he British Skin Foundation says 60% of people in the UK currently have or have previously had a skin condition, and that 70% of people with skin conditions or scars say it affects their confidence. I am one of those people. I have a chequered history of skin conditions, including eczema, acne, pigmentation, and contact dermatitis, which means I have to be careful what I put on my skin. In the summer months, I am even more conscious of the skincare I use, as no-one wants unsightly or painful rashes in the heat when more skin is usually on show. So here are my hero products, ready to come to the rescue: >> Avène knows the sun attacks the skin, particularly of those with a fair complexion. The company produces Avène IntenseProtect 50+ Sun Cream For Very Sensitive Skin –suitable for all the family, including babies from 6 months. It’s appropriate for use on injured skin and scars too and Avene says it’s been tested in the most intense conditions – at high altitude and in tropical weather, for example. It’s available at Boots stores in Canada Place and Jubilee Place at £20 for 150ml. >> Those who’d prefer a coloured moisturiser version, will need to shop online or visit Superdrug stores at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre or in Greenwich to find Avène Very High Protection Tinted Sun Cream 50+ at £18 for 50ml. The company, which also makes products specifically for those with acne, is very much an eco-friendly brand – a huge tick in my book – with a mission to make a positive contribution to environmental issues such as preserving and improving the health of the oceans.

adjective, real, from Latin

The specific blue-green colour of seawater. This term derives (and can also mean) things that are of the city of Venice in Italy. That includes, of course, the colour of the water in its famed canals and the sea that surrounds it.

>> Lastly, a secret potion I discovered in my 20s and continue to use to this day is rose hip oil. After experiencing bad acne, this stuff worked wonders to erase the scars that remained. There are many on the market, but a very affordable option comes from The Ordinary. Boots stocks The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil, £9 for 30ml. I haven’t used a bad product from The Ordinary yet – another favourite.

>> Many suffer with dry skin in summer and, when the sun has gone down, I find myself craving a good moisturiser to soothe and repair my skin. I have tested many brands, expensive and dirt cheap, and there is one I go back to time and time again. It’s a brand my mother used on me and my siblings as kids and one I use on myself and my daughter – Oilatum. The company’s website claims it has been trusted for 50 years to relieve dry and eczema-prone skin. I use its Oilatum Cream all over my body including my face at £7.49 for a big 500ml pump bottle at Superdrug. It’s the best thing for relieving sore, itchy patches and is best applied straight after washing to seal moisture in. I regularly use the Oilatum Junior Bath Additive when bathing my toddler, £8.99 for 300ml from Boots. Using this alongside the cream alleviates any eczema and irritation she has from time to time. It’s fragrance free and suitable from birth.
