My Refurbished Kitchen with the help of local craftsmen

W

hen it came time to update my Kitchen I chose the people I know and trust to create my vision.

For my floor I selected a grey limestone from Padstone Natural Stone Tiles who are situated at Suite 5, Old Barn Offices, East Guldeford, Nr Rye. They have a superb showroom displaying a wide range of natural stone tiles in their natural environment. Padstone offers a personal tailored service to each customer ensuring you get the best natural stone product to suit your individual lifestyle. I chose Padstone to design, supply and fit my natural stone because owner Patrick has many years experience, from the design stage through to the finished project. There were many different facets of the installation which had to be planned for including the incorporation of underfloor heating and the correction of the floor surface which was uneven in parts. All of these were achieved with ease and I am looking forward to some wonderful underfloor warmth this winter. I have known Ellwoods Plumbing since he started in 2009 and he has always been very proficient with all the jobs I have given him. Owner Will is dedicated to bringing you quality plumbing and a friendly customer service at a reasonable rate. Whether your business or home is in need of plumbing services, Ellwoods has the right experience for the job, highly skilled and professional, focused on providing excellent service. Tom Papworth from Papworth Electrical was my chosen electrician recommended to me by Adams Electrical. There were many switches and sockets which had to be removed, moved or replaced and I also had spotlights fitted accross the whole ceiling. Tom was able to advise me on what was possible and incorporate extra details such us colour changing downlighters. What’s On Editor

Goodwood Revival

Exclusive Pictures

Geoff Brabham

Tiff Needell

Goodwood pays tribute to Sir Jack Brabham

F

ifty years ago Sir Jack Brabham became the only man to win the Formula One World Championship in a car bearing his own name. It was a feat that will, almost certainly, never be repeated. The same year he came first in the Formula Two event at Goodwood, the last major international race before the Sussex circuit was closed. Racing returned to the track 18 years ago with the first of its popular Revival meetings and now Goodwood has celebrated the life of the great Australian with a tribute that included a parade by over 30 of his most significant racing cars. Many of the Brabham family attended the event. Significantly Sir Jack’s youngest son, David – himself a Le Man 24-hours winner – is one of the drivers. The sight of him with period helmet in his father’s 1966

World Championship winning BrabhamRepco BT24 rolled back the years. ‘When you think what he achieved, he was hugely influential,’ said David as he prepared to climb into the BT24. ‘These cars are part of motor sport history. It is pretty cool to be driving a Brabham-Repco around here.’ David also pointed out the significance of Goodwood to his father, Sir Jack having his first race in Britain at the Sussex circuit. Revival host Lord March agreed stating. ‘Jack has a special place in the history of motor racing at Goodwood. Over the years he must have driven more laps of Goodwood than any other top line driver, not only winning races but also testing his cars here through the 1960s and 1970s.’

The line up of cars for the parade included many examples of the Brabham marque from the earliest BT2 Formula Junior to the BT33 with which he scored his final Grand Prix victory – the South African - in 1970. Sir Jack’s undoubted influence on the Indianapolis 500 is illustrated by the Cooper T54 with which he took on the mighty Indy roadsters, as well as the BT25 with which he contested the 1969 500. There were, naturally, plenty of Coopers, Jack having been closely associated with the make before setting up his own company, as well as other cars from his illustrious career. Drivers included fellow World Champions John Surtees and Sir Jackie Stewart while Sir Stirling Moss also played tribute to his great rival, as a passenger in one of the Aston Martin endurance racers.

2016 Rye Arts Festival Rye proudly hosts East Sussex’s biggest Arts Festival, and the 45th annual Rye Arts Festival between 17th September and 1st October promises to be not just the biggest but the best ever!

W

hatever floats your artistic boat, Rye will have something to offer - music (contemporary and classical), book talks, historical and nature walks, professional theatre, film, art exhibitions and children’s events. Take classical music. For the fifth time the fantastic young professional singers and musicians of Euphonia Company, who are at the start of their professional careers, are coming to Rye. And this year they are bringing two different operas! The Festival opens on 17th September. This is a new production by Euphonia of Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw which is based on a ghost story written by the author Henry James after he moved to Rye, where he lived for many years until his death 100 years ago. And the Festival closes on 1st October with a truly joyous production of Don Pasquale, which wowed the London audience last November and gained great reviews for the fabulous young American Soprano Lauren Libaw. Continuing the international theme, the classical programme sees a welcome return of The Wihan Quartet – a Londonbased Czech string quartet with a global

040_October040.indd 1

reputation for mastery of their national music. La Serenissima are British but they play 18th Century Italian baroque music to audiences around the world. And young Korean pianist Tzu-Yin Huang, winner of the 2016 Hastings International Piano competition, is jetting in especially from the USA! Contemporary music takes us around the world too. The Coal Porters are a BritishAmerican band who play self-styled ‘alt bluegrass’. Yeehah! And the best of the Celtic fringe are coming too. Lynched are a young Irish folk band from Dublin who are winning fans around the world and are not to be missed on 17th September. And 9Bach, a hauntingly beautiful Welsh folk group, play on 22nd September. On 24th September the seductively sensual sounds of the Sahara arrive with Terakaft – a band from Mali who play Tuareg Blues! Literary talks are varied. Joan Bakewell, who is quite unbelievably 80, has lots to reflect on having lived a full life! Loyd Grosman no longer look through the keyhole, but he does look at paintings and gives an insight into the great 18th history painter Benjamin West. And Henry Jeffreys argues that Britain gave the world booze! - 40 -

Be it Claret or Port, champagne or sherry Britons’ seemingly insatiable penchant for drink kick-started, grew and supported a global industry with us at its heart. Cheers! The Film programme marks the passing this year of David Bowie and Prince with screenings of Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and Purple Rain. And theatre is represented by For All Time on 19th September. The play is set one night in 1613 when William Shakespeare and John Fletcher (born in Rye) have until dawn to complete their collaboration on the play The Noble Kinsmen! Westfield Beer Festival Continues to grow

I

f you like great beer and food, and meeting friendly locals then the Westfield Beer Festival should be on your annual list. Held at The New Inn, the event creates a unique feel, really emphasizing how cool the craft beer industry has become over the last few years. Once again the event was a huge success with hundreds of people in attendance. Delicious classic food with a Hog roast and BBQ, live music and the finest craft beers were all enjoyed by a good crowd of people perusing their love of quality beer and good company. All the beers were sourced locally and the meat came from award winning Westfield Butcher ‘Archers’. The popular ‘Mutineers’ entertained the crowd throughout the day with their unique brand of live music. Patrick and his friendly staff and helpers at The New Inn deserve huge praise for both the delicious food, amazing drink, and the excellent atmosphere they created. Having grown from it’s revival event in 2016 the Westfield Beer Festival is set to grow even bigger next year.

To commemorate this occasion, they are proud to announce the opening of their newest Practice, North Chailey Dental Care offering exceptional care for all the family’s dental needs. This fully refurbished surgery, with the latest equipment, is the place to go for all your general dental care. The Principal, Dr Esmail Harunani said, “Regular dental checks are really important – it’s key to have a professional check to see what is going on in your mouth every six months for any change. We are welcoming new patients to be registered on the NHS now for a limited time!” NHS treatment is undertaken by all of their dentists. Dentistry For You dentists also undertake private dental treatment so patients already seen on the NHS may wish to mix some private treatment with their NHS treatment, for example cosmetic treatment, which may not be available through the health service. Birds of a feather.. W ell what a lovely hot summer we have had. I have spent a lot of time just peacefully sitting in my garden watching my feathered friends entertain me. I occasionally stirred myself to get and enjoy a nice, cool Gin & Tonic. Just the one (or two) you understand. It is vital for our birds to also take in some water and perhaps have a splash around to clean up their feathers and partake in a refreshing dip. Birdbaths are absolutely crucial when we have fairly long sunny spells. Simply putting out a plant saucer with water would be very beneficial for the birds. Here are a few from my garden..
