Hundreds of years after the romantics of the Middle Ages, lovers, couples and spouses express their tenderness for each other on February 14 by giving conventional gifts of flowers, chocolate and handwritten cards and letters.

Is this trend on its way out? Do people want to celebrate the traditional Valentines Day in a non-traditional manner? We asked the people of Campbell River what they want out of Valentines Day 2014, and it appears those classic heart-felt customs are no longer quite what locals are looking for from their sweethearts.

Although we received many romantic and unusual responses to our question, one generous Campbell River woman told us that her ideal way to spend Valentines Day would be to donate blood with her paramour. A true romantic! (Or maybe she just loves to hear him scream!)

If you are scared of blood, but not commitment, one woman expressed her desire to receive a homemade, sentimental gift which shows love, thought and effort. From her beau she wants no flowers, no expensive dinner, and no hot date night, but a deck of cards expressing only 52 reasons why he loves her. If he plays (and prepares) those cards right, he won’t have to compliment her for a full year – she can simply pull a card each week for the next 12 months!

Pet Tips Problem with Overweight Dogs According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 54% of the nation’s dogs and cats are overweight. Ernie Ward, DVM and founder of APOP is not happy about it.

“We often try to compare what’s happening with our pets to the childhood obesity epidemic, since it’s a similar pattern that emerges,” said Dr. Ward. “The biggest problem is that by the time most people recognize the problem, it’s often too late.”

So why is it that having an obese dog is such a problem? Dr. Ward broke it down.

The Two Main Problems with Overweight Dogs There are really two factors to keep in mind when you consider the issues associated with overweight and obese dogs, says Dr. Ward: health and money.

The first, health, should come as no surprise to those who are aware of all the health issues that overweight people have to deal with.

“It’s not only the fact that obese dogs face

of the life they’re leading in the first place,” says the doctor.

A few of the major health issues that obese dogs and cats have to deal with include osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, cancer and more. “The real heartbreaker for me as a vet, though, is that these pets have such a diminished quality of life,”Dr. Ward said. “I see the consequences, and I wish for those pets that I could roll back the tape to five years ago and say ‘let’s change a few minor things here and there and we could have avoided all of this.’ It’s

avoidable, not inevitable.”

Besides the health factors, Dr. Ward is also astounded by the amount of money that is spent when it comes to treating obese pets.

He estimates that obese animals are costing owners tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars in unnecessary medical bills each year. “From an economic perspective this is huge,” he said. In fact, according to Dr. Ward a lot of the vet care expenses associated with weight issues would go away if we would all start making smarter and better food choices for our pets. A Cajun named Jean Paul moved to Texas and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day.

The next day the farmer drove up and said, “Sorry, but I got some bad news.

The donkey died.”

“Well then, just give me my money back.”

“I can’t do that. I went and spent it already.”

“OK then, just unload the donkey.”

“What ya gonna do with em.”

“I’m gonna raffle him off.”

“Ya can’t raffle off a dead donkey!”

“Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anyone he’s dead.”

A month later the farmer met up with the Cajun and asked, “What happened with the dead donkey?”

“I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $2 apiece and made a profit of $898.”

“Didn’t anyone complain?”

“Just the guy who won. So I gave him his $2 back.”
