O Decreto n. 19.008-A/49, de 14 de dezembro de 1949, regulamentou e organizou a Polícia Florestal do Estado de São Paulo, atividade pioneira na América do Sul, cujo primeiro comandante foi o 1º Tenente da Força Pública Odilon Spínola Neto. Originalmente, a Polícia Florestal foi incumbida dos serviços de fiscalização e guarda das florestas existentes em todo o território bandeirante, das reservas florestais oficiais e, ainda, do dever de cumprir e fazer cumprir as determinações legais no tocante à defesa das matas, ao reflorestamento, à caça e à pesca.
Inicialmente foram destacados 28 policiais da Força Pública com a missão de proteger o patrimônio florestal do Estado. O efetivo foi aumentando ano a ano e, em 1963, já estava fixado em 552 policiais.
Com a evolução e a importância que as questões de meio ambiente ganharam na sociedade nas últimas décadas, a Polícia Militar, dada sua eficiência e eficácia, adquiriu e ampliou suas missões e atribuições nesse cenário. Por isso, no ano de 2001, houve a necessidade de adequação do nome da sua unidade especializada que passou a se chamar Policiamento Ambiental da Polícia Militar do Estado de São Paulo.
FORESTRY POLICE CORPS The Decree n. 19.008-A/49, from December 14th 1949, organized and regulated the Forestry Police Force of the State of São Paulo, a pioneering force throughout South America. Its first commander was the Public Force 1st Lte. Odilon Spínola Neto. Originally the Forestry Police was tasked to oversee and guard the existing woods areas in São Paulo’s territory as well as the official forest reservations. Its mission also involved enforcing all legal stipulations referring to forests’ defense, reforestation zones, hunting and fishing. In the beginning the Corps integrated 28 police officers from the Public Force. Their mission was to protect the State of São Paulo forest heritage. The number of members kept growing and, in 1963, they formed a group of 552 police officers. Given the increasing scale and importance of environment issues for society in the few last decades, the Military Police, given its own efficiency and effectiveness, acquired and enlarged its missions and tasks concerning the environment. Thus, in 2001, the need to adjust the name of its specialized unit came to the fore and it is now known as the Environment Police Corps of the Military Police of the State of São Paulo.

Nautical Police Patrol – The need to oversee sea fishers’ activities and to protect the water resources made the Environment Police Patrol a pioneering operation as regards its technical design for a Nautical Police Patrol. This kind of preventive and inspection police work avails itself of various kinds of boats to patrol rivers, lakes, dams as well the sea shoreline along the State of São Paulo.

Green Canopy – In 1990, the State of São Paulo index of green coverage by forests was merely 4.16%. Since then there has been a steady increase in the vegetation spread so that in 2010 the index reached 17.3%. The Environment Police Corps’ work aims at the full protection of such areas, ensuring its constant growth. To that effect, it fosters the population’s participation to put into practice a sensible use of its resources, focusing their preservation.
