THE CASE FOR ROOF MOUNTED SOLAR PANELS – PART 1 The South Coast from Dover to Chichester attracts more sunshine than anywhere else in the UK. Here you will also find thousands of acres of exposed south facing roofs and yet just a tiny fraction have any solar panels, either PV or solar thermal. Why is that? We know many home owners experience energy bill and carbon emission concerns. Most are also aware of the technologies available and yet we have made little progress in comparison to other European countries, even with generous government subsidies. Many argue that the visual impact of panels on the roof is a contributory factor. tiles. If we really are committed to renewable solar technologies, and most surveys tell us we are, then the alternative is to cover more of our countryside in panels and wind turbines! The Government have recently supported roof mounted systems as preferable to ground mounted PV farms occupying our countryside. SolarUK supports that position. SolarUK is a Kent and Sussex based solar company, one of the very few that actually manufactures a fully accredited and very efficient (93%) solar thermal panel right here in the heart of Sussex. We design and install PV, Solar Thermal and Heat Pump systems across the UK. Established in 2000, we provide a bespoke service that extends beyond installation to yearly servicing and maintenance.

Royal Ascot 2014 The Individual, The imaginative and the Fabulous

Excitement, Pageantry, Fashion & Style A day at Royal Ascot is about so much more than the exhilarating racing action. Featuring high fashion, sumptuous cuisine and pageantry, Royal Ascot promises an occasion that will last long in the memory.

Over 300 years of racing

It was Queen Anne who first saw the potential for a racecourse at ascot whilst out riding in 1711. The first every race meeting took place that year, with the first fourday meeting in 1768. The Berkshire race meeting has become much more than horses and royalty in recent years with fashion, in particular outlandish hats, taking centre stage.

The Royal Procession

On each of the five days of Royal Ascot Her Majesty The Queen and her guests arrive at Royal Ascot by horsedrawn landaus, travelling down the straight mile before circuling the iconic Parade Ring. Continuing a tradition started by King George IV in 1825, the Landaus passes guests within every enclosure. Royal Ascot has a proud history of defining moments, providing the ultimate platform for the world’s finest racehorses and jockeys.

Samaritans are often seen at local events, getting their name out there and letting people know what they do. But everyone has heard of Samaritans, haven’t they? Aren’t they the ones that help people when they’re suicidal? That seems to be the normal reaction - a group of wellmeaning people who try to do good. But who are they and what do they really do for the people that contact them and their communities? There are 201 Samaritan branches across the UK, with 7 in Kent. Each branch is staffed entirely by volunteers who give their time to listen to anyone who needs the opportunity to talk about what they are going through and how they are feeling. The Volunteers are drawn from a broad cross section of society, all united in their desire to care. We take pride in our service and approachability and since we are a family business trading since 1971, you will find a unique and friendly atmosphere with us that you can’t find anywhere else.

Vehicle Still Under Warranty?

Vehicle warranties typically only cover against defects that may cause your car to malfunction. Other general repairs and servicing are liable to be charged and previously, vehicle manufacturers could make their warranties conditional on the vehicle being returned to them for these additional services. Under the EC Block Exemption Regulations (BER) motorists can now take their vehicle to a garage of their choice for all servicing and repairs and this will not affect their warranty as long as we use the manufacturer’s service schedules for your specific vehicle and use original or equal quality parts. This is good news for every one as you can save up to 50% on your service if you book it with us and keep your warranty intact. So yes, it’s quite safe to have your vehicle serviced at Brett Tyres and not invalidate your warranty. As we have access to all the latest main dealer service schedules and can perform your service to main dealer specification.

‘Girls will be Boys’ at Bowler Crab’s Twelfth Night The classic Shakespearean comedy about mistaken identity and gender confusion was brought to life by Bowler Crab’s talented and creative cast of characters. The company performed an upbeat and quirky version of Shakespeare’s classic, staged in the open air, with mistaken identities, cross-dressing maidens, and above all a good dose of comedy. Well crafted and imaginatively performed, the company, under the direction of Stephen J John, have created a piece of theatre that kept the audience engaged and giggling until the end. Olivia’s ale-soaked cousin, the wide-eyed Sir Toby Belch ( Laurie Brook Summers) had the audience in stitches, while his dimwitted companion, Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Alexander Hunt) and Olivia’s lady in waiting, Maria (a superb Imogen Amey-Howarth) combined to make a delightful trio. Olivia’s pompous steward, Malvolio was also an audience favourite having just the right stature to add another level to his comic perfotmance. See below for details of Bowler Crabs next production

Cutting Garden snippets July… Summer abundance! Cutting or dead-heading encourages further flowering, so it’s important to keep on top of it! Try not to allow plants to set seed , or flowering will come to an end. Cutting should be done at the coolest part of the day, using sharp clean snips. Have a bucket of cold, clean water with you and place the cut stems straight into it. Leave your cut flowers somewhere cool and dark if you can, perhaps

overnight, before you arrange them. We grow lots of Cosmos. They produce masses of flowers and their lovely ferny foliage makes a fabulous filler in vases. The taller varieties need some support unless in a sheltered spot. As with all tall and potentially floppy plants, it is best to put support in place before the plants really need it!

Happy growing and cutting! Sussex Cutting Garden.

Property

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made By Landlords 1. Not investing in kitchens and bathrooms - It costs relatively little to tile a bathroom and provide clean and new worktops in kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms are a major “turnoff” on viewings. 2. Installing light cream coloured carpets - They look modern, but stain quickly – Darker shades are much more serviceable. 3. Not reviewing rent regularly, particularly when the same tenant stays in the property. Allowing rent levels to fall behind market rate can significantly impact your property. 4. Not Carrying out credit checks on tenants- The most credit worthy looking tenant may have CCJs and a record of exploiting unwary landlords. 5. Not putting up a “to let” board- As a result no-one passing and no one locally knows it’s available to let.

If you have any questions about letting your property, or would like free, no obligation advice please call us on 01424 751805.

My mother feels safe and cosseted and this is best exemplified by the fact that she has actually started sleeping in in the morning, a mark of the comfort you have brought her. I cannot thank you enough for all that you and your team are doing... you are wonderful!! Dementia care‌. in St Leonards Following an extensive refurbishment programme Lauriston has just opened a new space for people with dementia in our welcoming and impressive care home. Members of our staff team are specially trained in dementia care to deliver the appropriate type of attention and support to each individual in our home. We provide a number of opportunities for people with dementia to harness their happy memories and sense of self. Through music, creative activities, a reminiscence area with photographs and various personal possessions, we open up alternative ways for people with dementia to communicate and express themselves. Each of our residents has a beautiful private room all of which are en suite. Our wide range of food is freshly cooked by our own in house chef, and we are proud of our

landscaped gardens and patio areas, tea bars and lounges and welcoming other communal areas for people to meet friends and family. If someone you love has dementia, contact Helena Barrow, our Home Manager, who will be able to help you find out more about how we can help‌and care. Birds of a Feather W hat a super month May was for garden bird watching. My garden at home and the nature area at the shop were buzzing with a lovely assortment of Tits, Finches, Thrushes, Robins and Dunnocks. A food that is very popular in gardens at this time are Suet Pellets, in a tray, used in a mesh peanut feeder or simply spread on the ground these nourishing easy to eat nibbles will attract a large variety of birds. I am by no means regarded as “green fingered” but by pure luck some time

ago I planted a small June berry shrub. Amelanchier, not only does it provide beautiful white flowers in spring but the berries are loved and enjoyed by many of my garden birds during the breeding season. Blue, Great and Marsh Tits hang precariously while delicately nibbling away at the rich pickings. I also have two pairs of Blackcaps which regularly pop in, watching these fantastic Warblers struggle to remove the berries - then take them back to their waiting broods provides me with lots of ‘nature entertainment’.

A quick mention of Springwatch. It just seemed to improve this year, even as a keen birder the Bittern sequences were mind boggling, something I would never be able to see under normal circumstances. Although I have criticised this programme in previous years I must give them ten out of ten for pure, top quality entertainment. Even that bloke Chris Packham bloke was excellent.
