestles on the western shores of Torbay situated midway between Torquay and Brixham harbours. Its’ understated beauty and authentic ‘fishing haven’ feel are often overlooked by visitors to the area and even some locals. The harbour was established in the 18th Century and the local Council has managed the harbour since 1935. Paignton was a thriving fishing harbour for many years and some of the old traditions of seamanship are kept alive and passed on through generations of Paigntonians. Today the harbour remains a hive of activity, especially during the summer months and a vast range of different users enjoy the benefits of this unassuming maritime gem. With many fantastic places to eat, drink and socialise and now a lovely craft market running through the Summer months Paignton Harbour really is the place to be. Over the next few pages we are focusing on Paignton Harbour so that you can see the fantastic things it has to offer. For more information please visit www.whatsonsouthwest.com.

Ann Reiter Art Jeiann Reiter also known as Ann Reiter, is a bright, up and coming self-taught German-Filipino abstract artist. Born in Cagayan De Oro City, Philippines on the 8th of March in the year of 1997, she now resides in Devon, England. She has amassed an impressive international following of admirers on social media where she finds inspiration and support. Her medium however, is far removed from the digital world of manipulated images. She paints bold, active brush strokes, strategic uses of palette knives, sponges, and all kinds of art materials on small to large canvases. Her art is dynamic and raw. After discovering how the mere change of a few brush strokes could dramatically alter the emotions conveyed by watercolour and oil art mediums, she found her freedom in acrylic and abstraction. She has evolved to create a less representational visual language. Anonymous, sometimes obscured, express her personal reality filtered through feeling. In her recent paintings she has made a more or less complete retreat from representation. Reflecting her energy and state of mind when painting, colour will take precedence over shape, departing from the distraction of realism.

Although my personality is revealed through my art, I do not wish to force an interpretation upon my audience. Another thing I’d like to add is that many of us don’t like the feeling of buying something that’s mass-produced, so by doing my own original art and only offering in limited edition, I can bring you unique and out of the ordinary wall art that stands out from the mass productions while maintaining the feeling of exclusivity.

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S

THE UNEXPECTED GUEST Lost in the fog a man stumbles through the open French windows of a remote house. He finds a woman standing with a gun in her hand near the body of her dead husband. The husband was a detestable man, a bully and a control freak. Thinking Laura the wife has done the murder the stranger agrees to help her. The police are puzzled by a set of unidentifiable finger prints and the plot thickens when it turns out that a man called MacGregor had a grudge against the dead man as he had killed MacGregor’s son whilst driving under the influence of alcohol. There are so many twists and turns of plot as more suspects emerge and more people cannot really account for themselves on that fateful night. But Miss Christie surprises us all as always with a final twist.

Regional Beach Guide 2022 Here is a guide to some of the nicest beaches in and around the Southwest and The English Riviera. At What’s On not only is your enjoyment our goal but also to be safe with everything we have to offer Remember to always keep your children in sight and make sure they wear a life jacket - please see some more safety tips below. ANSTEY’S COVE Anstey’s Cove sits between Torquay and Babbacombe. This quiet, peaceful and incredibly beautiful, small shingle beach nestles between high cliffs and a thickly wooded hillside. This is great place to come if you want to escape the crowds.

BABBACOMBE BEACH Babbacombe is a delightful small shingle beach set beneath the cliffs at Babbacombe Downs. An interesting place to explore with rock pools, cliffs and walks.

BANTHAM BEACH Looking out onto the shallow Bigbury Bay and the iconic Burgh Island, this popular family and surfing beach is deep in the South Hams with easy access to a number of walks towards Thurlestone or South Milton Sands. When the tide is out the beach is enormous and the pooch will be more than happy to roam around the area for hours while you soak up the seemingly never-ending panoramic views. BEER BEACH At the end of the picturesque fishing village of the same name is this pebbled beach surrounded by beautiful boats and limestone cliffs. As the cliffs give you natural protection from the wind, you can be sure of a microclimate warmer than many of the other exposed beaches in the county. BLACKPOOL SANDS Although the name may be slightly misleading – the beach is actually made up of shingle – the claim that it’s ‘South Devon’s most picturesque beach’ certainly holds water. Located just 15 minutes outside of Dartmouth, surrounding woodland runs right down to the edge of the beach, creating a combination of countryside and coast that few other beaches in the county can boast. There are sand pits, a bathing raft and water sports

equipment to hire so you can fully enjoy your day on the beautifully clear seas.

BREAKWATER BEACH Breakwater is a small shingle beach next to the picturesque Brixham Harbour and the long breakwater. With its calm warm waters it is a favourite for scuba diving. There are fish, seahorses, seagrass and interesting underwater landscapes to be seen. BROADSANDS BEACH Broadsands is a beautiful long sandy beach in an idyllic rural setting. It’s gently sloping gradient makes it a popular choice for families with children or those wishing to distance themselves from amusement arcades. At low tide interesting rock pools are exposed at the southern end of the beach and there is a large area of parkland directly behind the beach, the perfect spot for a game of football or cricket. CHURSTON COVE The secluded little cove of Churston is an idyllic spot surrounded by cliffs and wooded hillsides. The beach is peaceful and incredibly beautiful and consists of shingle and sand. There is a steep path leading down to the beach which passes through mature woodland and opens out to reveal a small cove with spectacular scenery.

DAWLISH WARREN Dawlish Warren Beach is one of South Devon’s top family beaches. A long sandy beach, distinctive sand dunes, an internationally recognised nature reserve and clean safe bathing waters.

which is an area of established park land.

ELBERRY COVE Elberry Cove is a pretty shingle beach with beautiful clear water which can only be reached by foot along the South West Coast Path from Broadsands or Brixham. This is a beautiful sheltered beach surrounded by wooded hillsides in an idyllic rural setting. EXMOUTH BEACH Sitting at the mouth of the River Exe, Exmouth is a traditional seaside town just half an hour drive away from Exeter. Often described as the gateway to the Jurassic Coast, its beach is also classically British with a promenade situated just behind the golden sands. As it’s such a large beach it won’t typically feels crowded and there is always ample room to do whatever familyoriented activity you like whether that’s a game of beach cricket, flying a kite, or taking the dog for a walk. GOODRINGTON SANDS This mainly sandy beach with clean, calm waters represents an unusual combination of attractive scenery, the Quaywest Water Park and Goodrington and Youngs Park,

HOLLICOMBE BEACH Set below high sandstone cliffs this sheltered beach is a real suntrap. At low tide interesting rock pools are exposed at both ends of this fine red sand beach. This delightful little bay provides the perfect setting to get away from the hustle and bustle of Torquay. The lovely Hollicombe Park is just above the beach. MEADFOOT BEACH Meadfoot is a shingle beach nestled below an array of spectacular cliffs which provides a perfect setting for those who prefer a quieter environment in which to relax. From the beach you can see Thatcher Rock and Brixham on the opposite side of the Bay. ODDICOMBE BEACH Nestled at the bottom of red sandstone cliffs Oddicombe beach is a sheltered haven for those looking for a relaxing day out. This attractive stretch of shingle beach is perfect for simply hiring a deck chair, lying back and enjoying the spectacular views. Tavistock Inn One of England’s oldest pubs, Tavistock Inn dates back to about 1413 when Newbridge was built. The bridge was “new” when it was built- hence it’s name - and so was the pub, a welcome stop for weary travellers who had just climbed Newbridge hill. And little has changed, for good beer, wines, spirits and soft drinks, including a fine selection of real ales are still dispensed to visitors from near and far, together with some of the best pub food you’ll find in Devon with local produce being used when available. Poundsgate, Dartmoor, TQ13 7NY. Tel: 01364 631251.

The Globe Inn The Globe’s life as a coach house started way back in the 1600s, and since then its role in the community hasn’t much changed.
