COVID 19 ANNOUNCEMENT

Every event comes from an idea and a need, and those things haven’t stopped for Whats On Digest. The last few weeks have flung society as we know it into a flurry of change and decision paralysis. From becoming sanitary servants, to the opportunist re-inventing themselves, the world has tipped and everyone is struggling to keep their footing. But some things never change, no matter what is happening around us. Humans are curious and resourceful creatures, when one door shuts we search for another to open, where opportunity exists we will venture towards it. Because our business has always been to bring people together in participation, and to build community through entertainment, fun activities and an abundance of life that is what we will continue to do. None of those things have changed. Over the next month, and maybe more we will capture some interesting, new things that people are doing to keep themselves and their virtual community entertained. We will share with you, the businesses that have pushed all the boundaries on ingenuity and are continuing to offer products and services. You will be able to continue following the What’s On Digest by subscribing to our newsletter or on our social media platforms. We look forward to keeping you connected. ~ Carolyn Sahlstrom, Victoria Publisher

THINGS TO DO TO MARK HISTORY Right now we are living a very historical moment. Building a legacy or simple acts of kindness that help people stay connected through these times of separation is one of the things that will be reflected upon in the future.

 MAKE A PHOTO ALBUM. We don’t

know what 20, 50 or 100 years will be like from now, so we can’t rely on digital compatibility so its important to create some tangible history.

PHOTOS & VIDEOS. Other interesting photos are the signage telling us how we should live, lets capture some of that. Take pictures of what children have been doing, like coloured rocks, and chalk art on roads, all the hearts in houses, birthday parades, honouring the front line. Having a 6 ft separation meeting or gathering, what people did for hugs when they couldn’t touch. Create an album, you can even print it and turn it into a hardcover book using some online sources such as www.mixbook. com OR www.artifactuprising.com.

TO MARK HISTORY

TIME CAPSULE. Many families do these when there is a milestone in their life. Create a COVID-19 time capsule that includes a record of time and thoughts during a pandemic.

COLLECT MEMORANDUMS. Photos, poetry, games you played, a recipe that was popular or new, even some voice recordings. Personal goals, frustrations, fears and reflections. Anything that will tell the story of what way happening.

MAKE A 2020 CANADIAN FLAG. Create a flag that illustrates your community or your family during this time. Hang it from your house and encourage others to do the same.

RECORD STAGES. Husbands and wives, parents and children or by yourself, let’s face it the first month was like nothing we have experienced before. There were so many stages of mental breakdowns, drinking, eating, goal setting, dancing, colouring hair, and staying busy to block out some realities. Many lost track of what day it was, and what time of day it was, morning become night, night became day and so on. Record this with photos, videos, blogs, or stories.

MAKE A LEGACY. Decide on a contribution you want to make to the world or to your community or family. Simple acts of kindness is a good place to start.

MAKE GREETING CARDS. Funny, touching, lovable, inspirational. Whatever strikes you COVID-19 handmade greeting cards will have special values to many.

TURN YOURSELF INSIDE OUT. Send a random someone something you have made with your resources together with something that is from your town.

BUILD A FAMILY TREE. This is a great time to find your family has time and extended family can be reached through email or social platforms. Make a hard copy book / album or a special decorative piece in your home, makes a discussion point and is easy to add changes and additions to.

REINACT A HISTORICAL PAINTING. Take a famous painting and using things or clothes you have, recreate a famous painting with your family or yourself that will become a Historical image 2020.

BECOME A FUTURE TALKING HEAD. Create a video of yourself telling yourself about what is coming in 2020 that will change your life. Of course you can’t alter the past or future because of the butterfly effect, but what would you say that would prepare yourself. Something like this video. youtu.be/Ms7capx4Cb8

Gardening Basics for Beginners

There are so many easy and fun ways to spend time in your garden. It’s not only therapeutic, but can be enjoyed by every member of the family. If your gardens are restricted to balconies or patios, don’t worry, there’s lots that can be grown. And, as it happens, our first segment will be on “container” gardening with veggies, herbs, berries. Spring is prime planting time… so grab a bucket, some soil, a few seeds, or a variety of veggie starts - and we’ll get started.

Mixed Planter: Lettuce is one of the easiest veggies to grow in a planter. Soon after planting you will be harvesting fresh salads! Different varieties of leafy lettuce can be planted together for a long harvesting time. When the lettuce leaves are big enough, just pluck as many of the outer leaves you need and the rest will keep growing.

whatsondigest.com | MAY 2020

Herbs (drought tolerant, and mostly deer resistant) are another easy pot to put together. You can plant up to 5 herbs in a 14” pot for year long harvest! Be sure to water daily during the heat of the summer.

Window boxes are a great for planting an assortment of veggies, fruits and even some flowers! A great mix of companion plants will ensure success. Try lettuce, green onions, and strawberries together. As well, you can add a couple of marigolds to keep aphid (Little bugs) away. Hint: A pot of mint near by will help deter the slugs from your planter. Larger pots – 14” wide or more: Tomatoes - 1 per pot. An average sized tomato would prefer a nice deep pot, such as a 5 gallon bucket. If you have a pot larger than that... Fantastic! Try growing a cherry tomato or plum tomato as they are very vigorous and very heavy producers! It’s the perfect “first” tomato plant. If you are limited for space, then look for a dwarf tomato variety. We have some new and tasty varieties that will be available in April. There are some new, tasty varieties that will be available soon!

whatsondigest.com | MAY 2020

Blueberries: 1 per pot Berry production is better with 2 different varieties. Blueberries need to be planted in a peat rich soil. This helps retain moisture keeping plants happy.

Larger pots – 14” wide or more continued: Pole beans and pole peas Plant 3 clusters of plants per pot. Poke 3 bamboo poles evenly into the perimeter of the pot and tied at the top. This creates a simple trellis that your beans will love to climb! Enjoy beans all season! Cucumbers do very well in a pot. Try miniature varieties such as Cuccino, Piccolino or Patio Snacker. Loads of tasty small cukes for the summer. Be sure to keep cucumber plants evenly moist to avoid that bitter taste.

Hanging Baskets: Tomatoe Baskets Did you know you can have Trailing cherry tomatoes basket? Tumbler and cherry falls are two tasty varieties. Strawberries Varieties such as Eversweet, Fort Laramie or Quinault will produce tasty berries all season long.

Life Hacks Ice Cubes in the Dryer get out wrinkles. Place half a dozen large ice cubes in with your load and your clothes will be wrinkle free, but not if you leave them over night. Pick up broken glass with white bread but will work equally well with wheat bread, its a life save for finding those little chips. Foil on your BananasJust when your bananas get to that perfect ripeness you can hold them for at least 4 to 5 days by wrapping foil around their tops. Pen spring around cords for USB and chargers will stop them from fraying. If your extra savvy you can wrap it again with tape and gently melt the tape to the spring. Improve your wifi with an used soda can; I can hear a thousand little tech geeks saying “of course”, but lets face it, your minority and never around when we need you. Flip-Flop Fixer If you’ve ever had a flipflop pop out of place while you were walking, you’re going to greatly enjoy this simple hack. But, you’ll probably be a little peeved you didn’t think of it sooner. Strawberry Straw Push a stainless steel straw to the the bottom centre of a strawberry to remove the stem.
