BURNABY’S 33RD ANNUAL TERRY FOX RUN SET FOR SEPTEMBER 15 AT SWANGARD The 2019 Burnaby Terry Fox Run will be held on September 15th at Central Park to raise funds for cancer research. Swangard Stadium will be where runners register, start and finish the Run. Participants will either walk or run a 2, 5 or 10 km route through Central Park.

New Burnaby Run organizer, Mario Miceli is hoping to raise $50,000 and have 500

participants at this year’s event. “This ambitious goal will require the entire Burnaby business community and residents to open their hearts and support this Canadian

hero’s dream,” says Miceli.

“Just about everyone has been touched by cancer. This Run is a way to fight back against this disease by supporting ongoing research.”

This year’s event will be family friendly to encourage all generations to participate and also enjoy the entertainment and food in the stadium.

“Volunteers are needed,” says Miceli. “Service groups, employee teams and anyone who would like to participate or contribute can make a huge difference by supporting this event.”

Cranberry Bread and Butter Pudding Serves: 4 Preparation time: 20 minutes (plus resting time) Cooking Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients 1/4 cup / 1oz / 25g dried cranberries 1/3 cup / 100ml Cranberry juice 2 tsp sugar • 4 eggs 2 cups / 450ml / 16floz milk or milk alternative 2 cups / 450ml / 16floz single cream (you can use all milk if you prefer) 1/4 cup / 2oz / 50g sugar Grated rind of 1 orange 1/4 cup / 2oz / 50 g butter 1 loaf of bread (at least a day old, sliced into thick cubes) Soft brown sugar for sprinkling over

Method Poach the dried cranberries in the cranberry juice with 2 tsp sugar. Reduce the mixture down until it thickens and becomes a little jammy. Place it on one side to cool.

In a separate dish beat together the milk, cream (if using) and eggs, and then stir in the sugar and grated orange rind.

Butter the bread on both sides and place into a buttered dish, alternating layers of bread with layers of cranberry. Finish with a layer of bread then sprinkle a few cranberries over the top.

Pour the egg mixture over everything and let the pudding rest for at least 2 hours (or overnight in the fridge).

Preheat the oven to 350 F or 180C or gas mark 4. Sprinkle the finished pudding with soft brown sugar and place in the oven for 45 minutes.

This is lovely served with crème fraîche or custard.

PERSONAL TRAINER PERSONAL TRAINER BRINGS REMARKABLE REMARKABLE BRINGS BACKGROUND BACKGROUNDTO TO UNIQUE UNIQUE FITNESS EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE Moments after sitting down with Crystal Eckenswiller, owner of West Coast Personal Trainer, you immediately catch this woman’s enthusiasm for building fitness into people’s lives. Yet she remains rather modest about her own fitness background.

In fact, her experience is pretty amazing!

Raised in Ontario, Crystal played multiple sports growing up, including a few seasons on boys’ teams! She moved to Banff after high school and received training in personal fitness at a college in Calgary. She later returned to Ontario, which led to involvement with a couple of pretty well-known hockey teams … the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Canadian Women’s Olympic team!

Her experience with the Leafs consisted of off-season, dry land training for a couple years at the end of the Pat Quinn era. Her time with the Canadian Women’s Team involved helping with fitness training prior to the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Olympics, where coincidentally, Canada won gold all three times!

While she’s obviously worked with many top-level athletes, Crystal is passionate about fitness for everyone! She sees fitness as not about attaining a certain body type, but being fit in the body that you’re in!

She also believes that working out should be a fun experience.

“Why do you have to hate it for it to be fitness?” she asks. “It should make your life more enjoyable! I work out more so I can eat more,” she laughs.

Her West Coast Personal Trainer business takes that same passionate approach to fitness. Most of Crystal’s work with clients is in small “Boot Camps.” But the camps have no drill sergeant barking orders. “There’s no yelling,” she laughs. It’s just a bunch of people from all walks of life, all sizes and fitness levels, working toward a common goal and building supportive friendships.”

The “Boot Camps” are also unique in that they take place outdoors, in parks or on school playgrounds, and not only in Burnaby, but also Vancouver, New Westminster, Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford. “It’s a great way to enjoy nature and some beautiful views of the mountains,” she says. It’s so much better to have fresh air than what you get in a sweaty, stuffy gym!”

Crystal’s enthusiasm for fitness knows no bounds. While she’s excited to continue her current training sessions, she’s planning next to start offering Online Training for people who can’t make to the gym. It’s just another unique approach from this energetic owner of West Coast Personal Trainer!

By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world.

But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another.

To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.” In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours … in hopes of becoming friends.

Josephine also remembers the distasteful meals. “We’d line up with our tin plates for this gruel that they made. It was full of weevils, so all through breakfast we’d be picking out weevils and around the edge of the plate, there’d be all these little weevils. But that was our breakfast, and when you’re hungry you eat what you can.”

The story of Josephine Geary carries a certain melody. After all, this lovely woman, now in her 80’s, has had a life wrapped up in music. But the melody has definitely struck some minor chords!

After being freed from the camp when the war ended, Josephine and her family returned to a somewhat normal life. However, it didn’t last long, as civil war soon broke out. Over time, many families left China.

Eventually Josephine and her family left as well, and headed for a new life in Canada.

Born in Shanghai, China in 1935, Josephine grew up in the French area of the city. She had an enjoyable life, learning the piano and, together with her brother, attended the Shanghai British School. That was due to the family’s partial British ancestry.

The family settled here in Burnaby, and Josephine later graduated from Burnaby South High School. She wrote for the school newspaper, which led to a brief opportunity to write for the Vancouver Sun.

However, the British ancestry worked against them during World War 2 when Japanese forces invaded China. Since the British were part of the Allied forces, Josephine and her family were considered the enemy and were rounded up with thousands of others and put into internment camps.

“I remember the day in 1943 when the Japanese soldiers came into our apartment with bayonets drawn,” recalls Josephine. “They took everything, and we were given notice that we were to go into an internment camp on the outskirts of Shanghai, a camp called Lunghwa.”

Josephine and her family were imprisoned in the camp until the end of the war in 1945. There were pleasant times as prisoners organized entertainment and various activities for the children. However, there was also considerable fear due to the cruelty of some of the guards.

“Everyday we had to line up for roll call,” Josephine explained. “Guards would come with the bayonets and if anyone started yawning or nodding

She also renewed her piano lessons. “My father said, ‘I want you to find a piano teacher – the best.’ So we enquired and found out that Glen Geary was the best at that time.” Josephine went on to attain her ARCT. That musical education also brought about some romantic melody.

Josephine and Glen eventually started dating, and later were married and had two children. Glen was a professor of music at UBC and Josephine continued the musical journey, teaching piano in their home.

Throughout the years, Josephine has been very involved in the local arts community. She served for many years on the Board of the Canadian Society for Asian Arts, and also as a docent at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens.

In 2016, Glen passed away but the melodies they created over more than 60 years of marriage live on. Josephine continues her active life as a resident of Mulberry PARC Retirement Residence in South Burnaby, the very same part of Vancouver where her family first made their home in Canada almost 70 years ago.
