Seeking or Selling Homes: part of the Tjeltveit duo. CENTURY 21® REALTOR® in Assiniboia served by mother daughter duo of Dionne Tjeltveit and Cassie McCann.

Dionne Tjeltveit has been a part of real estate in Assiniboia and area for over 20 years. She switched to the CENTURY 21® franchise in 2008. Her daughter, Cassie, came on board over five years ago.

“It is always great to see people find the house of their dreams. We had several first-time home buyers be able to purchase their first home,” acknowledges Tjeltveit.

The rise in interest rates have presented challenges for the real estate industry, as it comes into play when a client is qualifying for a mortgage as it can significantly reduce the price that can be afforded. However, the Assiniboia realtor also adds it is nice to see mortgage rates dropping.

This real estate business is a full-service provider. They specialise in buying and selling residential homes, acreages, farms and commercial property. CENTURY 21® also offers free Market evaluations for those wanting to know what their property is worth, as well, they can also assist in recommending inspectors, mortgage specialists and help finding a lawyer.

Something people may not know about this real estate business? - “We can assist you in buying any property. It does not have to be listed with us. We handle all MLS (Multiple Listing) properties but can also assist with For Sale by Owner properties or even contacting people who do not have their homes listed. We can sell any property in Saskatchewan,” affirms Tjeltveit.

“We are a strong supporter of the community. We sponsor lots of sporting teams, dance teams, give out raffle prizes to groups and we volunteer a lot of

our time for local events. We also sponsor teams and events in the surrounding communities,” states the CENTURY 21

Tjeltveit affirms that one of the keys to their business success story is they are local, and they care about the community.

“We have strong negotiating skills that go a long way in making deals happen. We live here and we want to make the area strong for generations to come.”

You can find Dionne and CENTURY 21 and listings on https://dionne-tjeltveit.c21.ca/ and Cassie at https://cassie.mccannc21.ca/ well as their social media page. Search realtor.ca for a list of all properties in the area.

Tjeltveit responded to the Assiniboia Times on what is one of the biggest assets of doing business in Assiniboia, “We know the community. We know the properties. We know the history of the surrounding community and can help make your best decisions based on local input, not just selling pressure. Buying and selling properties are some of the biggest decisions you will make in your lifetime, so you should choose someone that is knowledgeable to

make the best decisions. We live in this community and spend our money in this community. We are always giving back to make it a better place for everyone.”

Dionne and Cassie can help from residential to commercial, farms, acreages and even leases, these women look after real estate wants and needs for Assiniboia and area.

CENTURY 21® is the most recognized name in real estate today. Dionne believes her clients feel real trust in the brand because of its longevity and professionalism. An added bonus, this real estate duo can refer them to another CENTURY 21® branch anywhere in Canada.

Tjeltveit has been recognized with a sales award in every year of her career with CENTURY 21®

Flexibility in hours is one of the strengths as often those looking for homes are searching on weekends and holidays due to their busy work schedules and home lives.

“Getting a referral is the best thank you that you can receive as it means that clients have appreciated our service so much that they will tell someone else.”

Young’s Equipment

• Our Vision: Leading the way in a thriving agricultural community.

• Our Mission: To help Saskatchewan agri-businesses feed the world, by maximizing accuracy, quality, yield, and up-time, through the provision of exceptional service and outstanding products.

• Founded: November 1st, 1988 • Founding partners: Lloyd Young, Tim Young, Bill Young, Ron Young • Major line: Case IH

• Short lines: over 25 separate lines • Current employee base: over 250

• Parts inventory: over $22 million. Access to the entire inventory is available through any of the 9 locations in Saskatchewan, including Assiniboia.

Young’s Equipment is Saskatchewan’s largest Case IH Agriculture dealership. It offers an incredible selection of farm machinery, agricultural implements, task-specific equipment and virtually everything else that today’s modern farm requires.

Young’s Equipment carries many of the top farm equipment lines in North America, featuring Case IH tractors, combines and sprayers as well as many short lines, such as Vaderstad, MacDon, Highline and Parker, just to name a few. If you need a particular piece of equipment for your farm operations, you’ll find it at Young’s Equipment.

Whether it is more horsepower to get you going in the spring, or a bigger combine to help you finish earlier in the fall, Young’s Equipment in Assiniboia is committed to getting you into the right piece of equipment at the right price.

To ensure that your parts get to you when you need them, the company runs two delivery vehicles from its headquarters in Regina to the company’s other locations. During peak seasons, such as seeding and harvest, the delivery service runs seven days a week. Product demonstrations have been the cornerstone of the Young’s business model from the very beginning. As part of great service, our product specialist will actually bring equipment to the field for a side-by-side comparison. Once a customer has made the decision to purchase a piece of equipment the product specialist will accompany the delivery for an operating demonstration.

The Assiniboia location opened in 2003. A new 16,000 square foot shop and 2,000 square foot

office and storage space was added in 2014. At Young’s Equipment, it’s really about having great staff. That’s why employee recognition and a commitment to training is how the company walks the talk. Clients walk into the front door to a welcoming atmosphere, a clean professional showroom and helpful staff. In Assiniboia, the branch is managed by Doug Graham, Mike Lingelbach is the service manager, Chad Rogers is the parts manager, and Raymond Martin as well as Brian Wegner handle the sales. The location has a staff of 26.

Young’s Equipment is truly committed to being your partner in agriculture. We believe that the only way we can be successful is by ensuring our customers are successful.

FROSTY FOODS

I’m Shai Corman and since coming from a background of restaurant business after working with my mom from 2017, I opened my business, Frosty Foods, in 2021. I redesigned the enterprise as take out only with indoor freezers and coolers for prepared meal shopping.

Conveniently located on 1st Avenue East along Highway 13 the store is popular with the elderly and busy moms who like the option of microwaveable meals. The other option of frozen meals make busy nights easy by popping supper in the oven.

The menu selections at Frosty Foods include burgers, fries and shakes, at the same time offering friendly options like chicken wraps, salads and smoothies. Burgers, fries and milkshakes may be the flagship availability, but Frosty’s carries a wide selection of food choices suitable for lunches. The latest offering is fried chicken ~ the chicken is tender and light, the coating is crispy. The fish and chips serve up delectable battered cod filets with fries and coleslaw as a side. All meals come with a choice of two types of fries, skins, salad or soup.

I emphasize that all my meals are home-cooked. I prefer to serve fresh foods daily made on-site. This allows my staff and I to get creative and offer Buffalo Quesadilla or

chipotle beef burgers as well as fresh soup and daily pizza by the slice.

If you are looking for a snack, Frosty’s features a number of side dishes like two types of fries, onion rings, poutine, mozza sticks and more.

Healthy is also on the menu at Frosty’s. For those on restricted diets or just craving some crunchy greens, we provide fresh salad bowls, different types of salads, wraps and sandwiches. There is also “to go” food like take out soups.

The desserts deserve special mention. They feature a variety of homemade pies, 6~inch and 9~inch decorated ice cream cakes, muffins, cinnamon buns, and other baking. These are individually wrapped for easy take out.

The full ice cream bar has become popular in the summer with ice cream desserts for take out or enjoyed at the picnic table. Customers can enjoy milkshakes, floats and malts in assorted flavours, or other options like cones and twisters.

Beverage choices include canned pop, bottled pop and floats. Coffee and milk as well as smoothies round out the menu.

Have a Birthday or Celebration? Think of us for your next cake! We offer small and large round cakes, slab cakes and cupcakes. Call to custom order or come in and pick one out of the cooler!

Rotary Club of Assiniboia

Assiniboia’s Rotary Club is part of an international organization that puts a large part of our efforts into the lives of youth. While our focus on the lives of youth in Assiniboia benefits the community, our focus on the lives of youth internationally benefits families and the community directly through the ripple effect where doing good in one area has far reaching positive effects.

The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Joanne

To this end, on an international level, the Rotary Club aids the Ripple Effect Project through funding to build schools in Guatemala. Along with building schools, bathrooms with doors were provided which increased attendance. Scholarships were set up that students could apply for to become teachers. Some of the students who became teachers have come back to teach in their home area.

In terms of education, a project referred to as the Water Hippo allows parents to gather water on their own freeing up their children to attend school regularly. Where once whole families had to work together to gather water in small vessels, now one person can haul water in an easy to maneuver much larger vessel.

Closer to home a local student undertook a project to clean up the community. With assistance from a rotary member this student created a project dividing volunteers into smaller groups and assigning areas to each group so the town could be cleaned up in an afternoon.

A new, currently temporary, fundraiser for the club has been the introduction of an escape room in a space donated by Taylor’s Auto proprietor. Another fundraising endeavor is the Trivia NIght that runs every second Wednesday of the month at Nash’s Restaurant. The money from this fundraiser is donated to many different projects depending on need. One of many very deserving recipients was the Limerick Daycare in Limerick as well as Gold South Child Care in Assiniboia.. The Rotary Club welcomes new members. The guys began working out of the old Petro Canada service station before purchasing the current location, that was opened in 1994.

Integra Tire prides itself on providing employment for 21 people in the community.

“Highlights of the last year include celebrating our 30 years in business, and being able to give back to the community by way of a fundraising barbecue at that event,” affirms Karst.

In fact, giving back in general is a theme of this community business as they sponsor events throughout the year as well as providing donations for prizes for a number of events and activities.

The team at Integra Tire aims to minimize downtime for their farming friends during seeding and harvest.

Challenges come with business operation for anyone and Shirley Karst notes that staffing is often a challenge for them.

“We strive to be fully staffed but that isn’t always the case. We have three farm service trucks that ideally, we would have staffed 100% of the time, but that isn’t always feasible. Because we have physically demanding jobs it takes a special person to not only be able to work, but to want to work. The tire truck especially is a heavy job and is often working under less-than-ideal conditions. There were many times during this past seeding and harvest that Tracy, his son Kyle, Darrin and his son Dylan were out on the truck. We don’t want to see our farming friends down any longer than need be,” says Shirley Karst.

Knowing that tires are an expensive investment, they do what they can to minimize price increases. However, like everything else, the prices on their products have had to increase.

“It’s hard explaining to the customer that purchased the same tire a year previous that they now must pay $100 more, for instance, and manufacturers have done nothing to improve the product, it’s just the cost of manufacturing and shipping. We always strive to keep prices down, but many factors as of late have been beyond our control,” states Shirley Karst.

Challenges can also come by way of parts and shipping, sometimes, the parts needed are not readily available, meaning a longer turn around on customer’s vehicles. At Integra Tire, most of their parts come from within the community, however, there are times when they have been forced to order straight from the dealer.

“In addition to tires of all sizes from passenger to Ag, we have ag wheels, custom wheels and tracks, we also offer a full line of both automotive and heavy-duty mechanics. We do mechanical SGI safety inspections for automotive and heavy-duty vehicles which includes semi’s as well as trailers,” adds the team at Integra Tire.

What is one thing about this business that people may not know? Shirley Karst responds, “We are proud to say our staff is very diverse, with each person bringing their unique skill set to work each day. Our staff represent four different countries including Canada and speak a total of four different languages including English.”

As far as community engagement we believe that giving back is one of the most important things a business can do. Integra Tire is a proud supporter of the new arena, and has been since the fundraising for the project began many years ago. This community business is also happy to say that they also support events happening in neighboring towns in the area.

Integra Tire donates both coffee and environmentally friendly plastic cups each year to many organizations. Their support of the annual Festival of Trees has been happening since the event began, 25 years ago. Not only do they purchase a corporate table, they typically purchase items at the live or silent auction, knowing funds are going to worthwhile community causes.

Integra Tire looks forward to being a Platinum sponsor for the upcoming 2025 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, taking place in Nov. 2025 at the Assiniboia Curling Club.

What is the key to your business success story? “Customer service, hard work and great staff is the key to success for us. We treat our customers the way we would like to be treated. We provide quality service, in a friendly, courteous and timely manner.”

While Integra Tire does have a website and a Facebook page, they find, for the most part, their customers still like the traditional way of dealing with them as Shirley Karst affirms the bulk of their customer engagement comes from the phone. Although texting has become a more frequent manner of communication and they still welcome walk in traffic on a regular basis.

Asked what they might consider one of the biggest assets of doing business in Assiniboia, Shirley Karst responds, “Shopping local or doing business locally helps to keep our town going strong and, in many ways, growing. When you shop local, you’re not supporting a big corporation or organization, you’re supporting families. Families of the owners, families of their employees, families of the businesses in town who supply us with parts. You are giving back and enabling local businesses to support events in and around the community. Your money stays in Saskatchewan, in Canada and most importantly in town. As business owners we shop and support local as well. “

With three decades of solid business commitment to Assiniboia, Darrin, Tracy and Dylan are ready to deliver years more of quality products and services to the community they serve.

Forty-two years of business for Dave Mihalicz Excavating Ltd

Sherri Solomko / Freelance Reporter

A lot has changed since 1975, including the current Assiniboia business, Dave Mihalicz Excavating Ltd.

The business’s humble beginnings started when Dave Mihalicz moved to Assiniboia that year to begin work for an excavating company. In 1980, he became partners with Alvin Karst forming a business then known as Karst and Mihalicz Excavating Ltd.

In 1984, Dave bought the company out and established the well-known business, Dave Mihalicz Excavating LTD (DME).

After 32 years at the helm, Dave’s daughter Jolene, along with her husband Trevor purchased the company in 2016, continuing to operate in the well-established name and reputation for more than four decades.

Jolene says her dad continues to mentor along the way in efforts to continue business as usual.

DME has evolved and grown over the years as when it was started, there was one dozer, one truck and one other operator working alongside Dave himself. The company has now expanded to include a fleet of 11 power units and trailers, four excavators, two dozers, one backhoe, two skid steers, two packers and two loaders. During

busy peaks, the company employs 10-12 employees. A complete detailed list of equipment is included on their website.

Jolene says one of their highlights of the past year was completing all the ground work for the “new” Hawks Agro in Belle Plaine, Sask., as well as being part of the ‘new’ business opening soon in Assiniboia.

Excavating is just one part of this business as they offer services in demolition and clean up of any building large or small. DME has had years of experience, demolishing over 1000 grain elevators throughout Saskatchewan and neighbouring provinces. Their experience provides a safe and successful demolition work of any size. They also offer concrete breaking, trenching with ability to cut through asphalt, frozen ground.

Some of the other work they do includes dugouts & lagoons, basements, contaminated soil clean up, bin pads, tree row removal, rockpile removal, supply and install culverts, septic tanks & cisterns, grave digging, train derailment, shoreline erosion prevention, and snow removal.

Additionally, the company is a supplier and hauler of rock, sand, gravel and topsoil. The company website gives a complete detailed list of products that can be purchased, including photos for reference.

We specialize in the following services:

• Concrete breaking

• Demolition

• Excavation

• Sand

• Gravel

• Rock

• Topsoil

• Corral cleaning

• Bobcat work

• Snow removal

• Landscaping

• Free estimates

• Environmental cleanup

• Site preparation

• Dugouts

DME, like other businesses, find it challenging to recruit experienced and qualified employees to join their team. DME is also committed to giving back to the communities they serve. Jolene notes, “We support various organizations in Assiniboia and surrounding area such as Southland Coop Centre, Festival of Trees, Rotary Club, Rebels hockey, Wood Mountain Rodeo, Bengough Gateway Festival, Coronach Pool Fundraiser, ACHS Pink Games, Assiniboia Regional Park and Thomson Lake Regional Park.

The key to their business success story lies in their commitment to prioritizing customer service, affirming, “We do whatever we can to accommodate our customers.”

The business website, www.dmeltd.ca , along with their Facebook page, can help current and future customers know more about their work and the business overall. Jolene said new residents, as well as contactors working in Assiniboia, say their web page have helped find them and provide some details on the products and services this business offers.

Jolene says their business is grateful for community support and surrounding area for their family owned and operated business, which has helped them mark more than four decades as a community business.

cleaning, heavy cleaning, walls, floors, cabinets and appliances. Darren can take care of all types of flooring.

Valet Carpet aims to provide premium carpet and upholstery care for the budget-minded customers. “As an owner-operator, I can take my time. My prices are fixed so there are no hidden costs,” Darren explained. His company is set apart from the rest because he uses a special rotary bonnet shampoo to surface clean carpet fibers followed by a carbonated rinse topped with Scotch Guard.

“I double clean it.” says Darren, “First, I get the surface clean, then I do the carbonated clean.”

Using this system which is like commercial peroxide cleaning, carpets dry quicker and last longer. Valet Carpet does not use boiling water or soaps as some other companies do that can harm carpeting. Valet Carpet is all about gentle carpet care.

Darren has 5 years in the soft wash business, cleaning stucco siding, windows and eavestroughs, leaving your home spotless.

Able II Print in Assiniboia has been operating in the community for 44 years, started in 1981. Jordan Godson is the third-generation owner of this family business, taking over in 2020.

Godson works alongside one other employee. At Able II Print, the business designs and builds custom signage, vehicle wraps, graphics and all kinds of banners, decals and displays. They also offer commercial printing and design for all types of business as well as personal needs such as invoices, envelopes, flyers, cards, tickets and more.

Residents affirm having a business option like this right in their home community is a big asset.

Describing highlights of the past year,

Able II Print tells the Assiniboia Times, “We were asked to design and build a new sign for the Olympia Theatre here in town. We drew up a concept that the board liked and approved and we went to work building the steel frame (all welded in house). Then using our CNC router table we cut acrylic lettering to allow light to shine

through from the LED lighting inside the sign. The rest of the fabrication was to skin the outside with aluminum sheeting and then have the main part of the frame sandblasted and painted. We installed the sign using a crane truck to lift the sign in place and working from a man lift attached it to the building.

The sign was over 10’ tall and weighed roughly 500lbs. It was a challenging build but the result is awesome and will be in place for years to come.”

Able II Print sponsors local fundraising, sports team and events as part of their ongoing community engagement. As well, Jordan is a board member on the local Chamber of Commerce. What is a key on the ongoing business success story, Godson responds, “Staying dedicated to the business and providing quality products.”

The business keeps customers up to date on their Facebook page include highlights of their signage, design and ongoing projects.

“When we do an online push, we typically get some engagement back but over the years in the community and surrounding area word of mouth and being here for over 40 years keeps us busy.”

Godson affirms that one of the biggest assets of doing business in Assiniboia is staying engaged

with the community, local businesses, and people, knowing they prefer to support and shop local as much as possible.

In addition to the Olympia sign mentioned, other notable work by Able II Print has included donor wall and classroom signs at Rockglen Childcare Centre, custom blade sign and bracket at the Sweet Southern Oven Bakery, Mossbank Golf Club as well being lauded for their work at the Southland Co-op Centre that included dimensional signage, new board logos, ice decals and banners. Coming up for this year, look for new signage at the Assiniboia Regional Park Golf Course.

Volunteers remain committed to the original goals of the Assiniboia & District Arts Council (AAC) in providing opportunities for residents to experience arts and culture locally. 2025 marks the 43rd year for this valuable community organization.

Funds raised by AAC help pay for programs such as the Stars for Saskatchewan Concert Series and the Performing Arts School program. Different types of performing arts concerts bring big city entertainment to small town Saskatchewan.

“We are always working to increase our audience to make sure everyone can experience the fantastic artists in our country,” says organization spokesperson Alison Lewis. “We gear entertainment to all ages and interests. For example, our 2025-26 season will include a former Cirque du Soleil performer and a comedian, as well as soul, folk and Celtic singers and bands.”

In quoting a line from the renowned Globe Theatre, Lewis affirms that “Live is better.” “The goal is to get people to enjoy more faceto-face time, as opposed to Facebook time,” she says. “We offer many activities for people to have an opportunity to do just that.”

In addition to performing arts the Arts Council sponsors several visual arts programs.

In partnership with the Assiniboia & District Public Library, throughout the year the AAC “Art’s Up” program presents local youth and adult artists’ work in the Kay Cristo Room at the Prince of Wales Centre. Twice a year the Assiniboia Arts Council brings in Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils juried art for display at Assiniboia’s Shurniak Art Gallery.

A highlight is the annual Mistletoe Art and Craft Sale, showcasing local and regional artists and crafters, who offer unique shopping opportunities for discerning customers.

The Arts Council hosts an annual week-long Art Retreat, in partnership with the Shurniak Art Gallery, which attracts artists from the three prairie provinces and beyond. The retreat is a great opportunity for artists to create and network in a positive and inspiring atmosphere. Lewis says they are excited about recent initiatives.

“In 2024 we offered our first ‘Arts for All’ student summer camp,” she says. “Young people ages 8 – 17 enjoyed a week of drama, music and art. It was so successful we are planning another camp this year.”

The student summer camp was made possible by a Community Initiatives Fund Summer Grant, as well as a generous sponsorship from the Southland Co-op.

A more recent initiative is the formation of a Junior Auxiliary for ages 10 through 18, to engage young people in the arts, fostering creativity, leadership, and community involvement.

“By offering an opportunity for young people to actively contribute to and benefit from the arts, the Junior Auxiliary will grow the arts leaders and audience of the future,” says Lewis.

Community engagement also comes in the form of scholarships for students to be acknowledged for their artistic efforts, as well as financially, to help them attend workshops/camps to further develop their skills.

“As part of our community outreach efforts, we ensure that newcomers and youth can attend our programs through gift certificates and discounts,” says Lewis.

Lewis acknowledges that raising funds through sponsorships and donations to support programming is an ongoing challenge. She adds, “We need support from our community in order to continue to bring in high quality and dynamic entertainment. The money raised brings so much to our community.”

34th Annual

Fortunately, local businesses Southland Co-op, Stark and Marsh, Ross Funeral Service and Mom’s Florist, among others, have led the way in sponsoring shows or partnering in fundraising initiatives.

“We also receive vital funding from Saskatchewan Lotteries administered by SaskCulture, Business/Arts, SK Arts, and the Department of Canadian Heritage,” says Lewis. “These organizations see the benefit and know that we are providing a high level of value for the money they give.”

“With the help of our volunteers, we are aiming to increase our social media presence to attract a wider and diverse audience demographic. When more people see the varied activities we host, hopefully it will spark some new interest and increase our audience base,” says Lewis.

One of the biggest assets of this organization in Assiniboia is the ongoing dedication, all served by volunteers, whose vision and mission is to enrich the community through the arts, promoting and providing accessible and affordable arts-related opportunities for all. They believe in inclusivity and diversity.

In addition to residents having so many opportunities to be part of arts activities in their home community, the town also earns spin-off benefits when visitors come specifically for the shows, artist retreat and showcases, benefitting the hospitality and retail sectors. It is a win-win situation.

You can find out all the latest news and learn more about this community organization from their website, www. assiniboiaartscouncil.ca or follow them on Facebook (Assiniboia & District Arts Council) or Instagram (assiniboiaartscouncil).

Wilcock Mobile Service marks a quarter century in Assiniboia’s business community Sherri Solomko / Freelance Reporter

Les Wilcock actively farmed for 18 years after having been raised on the family farm near Limerick. After working in various machinery dealerships in Assiniboia that included Waiting’s Farm Equipment, Clermont Equipment LTD., Assiniboia Agro, Southern Equipment (1975) and South Country Ag, Wilcock decided to go into business for himself.

Wilcock Mobile Service began in 2000, primarily as a mobile repair service. Their website outlines mobile repairs for agricultural machinery, heavy duty and industrial equipment. Emergency roadside assistance is also available for highway transport equipment.

One of the benefits of this business is that they do not specialize in any single brand of machinery, so are able to service a variety of makes and models of equipment deeming no job too big or too small.

In 2009, Wilcock Mobile purchased the former dealership location of Prairieview Farm Equipment at the junction of Highways 2 and 13, just north of Assiniboia.

The business which is locally owned and operated has 5 employees including the two owners. Les and Melanie Wilcock. Wilcock Mobile staff members have a combined 175 years of experience in the agricultural repair and service industry.

Wilcock Mobile Service Ltd. has access to a wide network of ag and industrial parts suppliers. They are also proud to be an authorized Walker Mower dealer as well as a registered Kohler engine repair centre. WMS is also an authorized dealer for Prairie Battery.

Additionally, to the services listed here, this business also offers small engine repair for most brands. WMS can also offer welding and fabrication services when needed.

Their website affirms, “Wilcock Mobile Service Ltd. now offers a transport service at competitive rates to pick up or deliver your farm equipment. Custom hauling is also available.

Wilcock Mobile

Celebrating 25 Years in Business

Describing a highlight of the past year, Wilcock says, “Our carbon footprint is quite low as we are keeping older tractors in service that would normally be sent to the scrap yard or parked in the back of farm yards to deteriorate.”

One of the challenges the business experiences is availability of some replacement parts for various makes and models of equipment, and it is becoming more of an issue.

WMS continues to engage with their community in a variety of ways, which include: the annual Hayley and Cayden Mother’s Day Run, three staff members are long-standing members of the Assiniboia Community Choir and the business is also involved with Prairie South School Division Career and Work Exploration Program.

Both Les and Melanie have been long time members of the Assiniboia Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs. Les was a member since 1986 and was presented a life membership in the Kinsmen Club of Canada in Oct. of 2004, a big honor which he is grateful for and proud of. The dynamic duo brought up two beautiful Kin Kids in Cara and Hayley, who also became deeply involved with the family of Kin. Community involvement has been very important to the Wilcock family and working with people, having fun with the people they meet is priceless, they affirm. The key to their business success story? Wilcock responds, “We

take pride in the knowledge and the many skills of our staff to help farmers keep their older equipment running, at an affordable cost. The price of new farm equipment sometimes can be out of reach for some producers, and we give them an affordable option to get the job done.”

You learn more about this Assiniboia business at www.wilcockmobile.com., however, Wilcock acknowledges, “Our customers find us mostly by reputation and word-of-mouth.” This reputation is the heart of the “I know a guy” referrals from satisfied customers. As a whole, Wilcock affirms that most of their customers become their friends.

Wilcock says one of the biggest assets of doing business in Assiniboia is the vast variety of agricultural services and supplies. “Assiniboia boasts most brands of agricultural equipment and is a major fuel distribution hub for South Central Saskatchewan.”

Richardson Pioneer Junior B Rebels

Storied 33-year history of Assiniboia Southern Rebels junior team continues to shine

Thirty-three years of Rebel pride in Assiniboia

Sherri Solomko / Freelance Reporter

The year 1992 was the 76th regular season of the NHL, the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup and the year the NHL expanded to include the Ottawa Senators. It was also the year the Assiniboia Southern Rebels Junior B club began.

1992 was also the year that the Assiniboia Southern Rebels won their inaugural season of what was then, the South Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The Southern Rebels claimed seven more titles over a span of a number of years, with the last being won in 2002.

Current President, Curtis Nelson, proudly acknowledges, “The Rebels have won three Western Canadian Championships and are one of the winningest Junior B franchises in Canada.”

Bob Himbeault served as president in the early years of the Rebels while Jerry Volsky and Jim Willis served as bench bosses in the early years.

The Richardson Pioneer Southern Jr. B Rebels now play in the Prairie Junior Hockey League, which was founded in 2007, with the merger of the SSJHL and the NSJHL.

The team’s website provides a great historical list of past presidents, executive members and coaches that have helped build the team into the source of community pride it is today.

Current club President, Curtis Nelson, said this team was built on commitment and dedication by community members and now includes anywhere from 30-40 regular volunteers who help run their season.

Nelson said some of the highlights of their past year include, “The team has been able to attract some great young players and a great coaching staff. The team is becoming a destination that players are being attracted to due to success on the ice, great people involved on and off the ice, and the premier Junior B facility in Canada. We provide an exciting fast paced brand of junior hockey to Assiniboia Area.”

The Richardson Pioneer Southern Jr. B Rebels know that fan and community engagement, as well as strong core, are some of the keys to their success.

“The team has focused its attention this past season on providing a first-rate social media presence for the team as well as having the best people possible in all management positions from coaching, to trainers to equipment managers to team photographers,” adds Nelson.

The Jr. Rebels also aim to involve

themselves in their community, helping out annually at the Catholic Church fowl supper and other community events, as their way to give back to the community who supports them year-round.

As with many small community hockey clubs, the team is not without its challenges.

Nelson affirms that their biggest challenge they face is balancing the books. It is very expensive to run a junior hockey team. Bus travel, hotels, meals officiating and equipment costs continue to increase and revenues at time become difficult to increase. The annual Smiles Per Mile Lotto helps out with some of the team’s revenue.

“The Richardson Pioneer Junior Rebels goal is to become the crown jewel of all Junior B franchises in Canada. They currently provide their players with the best facility in Canada and are continuing to improve their entertainment value to their fan base. The goal of the program is to have players leave the program with the skills to not only succeed in hockey and life, but to excel,” affirms the Rebels’ executive.

Six dedicated staff members help customers and take requests for special parts. Rita Walters, parts specialist comments “It is a very busy place, but it’s a small enough business that it feels like family.”

Great West Auto Electric has been serving Assiniboia for 52 years. In 2018 we chose to become part of the brand name that the Bumper to Bumper group provides, representing quality and dependability.

Our customer base is very loyal and we value each one of them. We’re here to support this region, whether it’s supplying parts they need or being a part of the various community events. Communities in Bloom

A 16-year organization in Assiniboia produces noticeable outcomes, but potentially underrated efforts.

Assiniboia’s Communities in Bloom organization began in 2008 with participation in provincial and national competitions. The industrious group has since blossomed into community

enhancement projects that benefit both residents and visitors alike.

Linda McCrank says their dedicated committee work many hours to create a community full of colour and happiness, because they believe in growing great places together through people, plants and community pride. The committee includes JoAnn Girardin, Debra Hysuik, Susan Robinson, Donna Hoffos, JoAnn Schuweiler, Debbie Payant, Linda McCrank, Sandy Cristo. Other active members are Yvonne Bonnett, Cathy Beauregard, Laurie Connors, and Shelley Bissonnette.

Not only does this group of green thumb enthusiasts work collaboratively to beautify Assiniboia, they inspire the community to enhance their environment to create beautiful surroundings for all to enjoy.

Always sprouting new ideas, the Assiniboia organization built a gazebo

near the pool concession that would provide shade for citizens to enjoy either while enjoying good food and refreshments at the pool, or during the Better Together barbecues, or a simple shaded rest stop.

CIB Assiniboia says they are also supporting the downtown revitalization work by developing the lot south of Shoppers Drug Mart with seating and plantings.

McCrank in a previous Assiniboia Times story added, “We continue to prepare, plant and maintain flower beds throughout Assiniboia. Central Park,

Centennial Park Sign, Kin Hut, Asaskan & planters, Prince of Wales Centre, Southland Centre, Assiniboia Union Hospital Healing Garden, in addition to 100+ planters throughout the town. We also plant the Assiniboia Regional Golf Course flowerbeds and planters, and are involved in Community Garden plots.”

Something new at the Community Garden this year will be six new raised garden boxes, this will give gardeners another option for a smaller and easier to maintain garden plot.

Believing that happiness blooms from within, the group of industrious

volunteers say they are appreciative of the support they continue to receive

with their fundraisers and programs that help beautify the community. They also believe their efforts encourages citizens to take pride in their own properties, contributing the community wide collaborative efforts to grow great places together.

It’s no secret that since the inception of Assiniboia’s CIB program, there has been an increase in civic pride and community involvement. Participation can come from all generations and walks of life from those within the community. Their initiatives and cooperative efforts with community members create positive return values for the community as it becomes more attractive for newcomers or return visitors.

They will welcome any volunteers who would like to join them dig around in the dirt. All ages welcome and for any length of time.

These volunteers keep planting the good vibes, while cultivating joy with their soil mates.

Assiniboia Kinsmen/Kinettes Club

PROGRESS Assiniboia Kinsmen and Kinettes, serving the community’s greatest need Assiniboia’s Kinsmen and Kinettes provide thousands of reasons to appreciate their work Assiniboia Kinsmen turn 80 in 2025, Assiniboia Kinettes 23 years into their recharter as a club

Sherri Solomko / Freelance Reporter

ASSINIBOIA — A remarkable testament to the power of Kinsmen in our communities as Assiniboia Kinsmen will celebrate 80 years in the community, chartering September of 1945.

The Assiniboia Kinsmen has a long legacy of events, places, spaces and traditions all made possible through this service club’s efforts.

Club member, Howard Ellis, affirms that in 2024, their members put in 600 man-hours for the community.

Ellis also acknowledges that the 40-year tradition of the Kinsmen Club selling live Christmas trees had an astounding one-week sell-out in 2024, arriving Nov. 25 and selling out by Dec. 2.

An integral part of the community is the Kin Hut which the Kinsmen Club own and look after upkeep, cleaning, maintenance and rentals keeping it viable for community use year-round. This is another value-added benefit to the community, thanks to this men’s service club. This club retains the revenue from rentals and uses it to help pay the hall’s expenses.

The Kin Hut has been part of the community for more than 50 years. Some renovations were completed in 2020 with more renovations planned within the next two to three years to keep the hall in shape for their club’s and the community’s use for years to come.

“2024 donations were made to various local organizations totalling $12,220.00 Note: the last Chase the Ace raised over $37,500 which was dispersed to local organizations in late 2023. The lottery they are running now we will not be able to donate until the lottery is finished which will be July 2025. The club is hopeful to meet or beat the last fundraising total from this lottery.”

The beauty of Kin membership and its long history is that the next generation of Kin members are born. Two Assiniboia girls are key players in the reinvigorated University of Saskatchewan Kin Cub. Jade Stevenson, who’s grandparents, Walter and Mary Chipak were once part of Assiniboia clubs, is the campus club’s treasurer. Jordan Engstrom serves as TeleMiracle Rep, and was inspired to join the family of Kin as she was a Kin Kid.

Numbers don’t lie, the power of Kin in your community

Kin National convention gave a clear picture of the impact Saskatchewan Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin Clubs have in Saskatchewan. Logging 66,488 hours of community service along with raising and donating a remarkable $2,034,137, which doesn’t include TeleMiracle dollars, there are thousands of reasons to appreciate your local Kin service clubs.

For instance, Assiniboia’s Kinsmen Club has only 11 members but have put in more than 600 volunteer man hours and donated more than $30,000 to the community.

Assiniboia

The Assiniboia Kinette Club is also another strong contributor

In addition to their community efforts, Kinette Raelynn Nicholson served as Kinsman Foundation Chair, volunteering countless hours at monthly meeting approving applications for TeleMiracle funding as well as other tasks their Foundation Chair is tasked with. All the while, continuing to contribute to her home club.

In a year end interview with Assiniboia’s Kinette Club, it was easy to see that there are multiple reasons this club is an asset to their community. Some say there are 58,102 reasons to be thankful for this industrious women’s organization, as that figure represents monies raised or donated to causes or projects to benefit the people of Assiniboia and surrounding area. While others maintain they have been recipient of 2,337 reasons, which represents the number of volunteer hours this club has invested into their community.

The storied history of Assiniboia’s Kinette Club dates back to the 1970’s, and while there was a lapse in club existence for a period of time, the re-start of this community’s service club in 2002 has generated nothing but positives, energy and continued commitment to fulfilling their mandate of ‘serving the community’s greatest needs’.

Assiniboia’s Kinette Club were proud recipients of the Chamber of Commerce Impact Award.

“Membership and retention are likely the biggest challenge for Kin Canada on a National level. People’s lives are so busy that it can be a struggle for some to participate, so it’s easy to give up a service club in favour of other family activities. Being able to give back, even once for a small event, is enough to fill your cup. There are enough of us that we can share the load,” says Kinette Lisa Martin.

This women’s service club in Assiniboia boasts one of the few Kinette clubs in the province with 20 or more members., beating out even some larger centres with their club size. The fact that their membership remains healthy is a testament to the way they function, and how much their member’s contributions are valued and respected in the community.

Kinette Club steps in when and where most needed

The past two decades, and then some, the Kinette Club has shown leadership in the community through their countless volunteer hours and financial contributions to projects, events, both large and small. Without the commitment of this community service club, many of these events and causes would cease to exist,” added Martin.

For instance, once Salvation Army no longer managed the adopt-a-family program, the Kinettes took over without being asked to do so, but simply seeing the need. They have created a project that brings together the community by giving to others in need.

Last year Assiniboia Food bank was on the verge of shutting down, resulting in the Kinette Club ‘adopting’ the food bank for Christmas. The club purchased new shelves, assisted with clean and installation of new shelves, while also helping stock those shelves. They have added signage and man hours to assist this valuable community organization when needed. Without this club’s involvement, the food bank was at real risk of closing.

Both clubs are always looking for new members and interested persons can reach out to corieruzickaolson@sasktel.net for the Kinettes or assiniboiakinsmen@gmail.com for the Kinsmen Club for more information.

Community support of Assiniboia Kinsmen and Kinette Club efforts is one way to say thanks for all the work these men and women do while fulfilling their club’s mandate of ‘Serving the community’s greatest need’. You can follow the Kinsmen and Kinettes on their Facebook page for all the latest news and updates.

50 Years and Thriving

The Assiniboia And District Historical Museum has been in existence since 1974. We celebrated our 50th Anniversary in 2024 and look forward to providing the public with entertainment and an opportunity to research their family roots.

At the museum we plan our season and divide our events into separate themes. In May we have an event we call Museum Day. This event features some type of art form. June hosts school tours as teachers plan their end of year activities. July will feature a travelling exhibit. August offers a story trail, literally. A book from the library will be copied, separated into individual pages and laminated. Visitors choose one of two story trails to follow and read the book as they peruse artifacts in the museum. September offers car shows and an event dedicated to culture. October is a catch up month. We bring things in from outside that need indoor storage. The month is spent making sure everything is in order while slowly winding down. The end of the month is spent closing up for the season. We are available for tours by booking appointments from November until about mid March.

We are a non-profit organization operating on donations and grants. Our board makes the decisions required for operation. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our existence and we simply couldn’t function without them. We’ve been here for 50 years and thriving.

At the museum you will find a host of information about other museums, the town and many other items for visitors that will answer many of their questions about where to go and what to do. There are several items available for sale complete with our museum logo. We have books from authors we have featured. There are several other interesting items for purchase. We invite you to drop by when you’re in town or if you live here, think of us when you’re looking for something interesting to do.

When they say team work makes the dream work, look no further than the volunteer group that makes up the Assiniboia Civic Improvement Association. Their efforts continue to fundraise for capital sport, recreation and cultural projects in Assiniboia.

In 2024, this industrious group were proud recipients of the Top Urban Municipal Initiative

at the SUMA Awards this year. The group believes this was earned as result of their mandate to dream big and work hard.

One of their most notable success stories continues to be the Southland Co-op Centre, that has quickly become known as a world class facility and envy of the province. This charitable organization was proud to

announce recipients of 2024 funding which included: Richardson Pioneer Southern Rebels, Assiniboia Golf Course, Assiniboia Minor Hockey, Assiniboia Volleyball Club, Assiniboia Skating Club, Assiniboia Minor Ball, Assiniboia Minor Football, Prince of Wales Centre and Southland Co-op Centre.

Curtis Nelson has been involved in 14 of the 30 years the spring fever lottery has been running. With 2025 being the 30th anniversary for the annual Spring Fever Lottery, Nelson affirms that they will be committing to a new Zamboni at the rink. The ACIA will be once again looking for other groups to help with a major project, as well as assistance with others. This 30-year milestone is a remarkable achievement.

Five people represent the ACIA and their continued dedication helps out a variety of community groups and organization, all of them are volunteers.

Assiniboia can also applaud themselves for supporting three decades of these community efforts and all the places and spaces it has improved thanks to proceeds from this annual lottery project.

The groups efforts are fuelled by one of their major, annual fundraisers, Spring Fever Lotto. The proceeds from this Lotto have been used for the Southland Co-op Centre. As well, the community support for this annual fundraiser have helping build the Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreation Centre that includes the community’s curling club, library, community college, movie theatre, performing arts centre, as well as a radio station, chiropractor, accounting firm and law firm.

A Look Back Into Our History

Named after the former district of the North-West Territories, the community serves as an agricultural service centre for the surrounding region. On October 12, 1912 the CPR put 980 lots up for sale in the site of Assiniboia. People stood in line to buy their lots and overnight the community rapidly sprang up on the previous barren prairie.

The early years saw a large population of English and French origin, with smaller numbers of Romanian, Scots and Scandinavians. Within the first 12 months Assiniboia had attained town status with W.A. Furlong as mayor.

The town now boasted five brand new elevators and by fall had shipped out a quarter of a million bushels of grain.

For protection from prairie fires, two double chemical engines were stationed in town and two double furrows plowed around the town. It was decided that the first to reach the fire hall and draw the chemical engines to a fire would receive $5 and the first team to reach the fire with a tank of water would receive $10.

By 1913, tenders for sidewalks were solicited. The town constable was instructed to have all parties with hitching posts in front of their buildings on Centre Street to remove them, to see that all ball playing and sports in the village streets be stopped.

A bylaw was passed stating that any horse harnessed to any winter vehicle driving on the streets must have at least two bells of sufficient size and tone to warn foot passengers of their coming.

Street grading and drainage was started in 1913. When the streets were laid out it was expected that Third Avenue would become the main street so it was made wider than the other streets. Businesses were erected on that street and later moved to Centre Street.

Council went on record in 1913 of being in favor of mixed farming providing the parties keeping chickens in town must keep them from disturbing their neighbors gardens.

By January 1914, Assiniboia was made the center for the Royal North West Mounted Police and by February a barracks

was established in town. The Town itself had been policed by a town policeman until the 1940’s when the RCMP were hired to do the job.

August 1914 saw the first four rooms of the Fourth Avenue School opened with 164 students enrolled. By 1914 there were half a dozen gas lights placed on Centre St. Addition of cement sidewalks on Centre street was done in June 1922.

A special bylaw was passed which stated any restaurant and laundry keepers must obtain a special license from the town if they wanted to hire any white girls or women in any capacity.

In August 1925, a committee was appointed to procure a better source of water and in October of that year a tender for the full contract of building a dam, pump house, filtration and chloride plant was accepted.

Centre Street was graveled in 1928. A new covered Grandstand was built in 1926. In May 1933, Wednesday half days holidays started and Assiniboia voted for beer by the glass by June 1935.

The war years hindered growth in the area but town officials looking to the future, employed out of work men to construct the towns sewer system although it could afford to operate it until 1948.

After the war years prosperity returned and the town flourished. May 1953 saw approval for the swimming pool from the Community Pool Committee who had worked to earn money to build the pool. Street lights on Centre Street were replaced with mercury vapor lights in 1955.

In January 1956, the need for a new skating rink as well as an acute shortage of grain storage was prevalent. An organization was formed to build a Quonset type building suitable for storing grain and also when empty suitable for a new skating rink. The loan was backed by signed notes from many people in the area and grain storage money received from the United Grain Growers.

In June 1959 the Mayor and Town Clerk signed a declaration of the closing of the Assiniboia Grain Storage Coop and the building was renovated as a skating rink and the site of the old rink was sold as lots. It was a year or so before the artificial ice was put in.

By June 1957, natural gas came to town. Four blocks of Centre St. were paved from First Avenue to Fifth and gradually extended throughout the town. Storm sewers were put in place in 1965. A new water treatment plant was erected in 1965.

Nelson GM Spotlight

A General Motors dealership has been part of Assiniboia since 1959. Nelson GM began in the community in 2002.

The premier retailer for new and used Buick, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles offers sales, services, parts, detailing and is also an SGI accredited collision centre.

Nelson GM is a large employer in the community as they have 21 staff working at their Assiniboia location.

General Manager, Curtis Nelson, affirms that one of their highlights of the past year was new sales have increased by over 20%, for a third consecutive year, meaning this business must be doing something right.

Although Nelson also acknowledges that lack of moisture in an agricultural community has hurt the cash flow of customer bases.

“Nelson GM believes in supporting the communities that support them. We take pride in the amount of volunteer hours and dollars that we provide to organizations in our market area,” adds the General Manager.

Nelson GM has been involved in countless community events fulfilling their company philosophy to grow through fair prices, excellent

customer service as well as being involved in the community they serve.

“As your community grows so does your business so it is important to be a driver in community growth and development. People want to move to communities that provide a great environment for themselves and their families. It is important for the business community to help foster the spirit and excitement of a thriving community,” states Nelson.

One such example of this was outlined in a previous story in the Assiniboia Times and SASKTODAY.ca noting that Nelson GM partnered with the Masons service club in the creation of a connector service in Assiniboia for the Gravelbourg Shuttle Service. This option allows passengers to travel for no cost to Gravelbourg to connect with the shuttle service. An invaluable service like this for seniors and those who don’t own a vehicle and need to get to city appointments was aided by the partnership of this Assiniboia business.

One thing people may not know about their business is that over the past three years, Nelson GM has been the fastest growing GM dealer in Saskatchewan. This business has received the auto trader award as best priced dealer in the province.
