Humane Society/PetValu team up for awareness event The Weyburn Humane Society and PetValu are teaming up this weekend for the National Pet Adoption Weekend fundraiser and awareness event. Representatives of the Humane Society will be on site at the PetValu store today (February 6), February 7 and February 8 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. "We're so excited. February 6, 7 and 8 is National Pet Adoption Weekend and the Weyburn Humane Society will be at PetValu," said WHS president Pam Arndt-Schick. "So

come on down to PetValu, grab a lunch or some sweets, look at some of our animals up for adoption and let's see if we can get them fur-ever homes." The Humane Society will bring along a few of the animals for residents to interact with, although many will still be left back at the shelter, requiring homes as well. In 2013, The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies collected data nationwide and noted that approximately 46, 578 animals were admitted into their shelters. That did not

include information in regards to other establishments that also shelter homeless animals, such as individual private shelters, rescue and foster groups. Although great strides have been made over the years in regards to homeless animals, it remains apparent that the number of animals without a home is still quite staggering. This National Adoption weekend fundraiser and adoption weekend held in Weyburn will be our local community's chance to help tackle the problem. As part of the weekend awareness event, the Humane Society will also have a chili fundraiser at the PetValu store. All the proceeds raised from the chili luncheon will be put towards the Humane Society. Chili with a bun and a bottle of water are available to purchase for $8. The meal is ready to take with you, so residents can grab a quick lunch to go, in support of the fundraiser. Anyone who is interested in more information about the adoption program is encouraged to stop by the PetValu store over the weekend or contact the Weyburn Humane Society at (306)848-7387. The WHS also encourages you to visit the website at weyburnhumanesociety.ca.

Police remind residents to lock vehicles On Januar y 31, the Weyburn Police Service received a report of a sexual assault against a 24 year-old female. A 46 year-old male is currently under investigation for this offence. The victim and suspect were known to each other. Also on January 31, the Weyburn PS received a report from a local business that two males had left without paying their bill. One of the suspects was later arrested at another establishment for leaving without paying his bill. Both matters are still under investigation. Further on January 31, the Weyburn PS, in a related matter, were called to a local business regarding a person who left without paying his bill. The 34 year-old male male was extremely intoxicated and located a short distance from the business. While dealing with him on the matter, he became extremely agitated and belligerent, even threatening the police officer. He was arrested and lodged in cells. He is facing charges and will be appearing in court in due course. Also on January 31, the Weyburn PS receive a report from a concerned citizen regarding a suspicious male rummaging through parked vehicles. The male is described as wearing a dark coat with a hood, 6 feet tall, 18-23 years-old and was last seen in the area of the spray park. There have been numerous reports this past week of similar incidents of vehicles having been rummaged through. Once again, we urge citizens to lock their vehicles. Rarely do we have an incident where a vehicle has been damaged to gain entry. These are simply crimes of opportunity and if a vehicle is locked, the person usually walks past to the next unlocked vehicle. On January 30, the Weyburn PS received a report that a 27 year-old male, under conditions to not contact the victim, had been

texting her. The suspect has been charged with breaching the no-contact order. On January 29, the Weyburn PS responded to a report of a disturbance at a local pub. Upon arrival the disturbance had diffused. A 22 year-old male and a 27 year-old male were separated and respectively given rides home. No charges were laid. Also on January 29, the Weyburn PS received a report of a domestic assault. During the course of the investigation, it was also learned that the female victim had breached a noncontact order with respect to her boyfriend. A 26 yearold male is facing charges of assault. The 24 year-old female victim, due to breaching her non-contact order, is also facing a charge of breaching that order. On January 28, a local business was the victim of a

break, enter and theft of cash while it was closed. Entry was gained by prying open a delivery door. Once inside, the thief took an amount of cash. The matter is still under investigation. On January 26, the Weyburn PS received a report of domestic assault having occurred at a residence in Weyburn. The accused unlawfully entered the residence where a physical altercation ensued with his 40 year-old girlfriend, where she sustained minor injuries. A 39 year-old male occupant of the house attempted to come to her aid and also sustained minor injuries. A 46 year-old male then fled the scene. With the assistance of the Weyburn RCMP, he was arrested without incident a short time later at his home in North Weyburn. He was remanded in custody and will be making a

Your time will come....

By Helen Waller I was sitting there, minding my own business (actually minding my own feet as I was getting a pedicure), when a conversation with a young Mom of four started as she walked by the salon door. She simply couldn't imagine that any Mom could get a pedicure on a Tuesday afternoon. You see, she was picking up an extra child, while I had none tugging at my leg. (Thank goodness, as that can sure make a pedicure a lot more difficult to execute.) My children are all in school, which has now opened a few more hours in my week. It has been over 18 years since I first became a Mom, and finally the time has come for a mid-week, no real good reason, no I'm not going to Mexico, kind of pedicure. So my response to her was "Don't hate it cuz you ain't it." Not the most eloquent use of the English language but the point was made and we laughed. It made me think about all the young Moms out there with a baby on one hip and a screaming toddler attached to their leg asking for 'just one more candy bag' at the rink canteen. Ladies, I can tell you one thing for sure. Your time will come. I promise. There will be a time when you look around the rink lobby, only to realize your last little one is now on the ice and there is actually enough change in your pocket left for a cup of coffee. There will also be a time when you won't lose an entire collection of mitts and toques over the course of the winter (you will ALWAYS be looking for the lost sock, though). There will be a time when it will be socially unacceptable to wipe your child's nose for them, let alone their derriere. Most importantly, there will also be a time, when you look back at all those crazy, chaotic years and laugh. It took me 16 years for all my children to be in school full-time. Over those 16 years, there is one thing I know for sure. Each child is different. Each child will challenge you in different ways but each child will eventually grow up. They won't need you quite as much as they did when they were little and that is when your time will come. Little by little, you can sneak in a bit more time for yourself. Reading a whole chapter of Fifty Shades of Grey (if you can stop at one), eating dinner without having to cut up anyone's food, and perhaps even getting a pedicure on a Tuesday afternoon. Until then, enjoy them while they are young. They are doing the best they can and so are you. So, next time you walk by and see a veteran Mom spending a little time on herself...remember just because her time has come, does not mean yours won't.

Walk circumspectly By Linda Wegner It was approximately four decades ago that Don Schlitz wrote "The Gambler's Song"; over the next ten years Kenny Rogers, Bobby Bare and Johnny Cash recorded those familiar words (well, familiar to those of us who have been around for a while). The lyrics, couched in a catchy Western melody, also contain some old-fashioned wisdom. "You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,… know when to walk away, know when to run…". Gambler or not, it makes a lot of sense. Walking wisely isn't always as easy, or attractive, as it may appear on the surface: Values clash, priorities get muddled, honesty is too often compromised in favour of politics or popularity and integrity is seduced by promises of material gain. As composer Schlitz wrote, you've got to know when to walk away, know when to run. In this third admonition in his trinity of marching orders, the Apostle Paul admonishes his readers: "See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise…" (Ephesians 5:15). In other words, be careful. The second directive, walk as children of light, invites us to walk in the blessings of His love: Choose right things but always cling to the promise that through Christ God sees us as righteous. That first instructive spoke of walking in love. Where self gratification shouts "opportunity", there's no safer place to run than to the protection and shelter of the love of God. In so doing we are enabled to extend grace to others. Too often religion has approached the matter of "sin" as nothing less that God waiting for us to fail so that He is justified in inflicting punishment. There's nothing farther from the truth. He's love in the midst of conflict, light in place of darkness and a guide through life's deepest valleys.

THIS WEEK’S ONLINE QUESTION

A steady diet of change In 2013, I was uprooted from my work in Red Deer, Alberta, and relocated to Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The transition to a new province, city, church family and church ministry has brought so many changes to my everyday life. In the process, I have learned some important things about how God uses change to transform lives. 1. Change is inevitable. God designed us all to be born, live, age and then die in about the same way. I looked differently at 55 and 25 and 15 and 5 years old and 5 days old. To expect life to be without change is to fight the reality that there will be change as long as you are alive. 2. Change is basically good. We often talk about growth, transformation, development and maturity. These are simply words describing healthy change processes. We were one way and then by some degree of good, we changed. 3. But change can also be bad. Change in any area of life has the potential of going awry and bringing unwanted results. Many have become wary of change and struggle to keep things the way they are no matter what. 4. Change is necessary. Ephesians 4:15-16 "We must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ." I am healthiest, and also the body of believers to which I belong, when we help each other grow and change spiritually. It is a gradual process of positive change. 5. Change is difficult. This brings me back to my moving experience. All the transitions I had to make in so short a period of time have been hard. Leaving a church I served and a city where I lived for over 17 years was tough. Seeing our 3 children become independent adults and leave home gives my wife and me a sense of emptiness. Buying and selling houses, moving all our possessions and setting up in a new community was a lot of hard work! 6. But change is worth it. God has blessed me with a renewed mission in ministry and refreshed me in so many ways by this move. At the end of the day I have to say that I am grateful for all the change. I have learned that to follow God is to be served a steady diet of change. John Smith, Minister, Church of Christ
