Mad Men (2007-15)

7 Seasons, 92 episodes

RANKED AS ONE OF ALL-TIMETHE BEST TV SHOWS

Writer Matthew Weiner went from writing Becker to writing for HBO’s wildly successful mob hit The Sopranos but on the side he was working on a different kind of project: a drama set in the 1960s New York advertising world. Weiner’s tenure on The Sopranos gave him enough credibility to dust off Mad Men and pitch it again. In 2006, AMC bit. Seven seasons later, Mad Men has been widely hailed as one of the greatest dramas in television history, star Jon Hamm has become a household name, and AMC is a cable force. The series follows the professional lives and saucy after-hours exploits of the staff of a Madison Avenue advertising agency played out against a slick background of New York City circa 1960. MOST MISSED MAD MEN MOMENTS

While most people know that parts of Mad Men were based on the real Draper Daniels, a legendary creative director from Chicago’s Leo Burnett agency who invented the Marlboro Man. Few people have caught these fun moments the first time around watching the famed series.

1. The old cigarrette brand Lucky Strikes played a recurring role on the show, and the company doubled its sales during the show’s run. The Lucky Strikes pitch is featured in the pilot.

2. Roger Sterling (played by John Slattery) left his wife Mona, played by Talia Balsam. Slattery and Balsam are actually married in real life. Prior to marrying Slattery, however, Talia was married to George Clooney for five years. She was in 14 episodes including Season 7’s Episodes 4 and 7.

3. At the end of every episode is a song that reflects the events of the time or the subject of the episode. A few of our favorites were: Chubby Checker, “The Twist” in Sn 1, Eps. 8; AnnMargret, “Bye Bye Birdie” in Sn 3, Eps. 2; The Rolling Stones, “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction,” Sn 3, Eps. 13; The Beatles, Sn. 5, Eps. 8; and Joni Michell’s “Both Sides Now,” Sn. 6, Eps. 12. 1

Portlandia

(2011-18)

Seasons: 8

Episodes: 77 (22 minutes)

Your Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

From the twisted minds of Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live) and rock band Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein is this comedy series inspired by the duo’s cult web collaboration, thunderant.com. Viewers step into a whimsical, dream-like version of Portland, Oregon, full of absurd eccentricities that aren’t really there in real life. (Or are they?) Guest stars on the series were never lacking, the first season alone welcomed Kyle MacLachlan, Gus Van Sant, Sarah McLachlan and even the then current mayor of Portland, Sam Adams, among many others. Nobody could’ve predicted that Portlandia would become a cultural touchstone and help rejuvenate sketch comedy — least of all its creators. “It’s not that we’re without ambition,” Armisen said. “But when we started out, we were like, ‘Let’s make a show about things we like.’ That other people picked up on it is a shock.”

Kevin Can F**k Himself

(2021-22)

A nod to Kevin Can Wait, the Kevin James-led sitcom exemplifies the kind of wife the show is trying to subvert: longsuffering, genial, subservient.

TOP 5 Graham Norton

Kevin Can F**k Himself ’s lead woman is none of those things, trying to break out of this shell of a marriage that has held her captive for so long. The lead role of Allison is played by Annie Murphy, an Emmy winner for the beloved series Schitt’s Creek. “After Schitt’s Creek I was so worried that I was going to kind of get stuck in this blond loopy land. I really, really wanted to do something significantly different,” said Murphy. “This came along, which is like an absolute 180. I get to do things like kick over a garbage can angrily and fry an egg angrily. And, you know, do cocaine in an alleyway angrily. … Plus, the fact that it was created by a woman and it’s such a female-heavy cast and crew. I was begging to be signed up for it.”

Look familiar? It’s Annie Murphy from Schitt’s Creek!

Hap And Leonard

(2016-18)

Seasons: 3

Episodes: 18 (43 minutes)

Your Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Author Joe R. Lansdale’s noirish book series is brought to life in Hap and Leonard, a sometimes dark, sometimes funny, but thrillingly endearing story of two best friends in the late ’80s who set out to uncover a lost fortune. Hap Collins (James Purefoy) is a white ex-hippie with a huge heart. You seriously want to hug the guy. He struggles with his bad habit of falling in and out of love with the wrong woman, his biggest temptation being his ex-wife Trudy (Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks). His best friend, Leonard Pine (Michael Kenneth Williams), is a black, openly gay Vietnam vet with some anger management issues. While it’s questionable where Hap and Leonard’s next dollar may come from, their friendship is unwavering. Here Purefoy shares some of his thoughts on his character and the series.

• On just how relatable Hap and Leonard truly are … I really recognize these men. They’re men who, when I was growing up in the west country of England in a very industrial, agricultural community, the pub was full of men like Hap and Leonard, always on a get-rich-quick scheme of some kind. A scam, a pyramid selling scheme, a stolen good or something would come into their life. Anything that could just bump them out of the rut. Most TV shows or movies now, it’s about billions. They just want $100,000. It’s much more simple because that’s enough to get them out of the rut.

• On friends who are as thick as thieves … They’re those kind of buddies — and most men have got those kind of buddies in their life somewhere — people who they’ve known for 25, 30, 40 years that they just know they’re going to be there for them. Come rain, come shine, they’re not going to turn them over or @#$% them over.

• On that episode with Chub (Jeff Pope) being naked in the mud … He should have his own sitcom, like a big sitcom. I can easily see him doing something very, very funny for a long period of time because he’s a very funny man. Very bright, really sharp, dry as you like. It was just a fun day to see Jeff Pope butt-naked in a hole of slimy mud that he stayed in for hours. Nine hours he was in that @#$%ing hole. … He couldn’t come out and it was bugs and mosquitoes and he’s bare. Then people sort of forgot about him.

Yes! That’s Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks
