SEIU takes strike action in support of members

The Service Employees International Union West officially took strike action on April 22. They have removed services from 27 schools within the Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division. The employee groups that are included in the SEIU-West are custodians, bus drivers, educational assistants, administrative staff and library technicians. The members are striking for a cost of living wage increase of 2.8%.

Accomplished pianist to perform in hometown An accomplished pianist and winner of the first Helen Davidson Music Award, Meagan Milatz, will return home to Weyburn to perform for a special Mother’s Day concert. The Weyburn Concert Series has invited Milatz to perform at a special Volunteer Appreciation Concert to be held at the Cugnet Centre on May 10 at 1:00 p.m. Milatz, a former resident of Weyburn, began her piano studies right here in Weyburn at the tender age of five. Meagan trained under the instruction of local teacher, Cherith Alexander. Her talent was apparent even at a young age and she progressed rather quickly through her studies, completing her Performer's ARCT diploma at the age of 12. Milatz has continued to develop her talent over the years by continuing with performances and pursuing her education. Meagan has performed in several competitions including the Grand Awards Competition, the National Music Festival, the OSM competition and the Canadian Music Competition. Most recently, Milatz has received first ranking in the CFMTA National Piano Competition (2011), the Shean Piano

Competition (2014), and the Classical Concerto Competition (2014). The Classical Concerto Competition, in particular, is held at McGill University where Milatz recently received her Bachelor of Music in piano performance. Milatz studied under the direction of Dr. Llya Poletaev to earn this degree as well as earning a minor in Early Music Performance, having studied with Tom Beghin. Meagan has gained a lot of experience as both a piano soloist and collaborator. This experience and talent is what makes the Mother's Day Concert all the more spectacular. Never before has the City of Weyburn been host to a pianist of this calibre. The Weyburn Concert Series is pleased to have Meagan perform on the magnificent piano which the Butters family donated to the Cugnet Centre. Admission is free for those who have purchased their 2015-2016 Weyburn Concert Series subscriptions. Non-members may purchase a $15 ticket at the door or in advance at Superior Office Products. The afternoon will include a recognition of volunteers and a meet and greet during the intermission. SERV

Response to Arts’ ‘Breathe’ overwhelming

- Photos by Vanessa Lanktree Photography

Weyburn’s Tenille Arts recently released the song Breathe on iTunes as a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. “The response to the song was overwhelming. On the release day, it went all the way up to #6 on the Country iTunes Chart! It has created awareness for Cystic Fibrosis in a unique way and I can't wait to see how far we can take it. I hope people continue to download the

song," said Tenille. Tenille had two TV performances and interviews leading up to the release, and also visited local radio stations in Weyburn and Regina. Arts headed to Montreal, Canada for the Cystic Fibrosis Canada Annual General Meeting on April 23 to perform. From there, she will attend the SCMA's in Yorkton where she is nomi-

nated for the Rising Star Award. The next stop will bring her back to Weyburn on May 1, for the 7th An-

nual Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser that is being held at McKenna Hall. The annual event is organized by Mike and Cara, parents of Teresa Weger, a young girl who has won Tenille’s heart. “I got involved with Cystic Fibrosis fundraising because of Teresa Weger. She's an amazing 10 year old girl who happens to have CF," said Tenille. Tickets for the CF fundraiser are $60 a piece or $520 for a round table of eight. The evening will start with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. and supper at 7:00 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Arts and Codie Provost. Tickets are available at NSWB Law Firm, The Void or by contacting Cara Weger at (306)861-6713 or caraweger@sasktel.net. In addition to the 7th Annual Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser, Arts is scheduled to perform at the Cugnet Centre on May 14 at 7:00 p.m, for a fundraiser for CF titled “So You Think You Can Dance”. Tickets will be available at the door for $10. For any more information on Tenille Arts visit her website at www.tenillearts.com. Please visit www.cysticfibrois.ca for information regarding the disease and their fight for a cure.

Government invests more than $1 million to those in need in the S.E. Individuals in southeast Saskatchewan will continue to have access to free, confidential support services thanks to the Government of Saskatchewan's renewed funding commitment of $1.01 million to Envision Counselling and Support Centre. The renewed funding contract was announced by Estevan MLA Doreen Eagles on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer and Justice Minister Gordon Wyant. "It's organizations like Envision who handle the heavy

lifting for government," Eagles said. "And that's why it's important that we take the time to highlight and celebrate the work of our many community based organizations across Saskatchewan at events like this. Through their dedication to those in need in their communities, they are helping us to keep Saskatchewan strong." "The funding from these ministries is critical in supporting the work we do for our counselling, support and educational services across southeast Saskatchewan," Envision

Counselling and Support Centre Assistant Executive Director Lynda Rideout said. "We want to thank the Government of Saskatchewan for helping us to continue to make a difference in the lives of those in need in the communities we serve." Some of the funding Government provides through the Ministry of Social Services is for Envision to provide a "Diversion" program. The objective of this program is to provide in-home support and education to parents whose children are

at risk of coming into care, an example of government working closely with community partners to keep children safe. Social Services is providing more than $695,000 in annual contract funding to Envision for the Diversion program as well as Family Support and Intensive Direct Services. These include services like the Family Intervention Program which pro-

vides flexible, family-focused supports and programming through individual, couple, family and group counselling. It also provides intervention, supports, and skills to stabilize a family crisis. This agency also receives more than $316,000 annually from the Ministry of Justice for Family Outreach Services and a program to assist children and youth who have witnessed interper-

sonal violence and abuse. Supporting Southern Saskatchewan since 1994, Envision Counselling and Support Centre provides specialized services for victims of abuse and violence. Envision now has more than 30 employees working out of its three offices in Estevan, Weyburn and Carlyle, and serves a population of more than 56,000 people.

If you don’t have anything nice to say... By Helen Waller

I came home the other day to quite the show. Ironically enough, it wasn't on tv... but it was over one. Two teenagers with one tv and I had zero patience left. You do the math. I don't care where you went to school, this wasn't adding up. These two were arguing and simply could not see the other's point of view. The one thing they did have in common though was the name-calling. Don't get me wrong, I have two brothers and two sisters and we had our fair share of name-calling over the years and being that my mother is a teacher, this irritated her more than most. Not only did we get in trouble for calling each other names but apparently our poor use of the English Language was a real insult to her parenting skills. I thought about using my Mom's approach to name-calling but I'm not sure it was really fitting any more. She used to correct the grammar of whoever was doing the name-calling, so much so that it actually got too frustrating to bother with your little sister anymore. Nowadays, teenagers speak in code. They say things like OMG, K, YOLO, TTYL and LOL. The only way to know if your child is calling their sibling a name is by the tone. So, they have gone past the point of no return when it comes to proper use of the English Language. They have created a language all of their own. So, I decided it was time to teach them how to speak mine. I told them, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Well, my house got quiet. Real quiet. I made each of them write a list of nice things about the other. This is a few of the things they came up with. My son said: 1. She's athletic because she does gym, sometimes 2. She's stylish, sometimes 3. She's funny, sometimes (have you seen her golf) He wasn't exactly getting the idea of saying something nice. I know this much about the English language. When you give someone a compliment, you do not usually include "sometimes" after it and don't think that his sister wasn't catching on. So next was her turn and she said: 1. He's nice because he always shares his TV with me. Well played.

Christian unity There is much talk in Christian circles about spiritual unity. Some seem to think that unity is the most important thing for God's people, and some are willing to do whatever it takes to establish it, to the extent of abandoning the very core of Christianity if that's what it takes. As a Christian pastor, I am all for Christian unity, and I think it is incredibly important. Jesus prayed in John 17:20, "I do not ask for these [my disciples] only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one . . ." Clearly, Jesus desired unity, and therefore so should all Christians, and therefore, so do I. The problem is not with unity itself, but with how the word is defined. In the context of John 17, the parameters of Christian unity are clearly established. From the verse cited above, we see that Christian unity is limited to those who believe in Jesus through the word of the apostles. It is a true spiritual unity, received not through formal succession or institutional alliances, but through faith in the specific teachings of the apostle; that is, the gospel. Earlier, Jesus prays regarding his disciples, "I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth" (Jn 17:15-17, ESV). Notice Christ's parameters for unity: First, God's unity is different than the world's unity. The world has its own definition of unity, which requires laying down everything that divides in order to cooperate for the common good. But Jesus says that neither he nor his disciples are of the world. Christians are intrinsically different, and their very purpose for remaining in the world is to introduce a unity based not upon compromise but on truth. Second, we see that the unity Christ desires is God-initiated. Jesus prays in verse 17, "Sanctify them (i.e. set them apart) by in the truth; your word is truth." God intentionally separates His people from the world in order to make them one for His own purpose. Third, we see that it is not an all-inclusive unity but is predicated on separation between those who are in the truth (i.e. who believe the Bible and the words of the apostles) and those who are outside of the truth. I am happy to promote Christian unity, so long as it is rooted firmly in the foundation of Scripture and the truth of the gospel. In these things, all true Christians are one. Pastor Harley Porter, Gospel of Grace Fellowship

about options lately. Choosing what to write about each week is high on my list of importance but over these past several months I've found myself having to make even tougher decisions regarding the way I spend my time and my energy. How long do I want to continue working full time? Given my health related challenges how long am I able to contribute volunteer hours and to which organization(s)? If I could only keep three things in my life, what would those things be and in what order of priority? words I'd like to retract but other words I'm glad I shared with someone who was hurting. There were the several successful work-related outcomes that cheered the heart while the sad news of a sudden and totally unexpected death in the community left many in shock and sadness. Tea with friends plus a Chamber of Commerce luncheon with colleagues each provided pleasant company and encouraging conversations. Winding up the week, I prepared for the next day's trade show with Saturday spent promoting the services and products offered by our home-based businesses. Above all these was a wonderful visit with family. But back to the question: what should I include in this article? From among so much, what's the answer? Simply put, it all boils down to a matter of choice. I've been thinking a lot

Nescafe/ Tassimo disks can now be recycled

15044SDS03

Blue Environmental has added yet another way to help out the environment and keep more garbage out of the landfill. They have signed a deal with a plastics recycling company called Terracyle, which will see Blue Earth Environmental accept particular types of coffee disks for recycling, namely Nescafe and Tassimo. In 2014, 9.8 billion KCups/disks were sold worldwide and if lined up end-toend, those discarded discs would contain enough plastic to circle the globe more than 10 times. Recycling Nescafe and Tassimo coffee disks, which are only two of several brands, will be a step in the right direction. "Whenever they ask us to collect those items, we send them in and then that money can be donated to a nonprofit organization in our community,"said Rose McInnes, who is the owner/ operator of Blue Earth Environmental in Weyburn. The money that is donated comes from credits that Terracycle donates for each coffee disk received. The money in turn is then donated to the chosen organizations which include The Family Place, Weyburn Work-Kin Shop, the Weyburn Humane Society and Weyburn Mental Health. Currently the disks can be recycled by either signing up for the Blue Bin recycling service or by delivering them directly to Blue Earth Environmental. Blue Earth is located at 35 Third Street and is open between 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. To learn more about all the items that Blue Earth Environmental recycles through its partnership with Terracycle, please visit their website at http:// www.blueearthenviro.ca/ or call (306) 891-8370.

Is it time to top up your car's fluids? The mechanical components of your vehicle need fluids and lubricants in order to work well. The rigours of winter driving are hard on these liquids, so replacing them is definitely not a luxury when spring rolls around. The first thing to think about is changing the engine oil. When you had your oil changed last fall, it's possible that your garage mechanic used oil designed for cold temperatures. This type of oil is not suitable for hot weather and should be replaced by a lubricant whose properties protect your engine when temperatures soar to record heights. An oil change is also a good opportunity to check other fluids, such as those in the brake system and transmission. These fluids usually last longer, but you don't want levels to get too low. Checking the coolant is also a good idea, as it prevents your engine from overheating in hot weather; that's something you really don't want to happen. If you're taking your car in to the garage for all these checks, ask your mechanic if your vehicle needs a lube job. The proper functioning of many of your vehicle's parts de-pends on this. Often enough people neglect to check and the consequences can sometimes be dramatic for your wallet as well as for the longevity of your car. Lastly, although not quite so important, don't forget to fill your windshield washer reservoir, which you probably emptied during that last spring storm. By the way, never replace this fluid with water in order to save a few dollars; you could have a real problem if you forget about it when temperatures start dropping again. And plain water just won't be able to deal with all those bugs on your windshield this summer.

Now that summer is on its way, car owners will start hauling out the bucket and sponge and hose for a bit of car washing on a Sunday afternoon. Sweet paradise! How-ever, did you know that the majority of people do more harm than good to their car's paint job simply because they aren't aware of a few basic rules? First of all, never, ever use home cleaning products, such as dish soap or laundry detergent, on your car. These detergents are not de-sig-ned for sheet metal or high gloss paint and should never be used for this purpose. There are loads of soaps on the market speci--fically designed for washing cars. The next thing to remember is to always use a microfiber cloth when washing your car. After all, you don't want to spread the dirt around and rub it into the surface of your paint with a wash mitt or brush, do you? You should also avoid us-

Letter to the Editor

Today I attended a breakfast for cancer survivors and guests at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. The Weyburn Comp students hosted the event and I am thankful that they took the time to honour those of us who have fought and are still fighting the battle and for those who are our friends and relatives. Cancer is the dreaded disease that we all fear and that sends our heart into our throat when we hear the news. For me, cancer came twice - as thyroid cancer and as colorectal cancer. I've had multiple surgeries along with radiation and chemo. What would my life be like without our beloved Health Care system? I would owe hundreds of thousands of dollars and probably never be out of debt. Tommy Douglas had a dream and because of that dream, I've never known life without health care. Neither have my children. The Harper government has failed to renew the Health Accord with the provinces and money in the form of transfer payments from the federal government is decreasing, putting pressure on provincial governments to looks at alternative ways to provide health services. I can't imagine what this will look like and I see that health care for me as I age and for my children and grandchildren will not be funded as it is today if we continue on this path. For the sake of our friends and family, for the sake of those who have suffered from cancer and have been taken from us too soon, think about health care when you vote and what it will look like if we don't stop the downward slide. IT’S NEVER T A CAREER

Members of the Youth group "Youth Rising Up" were at the Spring Trade and Craft fair held at the Knox Presbyterian Church on April 18. The children were selling items to raise money for the child they adopted seven years ago, from the World Vision Organization. The group has adopted a boy by the name of Misseal, who lives in Nicaragua. Members of the youth group will use the money raised to help fund the adoption, send him letters and parcels. EMPL April 28 named National Day of Mourning A recent proclamation was signed by Mayor Debra Button, proclaiming April 28, a Day of Mourning for the City of Weyburn. April 28 was proclaimed "Day of Mourning" by an Act of parliament on February 1, 1991. It is in recognition of the more than 1000 Canadian workers who are killed on the job, thousands more who are permanently disabled and hundreds of thousands who are injured and thousands of others who die from cancer, lung disease, and other ailments caused by exposure to toxic substances at their workplaces. The Canadian Labour Congress chose April 28 as a day of mourning as an opportunity to remember the maximum sacrifice workers have been forced to make in order to make

a living, a day to renew approaches to governments for tougher occupational health and safety standards and more effective compensation and as a day to rededicate ourselves to the goal of making Canada's workplaces safer. The Weyburn Labour District Council will host a Memorial Ceremony at the TC Douglas Calvary Centre on April 28 at 6:30 p.m. "We read the names, we light the candles on their behalf and just generally remember them, remember all workers who were injured on the job and rededicate ourselves to trying to make our workplaces safer" said council president, Wanda Bartlett. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Lohse breaks National records - sets sight on World record

Mikayla Lohse

The man who stops advertising to save money is like the man who stops the clock to save time.

The strongest athletes from across the country were in St. John's, NL from April 7-11 competing at the Canadian Powerlifting Union National Championships. This year's National Championship was the biggest ever, with over 350 of Canada's strongest men and women of all ages competing for the title of National Champion. Weyburn was represented by four athletes. Mikayla Lohse competed in the 52 kg sub-junior category in both the Classic and Equipped competitions. In the Classic competition, Mikayla squatted a new National record of 100.5kg (222 lbs). Mikayla also had a bench press of 50 kg (110 lbs) and a deadlift of 127.5kg (281 lbs). Mikayla totalled 278 kg on her way to a gold medal. In the equipped division, which allows lifters to wear knee wraps and supportive suits, Mikayla once again displayed her dominance, finishing with a 117.5 kg (259 lbs) squat and a new National Record bench press of 58 kg (128lbs). The most impressive result of the week for Mikayla came in the deadlift, where she hit a huge National record of 156 kg (344 lbs), eclipsing not only the sub-junior record but also the Junior (under 23) and the Open (any age) National record at just 17 years of age. Mikayla totalled 331.5kg, coming home with her second gold medal of the week. “Mikayla's deadlift is an extremely impressive feat of strength,” said coach Ryan Fowler. “There are very few 17 year-olds who are deadlifting more than triple their own body weight. Mikayla is now within 4.5 kgs of breaking the World Record deadlift, currently owned by Anna Filimonova of Russia.” Brittinay Rowland also competed in the equipped division in the 84+ kg Junior category. This was Brittinay's first year in the Junior category and she had a very good showing moving up an age category. Brittinay had a 180 kg (397 lbs) squat, a 102.5 kg (226 lbs) bench press and a 180 kg (397 lbs) deadlift. Brittinay finished with a total of 462.5 kg, enough to bring home the Gold medal and the crown of National Champion for the fourth year in a row. “Brittinay once again lifted very well, moving up into the Junior age category has given her some new goals to work towards,” said coach Fowler. “She struggled with her squat at this competition, but everything else was a personal best, and at Nationals after having travelled most of the way across the country to compete, that is extremely impressive.” Brittinay Rowland

Heidi Fowler competed in the classic Bench Press championship where she finished with a 75 kg (165 lbs) bench press. Her bench was enough to win her a silver medal. “This is even more impressive as she hasn't lifted at Nationals since 2012 due to having our two kids,” said coach and husband, Fowler. “I am proud of the work she has put in allowing her to get back to the National stage and compete at the National Championship only seven months following the birth of our second son!” Coach Fowler also competed in his 14th straight National Championship. Fowler finished with a squat of 335 kg (739 lbs), a personal best bench press of 252.5 kg (557 lbs) and a personal best deadlift of 302.5 kg (667 lbs). Fowler finished with a 890 kg total and a silver medal. “Considering I lifted against my brother-in-law, who hit the biggest squat and biggest total in Canadian Powerlifting history and was still able to come home with second place, I am pretty happy with that result.” Fowler's brother-in-law, Ryan Stinn of Moose Jaw squatted a new Canadian record of 390 kg (860 lbs) and became only the second powerlifting in Canada to total over 1000 kg, hitting 1003kg. All four Weyburn athletes will be competing at the 2015 North American Powerlifting Championships, being held July 8-11 in Moose Jaw at the Heritage Inn. Weyburn will also play host to the 2015 Provincial Powerlifting Championship, being held September 12. Ryan Fowler
