GOLD CAMPAIGN february 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

V

alentine’s Day is the festival of love birds across the world, irrespective of the nation, caste, religion or creed.

The traditions of Valentine's Day are broad and the celebration of love and lovers traces its roots back to ancient times, when people paid honour to the Roman God of Fertility. This was known as the Feast of Lupercalia, and was celebrated even then on February 14th. The heart is associated with Valentine's Day and is considered to be the source of all human emotions. The heart is also a symbol of Variety, The Children's Charity whose Gold Heart pin fundraising program has been around since 1991. The sale of the gold heart-shaped pins started years ago in the UK on Valentine’s Day and since then, Variety has asked everyone to wear their heart on their sleeve in a show of support for children who have special needs. Variety has been Pharmasave's charity of choice for the last 15 years and all Pharmasave’s raise money throughout the year to help many underprivileged children in need of medical assistance. The campaign has raised over $100 million world-wide and Qualicum Beach Pharmasave owner Sandy Conn says she

fb.com/whatsonpqb 9

and her staff are happy to have contributed to that total. Variety’s mission is to raise funds and distribute grants throughout British Columbia to inspire hope, enrich lives, and build a better future for children who have special needs. Conn said they like to show their support at the community level and bring awareness to Variety programs because it has helped so many children and their families. “If you have never needed Variety you might not be aware of the services they offer, but it is a wonderful support system for families going through challenges. There have been several families on the island that have benefited from it,” she pointed out.

VARIETY CLUB GOLD HEART PINS CAN BE PURCHASED AT PHARMASAVE STORES IN QUALICUM BEACH AND PARKSVILLE, AS WELL AS AT MANY OTHER RETAILERS THROUGHOUT BC.

As well as selling heart pins for $3.00 each, Qualicum Beach Pharmasave is holding a special event on Valentine’s Day to raise money for Variety. For a donation to the charity, ladies can book a makeup application with cosmetics manager Jennifer Spratt and her staff. Qualicum Beach Pharmasave has an extensive selection of cosmetic lines and products and Spratt and her team offer personalized make-overs and will even teach how to recreate the look at home. To book an appointment call 250-752-3011.

Family Day february 10, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

I

f you want to go hog wild on BC Family Day, you should head to the Coombs Fairgrounds for a full of day of familyorientated activities.

Adkins says many of the activities they foster through the Coombs Fair will be included and this year they are even providing more space for the local 4-H club.

This is the second event volunteers with the Coombs Fair and the Arrowsmith Community Recreation Association have organized for the newest provincial holiday.

With the assistance of student volunteers from Kwalikum Senior Secondary School and several clubs and organizations from the community, there will be many demonstrations taking place in the Arrowsmith Hall.

Last year on the very first BC Provincial Family Day, organizers were hoping for at least 500 people but than 2,000 showed up, so this year they are ready for the masses.

“The turnout was pretty amazing. We had people from all over Vancouver Island show up because there was nothing else going on … but we were happy to do it“, said Debbie Adkins, a spokesperson with the Coombs Fair. The afternoon will include a wide array of games, activities, demonstrations of heritage crafts, animals and more from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Every visitor will be treated to one free hot dog and a beverage.

Children will get an opportunity to explore some of the history of the area and participate in some of the activities the pioneers did daily, such as making butter the old-fashioned way. Adkins said Tom Farkus led the demonstrations on butter and honeymaking last year and he is coming back with his sweet gifts from nature including honeycomb cells. “He is a great guy. Kids get a piece of honeycomb to chew. It is an educational activity but they have fun while learning.” Other groups presenting include; the Coombs Historical Archive Society, Friends of Hamilton Marsh, Oceanside Wood Carvers, North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre and the Bradley Centre Spinners. Games like checkers and pin-the-tail on the

donkey will also be setup and the children’s garden railway will be rolling along a track which is 30 feet in diameter for all to enjoy. Artists Dona Naylor is coming with an art display for children and there will be many other craft tables set up. With complimentary pop corn supplied by Dolly’s Home Hardware and plenty of free parking, this Family Day event will go on rain or shine - at the Coombs Agricultural Grounds on 1014 Ford Road.

Valentine’s Special

A Cajun named Jean Paul moved to Texas and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day the farmer drove up and said, “Sorry, but I got some bad news. The donkey died.” “Well then, just give me my money back.” “I can’t do that. I went and spent it already.” “OK then, just unload the donkey.” “What ya gonna do with em?” “I’m gonna raffle him off.” “Ya can’t raffle off a dead donkey!” “Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anyone he’s dead.” A month later the farmer met up with the Cajun and asked, “What happened with the dead donkey?” “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $2 a piece and made a profit of $898.” “Didn’t anyone complain?” “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his $2 back.”

the lion the fox March 1, 2014 story by BRENDA GOUGH

E

xactly one year after their memorable performance in Parksville, the folk rock trio The Lion The Bear The Fox are returning for another intimate show at the Quality Bayside Resort. The March 1st concert is being held in conjunction with the opening night of the annual Brant Wildlife Festival. Hosted by The Nature Trust of BC, the Brant Wildlife Festival gala has undergone some changes for 2014 in hopes of attracting more people and that is where The Lion The Bear The Fox come in. The trio has been described as a musical force of nature and when The Nature Trust of BC folks found out that the band was booked to play at the Bayside Tidal Room in late February, they convinced organizer Megan Olsen to switch dates and join their fundraising event. Olsen, who is the owner of Arbutus Events, agreed that her show was a great fit for the Brant Wildlife Festival and she said the band will bring a new dynamic to the opening night party. “Just the name of the band is a good tie-in” Olsen said. “The band has three solid front

men and there are not that many bands that have so many strong positions and lead the band.” With over three decades of combined experience, all three band members; Christopher Arruda (the lion), Cory Woodward (the bear) and Ryan McMahon (the fox), are known for the passion they bring to their performances. Olsen describes the group as a raw folk rock band with a grunge edge. The 19+ show starts at 8:00 p.m. and will follow the burger and beverage Brant event, which also includes live music by Faye Smith and Dave Marco, a photo display by the Oceanside Photographers and a silent auction. Olsen has been instrumental in bringing new and talented musical acts to Oceanside and says the Quality Bayside Resort is always willing to accommodate her musical acts. That relationship has created an opportunity for music lovers to enjoy high calibre talent in a small venue close to home. “I like the venue at the Bayside. The room is intimate and bands get a good vibe from the room,” she acknowledged.

Last year Olsen booked Juno Award winner David Myles into the Tidal Room for an incredible show. That was no small feat, considering Parksville was the only Vancouver Island date on his cross-country tour. Many of the bands Olsen books have been part of the Peak Performance Project hosted by Vancouver radio station The Peak. The contest promotes BC musicians and since it started many of the top finalists have achieved success. Olsen said her mission is to bring great music to this area that people

may not be aware of. “There is local talent out there and my goal is to get people listening to newer music. The Lion The Bear The Fox were named Top 20 Finalists in the Peak Performance Project last summer and since then have been sharing their big voices, beautiful harmonies and honest songs with a fan base that continues to grow. Their Freedom Tour started February 8th and will continue through British Columbia and Alberta until the end of March.

Tickets for the March 1st date are $20 in advance or $25 at the door and can be purchased at the Quality Bayside Resort or online at www.arbutusevents.ca
