As a proud resident of Coquitlam for nearly 25 years, I’ve watched our city grow into this vibrant, diverse and beautiful landscape we call home.

This month – Hardy Annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t.

In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds.

Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now.

Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners.

For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet.

poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), love-in-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers.

If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded.

The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties.

A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant.

If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the

fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers.

My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it.

Next time you’re at the garden centre... walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year.

AT: I’ve lived in Port Moody since 2006 with my husband and mother in-law (who’s 84 years old). I love this “small town feel”, the people, the location, and the abundance of nature. I have a daughter and son who live independently, but they still come to visit. My family is from Latvia, Riga. I love my work very much! It’s my full-time hobby! Other interests include reading books, watching movies, but only true-life stories which touch your soul, and I enjoy listening to music.

AT: My previous work back home was at a small Lawyer’s office with 10-15 colleagues and a ton of shelves, papers and files. After doing that for over 13 years working at the same desk, it was time for a change. My body and mind needed to have more flexibility, variety and freedom.

LEVEL UP YOUR MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY GAME IN 2020!

With Winter coming to an end and the beautiful colors of spring around the corner, there’s no better time than now to practice some new photography techniques. There’s a quote from photographer Chase Jarvis that says, “The best camera is the one you have with you.”

Although technically smartphone cameras may not be as powerful as their DSLR or similar counterparts, they are the camera you have with you the majority of the time, and if you learn to use some of these techniques, you’ll be able to level up your mobile photography game and ensure you’re taking some amazing shots with your phones!

Frame your Images with a Grid Most smartphone cameras have the option to add a grid overlay to the photo app.

The rule of thirds is one of the basic photography principles to help you compose your shot. Most phone camera grids use two vertical and two horizontal lines creating four points where the lines cross. The points are known as points of interest. By placing your subject in any of these points, your photo composition will appear more balanced and interesting to those that view your picture. Try this out next time you’re taking photos!

Shoot Pictures Through Objects This is a fun technique to try as the objects can help frame your subject and offer a unique perspective to your photo. Next time you’re taking some street photography take a photo of someone as they pass through an open doorway. It will take some practice to get the timing down but the photo will result in the subject being

framed by the doorway. Another thing you can try is holding some twigs or leaves just outside the focus of your camera with one hand and take the photo with your other hand. The result will look like you are peering through some foliage to get the shot and add some nice textures to your photo.

Don’t Use Your Phone’s Zoom I know what you’re thinking. Why wouldn’t I use my phone’s 10x digital zoom? Anytime you use a digital zoom, the phone’s processor is digitally enhancing the image to make it appear closer. While this does allow a closer perspective to your subject, the resulting image is often more pixelated and not as clear as if you had not used the digital zoom.

If you need a more zoomed shot, try walking closer to your subject or play with different angles like shooting from a lower angle and shooting upwards to change the appearance of the distance.

Have Fun! The most important thing is to take your mobile photography to the next level is to just have fun! Mobile photography has the ability to capture moments and memories on the fly, at a moment’s notice. Be silly!

Shoot some fun pictures of whatever you’re doing. Take some candids of the company you’re with. Not only will your pictures look more natural than ones with forced poses, you’ll be capturing some fun memories and the stories that go along with them.

Purpose. This my WHY and is what gets me out of bed each morning. It comes in a variety of forms from creating lasting relations with my clients to delivering a great customer experience. It is being able to provide for my family and setting the example with my kids to follow through on their commitments and to pursue their dreams.

Planning, for me this is the key to trying to do it all. I believe the saying goes something like “what gets written down gets measured”.

With that in mind I spend a little time each weekend planning out my

week ahead. It usually begins with plugging in the kids’ activities, high priority meetings, lead generation and then booking in all other commitments around these times.

Of course, there are times when things get turned upside down.

When this happens, I have to be nimble, then adjust and pivot.

PLACE DES ARTS Founded in 1972, Place des Arts is a not-for-profit arts education centre with a mission to inspire the artist in everyone. Located in the historic Maillardville neighbourhood of Coquitlam, we offer quality instruction for all ages and skill levels in the visual, literary and performing arts.

We partnered with What’s On! Coquitlam to showcase our Creative Writing program. This is what two of our students, Aili Oshika and Madelyne Bowman, from Janice Liu’s class had to say about their experience at Place des Arts and their class.

D

uring 2019, we were lucky to get to attend Creative Writing classes at Place des Arts.

Each one lasted a term (10 classes).

We walked through Place des Arts. Its walls were always covered with paintings and had lots of display cases filled with all sorts of different types of art, like clay and weavings.

We went up the stairs, going past the wall that was always covered with drawings of different animals. Then we walked into the Creative Writing room. There were usually people there before us, writing, or drawing. The teacher, Janice, was waiting for us, usually reading her book.

Janice was very patient and enjoyed teaching us. The class was always clean and always had all the writing supplies available to us. Janice also gave us the option of typing on laptops to complete our assignments but made sure we didn’t go off task. She always found ways to explain to us, so every student always

understood the lesson. She gave us some time to complete each assignment, and we sometimes worked on it the next class if we didn’t get to finish it.

We went quietly to our seats, with our laptops, notebooks and pencils. Janice started explaining a story where we had to write a short story about ‘Dogtective Bruno’.

“He’s a dog detective,” she explained. “You each have to come up with three characters, the suspects, and one of them to be guilty for stealing a very important painting called ‘Bruno on Weekends’. The story part comes in when you place the clues to help Bruno solve the mystery of who stole it.”

After class, we walked back to our car, with our notebooks filled with stories and poems.

We did short stories, poems, metaphors, making our own mythical creatures, foil characters, non-fiction stories along with fiction stories, timelines, and odes to everyday objects. Overall, it was a great experience, and we recommend it to anyone who enjoys writing.

Hi, we're SHARE Society.

SHARE Family & Community Services Society started as a children’s clothing exchange in 1972 in the basement of founder Gertie Grosser’s home and quickly became a focal point for community members who wanted to help themselves and their neighbours with life’s challenges. Today SHARE is a non-profit, independent, community based organization providing leadership and programs in response to the social needs of the residents of the TriCities (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra), New Westminster and adjacent communities.

Our wonderful team of staff work hard to bring many different programs and services to the Tri-Cities, such as: -counselling, prevention and education for youth and adults -food for hungry families through our Food Bank -early intervention therapies for children with special needs -services to seniors to help them remain independent in their homes and stay connected to their community -support for newcomer and refugee families that helps them to integrate into their new community

A MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE Tips on Self-Care After a wet winter season, it’s nice to know that Spring is just around the corner. We can expect milder weather and the renewal of our trees, bringing colour back to our beautiful outdoors.

Young and old, it’s always a great idea for our physical and mental health to catch a breath of that fresh Spring air.

Daylight lasts longer which gives us plenty of opportunities to practice a little self-care.

What is self-care? I like to define selfcare as the healthy little things we need to do for ourselves to keep us from burning out. Let’s face it, life can be hectic and demanding, hence it’s incredibly vital that we learn to look after ourselves.

HERE’S SOME USEFUL TIPS THAT’S WORKED FOR ME ON PRACTICING SELF-CARE: Define what Self-Care means to you.

Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of laughter to help me manage things like stress, anxiety and depression.

Subconsciously we sometimes don’t allow ourselves to relax. There’s an inner voice that says we HAVE to finish our never-ending to-do list before we allow ourselves to have a little fun. We become overly critical of ourselves and tend to fall into the trap of “earning our

OVERNIGHT OATS INGREDIENTS

METHOD

Whole jumbo oats

1. Half to three-quarters fill a 1L Mason jar with oats, the chia seeds and flax seeds. Add water until the oats are just covered. Leave overnight.

2. When you are ready for breakfast, add your choice of fresh fruit and nut toppings, compote and almond butter, plus a little splash of coconut milk.
