July 12-21 The Harrison Festival Society is gearing up for an exciting summer festival this July, with plans in place to present a broad array of musical styles from across Canada and around the Globe.

From July 12-21, the festival will feature concerts on the ungated Beach Stage, ticketed full evening shows in the Harrison Memorial Hall, a Children’s Day (Wednesday July 17), an evening of theatre, a Literary Café, an art exhibit in the Ranger Station Gallery, and a juried artisan market along Harrison’s stunning beachfront. This year marks the beginning of the festival’s 5th decade.

Harrison Festival Artistic Director Andy Hillhouse says that this year’s program features several cutting edge performers who will challenge audience expectations of traditional music and culture. “We in the west tend to think of cultures from other parts of the world as stuck back in time. We will see with a number of these performers that young roots musicians from around the world are incorporating the avant-garde into their work, as a way of expressing their cultural identity within a contemporary global context.”

Some of these forward-looking artists appearing on the Beach Stage include Korea’s Black String, who include electric guitar alongside traditional Korean instruments; Vancouver’s Haram, who combine middle-eastern and North African sounds with jazz improvisation; and The Aerialists, who combine Celtic fiddle and harp with deep bass, drum, and guitar grooves. In the hall, Tal National, from Niger, bring a psychedelic, rock and roll edge to their nation’s traditional music. Other performers over the week on the beach come from Cape Verde, Mexico, and Israel.

Of course, the Harrison Festival is very much about celebration, so the week will include some straight up fun, danceable music from around the world. The first Memorial Hall concert, on Saturday July 13, will feature the charismatic contemporary flamenco singer Marinah, coming all the way from Barcelona. Blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with flamenco singing, she and her

band create an infectiously life-affirming groove that should make for a great night out. Louisiana’s Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers will be playing authentic, rocking Zydeco music on Friday July 19 in the Memorial Hall. The Hamiltones, who have gained fame internationally as backing band for Ry Cooder, will be gracing the Memorial Hall stage on Saturday July 20 with their R and B, gospel-infused harmonies.

A variety of diverse cultures of Vancouver, and indeed across Canada, will be represented. Toronto’s Okan are two young Cuban-born women who play AfroCuban music of the highest caliber; Blisk, also from Toronto, fuse vocal traditions of Eastern Europe; and Matthew Byrne is perhaps the finest young traditional singer from Newfoundland today.

It is a program of powerful women singers. Israel’s Aveva updates an Ethiopian-Israeli musical tradition with contemporary sounds; Elida Almeida brings the joyful Afro-Portuguese culture of Cape Verde; and Iskwe has over the past few years established herself as a leading voice among Indigenous artists in this country.

The Harrison Festival of the Arts is not only about music, but spans different forms of artistic expression. The Ranger Station Gallery will feature a group show of west coast Indigenous artists, running throughout the month of July. And the Evening of Theatre on July 16 will be in partnership with the Chilliwack School of the Performing Arts, who will perform The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, a play about an autistic youth, that has been a smash hit in London. Children’s Day will feature a range of activities from crafts to theatre games, and will feature hip-hop children’s performer Rup Loops, as well as Bollywood dancer Karim Essa.

Tickets will go on sale for the festival in mid April.

From My Perspective...

Pink & Blue Kidz Clothing launched in August 2018. We are a store that is affordable for all families and a place to turn to for local resources in time of need.

My name is Dee and I am a local mom-preneure. I launched this business to accommodate my busy family and to be a benefit to low income families. My purpose: To raise awareness on how we donate within our community and to help struggling families.

As a mother of four I love taking my kids to special events, kids swaps, and markets! Over this past month we attended, The All About Kids Expo which was great fun and a help to our local food bank! We took a few trips to local markets and swaps as well.

As I look for new and upcoming events in the months ahead, such as the 24-Hour Summer Bidding Market, I wonder how many support us as a community? How many are giving back? Will there be any focus on what should (or shouldn’t) be donated? Do you consider what you donate, or do you grab the cans at the back of the pantry and send them on? In the last year my family has utilized our food bank, but had to throw away over half of what we received because of long past due expiration dates (some as many as two years past). Donations start with us the donors! Please think about what you put in the bin – until next time!

WHO WE ARE: We are a Non-Profit Society, wanting to grow into a “Charity” dedicated to working with “at risk” persons within our city and area, and helping find a ‘cure’ for juvenile diabetes. We have 8000 s.f. in two locations on Wellington Avenue in Chilliwack, where we run our ‘social enterprise’. A Home Decor Outlet and a Thrift Store are both fast becoming “DESTINATON” stops on Wellington Avenue.

We need ‘volunteers’ “VOLUNTEERS” and more of you to help with our programs, planned fund raising events, support our growing ability to gelp people ‘at risk’ who want to be part of us. In store, from home, from work, we do not care, IF you have a skill, a bit of time (4 hours a week, month) call us.

We need DONATIONS: furniture, clothing, bedding, china, antiques, collections, decor, dishes, art, hardware, tools; we wil look at anything that can be repurposed and is sellable. We can pick up at your home!

WHO WE WORK WITH: We, in

two short years, work with many local and area agencies in a support way; Community Services, Corrections Canada, S.A.S.E.T., Bethesda, Quest, Ann Davies, Cryus Centre, and local area churches. We have partnered with UFV, Diabetes Canada, Sto’Lo, Work BC, District #33 S.B. and Corrections Canada to provide work related skills training, in a practical fashion. We provide opportunity for many volunteers with ‘challenges’ to give back to their Community. We also provide eight employment positions.

Spring Minestrone Method

2 tbsp. olive oil 2 medium carrots, chopped 1 medium leek, thinly sliced 8 sprigs fresh thyme, tied together 3 large red potatoes, chopped 2 qt. lower-sodium vegetable 1 bunch asparagus, sliced 1 can (15 oz.) navy beans 2 tbsp. chopped fresh dill

In 8-quart saucepot, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil on medium. Add carrots, leek, fresh thyme, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook 8 minutes, stirring. Add red potatoes, chopped, and lower-sodium vegetable or chicken broth. Partially cover and heat to boiling on high; reduce heat to simmer.

Cook 25 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Add asparagus and simmer 3 minutes or until tender. Discard thyme. Stir in navy beans (optional), fresh dill, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1â „2 teaspoon pepper.

Grilled Ratatouille Linguine Ingredients 12 oz. linguine 2 small zucchini, halved lengthwise 1 small eggplant, sliced lengthwise 1 red pepper, halved 1 yellow pepper, halved 1 red onion, cut into rounds 2 tbsp. olive oil Salt & Pepper Grated vegan cheese and chopped basil

Method Heat grill on medium-high. Cook linguine per package directions. Meanwhile, brush zucchini, eggplant, peppers, and red onion with oil and season with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Grill until just tender, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Transfer to a cutting board and cut into pieces. Toss linguine with grilled vegetables, drizzling with more oil as desired. Top with grated vegan cheese and basil.

Five Corners: History, Growth and Opportunity Generations of Chilliwack residents have a connection to Five Corners; the intersection where Young Road, Yale Road and Wellington Avenue meet. Whether it is stopping in for an ice cream, picking up a new book, going to a movie, or operating a business, each person has a different perspective of what Five Corners means to them.

Archeological records date the presence of the Stó:lô First Nations people in Chilliwack to over 10,000 years ago. By comparison, the Township of Chilliwack is relatively new, incorporated 146 years ago in 1873. In nearly 150 years, much has changed since its departure from the original settlement on the banks of the Fraser River, to the new epicenter of a continuously growing municipality.

“Five Faces: Five Corners, The Social Experience of Chilliwack’s Downtown” opening Thursday May 16th 2019. This inaugural exhibit by Curator Anna Irwin will focus on the concept of connection and how social experience has shaped the area known as Five Corners. The exhibit will highlight five local figures past and present, their connection to the area, and their continued influence on the changing downtown landscape. By conserving water today, we reduce energy consumption, save money and help sustainably manage our precious groundwater resources.

This summer, it’s okay to let your lawn go a little brown.

On an average day, Chilliwack uses 29 million litres of water. In summer, we use up to 52 million litres of water per day. Lawn watering uses approximately 30% of the summer water consumption. Help conserve our water by limiting your lawn watering to the time periods below.

What to do during dry spells • Let your lawn turn brown. Most lawns only require 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water per week and it will recover in the fall when regular rains resume.

• Mow high. Mow your lawn when the grass is 6-8 cm (2.5-3 inches) high. It will develop a deep and extensive root system that retains moisture better.

• Keep your mower blades sharp. A dull blade tears grass and causes more moisture loss.

• Keep weeds out. Water hungry weeds soak up water.

Tips to Reduce Water Consumption Here are just a few of the things you can do to save litres of water at a time inside and outside the home: Prepare your lawn - aerate, compost and weed it.

Water only lawn and vegetation, not driveways.

Plant drought resistant plants.

Run only full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.

Purchase a rain barrel or water conservation kit from City Hall.

Don’t run water when rinsing dishes, washing fruits and vegetables, brushing teeth or shaving.
