IwasreallyprivilegedtotakepartinavisittoRosemaryAlexander’s gardeninSeptemberRosemary,thefounderofTheEnglishGardening School,isrenownasoneofourmostinfluentialdesignersandshehas createdastunninggardeninatrulybeautifulsetting!Thesevisitsarea realopportunitytogetbehindthescenesandunderstandagarden, andtheircreatorandtomymind,oneofthegreatbenefitsofbeinga memberoftheWFGA.

Wewerewelcomedwithcoffeeandcakeby RosemaryandTina,herHeadGardener.Itwas fabuloustohearfromRosemaryallaboutherlife inhorticultureandhowshecametoliveand makeagardenatSandhill

Rosemarytrainedasalandscapearchitectand hadherownprivatepracticebeforefoundingthe EnglishGardeningSchoolover40yearsago.Her gardendesigncourseshaveruneveryyearsince then,teachingandsupportingamultitudeof gardenersmanyofwhomarebeginners. Rosemaryhastaughtallovertheworld,written severalbooksandjudgedatcountlessRHSand internationalshowsShecontinuestoteachand inspireinLondonAsshesays,“Lifeiscontinually learning”

RosemaryhaslivedatSandhillfor26yearsand hasasmallgardeningteamheadedupbyTina Woodward,whostartedasaWRAGStraineethere around10yearsago.Tinaisnowextremely knowledgeableand,whilstwewalkedaroundthe

gardens,toldusaboutmanyoftheplantsin thegardenandhowtheyarelookedafter. Tinaspokeabouttheformalstructureofthe gardenandkeepingitsharp–theboxballs,the cloudpruning,thebeechesthatlinethe driveway–aperfectbackdroptothesofter plantingaroundthegarden.

Thefrontofthehousehasboxballsplanted inalinetomarktheedgesofawidepath.The boxlookshealthy,andTinatoldushowto treatit,biologically,nochemicals,butlotsof airaroundthebaseoftheplantstoallow airflowSilverbirchaddheightasdothemany treesandlargershrubs.Thesoilisalkalineand plantedtosuit.Bedsareoftenedgedwith AlchemillaorLondonPride.

Focalpointsareimportantinthegardenand drawtheattentiontomanydifferentand interestingfeatures.Attherearofthegarden areroses,herbaceousplantsandavegetable garden.Thebackdropisthesoftcountryside

oftrees,pastureandhills.Aswelingeredto chatwithTinaandRosemary,thesky darkened,afewraindropsfellandweheard aclapofthunder!Weheadedbacktothe houseformorecoffeeandtea.Theperfect finishtoourdelightfulmorningvisit.

ThegardenatSandhillFarmHouseisopen, fortheNGS,onSundayFebruary10th2025 from12-4pmforafabulousdisplayof snowdrops.Doaddtoyourdiary,asI’msure itwillbewellworthavisit.

OnadayinSeptemberwhenmostofthe restofScotlandwasbathedinclearblue skiesandsunshine,agroupwentto MegginchCastle,shroudedinmist,tomeet CatherineDrummond-Herdman,theowner, foratourofthegardens.Thegroup consistedofpreviousWRAGStrainees,new sign-ups,andfriendsandfamilymembers

ThetourofMegginchstartedwithabrief historyofthecastlewhichhasbeeninthe samefamilysincethe1600s.Thegroupthen movedintothelargewalledgardenareawith Catherine,accompaniedbyhertwodogs. Hereweweretoldaboutandshownthetea plantsthataregrownatMegginch.

In1795CaptainRobertDrummondbrought backoneCamelliabushonhisEastIndian Clipperandthesamebushstillgrowsinthe garden.ThiswasCatherine’sinspirationtotry teagrowingbutithasprovedacontinualand challenginglearningprocess.Initialsoil samplessuggestedthesoilwasnotsuitable forteagrowing.Catherineexplainedthather plantsincludedifferentvarieties,allgrown fromseed,butthattheseedsarevery difficulttoobtain.Variousmaterialsfor mulchingthesoilandprotectingtheplants overwinterhavebeentried,withComfrey andlayersofsheepfleecesfoundtobethe bestsofarNowtheplantsseemtobe thriving.

Catherinetoldthegroupthat,fortea production,thebesttypeofleavesthatare pluckedfromtheplantaretwoyoungleaves withabud.Shefoundagoodexampleto showthegroup.Therearehowevernot

enoughplantsatMegginchforactualtea productiononsite,asaverylargenumberof leavesareneededtoproduceasmall amountoftea.SoMegginchispartofa groupofladieswhoallgrowtea,calledthe TeaGardensofScotland.Theysendtheirtea awaytobeprocessedandlaunchedtheir “NineLadiesDancing”teain2021,landingan orderwithFortum&Masons

Afterthewalledgarden,thetourmovedout intothevastorchard.Therearehundredsof differentapple,pear,plumandnuttrees withintheorchardarea.Someofthetrees arepartofMegginch’stwoNational Collections.Thefruitfromtheciderapple treesisnotusedandisgenerallyleftforthe wildlife,butthepearsarebeingusedtotryto makeperry.

managementisaconstantconsideration Variousapproacheshavebeentried includingusingaflockofsheep.Thesheep optionwouldnotberepeatedhowever,as, insteadofeatingjustthegrass,theyateall thelowerbranchesofthefruittrees.

Thetourconcludedwithawalkbacktothe housefordeliciousteaandcakeanda chancetonetworkwitheachother.Everyone foundthetourofMegginchCastlevery interesting.Catherine’spassiontowardsall theareasofthelargegardenwasinspiring.

ThoseofyouwhofollowusonInstagram mayhavenoticedaseriesofreelssharing storiesaboutsomeofourwonderfulWRAGS (WorkandRetrainasAGardenerScheme) traineeswhoareluckyenoughtobe undertakingtheirtraininginoneofeight Horatio’sGardens.Weareincrediblyproud ofthecollaborationbetweenWFGAand Horatio’sGardenandthrilledthatour traineesaregaininghands-onexperiencein therapeuticgardening,whilealso contributingtotherehabilitationandwellbeingofpatientswithspinalinjury.

Horatio’sGardennurturesthewellbeingof peopleafterspinalinjuryinbeautiful,vibrant sanctuarieswithintheheartofNHSspinal injurycentres.Leadingdesignerscreatethe accessiblegardenswherethecharity’steam careforpeopleandplantsalike.Thegardens arevitalplacesforreflectionandadjustment forpeoplefacinglife-changinginjuriesand longstaysinhospitalandourtraineeswork aspartoftheteamtonotonlykeepthe gardenslookingbeautiful,buttoalsouplift andnurturethepatients

Whetheritbemeetingsthatnolongerrequire expensivetravelfromfarflungareas,remote learningforRHSqualificationsorthegrowing numberofonlinetalksthatsprunguptobridge thegapofactualgardenvisitsortalks–they becameanessentiallifeline,andmanyhave survivedandevengrownsincethepandemic hasthankfullysubsided.

Beforebeingfurloughedfrommyroleofhead ofgardentrainingattheNationalTrust,Iwas askedtocreategardenadvicevideosforNT memberstokeepthemonboardwhilethe gardenswereclosedandpeoplewerespending moretimeintheirowngardens(iftheywere luckyenoughtohaveone)TheNationalGarden Schemecreatedaseriesofgarden“visits”in 2020tofillthegapinopendays,asawayof bridgingthefundingshortfallforthecharity. Thankfullythosearenolongernecessary, althoughsadlyinmycasetheyneverseemto disappearfromYoutube!

Whathassurvivedisthegrowingnumberof onlinetalksthatbeganassubstitutesforfaceto-facelectures,butinourfar-flungcommunity ofbusygardenerswesoonrealisedtheyserved averyusefulpurposeWFGAofcourse continuestodeliversomeofitstrainingonline, makingitaccessibletoafargreateraudience.

SallyKinghadbeenworkingpreviouslyinthe HerbariumattheBotanics(RBGE),which housesapproximatelythreemillionspecimens, collectedover350yearsandrepresentinghalf totwothirdsoftheworld’sflora.This important,leadingbotanicalcollectionis activelyusedtosupportresearchatRBGEand otherinstitutesaroundtheworldandloansout thousandsofspecimensandisvisitedby around200scientistseachyear.Thereare80 historicallysignificantspecimenscollectedby CharlesDarwinonhisvoyageroundSouth AmericaonHMSBeagleinthe1830’s!

Inthespringof2023,Sallysigneduptodoa WRAGStrainingandwasverykeentoachieve thisatRBGEwhilstdownsizingherHerbarium job.Afterafewmonthsofnegotiation,she managedtomakethistransitionandstarted herWRAGStraininginOctober2023Training atabotanicalgardenisofcourseawholly uniqueexperienceandtheBotanicsin Edinburghisaworldleaderinbotanicalscience

andaninternationalcentreofeducation.It employsawiderangeofleadingscientists, horticulturalists,ecologists,taxonomists, botanists,researchersetc.

Sallywasprivilegedtobeabletodipintothe worldofmanyofthesedepartmentsduringher year.Shedidofcoursealsolearnthepractical skillsrequiredbytheWFGAunderthekeeneyes ofRobynandSarahShefoundthatthese practicalskillsstronglycomplementedher theorybasedRHSLevel2inHorticultural Principles.

Onebighighlightwasafieldtriptoplantout threatenedconifersonanex-situconservation siteaspartoftheinternationalconifer conservationprogramme.I'vetakenpartinplant identificationwalkaroundsandassessments withHNDstudents,andattendedsomeofthe certificateinpracticalhorticulturesessionsas partofmyprofessionaldevelopmenttraining.I amincrediblygratefultohavehadthis experience,it'sbeenabsolutelyamazing.It enabledmetosecuremyKitchenGarden HorticulturalAssistantpost,whereI'vetaken chargeofdevelopinganewareaofthekitchen garden.IlookforwardtoMondaysattheend theweekend,doingaWRAGSplacementhas beenlife-changing”.

Sallyhasbeenanexemplartraineeandhas madeapointofattending90%oftheWFGA coursesavailableoverthepastyear,from cuttingsandherbaceousdivisionatJupiter Artland,towinterandsummerpruningatFloors CastleandMertounGardensintheBorders ShealsocametotheSeilichWildflowerDayheld byDrSallyGouldstoneinJune.Sallyfinishesher trainingnextmonthandwillcontinuewithher KitchenGardenHorticulturalpostatRBGE.

Iamcurrentlyunsurewherehertrainingwill takeher,buttheyearatRBGEwillhavemeant sheishugelyemployableinwhateverroleshe chooses.IamhopefulthatasaresultofSally’s yearasaWRAGStrainee,theRBGEwillconsider becominga‘traininggarden’fortheWFGAand thatmanymorepeoplewillenjoythelifechangingexperiencehadbySallyKing.

Duetoongoingrisingcostpressures,our membershipsubscriptionratesandtheWRAGS traineefeewillbeincreasingon1stJanuary 2025.

g importanceofasitesurveydrawing-anessentialrequirementfordesigners

Whenstartingoutdesigningyourgarden,one ofthefirstandmostimportanttasksisto analysetheexistinggardenandtakean accuratesitesurvey.Professionalgarden designersoftenenlisttheexpertiseofqualified surveyors,butitisquitepossibletoconducta simplesurveyyourself.Youwillneedasurveying tape(ideallytwo),atentpegorahelpful assistanttoholdtheendofyourtape,clipboard, paper,pencils,pens,magneticcompassanda camera.

Startbydrawinganoutlineofthehouseand gardenaslargeaspossibleontoyourpaper,use apencilanddon’tworryaboutitbeingtoscale atthisstage.Ifyouneedtoshowdetailsofany trickyareas,thendrawtheseonaseparate page.Themainpremiseistocaptureasmuch informationasclearlyasyoucanwhilstonsite, soyoucantransferthesedetailsaccurately whenyouarebackatyourdeskThesketchof thehouseshouldincludethepositionofall windowsanddoors(andtheirdirectionof opening)andanyfeaturessuchasdrains, downpipes,manholes,etc.Noteanysheds, greenhouses,thepositionsoftrees,shrubsand hedges.Useyourcompasstoestablishthe Northdirectionandnotethisonyourplanwith anarrow.

Onceyouhavesketchedoutthegarden,you canthentakemeasurementswithyourtapeand recordthemneatlyontoyoursketchasyou workalong.Thebestplacetostartiswiththe house,asitisusuallyfairlystraightandgives youagoodbaselinetoworkfrom.

Formeasuringthehouseyouwouldnormally use‘runningdimensions’,whereyouattachthe endofyourmeasuringtapetoastartingpoint (forexamplethecornerofthehouse)andletthe

tapeoutalongthelengthofthehouse,reading offthepositionsofwindows,doors,drainsetc, asyoumovealongthetape-

Howeveryoutakeyourmeasurements,besure torecordtheminaclearconcisewaysothat youcanreadthemlater-thelastthingyouneed isaconfusedmuddle!Tohelpwiththis,I recommendusingpensindifferentcolours, whichcanhelpdifferentiate,forexample, runningdimensions(inblue)fromtriangulation measurements(inred)andmakesyournotes mucheasiertoreadIalsomeasureeverything inmillimetres,youmayprefertousemetresor evenuseimperial,butbesuretobeconsistent andsticktoonechoiceofmeasurementforthe wholesurvey.Useyourphoneorcamerato recordasmuchaspossible-thehouse,the boundaries,neighbouringbuildings,paving patterns,trees,hedges,anyawkwardcornersof thegarden-photosareinvaluableasreminders!

Oncebackatyourdesk,youneedtoconsider whichscaletodrawto-itshouldbeascalethat willrepresenttheplanclearlyandalsofitonthe paperthatyouhavechosen.Usingascalerule makesdrawingupyourplanaloteasier,asit calculatestheconversionforyou.Oneofthe easiestmetricscalesis1:100,whichmeans1cm onpaperisequalto1m(100cm)ontheground.

Alternativelyforsmallergardensyoucouldusea scaleof1:50(every1cmonpaperis50cmonthe ground).Youcanuseadrawingboardoryour tabletodrawyoursurveyon-usethelargest paperyoucanmanage,A2isagoodsizebutA3 willbeperfectlyadequateforsmallergardens.

Startbyplottingthehousefirstontoyour paper,usingyourscaleruletoconvertthe measurements,thenworkoutwardstothe boundaryofthegarden.Foranytriangulated points,useyourcompassestocreateanarc fromeachofthetwobaselinepointsandwhere thearcscross,willbethepositionofyourobject. Indicatetreesandshrubswithcirclesorwavy formstoshowtheirpositionandspread,and writeheightsalongfencesandwalls.

Whenyouhavefinishedyourdrawing, remembertoindicatethenorthpointwithan arrowandmakeanoteofthescaleused.Be suretotakephotocopiesandkeepyouroriginal drawingsomewheresafe,tosaveyouneeding todrawitagain!

REGIONALMANAGERVACANCIES

TheWFGAarelookingtorecruitaRegionalManagertodevelopandsupportourWork& RetrainasaGardenerScheme(WRAGS).Wearelookingtoappointanenthusiastic,selfmotivatedindividualtoactasaregionalpresencefortheWFGA.

WecurrentlyhaveavacancyfortheregionofCentralSouth(Oxfordshireand Buckinghamshire).ApplicantsneedtolivewithintheareatoenabletheSchemetorun smoothly,withafocusonwideningthenumberofplacementgardens,workingwith membersandtrainees,aswellascreatingworkshopsandskillsdayswithingardens.

TheRegionalManagerpositionrequiresmarketing,organisational&peopleskillsaswellas agoodknowledgeofhorticulturewithITliteracy.Therolehasitschallenges&rewardsbut offerstheopportunitytooperateonaflexiblelevelwithotheraspectsofemploymentand life,whilstnetworkingwithsomeexcellentgardenownersandexperiencedheadgardeners.
