The grocer walked over and, trying to be friendly, asked the boy if he had a lot of laundry to do.

“Oh, no laundry,” the boy said. “I’m going to wash my dog.”

“But you shouldn’t use this to wash your dog. It’s very powerful and if you wash your dog in this, he’ll get sick. In fact, it might even kill him.”

But the boy was not stopped by this and carried the detergent to the counter and paid for it, even as the grocer still tried to talk him out of washing his dog.

About a week later the boy was back in the store shopping. The grocer asked the boy how his dog was doing.

“Oh, he died,” the boy said.

The grocer said, “I tried to tell you not to use that detergent on your dog.”

“Well,” the boy replied, “I don’t think it was the detergent that killed him.”

“Oh I’m sorry. How did he die?”

This year brings a softer change with pale pink, soft blues and whimsical iridescent lavenders. Pastel colours are coming back into favour with brides for spring and summer weddings. Soft and warm shades of brown, such as sand and fawn, are also growing in popularity for men’s wear, and will be used as accent colours throughout. While metallics are still a popular choice this year, many brides are forgoing traditional silver and gold in favour of bronzes or brown tones, and using touches of these everywhere, from invitations to decor.

Budgeting isn’t fun. Not one bit fun. So if you like fun then you might want to stop reading right now.

BUT budgeting is powerful and easy so maybe you should just stick around for a few more lines.

Ever heard the saying: Knowledge is power!?

Well, when you know your own personal numbers, that gives you a power that no one can take away. Knowing those numbers can reduce stress, increase confidence and literally change lives.

Figuring out how to manage life on the money you have can be the key to happiness. That’s how powerful a budget can be.

A budget isn’t a little box you have to live in; the purpose of a budget is to understand exactly how much money you need to cover your necessities and how much money is leftover at the end of the month. Knowing how much is leftover after all your needs are taken care of gives you the power to decide how you’re going to spend that money.

Will you save for a down payment on a home? contribute to a TFSA? buy clothes? pay off your debt? Or, perhaps, travel?

And if there’s nothing leftover or, worse yet, a deficit then that gives you the power to make changes. The choices are simple: increase income or decrease spending. Knowing there’s a shortfall may be the incentive to ask for that raise, get a second job, start a side business or move on from a dead-end job.

Reducing what you spend can seem impossible but that’s really because we fool ourselves into believing that many of our wants are actually needs. Needs include: food, water, clothing, shelter, medications and transportation; wants are everything else. For example, a family of four may believe they need a four bedroom house when an affordable two bedroom condo may be

the answer to making ends meet.
