The Harrow Inn, has been re-invented to provide the very best in food, service and ambience without the pretence you might ordinarily find in some of the many “Gastropubs” that are springing up around the country. Indeed, the kind of offerings that you can find in many of these places are the inspiration behind chef/proprietor Paul Layton’s much anticipated return to “the stove” after hanging up his chef jacket and moving across to Japanese cuisine three years ago out of frustration.

For some time he has become increasingly annoyed by many establishments attempt at rustic British food – a good example of this is what passes for a “pie” – Paul gets annoyed when he finds a pie served in a small dish with a puff pastry lid.

This has inspired him to re-furbish the Harrow and bring back a lot of his old favourite recipes from the last two decades (where a pie WAS a pie), where good old fashioned cooking was all about the flavours and textures and not how many squiggles you could draw on a plate. He has also teamed up with Garry McGowan – an old colleague from back in 2001 when they were working together in Devon and Somerset in what would have been the first of the Gastropub phenomena in the country at that time.

This is due in the main to the success of food-related television shows and the knowledge this has imparted. This is why he has returned to good old

fashioned values, service and food of the highest quality. He considers that it is now time that when you read a menu, you will get what it says on the plate, it is also time that businesses started reinvesting in local businesses and supported each other through what can only be described as the most difficult financial period of this country’s history for a long time.

Indeed, Paul knows as much as anyone how difficult this period has been, he himself had a particularly difficult 2008 with all of his businesses struggling, he had to fold one of his companies due to the state of the economy. He found it increasingly hard to keep his head above water and fighting the fight to pay his suppliers and staff whilst simply ensuring that his businesses were at least able to open its doors on a daily basis. This period proved to be a steep learning curve for Paul as his background as a chef, did not necessarily give him the grounding for running multiple businesses through such a difficult time.

However, in recent times it has gone through many ownerships who have not only failed miserably to return it to its former “glory days” but also take the business to an all-time low. It is now Paul’s intention to buck the trend of 15 public house closures per week and bring back the Harrow to where it should firmly be; a fantastic local country pub where all your expectations are met ....... and more!

Moving forward, Paul realises that he has to fight the demons that come with liquidating a company and the inevitable fallout that this causes. He has now reverted to keeping it as simple as he can, by doing C.O.D with suppliers and rebuilding relationships with all of his trusted suppliers until faith has been restored. Most of his trusted suppliers such as Stuart Alexander from Finest Independent Greengrocers and Robie from Chapman’s Fisheries of Sevenoaks have continued to support Paul through this period as they are fully aware of what he is trying to achieve at the Harrow and know what he is capable of achieving.

This is why Paul has continued to source the most local of suppliers as possible so that he may not only provide support to other local businesses in the area, but also so that he is able to clearly showcase the quality and provenance of his food for all to see. For customers at the Harrow it will be very apparent as to the products that Paul has chosen to use and of course the provenance of each of them “Local sourcing is now more important than ever” he stated.

A very warm welcome to this first edition of ‘Lifestyles’, our in-house magazine designed to bring you a comprehensive selection of some of the finest properties available to purchase or rent within Virginia Water, Sunningdale, Ascot and surrounding areas.

It is hard to believe but Buckinghams opened on 1st September 1991 during a serious downturn in the economy and property market. Many people questioned the wisdom of doing so (not least ourselves!) wondering whether we were brave or just downright stupid and certainly it was a very difficult time to start a business.

However, with a mix of youthful enthusiasm, excellent local knowledge and contacts, the implementation of high quality sales literature (since copied by other estate agencies) and excellent customer service, which appealed to a great many of our new clients, we very quickly established ourselves as a major player within the local property market – in fact over the last 18 years we have gone from strength to strength, always seeking to improve and build upon the service we offer to our Clients.

In 2005, we welcomed on board new blood in the form of Alex Juddery who, now 36 and living in Sunninghill, was part of a highly successful sales team for a corporate estate agency in Sunningdale during arguably their most profitable years. Alex’s experience and drive has led to Buckinghams significantly increasing the number of transactions we handle in the Sunningdale and Ascot areas whilst at the same time maintaining our position as a high profile independent agency in the Virginia Water and Wentworth Estate marketplaces.

As many people know we have an excellent track record in the Rental market and now believe our Lettings Department, headed by Nicky Morris, to be both the largest and most respected in the local area, managing some 120 properties on a day to day basis. Our tenants include a large number of both American and European Corporations and we are often the first port of call for many of the excellent relocation companies seeking superior rental properties for their senior staff.

In January 2006 Nicky and I decided to take a ‘foray’ into the International property market, opening Buckinghams International and marketing small developments in mainland Spain, Tuscany, Phuket, Corfu and The Caribbean.

This was very new territory for us but we felt there were quite a few potential purchasers for overseas property locally who would like to buy a holiday home but had reservations about purchasing abroad from companies they didn’t know, even if those companies were based in the UK. Quite simply, our aim was to find like-minded estate agencies or developers in just a few select locations who shared the same ethos as ourselves and to market their properties to existing and new clients living within a few miles radius from our office. This would make it possible to purchase a property abroad from a trusted local company which had been trading for several years and, perhaps most importantly of all, had an office that was easy to visit to ask questions face to face prior to arranging a viewing trip or to solve issues that may arise during a transaction.

From the word go our strategy worked well and over the last three years we

have successfully completed deals on villas and apartments in Barbados, St. Vincent, Tuscany and Phuket, virtually all of these have been purchased by Clients living within five miles (and often just a few hundred yards!) of our office.

Now we all find ourselves in the middle of another ‘challenging’ market.

Undoubtedly the second half of 2008 and 2009 have seen a pronounced reduction in the number of UK transactions taking place. However, as we all know this is a very special area in which to live and work and as such is better ‘cushioned’ from the effects of the downturn than most other towns and villages anywhere in the country.

Our Lettings Department has enjoyed yet another record year and although down over the last twelve months our sales figures are still strong with property prices holding up well due to continuing demand. Indeed since the end of March this year we have witnessed a steady increase in the number of purchasers registering in all price ranges, many of whom are highly motivated and in a good position to buy quickly, so if you are contemplating a move this Autumn or perhaps next year please contact us on 01344 845050 for sound, friendly advice.
