A Message from Mayor Carol McDonald The Chamber of Commerce is an integral part of our business community and I congratulate them on the release of their first Member Guide. I would also like to congratulate our local business owners and employees for all your continuous hard work. Our local business community is thriving in a wide range of diverse sectors, and I am delighted to see new businesses putting down roots in our town. I am proud of the work the Chamber has accomplished over the past few years in Portugal Cove St. Philip’s to support, enhance, and foster opportunities for our local businesses. From hosting events, to delivering promotional campaigns, to undertaking major projects for the future, the Chamber is always finding new ways to better our community. I look forward to working with the Chamber and neighbouring municipalities on the objectives outlined recently in the Chamber’s Killick Coast Agriculture Strategic Plan and I am excited to see what the future brings.

Graymens Beard

The story goes that the only man who renames nameless, found favor in her heart and they planned to marry in March 1823 The week before the lovers were to be married, Fanny contracted typhoid fever and died quite suddenly She was buried the morning of the day on which she should have gotten married As new did not travel quickly from St Johns at the time, her lover came riding bearing gifts for his beloved bride to be Upon reaching St phillips he was told that Fanny had died and instead of continuing on to Portugal Cove, he simply turned around and headed back to Brigus, taking to his bed and very quickly dying of a broken heart Fanny Goff Memorial Known by some as "Pretty Pheeny Goff", Fanny was reputedly a young woman of great beauty and character. When you saw her, your gaze became fixed on her countenance. It should come as no surprise then that Fanny had many suitors.

MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH

The work of Methodists in Portugal Cove was served primarily by itinerant preachers from the late 1700s until the early 1800s. With the help of locals and two St. Johns merchants, a church was built in 1810 and by 1820, was maintained by Methodists. Portugal Cove was one of many cities in the St. Johns circuit whereby a minister would travel between churches offering service. It wasn't until the late 1800s that an influx of Methodists, mining families to Bell Island allowed for a resident minister to serve both communities.

One of the most prominent physical features in the community of Portugal Cove is this trail/lookout

The large outcrop of rock hovers above Portugal Cove behind the United Church and some beleive its name comes from the image created in winter when water freezes down the face of the rock resembling a man with a beard Greyman's Beard offers an expansive veiw of Conception Bay and is easily accessable from the end of Princes Mountain Drive.

St Bartholomew's Cemetary

Many of the people buried here were children, fishermen, and families after a severe diphtheria outbreak among schools and fishing boats Graves are marked using various sizes of stones standing upwards and occasional gravestones

As the main gateway to Bell Island, Portugal Cove was directly influenced by whatever took place on the island or the waters in between. On the night of November 10, 1940, the only major catastrophe involving the bell island ferry service took place. Strong winds and snow flurries filled the air that night as the Garland , one of the privately owned motor boats used to ferry people to and from the island, set out from Portugal Cove at about 5:30pm Most of her passengers were miners returning to work after a weekend spent with families in the Cove

War Memorial

The War Memorial site in Portugal Cove was built in memory of those from the community that lost their lives during the first and second World Wars. The first monument was originally erected shortly after the end of World War One, through generous donations from the people of Portugal Cove. After World War Two, a second monument was built. On November 11th, 2000, a third monument was erected by the Town. The names of St. Phillips residents and those who had been left off the original monuments were added.

On the other side of the tickle, the Golden dawn, another privately owned ferry , was leaving Bell Island A third boat, the Maneco, left from Portugal Cove shortly after the Garland The skipper of the Golden dawn confused the lights of the Garland with those of the Maneco, and altered her course, crashing into the Garland head on and at full throttle The garland quickly began to sink and took only 5 minutes to dissapper under the rough sea, taking mst of her crew and passengers with her The only survivors from the Garland were the captain and three passengers Twenty five individuals perished that night, and nearly half were residents of Portugal Cove

The Tragedy in the Tickle

Considered the oldest graveyard in Portugal Cove, St Bartholomew’s Cemetery is situated next to the old Anglican Church Originally named St Peter’s Cemetery, when it closed for burial in 1896, a new St Peter’s Cemetery was established and the old one became known as St Bartholomew's

The Reverend was an avid collector of biological curiosities, and after identifying the “fish devil” to be a giant squid he estimated, based on the 19 foot tentacle, that the squid was approximately 72 feet long Since then there have been a total of 15 giant squid sightings off the coast of Newfoundland, and since this is such a high number it is said the waters of Newfoundland have the highest concentration of these giant underwater beasts in the world Little Tommy Pico & the "Devil Fish"

On october 26th, 1873 an extremely peculiar event happened in the community of portugal cove Three young fishermen were out on the sea when a “devil fish” is said to have attacked the skiff, threatening the lives of all men on board In all of the chaos 12 year old Tommy Pico saved the day by swiftly cutting off the creature's arms with a hatchet to free the boat from the monster's grip This makes Portugal Cove the site of the first authenticated human encounter with a giant squid The fishermen ended up feeding one of the tentacles to a local dog and brought the other ashore to Reverend Moses Harvey, who then measured the tentacle to be 19 feet in length
